Stein in der Pfalz Deitschland

Last week, we printed SO WAR’S FRIEHER, a Palatine dialect poem by our poet-friend, Hans Ehrhardt from the Village of Stein. This week, we want to share some of the dialect words Hans Ehrhardt has been collecting these past ten years. These are dialect terms which Hans hears less and less in his native dialect, some of them are no longer used, for they have passed on with their users, just as so many of the words from our Mudderschprooch have. Hans points out that some of these words are or were not in use in other German dialects, hence are not to be found elsewhere in Germany. Is it possible that we have preserved some of these old words here in our own beloved Mudderschprooch?

We are not printing all of Hans Ehrhardt’s words, which he lists alphabetically in verses. We will pick out those which may sound familiar to you on the basis of your knowledge of Pennsylvania German. We have included some terms from Hans’ list which may be of delight to you. ***

The local chapter of the Loyal Christian Benefit Association (LCBA) (Chapter 1557) held their monthly meeting, Tuesday, February 17, at The Udder Choice. Election of officers was held with the following results: President Barbara Lilley; Vice President Suzanne

Ratcliffe; Co-Secretaries, Diana Christ and Nadine Fisher; Co-Treasurers Connie Firestone and Terry Marxen. Preliminary plans for spring Haus and Pinnocle parties, and a fall Bingo were discussed.

are made possible with proceeds from card parties, Redner’s grocery receipt rewards, a quilt raffle and matching funds awarded by LCBA’s home office. In the past eighteen years, the Ephrata branch has been able to disburse over $100,000 to positively impact local communities. In addition to their fundraising efforts, members also volunteer numerous hours to a variety of projects that enhance the lives of others. The local Branch’s motto is “Love God. Embrace Others.

How To Get The Best Clothing Deals At Secondhand Shops

Secondhand stores are generally the best place to start when looking to add to your wardrobe or find affordable pieces that match your style, but how can you tell if a clothing item is worth purchasing? Here are some points to consider when shopping for secondhand clothing:

1. If possible, try on everything: Some thrift stores provide changing rooms for customers to try on clothing items before taking them home. It is a good idea to make sure clothing fits before purchasing, especially if the store does not take returns.

2. Pay attention to care instructions: Generally, thrift stores do not wash the clothing that is donated before placing it on the rack for sale. When you bring your haul home, you will want to wash the items before wearing them. Take a look at an items washing and drying instructions before

buying it. Will you have the time to probably wash and dry the item after purchasing? If not, it might be worth passing on.

3. Check the condition of your items: An important factor of secondhand clothing shopping is the quality of the clothes you are looking at. Since items are secondhand and often at least somewhat worn, it is good to examine the flaws in your items. If any flaws do exist, make sure you’re oaky with them or that you’re prepared to fix them up.

4. Stick to quality fabrics and materials: When it comes to clothing, try to find pieces that are made of cotton, linen and wool to get the best bang for your buck. It may be beneficial to learn how good quality material, such as silk and cashmere, feels to the touch. This would make singling out the good stuff while sifting through racks a breeze.

What Do Charities Do With Donations?

People donate to charity with the expectation that their donations will be used to provide support to those in need or inspire social change. Donations can make a big impact, but many people question exactly what happens to those funds once they reach a nonprofit group. It makes sense to want to know how charities spend money, and the following are some ways that charities put donations to good use.

Fund Programs

Charities, first and foremost, use donations as a way to spearhead specific programs and initiatives. These programs can involve funding health services, such as researching medical conditions and trying to find cures. Education-based charities may use funds to provide scholarships or purchase books and other educational materials for students. Charities addressing poverty may use funds to provide food, shelter and job training.

Operate the Nonprofit Organization

Although it would be preferential if all charitable donations went toward helping the people who need assistance, operating a

Resale Resource

nonprofit incurs many of the same costs as for-profit entities. Therefore, a portion of donations is often earmarked for the operational costs of running the charity.

According to Benevity, a resource for running and funding nonprofits, charitable groups that say 100 percent of donations go to the charity are perpetuating a myth.

Operational expenses can include staff salaries; office expenses like rent, utilities and supplies; continuing education and training for volunteers; and also community outreach programs.

Marketing and Advocacy

In order to do the greatest good, organizations have to raise awareness about their missions and programs. This can include investing time and money into campaigns

to educate the public, attract new donors and mobilize volunteers. In addition, donations help support lobbying efforts to promote governmental policy changes.

Provide Emergency Relief

Charitable groups that step in when natural disasters, humanitarian crises or health emergencies arise will need to mobilize quickly to provide relief services. Donations to these groups often are directed to these efforts.

Immediate help may come from food and medical supplies, while long-term intervention can include funding the efforts of rebuilding teams.

Charitable groups spend donations in many different ways with the goal of ensuring such contributions make a notable impact.

Tips To Live Comfortably On A Budget

Whether you are retired and on a fixed income, or just trying to save money, here are some budgetfriendly ideas to try.

• Set priorities. What are the necessities that you absolutely cannot skimp on?

These may include a mortgage or rent, utility bills and any other loan payments that have already been established. These amounts will have to be deducted from monthly income before you will discover just how much money will be leftover for other things.

• Downsize. There is the option to cut back on certain things to free up more money. Many people find it is wise to sell their home and

move into a smaller condo or apartment. Consider downsizing your car as well. Get a pre-owned vehicle for a lower payment schedule.

• Consider shopping at consignment stores. Consignment stores are popping up in all different areas, including exclusive cities and towns. Many times the merchandise in consignment stores is brand new or has only been used once. This

could be the ideal place to turn for housewares, clothing, accessories, and even gifts for others. The prices are typically marked well below retail value, and you may find some well-known brands.

• Get crafty. Sometimes things that are sold at stores for a high price can be replicated at home easily with just a few materials. From tufted headboards to

curtains to decorative pillows, chances are with a little ingenuity you can make these items yourself. Or, enlist the help of a friend or family member to assist you in a project that is slightly beyond your level of expertise.

Living on a fixed income can require reassessing priorities and making a few changes to the household budget.

Dining with the King by Pastor Ricky Kurth

“… I appoint unto you a kingdom… that ye may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel” (Luke 22:29,30).

As you can see from these words that the Lord spoke to the twelve apostles, dining with the King is associated with reigning with Him. We see this same thought in the Lord’s words to Tribulation Jews who will need to overcome the temptation to take the mark of the beast if they want to reign with Christ in the kingdom of heaven on earth:

“… if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with

me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne ” (Rev. 3:20,21).

If you are wondering what connection dining with the king could have to reigning with him, the king’s table was probably a place where the king’s business was discussed. This writer is not a member of the Berean Bible Society Board of Directors, but I have dinner with them when they are in town for a meeting. At these dinners, I’ve noticed that board business is always discussed at the table and, based on these discussions, decisions are made later at the official meeting.

We see this connection between dining and reigning typified in the story of Mephibosheth. If you’ll remember, after David became the king of Israel, he wanted to show kindness to any members of the house of Saul that he could find (II Sam. 9:1). When Mephibosheth was brought to his attention (vv. 2-6), David said to him, “… I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy

father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually” (II Sam. 9:7).

David went on to give Mephibosheth “all that pertained to Saul and to all his house” (v. 9), and remember, Saul had been king of Israel. In other words, Mephibosheth was given a king’s inheritance, and invited to sit at the king’s table and reign with him “as one of the king’s sons” (v. 11). Quite an honor for the grandson of a man who had

once been the present king’s enemy.

Some men might take such a tremendous honor for granted, but not Mephibosheth! He later told David: “… all of my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more unto the king?” (II Sam. 19:28).

Mephibosheth knew that he had been given such an unbelievably high honor;

Sundays 9AM & 10:35AM Nursery-grade 4 options during both services Join us for Worship:

that he felt he had no right ever to ask the king for anything ever again. Now, how about you? May I remind you, that what the king did for Mephibosheth, is exactly what your King has done for you? God “hath raised us up together” with Christ (Eph. 2:5,6), “and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” We who were once members of the family of God’s “enemies” (Rom. 5:10). Just as the Lord invited kingdom saints to sit and reign with Him in the kingdom of His Father, Paul says that we have been invited to sit and reign with Christ in the kingdom of His Father in the heavenlies—to sit with Him in His throne!

Speaking of Christ, Paul says that God “hath put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be the head over all things to the church” (Eph. 1:22). Since God “calleth those things which be not as though they were” (Rom. 4:17), you are already seated with Christ at the Father’s right hand, and someday you will reign with

Him over the angels (I Cor. 6:3).

In response, you can grumble and complain about your position in life, or you can rejoice in your position in heaven, and join Mephibosheth in wondering about your right ever to ask anything more of God beyond what He has already done in giving you a King’s inheritance (Eph. 1:11) and seating you at the King’s table “as one of the King’s sons” (cf. Gal. 4:4-7). I’m sure David would have given Mephibosheth anything he asked for, but his heart was so filled with thanksgiving that he felt he didn’t dare ask for more. While we have a clear command from God through Paul, to “let your requests be made known unto God” (Phil. 4:6). Before asking God for anything, it might be good to run a “Mephibosheth check” on the level of your gratitude. After all, if God never did anything else for you other than what He has already done for you in Christ, He’s done enough.

Ephrata Eats Supports

Good Samaritan

Ephrata Eats will return on Tuesday, March 10 for its third year, bringing the community together for an evening of food and fellowship to benefit Good Samaritan Services. The event will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Pour Man’s Brewing Company, 24 East Main Street, Ephrata.

After two consecutive soldout years, this annual event aims to raise $75,000 to support Good Samaritan Services and its work with individuals and families facing homelessness and housing insecurity in Lancaster and Chester counties.

Guests will enjoy samples from several popular local restaurants, along with beverages, raffles, and interactive activities throughout the evening. The event is made possible not only by participating eateries, but also by the generosity of other local businesses that donate their time, resources, and sponsorship support to help make the evening a success.

Since 2001, Good Samaritan Services has grown from a single shelter into an organization serving approximately 300 men, women and children each day who are experiencing a housing crisis. Funds raised through Ephrata Eats directly support housing programs, compassionate case management, financial empowerment, rental assistance, and counseling services that help neighbors move toward stability and independence.

Tickets are limited and expected to sell out. For more information, visit GoodSamServices.org/ ephrataeats.

Akron Lions Club Supports 18 Organizations On Donation Night

Back in September during Ephrata Fair week, the Akron Lions were busy flipping and toasting toasted cheeseburgers. At its meeting in late February the club celebrated its profits from making all those sandwiches and French fries by donation to 18 local organizations which the club supports so

they also can serve the community. It is a lot of hard work during Ephrata Fair week, but so rewarding to be able to help so many through the club’s efforts. It is a great meeting night when representatives from the donor organizations can receive a check from the Akron Lions as well as sharing what their

group does for the community. The Akron Lions also receive help from these organizations to help them serve at their stand during the Ephrata Fair. The Akron Lions were able to give a total of $38,000 to these organizations, along with funds to its International Lions who serve the world.

Saenz

For most people, being a student athlete is a heavy load, but for Abby Saenz it’s special. Saenz is compassionate and has been a part of sports since she was young. The EHS junior participates in soccer and many other extracurricular activities including orchestra and playing the cello. She is a varsity starter for the soccer team and a skilled academic student. As well as the participation aspect, the genuine junior also enjoys the heart kindling friendships she has made along the way.

Her parents, Chastity and Victor Saenz, are who she looks up to the most because of their hard work and dedication. “I really admire my parents’ compassion and patience, and I hope I can be like them one day,” said Saenz. This mindset has followed Abby Saenz throughout her high school career.

In school, the junior enjoys being able to be with her friends and playing soccer. Her favorite class in school was Honors Composition specifically because she wrote her college essay. Her determination in these classes helped her become a member of the National Honors Society. Outside of school, you can find her attending Middle Creek Church, reffing soccer games, and working in the snack bar at the Ephrata Community Pool over the summer. In her free time she loves going outside of her comfort zone by trying line-dancing. After high school, Saenz plans on going to college for something in the medical field as well as continuing her soccer career.

Brennan Hoover 6th Grade

Brennan is in 6th grade at Catalyst Christian School. He sparks positivity and kindness everywhere he goes. He enjoys going to classes and spending time with his friends at Catalyst Christian School. He also enjoys talking to the teachers and going to chapel. His favorite classes are language arts and world geography because he likes to learn more about the world’s history and how to use grammar properly.

He participates in basketball and archery at Catalyst Christian School. During his spare time he enjoys hunting, fishing, playing with cousins, and being outdoors. He also sometimes goes to the Farm Show or the Great American Outdoor Show.

Brennan’s greatest accomplishment so far is shooting his first deer in the fall and getting a double in baseball with the bases loaded. He also feels good about making the little league all-star team.

Brennan and his family attend Hammer Creek Mennonite Church in Lititz, PA.

He admires his grandpa and his dad because they teach him things about hunting and life. In the future,

Brennan plans to either become an electrician or be a guide in Montana with his grandpa.

The ECA supports the Cloister Chorus, founded in 1959, which offers historically informed performances of some of the 1,000 hymns composed by the Brothers and Sisters of early Ephrata. The organization maintains a Back to the Cloister account, funded through donations and proceeds from the sale of apple dumplings in October, to purchase artifacts of Cloister provenance and bring them back home.

The ECA is launching into the new year with a focus on community engagement, partly centered around the new amphitheater, a unique venue for theater, music, weddings, and celebrations on the Cloister property. Lions Club Student Of The Month

It’s time again for another Student of the Month from the Brownstown Elementary School. Under the sponsorship of the West Earl Lions Club, the school has chosen first grader Nora Murphy, daughter of Jay and Jillian Murphy, and student of Mrs. Childs.

Mrs. Childs speaks of Nora, who has faced many challenges, such as walking, eating and learning. Despite these setbacks, Nora comes to school with a smile on her face. She tries new and hard things with a huge heart bursting with pride and confidence, which makes her tough and smart as she tackles huge mountains of difficulties.

The West Earl Lions are so proud of Nora and wish her the best for her future years in school. Everyone faces difficulties in life. Take a tip from Nora and knock those difficult mountains down and come out stronger for it! Look for some great events coming up in the spring from the West Earl Lions and may this brutal winter be just a fading memory as spring enters! 9 9 9
