Spring 2016

SHOLOM FOUNDATION – Our mission is to raise sufficient endowment and annual funds to generate financial support for Sholom services and facilities; and to promote excellence in care to those served by Sholom for generations to come. SHOLOM – For over 100 years, providing a broad continuum of residential, social, and health care services primarily for older adults and within a Jewish environment.

Krupp Family Legacy Spans Three Generations with Maximum Impact

T

hree wonderful young women— granddaughters of the late Faye and Mayer Krupp—perfectly depict the impact of sharing a legacy with future g enerations. Sisters Shana Melendez, Sophie Krupp, and Mollie Krupp recently visited the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus to learn more about this essential community resource that their family has supported for several decades. continued on page 2

Dani and David Gotlieb Know Sholom

D

ani and David Gotlieb know Sholom. They share a strong commitment to our Jewish community and u nderstand the singular nature of Sholom and the services it provides. So, three years ago, they established the Dani & David Gotlieb Fund at Sholom Foundation in memory of Dani’s father, Leonard Atlas. This endowment fund will provide a nnual financial support for Sholom in p erpetuity.

Providing for Sholom long into the future is particularly fitting for David who grew up in St. Paul. He remembers visiting his grandmother Dani & David Gotlieb’s Family and other extended family members at the old Sholom Home East on Midway Parkway. Through his experience with Sholom over the years, seeing its presence and impact on the Jewish community, continued on page 3

Krupp Family continued from page 1. As they toured the campus and learned more about Sholom’s history beginning with the first home opened in St. Paul in the early 1900s, the sisters’ interest in Sholom was readily apparent. They asked thoughtful questions and told their own stories about their grandparents, Faye and Mayer Krupp’s connection to Sholom. They spoke as well about the continuing support their parents’ generation of Krupps has been providing for Sholom over the years. “Sholom is important in so many ways. It offers such a broad network of services that meet the needs of individuals at a time in their lives when they are so vulnerable,” says Sophie. “Unless they have a history of using Sholom, most people don’t know how much Sholom provides our community.” The siblings were intrigued to learn more about the well-utilized Employee Emergency Loan Fund that Faye and Mayer established over a quarter of a century ago to enable Sholom staff to borrow no-interest loans for help with emergency circumstances. The Fund has helped hundreds of Sholom employees over the years, who in turn, have been diligent in repaying their loans, replenishing the Fund so other Sholom staff can be helped. The well-being and skills of the Sholom direct-care staff have always been important to the Krupp family. Faye and Mayer’s children, Gary, Sandee and Debra, along with their families, have carried on their parents’ legacy to Sholom with their support of the Sholom Healthcare Academy–Sholom’s intensive, on-site clinical and customer service training and certification program for direct-care staff. Says Shana, “Investing in the skill-set and training of the staff is so important to ensure that Sholom is able to deliver top-notch care. It means so much to us to know that our family is able to help Sholom thrive and continue to provide this critical resource.” Mollie Krupp remembers how her grandfather, Mayer, would talk to her about the importance of her own education. “He also taught me about the value of giving to our community, no matter what our financial circumstances might be. He would tell me to spend wisely, so I will always be able to give something.” These three special women, a third generation of the Krupp family’s connection to Sholom, look forward to perpetuating their family’s legacy for their generation, and hopefully, for many more to come.

Dani and David Gottlieb continued from page 1. David has learned that Sholom is an integral part of the Jewish Community in the Twin Cities and beyond. He tells us, “For a significant part of my lifetime, people I have known and loved who required senior care have received it at Sholom. Once you need Sholom and make use of the services it provides, you begin to appreciate the fact that Sholom is here to serve our family and friends.” Dani’s memories revolve around her frequent visits to her father, Leonard, who resided at Sholom Home West on the Ackerberg Family Campus in St. Louis Park for several years prior to his passing in 2012. She tells us that the decision for her father to move to Sholom was difficult for both Leonard and his family, but he was in need of the kind of care that Sholom could provide. She was relieved to know that Leonard was in good hands at Sholom. Dani recalls getting to know both Leonard’s caregivers and the residents during the years he resided at Sholom. She remembers the time she met a very sweet resident in the elevator and ended up taking a stroll around Sholom with her. Interacting with the residents helped Dani to get to know the community in which her father lived.

ingrained in the hearts of so many individuals and families it has served. The Gotliebs are very clear about what kind of legacy they would like to pass on to their five children, Joey Finkelstein, Jason Finkelstein, Elli Gotlieb, Asa Gotlieb, and Zoe Gotlieb. They want their children to remember how important love and enjoyment of family and friends were to Dani and David. They would like to be remembered for their willingness, ability, and commitment to provide for their family and their community while adhering to values from a Jewish perspective. They see their grown children already getting involved in their communities and hope that they will continue along that path during their lifetimes. From a Sholom perspective, it is friends like Dani and David Gotlieb who have created their own legacy of support for Sholom that will encourage future generations to do the same.

Why Sholom Matters . . . Sheldon Masnek Knows Why

S

heldon and Sally Masnek have been living at Knollwood Place Apartments for almost eight years. Last fall, Sheldon found himself in need of the services provided by the Temporary Care Unit (TCU) at Sholom Home West. He had an infected wound that took several weeks to heal. While he didn’t expect to spend so much time at Sholom West, Sheldon tells us that he was very pleased with the care he received. “The staff was both professional and caring, treating me with dignity and respect. I can tell anyone who goes to a nursing home for short- or long-term care, that the magic words ‘thank you,’ go a long way in showing appreciation for one’s caregivers. They work hard and deserve to receive a grateful word.”

Sheldon was very satisfied with his stay at Sholom and is happy to share his experience with others. He is also pleased that the nutrition staff responded positively to his suggestion regarding a way to enhance the dining experience at Sholom West. “At every meal, I was asked to circle my selection from a list of items that were offered for that meal. Not every item I selected was to my liking. The nutrition staff has to accommodate many different needs, low salt, low fat, soft foods, etc.,—how do they know what works and what doesn’t? I’m sure folks are pretty vocal when they don’t like something, but what would be a good method of review? I suggested that, along with the food selection list, there be a method of review of the menu items at every meal. That way, the nutrition staff gets feedback about the food right away—how it was served, what was good about it or what just didn’t work.” Sheldon’s suggestion was passed along to Becky Kammeyer, Campus Director of Nutrition Services, who tells us that she and her staff appreciate Sheldon’s suggestion and are working on a system that will enable the residents to review the meals and provide immediate feedback to the nutrition staff. Sheldon particularly enjoyed the programs and activities offered at Sholom Home West as well as the fact that Sally could join him for these programs at any time by just walking through the link from Knollwood to Sholom. Both Sally and Sheldon are very grateful for the care that enabled Sheldon to return to his home at Knollwood Place. Note: In the time since we interviewed Sheldon for this article, he has moved to Sholom Home West where he now resides and Sally is a regular visitor.

Friends and Family Dedicate a Gift of Memory Boxes to the Hodroff Memory Care Pavilion in Loving Memory of Eva Taran

S

ince the day that Phillips Memory Care opened on the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus in 2009, residents have had Memory Boxes outside their rooms, helping each resident to recognize their new home and feel more comfortable because of the familiarity with the photos and objects just outside their doorway. Recently, family and friends of Eva Taran provided the means to purchase memory boxes for the residents of Hodroff Memory Care on the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus. Our mom, Eva Taran, lived at Hodroff Memory Care for over five years, where she received a great deal of tender, loving care. She was blessed with special and deep connections with many staff members who cared for her on a regular basis during much of that time. Eva Taran Our family has also been blessed with love and support from friends and family and we’re incredibly grateful for the many donations they made in our mom’s memory. Their generosity made it possible to provide the memory shadow boxes for every current resident of Hodroff Memory Care, as well as the many that will reside in memory care for years to come. Our hope is that these memory boxes will allow for every resident to be celebrated and loved for their entire life history: past accolades, celebrated events, treasured family memories and also for their respected current self. Our mom was a compassionate and loving woman who valued true and close relationships with family and friends; she would be so very touched and honored to know that these boxes will provide current and future residents with great opportunities to make easier and deeper connections with staff, volunteers and visitors. —The Family of Eva Taran

Memory boxes are a wonderful way to allow residents to display knick-knacks, photos, and other items that hold meaning for them. While the boxes are great for the residents, they can be beneficial to the employees of the facilities as well; e specially on dementia care wings. The boxes provide a way for those working with individuals with Alzheimer’s dementia to get to know their residents a little better. Pictures are documented moments in our lives that we want to remember. Each picture of ourselves has a story behind it; something that makes us who we are—no matter what the picture, each one has a story and is something we want to remember. Wow! Seven out of ten of us don’t even have a will, let alone a Charitable Legacy Plan Are you one of those seven? There are several reasons why you should create a will, many if not all pertain to just about everyone:

b

You can control where and how your estate will be distributed;

b

You can make specific bequests to family members and other people who are important in your life;

b

You can make charitable bequests to your favorite charity—might that be Sholom Foundation?

b

It may save taxes and control unnecessary expenses in the administration of your estate; and,

b

Most importantly, if there is no will, the state determines how your estate—no matter how large or how small—is distributed, regardless of your good intentions. The bottom line is that whatever the size of your estate, you have the ability to leave a legacy for your family, loved ones, AND for the world you live in, if only you take the first step. Please give Joel Mandel a call at 952.939.1593 to learn more creating a maximum impact and leaving a powerful legacy.

Why Sholom Matters...

Aaron J. Gimpel Lou Ann Bongard Marilyn & Harvey Chanen Sharlene Ladin Harriet Lane Peggy & Joel Mandel Ruth Ann Schumeister Louis Goldberg Earl Goldberg Linda & Stewart Goldberg Barry Goldblatt Connie & Harold Weisberg Fannie M. Goldman Susan & Richard Goldman

Just a little gift in memory of Dolores Stamper. We would like it put towards the Wednesday morning music program and your iPod project [at the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus]. Mom got so much enjoyment out of both these programs, even as she went downhill. Five days before she passed, she barely was responding to me. I came in, she had her head phones on, and was smiling and tapping her fingers to the music. This, and her singing along and playing something on Wednesday mornings are some of my fondest memories. The day before she passed, the music therapist came in and played the harp and sang for us. It soothed Mom and brought comfort to both Mom and me. Our thanks, Ron Stamper & family

Sholom Auxiliary Endowment Funds The Sholom Auxiliary provides countless volunteer hours and crucial financial resources for the comfort of Sholom residents. What if you could ensure that your annual support of the Sholom Auxiliary would continue when you are no longer here to write that check? You can! Consider establishing your own named Auxiliary endowment fund or donate to any of the existing Auxiliary endowment funds listed here. 4% of every Auxiliary endowment fund is used annually for the benefit of Sholom clients. All gifts and beneficiary designations should be made payable to: Sholom Foundation, for the benefit of the Sholom Auxiliary. To find out more about creating your own Sholom Auxiliary Endowment, contact Barbara Brooks at 952.939.1594.
