FASD Awareness Day - September 9th Over the past few years, you may have noticed more information and stories in the news about women drinking alcohol during pregnancy. It seems that people are becoming more aware of the dangers of drinking during pregnancy, although pregnant women are still given conflicting information from medical professionals about this. The truth is that damage can occur if a woman drinks any amount of alcohol while pregnant.

September 9th is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day, a day to raise awareness about struggles that individuals and families can face because of pre-natal alcohol exposure. FASD is a term that

encompasses the range of effects, including Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), that can occur when a woman chooses to drink while pregnant. September 9th was chosen because it’s the ninth day of the ninth month, reminding women to abstain from alcohol during the nine months of pregnancy. Often women who drink during pregnancy do so before realizing that they’re pregnant. When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, it can get into the fetal bloodstream and affect development. An embryo cannot process alcohol like an adult would, so it focuses on just surviving rather than growing. At the beginning of pregnancy, many parts of the embryo are beginning to

form, parts like the central nervous system, the brain, heart, arms, legs, eyes, ears and teeth. If a child is affected because of pre-natal alcohol exposure, there can be damage that the child won’t ever just outgrow. It will be a lifelong struggle of learning to live with a permanent disability.

Children with FASD may be misdiagnosed because behaviors are sometimes confused with other disorders.

Although health professionals may be partially right when diagnosing some of these disorders, someone also needs to look at the larger picture. Below are just a few diagnoses that children have received when the root problem was really FASD. oLearning Disabilities oDepression oADD/ADHD oObsessive Compulsive Disorder oOppositional Defiant Disorder oConduct Disorders oAutism oAttachment Disorders In addition, there are a number of other physical problems that can be a direct cause of drinking during pregnancy. Here are just a few: oHeart Defects oVision Problems oHearing Problems o Speech Disorders o Facial Deformities oSleep Disorders o Coordination Problems o Asthma o Cerebral Palsy o Damaged Immune System o Dental Abnormalities o Abnormal Pain Tolerance o Height & Weight Deficiencies o Seizure Disorders No amount of alcohol consumption is known to be safe during pregnancy and the type of alcohol does not make a difference. Any amount can cause damage that can’t be undone. Is there a chance that it won’t harm the child? There’s a chance, but is it really worth taking that risk? It’s like playing a dangerous guessing game. The only cause of FASD is alcohol use and it’s 100% preventable.
