Guided by a comprehensive operational assessment and long-term planning, Sholom Community Alliance has begun implementing initiatives designed to enhance the resident experience and strengthen organizational infrastructure. All this progress is made possible because of the Sholom Foundation’s generous transformational investment of over $8 million, enabling vision to translate into meaningful change across both campuses.

Some of the most visible changes are taking place in the spaces residents experience every day. Across both campuses, thoughtful enhancements to residential and shared environments are creating brighter, more welcoming settings that reflect dignity, comfort, and community.

Behind the scenes, new technology systems and workforce tools are helping teams collaborate more effectively and focus on what matters most — relationships with residents and families. Upgraded network infrastructure, improved data systems, and enhanced digital platforms are strengthening communication and decision-making, while new onboarding and leadership initiatives support caregivers and staff.

Jack and Bernie Mosow SHOLOM HOME WEST RESIDENTS As Sholom Board Member, Dan Mosow reflects on his parents, Jack and Bernie, longtime residents of the Ackerberg Campus, he does it with pride and palpable love. The stories he shares speak to the strength of their marriage and the close-knit family they built together over many years.

Jack and Bernie Mosow, both Midwestern natives, were married for 72 years and spent their final years at Sholom West. Bernie passed away at 91, shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic, and Jack passed away in December 2025 at the age of 103.

Dan, one of their six children, now lives far from his siblings, who are spread across the country. Sally is the oldest, followed

by Barbara, John, Nancy, and Ruth, the youngest. He describes his father as quiet but authoritative, while his mother was more free-spirited, bringing balance and warmth to their family.

“We were home every night, but Friday nights, for sure. We always had Shabbat dinner, and we always went to services

on Friday nights,” said Mosow.

His parents made their home at the Ackerberg Campus in their later years, where Dan says “Jack remained devoted to Bernie, watching over her and doing everything he could to support and care for the partner he had spent more of his life with than without.”

“His main goal and mission in life was to take care of my mom and treat her like a queen. And he always did,” Dan said.

Dan spoke fondly of his parents’ devotion to each other and the meaningful connections they formed with the staff at Sholom West. His father was affectionately known as “Grandpa,” and his mother was lovingly called “the Queen.” He reflected on how the staff’s genuine care and attention not only supported his parents but also created a nurturing community, a reminder of the difference Sholom makes in the lives of residents and their families.

“It is a testament to the relationships and support that make life at Sholom

so special. My dad formed close bonds with many of the staff at Sholom,” Dan said. “Everyone who was working that evening when he passed came to see him, and others who weren’t working came later to pay their respects.”

Zoom calls began as a way to stay in touch with their parents during COVID. They evolved into a cherished family routine, keeping the siblings connected with Jack and Bernie.

“It just so happens on the night that my dad passed away, we were on a Zoom call, and my wife and my oldest sister were at my dad’s apartment. Stacy went in to see our dad and came back out and said he’s gone. So he essentially passed with all of us there, which is exactly how we wanted.”

The siblings continue their biweekly Zoom calls, keeping them connected and close, no matter the miles between them.

“He was just a great, wonderful man. We just loved him.”

Alex Carlon COMMUNITY OUTREACH COORDINATOR ACKERBERG FAMILY SHOLOM WEST CAMPUS When Alex Carlon joined the Sholom staff in fall 2025, the recent college graduate was stepping into more than a new role; she was carrying forward a tradition she first shared with her grandfather as a high school student.

“I always knew throughout school that I wanted to work in a senior living community when I graduated,” said Carlon. “That stemmed back to my first job when I was in high school. I worked at my grandpa’s senior living care facility as a server.”

Carlon found a passion for communication in senior living, one

unlike anything she had experienced elsewhere. It was a different kind of communication, rooted in patience, empathy, and genuine human connection.

“I thought to myself, ‘I feel like it really suits me. We can sit in comfortable silence, or we can talk about the deepest things ever.’ I learned so much from them. And I decided this is so cool, I want to be in this environment forever,” said Carlon.

Drawn to the distinctive atmosphere of senior living and motivated by a passion for community outreach, she found her

way to Sholom, where her interests came together in a role filled with purpose.

“I found this role, and it was very serendipitous.”

Carlon’s position focuses on external partnerships, communications, and community engagement, helping connect residents with the broader Jewish community. Her inviting office, filled with cozy lighting and located just steps from the main entrance, is a welcoming space where she delights in Sholom residents stopping by to say hello.

Martin and Esther Capp DONOR FAMILY

Few families have shaped the strength and character of the Twin Cities Jewish community quite like Martin and Esther Capp. Their lives were defined not only by business success, but by enduring generosity, visionary leadership, and an unwavering commitment to Sholom.

Through the establishment of the Martin and Esther Capp Endowment Fund, they ensured that their values would continue to guide and sustain the community far into the future. Both lived well into their 90s, with Marty nearly reaching 100, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate today.

In 1946, with $1,000 borrowed from a friend and a bold vision, Marty founded Capp Homes, a company built on the belief that homeownership should be within reach for everyday families.

Through a simple catalog model, families could choose a design, receive pre-cut materials, and either build the home themselves or hire union carpenters to complete it.

When homeownership seemed beyond the reach of many, Capp Homes sought to remove what its catalog described as the “money barrier,” making it possible for countless families to achieve their dream of owning a home.

According to their daughter, Lisa Capp, past president of Capp Industries, Marty’s success in business provided the foundation for a lifetime of generous philanthropy.

That same commitment to creating opportunity and helping others became the hallmark of Marty and Esther Capp’s philanthropy. Their generosity consistently focused on strengthening both the Jewish community and the broader community, supporting those in need, and ensuring dignity and care for older adults.

Over the years, Marty and Esther, and their family foundation, gave to Sholom in many meaningful ways. They supported the St. Paul Sholom capital campaign, contributed to the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund, invested in special projects, and established and strengthened endowment support to ensure long-term sustainability.

Their philanthropy reflected both responsiveness to urgent needs and a forward-looking commitment to Sholom’s future.

They instilled in their children and grandchildren the understanding that supporting their community, including Sholom and other organizations across the Twin Cities, is both a privilege and an enduring responsibility.

Reflecting on their parents’ example, Lisa shares, “Our parents taught us that caring for others is not optional, it is part of who we are. They showed us through their actions that giving back to the community is both a responsibility and a privilege. It is truly an honor for our family to carry forward their legacy and continue supporting the institutions that meant so much to them.”

Through their generosity, and the generations they inspired, the Capp family’s commitment to Sholom stands as a perpetual legacy, a legacy of care, responsibility, and communal strength that will continue to strengthen the community for generations to come.

Easy Spring Zucchini Kugel

INGREDIENTS 2 lbs/900 g zucchini (2 large, 4-5 medium or 6–7 small) 4 large eggs 2 tsps fresh lemon zest 2–3 Tbsp chopped fresh basil 2 Tbsp chopped fresh mint ½ cup matzah meal (or almond flour or gluten-free flour) 2 tsp kosher salt 1–2 tsp black pepper 2 Tbsp olive oil

INSTRUCTIONS Step 1 Using a spiralizer or vegetable peeler, make long noodles out of zucchini.

Step 2 Preheat oven to 350°F.

Step 3 Add 2 tablespons of olive oil to a 9x13 baking dish and place in the oven to heat up while you prepare the remaining ingredients.

In a large bowl whisk the eggs with lemon zest, mint, basil, salt, pepper and matzah meal. Add zucchini and stir gently until completely mixed.

Bake for 45-55 minutes or until the edges are crispy and the kugel is set in the middle.

Step 5

Once kugel has cooked through, remove from the oven and allow to cool for at least 20 minutes before cutting. Serve at room temperature or warm.

After oil has heated in the pan for around 5-10 minutes, add the zucchini mixture to pan. Using a spatula or the back of a spoon smooth out the top.

Rachel Frank

VOLUNTEER AT THE SHALLER FAMILY SHOLOM EAST CAMPUS A native Israeli, Rachel Frank moved to St. Paul nearly four years ago with her husband of 51 years to be closer to their children and grandchildren. The transition brought her across continents, but it did not interrupt her commitment to service and human connection.

Alongside a fulfilling career in counseling and family therapy, Rachel consistently made time to volunteer. That dedication continued after retirement and followed her when she and her husband relocated to Minnesota. For Rachel, volunteering is not an obligation but an extension of who she is.

Her motivation is rooted in personal history, including her mother’s experiences during the Holocaust and Rachel’s own emotional response to visiting Germany. Those connections shaped her understanding of the

importance of bearing witness and being present for others.

In Israel, Rachel volunteered extensively with organizations, including the Women’s International Zionist Organization (WIZO). She also spent many years volunteering with Holocaust survivors. Frank listened and recorded their stories, ensuring they would not be forgotten. The work, she says, was profoundly meaningful.

“There were lots of Holocaust survivors, not as many anymore, and they needed people to talk to them and listen to the story and write it down,” said Rachel. “I did lots and lots of those stories. I met with people, and I wrote the stories, and I felt so important to be doing that work.”

At the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus, Rachel has found a natural continuation

of that calling. She volunteers by leading bingo sessions, organizing events, and helping engage residents in social activities. What matters most to her, she says, is the opportunity to truly connect.

Rachel speaks with unmistakable joy about her time with residents, many of whom now greet her by name when she arrives each Monday for bingo.

“I’m so happy to meet with the residents.

They know me by now when I come in for bingo every Monday, and everyone is so sweet and asks how I’m doing,” Rachel said. “I never heard so many compliments from people around me. It’s wonderful.”

Through her steady presence and genuine warmth, Rachel is bringing more than activities to the campus; she is bringing connection, dignity, and care, the kind that leaves a lasting impression on everyone she meets.

A JOINT MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTS OF SHOLOM FOUNDATION AND SHOLOM COMMUNITY ALLIANCE The future of Sholom is being built today — not only by the caregivers and staff who serve residents each day, but by the donors whose generosity makes that work possible.

Under the leadership of former Sholom Board President David Nirenstein and Sholom Foundation Board President Lisa Furman, a transformational investment of more than $8 million from the Sholom Foundation to Sholom Community Alliance was approved. Today, that investment is already being put into action, implementing important improvements across both campuses and enhancing the experience of residents while strengthening the systems that support compassionate care.

For more than a century, Sholom has been sustained by individuals and families who believed in building something enduring for the community. Each generation has helped strengthen that legacy, ensuring that Sholom remains a place where older adults can live with dignity, connection, and purpose.

The partnership between the Sholom Foundation and Sholom Community Alliance allows that legacy to continue. A DAY OF JOY, COMMUNITY, AND IMPACT:

Sholom’s 3rd Annual Family Fun Day More than 350 residents, families, donors, and friends gathered at Sholom’s Ackerberg Family Campus for the 3rd Annual Family Fun Day — a free, community-wide celebration filled with laughter, connection, and shared purpose. The afternoon honored Cindi and Harold Goldfine, whose longtime leadership and generosity continue to strengthen the Sholom community.

Guests of all ages enjoyed food trucks, music, and interactive activities, creating a vibrant, multigenerational atmosphere that reflected Sholom’s values of dignity, compassion, and community. Thanks to the generosity of 177 donors, the support of 77 sponsors, and the dedication of the Family Fun Day event committee — Stan Baratz, Etta Barry, Lisa Furman, Harold Goldfine, Steve Gottlieb, Mort Naiman, Michael Saxon, and Steve Schactman — the event raised an extraordinary $270,000 to enhance programs and support residents.

Looking ahead, the 4th Annual Family Fun Day will take place on Sunday, August 23, honoring the Shaller Family at the Shaller Family Campus in St. Paul. Supporters are encouraged to watch for more details and sponsorship opportunities in the coming months. .

Honoring The Shaller Family at Sholom’s Family Fun Day The Shaller family’s support and involvement with Sholom spans decades. Rossy and Richard Shaller made a lead gift that launched Sholom’s capital campaign to build what is now the Rossy & Richard Shaller Family Sholom East Campus in St. Paul.

Today, their children proudly carry that legacy forward through their continued commitment to Sholom’s mission of providing compassionate, high-quality care to seniors.

Bet Shalom Yeladim SHOLOM PARTNERSHIP BET SHALOM YELADIN PRESCHOOL IN MINNETONKA At Bet Shalom’s Yeladim Preschool in Minnetonka, an intentional partnership is bringing Pre-K students and older adults together in meaningful ways.

Through storytelling, music, and holiday celebrations, these shared experiences create genuine connections between the youngest and oldest members of our community.

Assistant Director of Bet Shalom Yeladim, Brett Thominutt, works closely with the Ackerberg Family Sholom West campus to plan and implement meaningful intergenerational programming between senior residents and Preschool and Pre-K students.

Since launching in November 2025, the collaboration has grown into a thoughtful partnership centered on Jewish values and connection.

and art activities. In December, residents traveled by bus from Ackerberg Sholom West Campus to join the children for stories and a collaborative art project.

“Sholom Home has a bus that they were able to use, and residents came here and joined our students for stories and an art project. It was a lot of fun,” Thominutt said. “Our students were getting ready for their big Hanukkah showcase, and they got to practice their songs for the Sholom residents, which was adorable.

It was super beneficial for my students, getting to practice in front of an actual audience,” said Thominutt.

Bet Shalom Yeladim focuses on kindergarten readiness while weaving Jewish values into hands-on experiences. Each month, students explore a core Jewish value as part of their curriculum. When the partnership launched in fall 2025, the value that set the journey in motion was kibud zekaynim: honoring elders.

The impact extends well beyond the visit itself. These interactions help children strengthen language development, interpersonal awareness, and conversation skills, all essential components of early childhood education. Students practice listening, asking questions, and engaging respectfully with someone from a different generation. At the same time, Sholom residents benefit from meaningful social connections and the energy that young children bring into the room.

In a Jewish preschool setting, these interactions carry even greater meaning.

Children are not just learning about values; they are living them. They see

firsthand what it means to honor elders, to build community, and to show respect across generations.

And the vision continues to grow.

Residents joined the school’s Purim parade and celebrated afterward with hamantaschen in the social hall. The team is also developing a pen-pal and adopt-a-grandparent initiatives with Rabbi Thal and the Pre-K teachers to encourage regular interaction, support early writing development, and deepen connections between students and Sholom residents.

For Thominutt, the program’s power is clear.

“Specifically, when it comes to intergenerational programming right now, I strongly feel that our students, our families and the world in general, are hungry for community. We are part of a congregation. We are perfectly situated to help foster and facilitate growing the sense of community,” said Thominutt.

With the support of donors and the collaboration between Bet Shalom and Sholom Home, this need for connection is being met, one story, one greeting card, and one shared smile at a time.
