Thanks to our community for their generous support.

Dear Community

Last year, on average, more than 10,000 older individuals were turned away from long-term care each month in Minnesota*. With more than 21,000 open senior caregiver positions in our state, Sholom’s work to serve this growing population has never been more urgent.

Amidst a current lack of funding from the State of Minnesota due to outdated reimbursement models, regulatory and compliance mandates, and continued workforce challenges, Sholom— because of your generosity—has continued to thrive and remain a vital community resource.

In 2022/5782-83, our staff continued to be guided by our Jewish values and commitment to high quality standards across all of our care communities. We are pleased to share that our systems and processes continued to keep our residents, clients, and our care teams safe. The generosity of our donors has allowed Sholom to retain talent, increase wages, and continue to provide tuition assistance to support our team’s professional development. Employee turnover rates are very low, thanks to our supportive culture and ability to uphold our investments in our workforce.

Sholom’s work alongside other aging services providers helped support a 2022 legislative bill that would increase skilled nursing reimbursement rates. While 2022’s session adjourned with multiple initiatives stalled, Sholom’s work to convene bi-partisan community members—to appropriately fund reimbursement and workforce models—will continue as a new bill has been introduced in 2023.

To say we are grateful for the thousands of supporters who helped make our work possible each day is an understatement. The names of our contributors that follow on these pages are the reason that individuals like Shelly (featured on page 5) can access transitional care and rehabilitative services. Because of our community, team members like Meredith (featured on page 9) can continue to pursue advanced education while empowering her staff and caring for clients like Shelly.

Your commitment to caring for those who have so dearly cared for us is inspiring. We hope this report demonstrates Sholom’s multigenerational impact and our commitment to living the values of care, compassion, and community.

PATIENT

When Shelly Johnson came to Sholom’s Transitional Care Unit after being diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, she faced a long road to recovery. She had suddenly lost the ability to talk, walk, or use her hands to feed herself. In the Harold and Sylvia Liefschultz Rehabilitation Therapies Program, Shelly began a three-month regimen of speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.

At one point, Shelly had the opportunity to move to another rehabilitation facility, but she chose to stay with Sholom because of the staff. “The whole thing about Sholom is that I loved the people,” she said. “They really know what they’re doing, and they are some of the kindest people I’ve ever met. The staff encouraged me every step of the way. They became like family. I felt comfortable there.”

Shelly’s positive attitude was a key ingredient for her recovery. Her care team dubbed her “The Star” in recognition of her great progress. Today, she lives independently at home and occasionally returns to Sholom’s Ackerberg Campus to visit members of her former care team.

2022 By the Numbers

3,000+ donors generously provided over $4 million of support for Sholom’s programs and operations.

Investing in our employees with 150 tuition assistance and staff support awards

totalling $167,000.

More than 1,200 families joined in hundreds of community life programs throughout the Sholom campuses that brought art, music, religious activities, outings, therapies, and many smiles.

FOUNDATION BOARD MEMBER AND DONOR

Phillip Jaffe and his sister, Colette, wanted to find the right living situation for their mom, Gloria, after she suffered a stroke. After considering all of their options, Sholom rose to the top, and Gloria has embraced life at Knollwood Place Apartments on the Ackerberg Campus.

“Sholom provides seniors like our mom a sense of community and belonging,” Phillip said. “And I’m hoping in another three decades or so, that Sholom will be an option for me.

“If you care about the Jewish community and being part of that community, I think this is something we need to support. That’s why I’ve always given.”

Meredith McCarthy MEMORY CARE PROGRAM MANAGER

Seven years ago, Meredith McCarthy began her career at Sholom as a physical therapist assistant in the rehabilitation program. She immensely enjoyed her work with patients and the camaraderie of the staff, especially the continual professional development. After six years, she stepped into a management role in the Leo and Doris Hodroff Pavilion for Memory Care.

“I really wanted to stay within the Sholom system because of the community and the values, like positivity, respectfulness, understanding, and dependability,” Meredith shared. “I’ve had lots of fantastic training and development opportunities along the way. With Sholom’s tuition assistance program,

I’m going back to school right now for a bachelor’s degree in management and psychology. I feel honored that Sholom is my partner in the process of getting where I want to be.”

Care Comes First Capital Campaign

Five years ago, the Sholom community came together and raised well in excess of $20 million to transform Sholom’s facilities, invest in systems and technology, and attract and retain the most qualified and compassionate care teams.

Sholom residents can live life fully across the continuum of care in senior living communities on both sides of the Mississippi River.

AND DONOR

Michal Daniels, a St. Paul native and retiree, has been volunteering at Sholom’s Shaller Campus for more than six years.

“It started with my dad, Harold,” Michal explained. “My mom didn’t want him at home that much after his retirement, so he found volunteer opportunities at Sholom to keep him busy and out of the house. For many years, my dad would greet people at the door or read newspapers to residents. When he wasn’t able to drive himself there anymore, I drove him and started to get involved myself.”

Michal stepped into Harold’s volunteer position helping with weekly Happy Hour, a festive occasion where residents gather to listen to music and have refreshments, bingo and other special activities. “I enjoy helping out the residents,” Michal said. “It feels good.”

Michal is also a donor to Sholom’s Annual Fund because he wants to support the employees. “Without the staff, Sholom wouldn’t be Sholom.”

In 2022/5782-83, caring for our community’s elders continued to look different, yet, as Sholom emerges from a pandemic while navigating nationwide labor shortages and outdated state reimbursement models, your generosity has truly allowed our communities to thrive.

We are pleased to debut this impact report, which will replace the spring issue of Sholom Foundation’s former Circle of Life publication. Impact reports with supporter recognition lists will now be sent one time per year; the Sholom Foundation will continue to share stories in other printed publications in the summer and fall; and we will find online opportunities to share lists of donors who make tribute gifts throughout the year.

Change continues to be a reliable constant, and, thanks to your enduring commitment, the Sholom Foundation has continued to respond to the needs of those in our quality care communities with compassion.
