The New Holland Area Historical Society is hosting a presentation on the history of local banking Thursdays, January 22 and 29, from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 South Kinzer Avenue, New Holland. The banks that will be part
of this presentation, from the past to the present, will be New Holland National Bank, Blue Ball National Bank, New Holland Farmers National Bank and Ephrata National Bank. The focus of the Thursday, January 22 presentation will be the New Holland

A community gathering was held last week to talk about the upcoming new Reamstown Park playground build. Families came with their excited children who were asked to offer their suggestions on what features would most interest them.
Children’s drawings were displayed, ideas were ex changed, proposed prelim inary renderings were shared and excitement filled the room. The build is slated for June, and it will be completed in one week with the help of the community. Anyone may
be involved from skilled laborers to unskilled, as opportunities to be a part of this momentous project are countless, down to helping serve meals to those that are building. The Reamstown community is encouraged to be part of something bigger

Peter C. Rathman Peter C. Rathman, age 55, of Reamstown, passed away on January 4, 2026, at WellSpan York Hospital surrounded by family. Born on September 7, 1970, in Lancaster, he was a son of Donald & Mae (Nolt) Rathman, and the loving husband of Shannon (Haldeman) Rathman. Peter graduated from Cocalico High School in 1990. He worked as a Meat Cutter for Shady Maple Farm Market and previously Martin’s Country Market where he was known for his commitment to quality and service. His work ethic was matched by his passion for life outside of work. An avid outdoorsman, Peter was a member of the Cocalico Sportsman’s Club. He found joy in hunting and fishing, often making the most of these activities wherever possible. His love for nature extended into his gardening pursuits, where he cultivated

Herwig Georg Schutzler, 89, Lititz, passed away on Sunday, November 2. He was the husband of the late Adelheide (Heidi) Schutzler. He is survived by two sons: Michael, husband of Cari Schutzler, and Peter, husband of Kate Schutzler; four grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren. Phyllis V. Ross, 85, Eph rata, passed away on Saturday, December 20. She was the wife of the late Bob Ross. She is survived by three
beauty in his surroundings. The mountains held a special place in his heart, and he created many cherished memories spent at the family cabin in Jameson City. Peter was a member of Mohler Church of the Brethren. His love for animals and the natural world reflected his kind and nurturing spirit, traits that endeared him to all who knew him. Peter touched many lives with his warmth, enthusiasm for
nature, and dedication to his family. He will be remembered for his generous spirit and the love he shared with those around him. Along with his wife and parents, Peter is survived by his daughter, Ashton Rathman; his brother, Daniel (Cherie) Rathman; and extended family members. A viewing will be held on Monday, January 12th, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Good Sipler Funeral & Cremation Centre, Inc. and a funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 13th, beginning at 10:00 AM at Good Sipler Funeral & Cremation Centre; 34 N. Reamstown Road, Reamstown (Stevens), PA 17567. His final resting place will be at Middle Creek Cemetery in Lititz. Arlene M. (Bomberger) Ditzler Arlene M. Ditzler (Bomberger) 85, formerly of Ephrata, passed away on January 5th, 2026, at Masonic Village, Elizabethtown. Born January 23rd, 1940, in Lebanon, PA, she grew up on her parent’s farm near Fredericksburg with her brothers, Mark, Ray and Glenn. Arlene graduated from Northern Lebanon High School and Elizabethtown College. While she was in college she visited the Ephrata Fair, where she met her future husband, Jack Ditzler. Jack and Arlene were married on November 25th, 1961. Arlene was a schoolteacher at Lincoln Elementary School in Ephrata, where she taught
fifth grade for ten years. Arlene always enjoyed flower gardening and became very good at it, earning the title of Master Gardener. She also worked as a Landscape Designer for several years. Around 1980 Arlene dis-

“Yes, my hat is rather dirty, It was really stupid of me. I never thought about the food. Do not blame your son, John.”
But look! What does she see now? Right above the stove, yes, It’s an old torn hat, Almost as dirty as a pig.

Budding junior Karli Walters, daughter of Karen and Corey Walters, is being honored with her hard work and extracurriculars. This year, Karli is taking Wind Ensemble, Financial Literacy, Lifelong Personal Communication, Pre-calculus, AP Literature, Psychology, AP Statistics, Civics and Government, and Physics. She is heavily musically involved, partaking in marching band as part of the snare, Symphonic Band, and Music Practice Club. Walters loves being in marching band and has made many memories not only with Cocalico’s marching band, but the college bands of Millersville, Kutztown, and West Chester. She is additionally involved in Bible study. Walters knows what she wants to do with her future, planning to apply at either West Chester or Kutztown to major in psychology along with playing in the marching band. She hopes to one day work in a psych unit. She yearns to travel to her cabin, which she considers to be her favorite and most beautiful place on Earth. In her free time, Walters enjoys baking sweet treats– specifically cookies–drawing, making crafts, reading, and spending time with her friends. She also has a cat that goes by Daisy. Her favorite quote is, “Everything happens for a reason.” She claims that while it is cliche, she stands by it with her whole heart. It helps her to understand why bad things happen and how they have led her to beautiful results, even if the moment itself is not beautiful. Olivia Hurst, the firstborn daughter of Phil and Amy Hurst, is a senior at Lititz Christian School. She participates in several extracurricular activities, which include being a captain on the volleyball team and being on the stage crew for the spring musical. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, drawing, taking walks, playing volleyball, and working at New Holland Coffee Co. She is a dedicated student and is a member of the National Honor Society. She also attends both Victory Church and 717 Church. When asked what her favorite thing about Lititz Christian is, she replied that her favorite things are “the teachers and that it’s so easy to connect with people.” She has participated in many school-sponsored activities and trips, one of which was the 2024 Foreign Language trip to Spain. Her favorite class at LCS is Psychology, because “the content is interesting and thought-provoking.” After high school, Olivia plans on taking a gap year and working. Civil Air Patrol Cadets Honor Veterans At Wreaths Across America Ephrata
Civil Air Patrol cadets and senior members from the Pennsylvania Wing, including members of the Jesse Jones Squadron 304, Lititz, participated in Wreaths Across America at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery on Saturday, December 13. The Jesse Jones Squadron 304 Civil Air Patrol Cadets took part in the Line of Patriots during the hourlong ceremony honoring veterans from each branch of service. Joining Squadron 304 cadets in the Line of Patriots were Civil Air Patrol cadets from Dauphin, and Chester County squadrons. United States Navy Sea Cadets from the Robert I Rudy Division located in Lebanon and the Young Marines from Lancaster were also present on the Line of Patriots. We remember the fallen, honor those who serve and their families, and teach our future generations about the price of freedom. This mission is continued year round. When volunteers lay the wreaths, they are encouraged to say the veteran’s name aloud, thank them for their service and sacrifice, and take a moment to reflect on that person and their life. Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets each Monday (except holidays) at 7:00 p.m. in the Venture Jets hangar, which is located, on the airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. “Don’t Look Back” Author: Wenger Scripture: Luke 9:62 “But Jesus said to him, ‘No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God.’” Make sure your seatbelt is securely fastened, because this one is going to create turbulence. This flight will be rather bumpy. Our study verse is not a hyperbole (statements or claims not meant to be taken literally). When we consider the context of our study verse, we see three people who all offer excuses as to why they can’t follow Christ, immediately revealing a divided loyalty. In the first encounter, someone said to
him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” To him the Lord said, “foxes have holes, birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head,” thus warning him of the hardship that discipleship requires. To another Christ said, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.”; “Christ responded, ‘let the dead bury the dead, but you go and proclaim everywhere the Kingdom of God.’” This emphasizes that no earthly relationships are to take priority over the call and command of God on your life. Finally, the last con testant says, “I will follow you, but first permit me to say goodbye to those at my home.” Christ responds to the last inquirer with our study verse “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God.” Looking back is indicative of a person who says, having started, I am not sure I want to continue. We are not talking about some honest doubts here. Thomas doubted, but that certainly
isn’t the standard. Disciple ship demands total commit ment, prioritizing God’s Kingdom over earthly ties, comforts, and/or future prospects. Albert Barns addresses our study verse this way: No man, having put his hand to the plow... – “To put one’s hand to a plow is a proverbial expression to signify under taking any business. In order that a plowman may accomplish his work, it is necessary to look onward to be intent on his employ ment not to be looking
back with regret that he undertook it. So, in religion, he that enters on it must do it with his whole heart. He that comes still loving the world still looking with regret on its pleasures, its wealth, and its honors that has not “wholly” forsaken them as his portion, cannot be a Christian, and is not fit for the kingdom of God. How searching is this test to those who profess to be Christians! And how solemn the duty of all people to renounce all earthly objects, and to be not only “almost,” but “al-

If we were to teach true disciple ship in churches today, 75% of congregates wouldn’t be able to get out of the doors fast enough. Ephrata Community Meals Program Welcomes You For Dinner
The Ephrata Community Meals are held Thursday evenings at three host churches, Bethany UCC, Trinity Lutheran and First Church, with other churches preparing the meal. The
doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the meal is served at 6:00 p.m. During the month of January, the meals are held at Bethany UCC, during February they are at First Church, and in March, they
are at Trinity Lutheran. Then, the cycle starts again. There are a few Thursdays throughout the year the meal is not being held. You can reference the Bulletin Board in The Shopping News to
