comfort and accommodating atmosphere of her “other” home. We feel blessed that our mom was able to experience such quality care and concern by all who interacted with her. It enabled her, as well as us, to feel a sense of community within her Sholom Home circle of family and friends.

A Magical Relationship

J

oey Kristal and Dixie, a 9 year old Shih Tzu, have been a Pet Therapy hospice volunteer team for a year, and they love it. From the beginning, Dixie formed a bond with individuals, caregivers and families alike. Joey speaks very fondly of their first visits with an individual who preferred to be in his room. When Dixie came in, he would absolutely light up. He enjoyed watching Dixie as she sat by his feet and would stop what he was doing to visit with her. He talked about how beautiful Dixie was and often spoke with staff about his time with the dog. “Hi, Dixie” could be heard as Joey opened the door to this individual’s room and a meaningful conversation ensued. With each successive visit, their connection became stronger and more significant. Joey shared positive feelings about her experience as a hospice volunteer, “I am so happy to be able to volunteer in this way and be present with these individuals. I am sad when we lose individuals, but I know I’ve had a role in their life and Dixie helps complete that. It is an unbelievable feeling to know we’ve been a comfort to someone at the end of life. The folks we serve may have limited family members or are busy with jobs and kids or families who live out of town, which makes our roles mean that much more. Just knowing others are spending time with their loved ones relieves some of their pressure and stress.” continued on page 3

Upgrades Bring Peace of Mind and Happy Residents

I

da depends upon her nurse call pendant to reach the Home Care Staff in the Bentson Family Assisted Living Residence on the Shaller Family Campus and when she engages the pendant today, she has peace of mind. Ida knows the recent WiFi upgrade assures call signals will get through to staff without interruption and staff will immediately be there to help. With thanks to Sholom’s good friends, Michelle and Steve Shaller, the WiFi system at the Rossy and Richard Shaller Family Sholom East Campus was recently upgraded. Residents, families, and staff are extremely happy with the improvements. The nurse call pendant system in the Bentson Building is a major beneficiary of the WiFi upgrade.
