DEADLINES

The Central PA Blood Bank’s Community Blood Drive is planned at Fairmount for Thursday, April 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Registration for the blood drive will be held inside the Farm Crest Community Room at 1100 Farm Crest Drive on the east side of the Fairmount campus. You may schedule an appointment by calling 18007710059. Walkins are welcome until 6:00
p.m., but scheduled appointments will be given priority. Please bring a photo ID with you when you come to donate.
All donors will receive a certificate for a free dozen mini donuts from Weaver’s Store, a certificate for BOGO free large pizza from Papa John’s, a certificate for a free appetizer from Texas Roadhouse and one Penn Cinema movie pass.
Donating blood is one of the simplest ways to make a meaningful impact. Be
cause blood cannot be manufactured, local hospitals depend entirely on generous donors to meet daily needs. Every two seconds, someone requires blood, and in Central Pennsylvania, hospitals use 275 to 300 units each day. From cancer patients and accident victims to children with chronic conditions, many lives depend on a reliable blood supply. A single donation can help save up to three lives— proof that a small act of kindness can have an incredible reach.

This ECK is not for the beginners who may be using these columns to improve their mastery of PG (Pennsylvania German). This ECK is for those of our readers who have an intense interest in our PG vocabulary and its roots in the Palatinate (die Pfalz) in southwestern Germany. It is our hope that those of our readers who love to preserve and use the words of their grandparents will find words here with which they are already familiar or words which remind them of other possibly related words. It is also our hope that some of you word detectives will take the time to respond to these words and send us sentences and explanations which come to mind as you carefully examine the words and explanations given above. Please forgive us if we did not translate the High German definitions into English. We thought you just might like to see how some of these words are explained in Standard German by the editors of the Pfaelzisches Woerterbuch, Rudolf Post and Josef Schwing, with whom we visited for several weeks in Kaiserslautern in the Palatinate in the spring of 1984.
You will note that occasionally we gave more than one Palatine form and more than one definition for a given word that was to make matters more interesting for you.

One final observation. If you were in the Palatinate, you would find that the section of the eastern Palatinate (die Vorderpfalz), which lies closest to the Rhine River, is the area where the forms and pronunciations of the dialect words most nearly conform to unser Mudderschprooch. Along the Rhine in the eastern Palatinate they say, for example, “Owwe(r)denn, Offe, uhne, Gewellde (Grumbeere), der Krapp.”

We hope this ECK and the continuation next week will inspire responses from our loyal word detectives. der erscht Daag im Matz 1989 Yuscht en BischliGnippli as die deitschi Wadde iwweraus gleicht

Author: Wenger
Scripture: John 4:39
“Now from that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, ‘He told me all the things I have ever done.’”
Last week we closed with the importance of asking questions to help the person discover what they really believe, to open conversation, relationship and awareness We also looked at the testimony of the maniac of Gadara to all the people of Decapolis, David to Saul and the troops of Israel and Philip with the
Ethiopian Eunuch. Andrew’s testimony brought Simon Peter and Phillip’s testimony brought Nathanael to the Lord. Speaking of Andrew, the Bible says; “He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah,’ and he brought him to Jesus. Looking at Phillip, Phillip found Nathanael and said to him, ‘We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.’”
The great commission is not a suggestion, it is a command. If we neglect this all important ministry (given to all of the children of God, not to Pastors alone), God may send some motivation in the form of persecution to fan our flame. This happened in the Church at Jerusalem. After Stephen was martyred, a wave of persecution broke out scattering the disciples throughout Judea and

Samaria. We see this in Acts 8:1, 4 “Now Saul was consenting to his death. At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word.” Many people will never attend a church or read the Bible. You may be the only contact some people will ever have to
the gospel. Don’t worry about what to say, but step out in faith as the priests did when they stepped into the waters of the Jordan River. The waters did not separate until their feet touched the water.
Do we care? Do we have a love for others that motivates us? Be bold, it’s the Lord God whom we serve. Is it that we are more concerned about what people will think of us? Do we value the opinion of others over God’s? Our

attitude should be like those early believers in Acts 4:20. “For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”
Remember Christ’s words, “if you are ashamed of Me, I will be ashamed of you before my Father.” Paul declared, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation.” You have the power…Acts 1:8 “You shall receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and as far as the remotest parts of the earth.” Be a Jeremiah, he had our same struggles.
Jeremiah 20:9, “Then I said, ‘I will not make mention of Him, nor speak anymore of His name. But His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back and I could not.’”
What does it mean to be
a witness in legal terms? A lay witness is an individual who has firsthand knowledge of the events through their own senses (hearing, seeing, what they experienced). If you know Christ as Savior, you can tell others of the difference He has made in your life. You know you will go to heaven when you die. He, by the Holy Spirit, giving you a new power to live a life directed by the word of God. You are simply sharing the message of the Bible truth and its impact of it on your life.
We are under obligation to others to deliver the message of God’s love. “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? (Romans 10:1417). If you don’t, who will? If not now, when?
We will pick up next week.

Adriana Rasmussen 7th Grade
Adriana Rasmussen is in seventh grade at Hinkletown Mennonite School and she goes to Hinkletown Mennonite Church. Her mom’s name is Jinepher Rasmussen, her favorite color is almost any shade of blue, and her favorite shape is a star. At 12 years of age, she enjoys horse riding and playing with her pets.

Written by: Ana Swartz

Her love for animals has made her own roughly 38 pets in her whole life. On December 30, 2024, her pet hamster, Hammy, came to live with Adriana. One thing she likes to do with Hammy is take him outside. “He’s a soft, warm-blooded creature with long fluffy hair and big, bold eyes,” she explains. Around half a year later, on May 1, Adriana got Kimmy her kitten. “She’s a funny cat with a silly personality and big moon-shaped eyes,” she continues. “My cat sees my hamster yet chooses not to kill it.” She has had a lot of other pets before, which include birds, bunnies, turtles, and a lot more cats and hamsters. She also takes horse riding lessons. She says that horse riding is “therapeutic” and “helps calm the mind.”
Overall, it’s clear Adriana loves animals! She has had a lot of pets over the years, and she enjoys horse riding lessons, using it as a calm retreat.

Lia Muñoz Sophomore
Lia Muñoz is the daughter of Ashley Muñoz. She is the second oldest of four siblings. She is a sophomore at Ephrata Mennonite School and attends Cornerstone Mennonite Fellowship with her family.

She is looking forward to visiting Germany as an exchange student at the end of the school year, experiencing a new culture and seeing where the experience takes her.
Her favorite class is biology because you get to study so many fascinating things. A highlight of her school year so far has been her class field trip to Boston. Getting to know her classmates better and playing games on the van rides.
Outside of school she enjoys reading, photography, dog grooming and baking. Her dream would be to attend college and get a job in the medical field.
Some cool facts about Lia is that she skipped 9th grade and she won second place in a CyberPatriot competition. A CyberPatriot competition is a series of online rounds of teams who are given a set of virtual systems and are trying to find and fix the cybersecurity problems.

Written by: Katelyn Nolt

Someone that she looks up to is her mom, because she always supports her and encourages her.
If she could change something about the world she would create world peace, so that people could live without fear and conflict.
Overall Lia is a great person who loves new experiences and making great memories.

He furthered his education at Stevens Trade School, where he studied architectural drafting and graduated in 1955. In his early career, George worked as a carpenter. He quickly moved on to managing a construction company, which turned into a career in real estate and property management.
