he 10th anniversary party at the Rossy & Richard Shaller Family Sholom East Campus was terrific. State fair-themed, the Great Sholom Get-Together featured a live band, games for kids of all ages, balloons a-plenty, and of course Kosher hot dogs and delicious sweet corn. The parking lot was tented in festive colors on the sunny September afternoon, and Vikings fans watched the game on the big screen inside the Mains Auditorium. Residents, families, staff, board members, and neighbors joined in the fun.

The Shaller Campus opened February 24, 2009, a chilly winter day, but the beautiful new building was warm and welcoming. The exciting day brought along great memories from the Midway Parkway building. One resident, upon seeing his new room, exclaimed, “You definitely assigned me to the wrong area.

This place is way too nice and I’m not paying more than I paid at the old building!”

At the groundbreaking ceremony in 2006, little did people realize how tremendous and wonderful the new site, care, and services would become for our residents and as a resource to the community.

Allen Freeman, who co-chaired the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus Capital Campaign along with Rhoda and Don Mains, spoke at the 10th anniversary celebration. “We are amazed and in awe that 10 years have flown so quickly. It is gratifying to know the hard work of so many donors and volunteers has paid off, even more than we imagined.” Barbara Klick, Sholom CEO remarked, “We are proud to be celebrating this milestone. The campus has grown and everywhere we turn, there are great things happening. Sholom’s reputation among the community and health professionals is exemplified by our 5-Star Quality Status and national recognition by U.S. News & World Report.”

ewspaper and social media report daily on the brutality and crime in our community and across the globe. In an age where diminished tolerance, domestic and workplace violence, anti-Semitism, and terrorist threats are all too real, Sholom is taking proactive steps to increase safety and security measures on our campuses.

Sholom’s priority is the safety, security, and well-being of our residents, program participants, staff, and visitors. Sholom provides care and services for more than 1,000 individuals daily, most of whom are vulnerable adults. Sholom has a count of 85 egress doors throughout all our buildings, multiple driveways and parking lots. Sholom, with a host of vulnerabilities, has embarked upon a $165,000 strategic effort to strengthen our properties against violence and intruders. Part of the Care Comes First Capital Campaign, this initiative is even more pressing as we consider the perils and intimidations which have faced the Jewish Community over the past several months.

Already completed is an upgrade to the secure door/ID badging system. Wifi access has been expanded enabling seamless communications via mobile device. The Safety & Security Plan incorporates new and upgraded equipment in an integrated system to bolster security and protect people and property.

The next two components include the purchase and installation of an Informacast Communications Device, a mass notification communications system, and Security Cameras.

The Informacast will:

• Send emergency notifications and instructions via telephone, computer, and mobile devices with audio and text. Staff will receive immediate instructions, while those outside Sholom receiving the notification will be given directions.

• Initiate lockdowns of all doors and area sectors to secure buildings on Sholom campuses.

In the case of an active threat requiring buildings to be locked down, the Informacast will facilitate this action with one keystroke on a computer.

• Issue pre-set emergency dispatches, status updates, and “All Clear” messages.

• Initiate speedy building evacuations should that become necessary.

• Issue severe weather alerts.

The new and enhanced Security Cameras will: • Record based upon motion sensitivity and/or time frame.

• Allow for taped footage review by authorized staff from remote locations.

• Permit wide range coverage.

• Include additional state-of-the-art coverage.

How Can We All Not Be Excited About Sholom? By Steve Gottlieb – President Sholom Foundation

T

his past September marked the official beginning of my term as President of the Sholom Foundation Board of Directors, and I cannot be prouder to take on this role.

So, why am I so excited?

I’m thrilled to be part of the organization which raises funds to support Sholom. I am gratified to see the support from the community as the Sholom Foundation establishes new and increases endowment funds, creates new legacy gifts, and Steve Gottlieb encourages contributions to assist the seniors in our community every day.

Sholom Foundation proudly added $1.5 million to the Sholom operating budget during fiscal year 2018/2019.

In the last year, we raised $4 million in current gifts and future pledges and our work is ongoing. I am humbled to follow in the footsteps of my predecessors, and I am grateful for the thousands of donors who support the Sholom Foundation every year.

Sholom provides great care and high quality programming, while being fiscally responsible.

Both the Shirley Chapman Sholom Home East and Sholom Home West were recently awarded the Five Star ranking by the Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This is the highest ranking possible and one awarded to only 20 percent of all nursing homes and is the result of our staff’s great work. Sholom’s dedicated and hardworking leadership has made significant and necessary changes.

Quality of care is first and foremost in all decision-making.

Our Five Star ranking is proof of what has been accomplished. Sholom is an excellent steward of its resources, as evidenced by exceeding their budget over the past three years. Finally, the staff has fantastic vision with an understanding of how to prosper today and in the future. They articulate their thoughts and present the path to get there. I hope you have the pleasure to meet Barb Klick, Sholom CEO. You will know Sholom is in good hands.

The fantastic volunteers who comprise the Sholom Foundation Board, the Sholom Alliance Board, and the Sholom Auxiliary Board, are another example of the great things happening at Sholom. The boards are comprised of business leaders, visionaries and people with skill sets poised to assist the organization. The

energy they possess and share is intoxicating. The Auxiliary continues to shine and members are always there and ready to assist. In addition to Board volunteers, scores of people volunteer directly with the Sholom Community every day. Out of the goodness of their hearts, they offer assistance to those who need it most. There is nothing more heartwarming than seeing the smiles they create.

The Sholom Foundation is also charged with raising funds for Sholom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign. The community made the right decision several years ago to embark on a campaign to raise much needed dollars to transform the physical structure, add needed technology, invest in its people and to save for the future. Our professional team led by Joel Mandel wisely added Mort Naiman to run the campaign. Polly & Mike Saxon and Amy & Stan Baratz have assumed the roles of Campaign Chairs, a great addition to this important effort. A large team of volunteers is also helping to raise funds. Please say yes when you are asked to meet and talk about the Campaign. To date the campaign has raised over $14 million with many solicitations still ongoing.

Hundreds of donors have contributed, demonstrating the high level of commitment the community has to Sholom and its success.

Do we have challenges before us? Yes, there are still many things to accomplish and together we will achieve great things. How can I not be excited? Everything is in place for Sholom to continue to thrive. The question in my mind is HOW CAN YOU NOT BE EXCITED? I look forward to working with you and continuing to make Sholom the best it can be.

Care Comes First Capital Campaign Tops $14 Million Mark

S

holom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign, designed to assist both the Ackerberg Family Campus in Minneapolis and the Shaller Family Campus in St. Paul has surpassed $14 million in donations since the Campaign commenced, and we are on pace to reach $20 million in early 2020. The Campaign Cabinet is focusing its efforts on a number of priorities, understanding there are many needs to be fulfilled within the Campaign. The first priority includes renovations and upgrades for the Knollwood Place Apartments, Sholom’s independent living building constructed over 30 years ago. Work is scheduled to commence in spring 2020, and will include: a beautifully remodeled warm and welcoming lobby and lounge, a streamlined modern commercial kitchen, a newly designed Nosh Nook and deli, a stunning and easily accessible dining room, comfortable enriched game rooms, an updated community room, a new music room, and upgraded and handicapped accessible public restrooms.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the effort to revitalize Sholom. Our collective successes are making it possible to see our community treasure, Sholom, become even stronger, better, and rejuvenated.

Kerry and Scott Bader Capital Campaign Cabinet members said, “We are personally involved and have had family and friends at Sholom. We have a sense of loyalty, gratitude and affection for what Sholom means in our community and we believe in the mission of the organization. Sholom is taking excellent care of our most vulnerable and precious population – our seniors.”

The Capital Campaign Cabinet has close to 50 volunteers meeting with prospective donors, sharing the Sholom story and outlining the imperatives of the Care Comes First Capital Campaign. Cabinet member Sonia Ungerman expressed, “Sholom is the only organization in the Twin Cities dedicated to seniors that offers a Jewish environment and serves over 1,000 individuals daily. With a $60 million budget and more than 950 employees, Sholom is proud to be the largest Jewish organization in Minnesota. We look forward to the community’s support and being be part of these marvelous exciting changes at Sholom. L’dor v’dor – each generation supporting the next!”

Snowbird events are being planned for Palm Springs, California, hosted by Kerry & Scott Bader and Molly & Sid Bader, and in Scottsdale, Arizona, hosted by Polly & Mike Saxon. A get-together is also being planned for Florida.

Move Over Beyoncé, Here Comes Eddy!

“I

t’s the Little Things in Life” that are often the biggest things that count! Just ask Eddy. Make way for Sholom’s new singer-song writer, Eddy Cohen. During a delightful jam session, Eddy, a witty and sharp dynamo of a resident at Sholom Home West, shared her exuberance for life sprinkling the conversation with her great sense of humor.

Music is a crown jewel at Sholom, and Eddy exemplifies the thrill of connecting with melody and musical arrangement. What can be better than hearing the joy and pleasure in residents’ voices and watching their exuberant smiles while singing the chorus of old favorites. Music transcends age, gender, and ability. Sholom is expert at using music to tap into joyful memories and to bring fun and enjoyment to Sholom’s residents.

Eddy, now age 95, is dabbling in the world of music. She joins Keaton Judy, a Sholom music therapist, for a weekly songfest focusing on hits from the 1930’s, ’40’s, and ’50’s. Eddy recently commented about “the little things in life,” and remarked, “Wouldn’t it be great if we could write a song Eddy Cohen about that?” Seizing the moment, Keaton and Eddy began to collaborate and the results are simply amazing. Eddy has recorded the original song (lyrics at right) to the delight of friends and family and bringing her immense pride and enjoyment.

Eddy continues to derive satisfaction from her lifelong love of music and song and there is no surprise that the song she wrote captures her feelings about life, love, and happiness. “It’s the little things that make us happy…”

Eddy’s daughter said, “Let me thank Keaton, as well as so much of the staff at Sholom for the wonderful, kind compassionate work that you do. My brothers and I are truly grateful not only for the care that Mom receives but also all the extras like creating this collaboration that really add to her happiness at a time in her life that can often be sad and lonely.”

Let the Sunshine In

A

t Sholom there is hope and promise of breaking through the fog of dementia and letting the sunshine in. Sholom is celebrating innovation, marking the completion of first year programming developed to make a difference in the lives of individuals living with dementia. Imagine a once-vibrant individual who was a teacher, raised a family, and was a dedicated community volunteer. Now he is barely able to communicate and often lives in his own world. Is this the outlook for his future? At Sholom, innovative programs focusing on relieving the effects of dementia are demonstrating success and offer great potential. Music and Memory, a long standing program at the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus, has entered a new phase providing more assistance, expanding its reach, and including residents at the Ackerberg Family Sholom West campus. New to Sholom, Opening Minds through Art, and the beloved Music and Memory are evidenced-based programs for persons living with dementia that help end social isolation, build bridges across age differences, and most importantly, enable individuals with cognitive impairments to find their voice and an ability to communicate.

The brain has many music receptors, and melodies can awaken an individual in a way that verbal and physical cues miss. Sam is a prime example, having moved into Sholom following a stroke leaving him with limited language skills, often unintelligible. After a session with his iPod, listening to his music catalogue of polka favorites, Sam’s eyes opened wide and he moved his arms as if conducting an orchestra. He reached out to the volunteer assisting him and said, “I’m so happy!” and two minutes later, he remarked, “I’m so happy I met you.”

Opening Minds through Art matches seniors living with dementia and younger volunteers in art-based activities designed to open communication. Similar to the music

program, creativity and art-making can access different parts of the brain to stimulate awareness and communication. Sally’s story gives a glimpse into why Sholom offers these very important programs.

Sally lives mostly in her own world, and her repetitious mantra is “I want to go home.” At the end of a recent art session, Sally looked up and said, “I’m happy today!” Another participant, upon hearing praise for her art work, surprised the group by stating, “Oh, do you really think so?” Art, like music, often has the capability to reach an individual when other modalities fail to create that spark.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Art projects opening communication through creativity.

“Dementia, including Alzheimer’s and vascular types, is a term covering a wide range of specific medical conditions. These disorders can trigger a decline in thinking/cognitive skills and can account for memory loss, loss of language skills and can affect behavior, feelings and relationships.” Sholom is proud to offer Music and Memory and Opening Minds through Art which ameliorate the varying effects of this condition.

We are grateful for the generous support from the Legacy Heritage Fund that has enabled us to provide intergenerational programming for our senior residents.

The three-year grant which made these programs possible was facilitated by the Association of Jewish Aging Services, an umbrella organization of not-for-profit community-based organizations, rooted in Jewish values, which promotes and supports the delivery of services to an aging population. We also thank the Sholom Auxiliary for two years funding of a matching grant. A Shining Light at Knollwood Place Apartments – A New Ner Tamid

R

esidents of the Knollwood Place Apartments are excited, thrilled, and very proud to announce the installation of a new, custom made, one-of-a-kind Ner Tamid, or Eternal Light, in their synagogue.

Adding to the special nature of this beautiful fixture, is the Synagogue itself. The Knollwood Synagogue plays an important and esteemed role in the life of the Knollwood Place Apartments Community with Shabbat, holiday, and sometimes weekday services, and furthers Yiddishkeit and Jewish life honoring customs, traditions, and learning. Co-located in the Jack & Rochelle Sutin Center Lounge, the Knollwood residents are gratified and proud to have such an important facet of Jewish Life as a synagogue and its sacred components situated within their own home.

The Ner Tamid is carefully suspended, adjacent to the Ark which holds and safeguards the Torah scrolls. It shines day and night as a symbol of God’s eternal presence and as a reminder of the holiness of the Torah. Further, the Ner Tamid is a reminder of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem.

This Ner Tamid is special as it was hand crafted by Jack Strickland, a resident of the Knollwood Place Apartments. Jack has resided at Knollwood for two years and his creative skills and handy-work have been appreciated across the Sholom campus since his arrival. He researched and developed the design for the Ner Tamid to ensure it was perfect.

Maurine Ziv, President of the Tenant Council and Susanne Silverman, both representing the Committee for the Ner Tamid, said, “Jack spent many hours providing maximum enhancement and beauty to our Sanctuary. We are so appreciative of his talent and his dedication to Knollwood Place Apartments.” Other committee members included Harriet Amdur, Shayne Karasov, and Jack Strickland.

Jack appreciated the challenge to learn and understand the significance of the Ner Tamid and its impact on observance and tradition. He said, “The eternal qualities which this light represents, are important to all of us, regardless of faith. I’m happy to share my skills with my friends at Knollwood.” Knollwood Place Apartments, as all of Sholom, is imbued with Jewish customs, traditions, and values, welcomes all under its umbrella.

At Knollwood Place Apartments, Kibbitzing is an Art Form: Comfort, Conversation, and Community

T

his spring, when the sun is shining brightly and the snow has melted, flowers are blooming, and shrubs and trees are regaining their foliage, residents of Knollwood Place Apartments will have the pleasure of enjoying outside spaces made even nicer with beautiful new patio furniture made possible by the estate of Larry Leventhal. Outdated and worn lawn furniture has been replaced enabling residents to enjoy the beautiful setting on the west side of the Apartments and encouraging conversation, playing cards, and just relaxing. Larry, an attorney in the Twin Cities, made provisions in his Will to honor his mother, Sally Leventhal, with a gift to the Knollwood Place Apartments. Sally was a long-time resident of Knollwood and she loved living here. She appreciated and participated in many activities and especially enjoyed musical programs and large events in the community room. Not only was Knollwood Place Apartments Sally’s residence, but it was also home to her two sisters, Faye Shafer and Dorothy Schanfield, with all three residing at Knollwood at the same time.

Larry’s sister, Paula Maisel, in conversation with Sholom CEO, Barbara Klick, discussed options to recognize Larry’s generosity and to honor their mother, Sally.

Paula, who worked as a social worker at Knollwood Place Apartments, loved the idea of residents enjoying the outdoors and maximizing their comfort on the Knollwood patio. Soon thereafter, new, durable, and comfortable outside furniture, tables, and chairs were selected which now grace the patio at the Knollwood Place Apartments.

The foresight of individuals, like Larry Leventhal who made provisions in his Will to benefit Sholom, create opportunities for giving, even after someone has passed on. A bequest is one of the easiest estate gifts to make. With the help of an attorney, you can include language in your will Larry Leventhal z”l or trust specifying a gift to be made to the Sholom Foundation as part of your estate plan. The community demonstrated thunderous support for the new campus. Over 3,000 gifts were made to the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus Capital Campaign, totaling more than $38 million to develop the new campus on Kay Avenue. Innovative models of services and programs continue to be lauded daily by residents and families. The cost to provide for our loved ones, however, increases every year. he beautiful thing about a named endowment fund is that once established, it will continue in perpetuity.

Generations may come and go, but the impact on people’s lives is everlasting.

Not long ago, the daughter of a Sholom Home West resident told us how grateful she was for the high caliber care and attention her mother was receiving. She marveled at the compassion and patience of those who work with her mother and other residents at Sholom.

Named endowment funds are recognized in perpetuity on the Walls of Honor at both Sholom campuses.

When she asked how she could help to ensure that Sholom retain such wonderful staff members, we answered that many individuals and families have established named endowment funds with the Sholom Foundation which provide annual support for things such as staff in-service training, academic scholarships, and other benefits for Sholom staff.

Often named endowments are created with a specific purpose in mind, such as staff training and education, while others are created for general purposes – providing annual support where it is needed most.

A Sholom Foundation Named Endowment Fund may recognize the donor and it can honor or memorialize a loved one as well. Named Endowment Funds may be established with a cash gift, or a pledge that may be paid over a period of time, or with a deferred gift such as a bequest, Individual Retirement Account (IRA), or a gift of life insurance. You may wish to join with parents, siblings, or children to establish a family endowment fund.

Residents sauntered across the street to the Mississippi Market. Delicious coffee and cookies enjoyed by all.

Intergenerational programs are exciting for residents and kids alike and smiles abound. Thanksgiving art projects produced decorations for holiday tables.

Cardio is the word! The David E. Feinberg Vitality Center recently added a new treadmill to the bank of cardio equipment. Check out the gym and warm water therapy pool. Both are warm, healthy, and inviting on these cold winter days.

Shaller residents celebrate Succot from an intergenerational perspective.

Sholom helps eliminate hunger and food insecurity. Residents, families, and friends joined to prepare food packages for distribution to local communities by Harvest Pack with thanks to a grant from Julie & Bob Mast and the Sholom Auxiliary.
