T
he Longboat Key Club is seeking to add 300 tourism units to its Islandside property and it has been decided that residents will vote on this change via a mail-only ballot. Ordinance 2015-01 was adopted Jan. 5 after being given its second reading and public hearing at a regular meeting of the Longboat Key Town Commission. The ordinance received its first reading and public hearing at a Special Meeting of the Longboat Key Town Commission on Dec. 10, 2014. The proposed plan, requested by Ocean Properties for their Islandside property, would include a hotel, meeting center, and other facilities, such as restaurants. Islandside traditionally has had such facilities. No change in allowable density is being sought by Ocean Properties. At the Jan. 5 meeting, a representative from the Inn On the Beach Association, which partners with Ocean Properties at the existing Longboat Key Club property, stated the association is supportive of the measure and expects to continue to be involved in the developments.
At the Dec. 10 meeting, the commission voted to have the Longboat Key Club pay for the expenses required to mail the ballots. Several parties are required to approve the measure for the issue to be decided by mailonly ballot: the Longboat Key Town Commission, the Supervisors of Elections in Sarasota County and Longboat Key, and the Department of State. A mail-ballot election plan will need to be submitted to the Department of State for approval before the measure can be passed. Because a significant portion of the Longboat Key population is absent during May, the mail-only ballot was deemed the best measure for collecting every vote during the election. Mail-only ballots are sent 20 days prior to the election, with voters being allowed until 7:00 p.m. on Election Day to return the ballots. Ocean Properties, based in Delary Beach, purchased the Longboat Key Club in 2012. The company also owns the Chart House, which it bought in 2013, and has ownership shares in Clearwater Beach’s Sandpearl Resort.

Business Briefs Moore's Stone Crab Restaurant planning renovations Moore's Stone Crab Restaurant, known as much for its long history as its fresh seafood, plans to partner with the team behind Caragiulo's Restaurant for renovations. Plans include bringing the restaurant's electrical and plumbing up to code and improving the restaurant's interior, including creating a better view of Sarasota Bay. Restaurant representatives will have to appear before the Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board later this month to have a site plan and variance approved. The Longboat Key Town Commission will have to approve the site's change to commercial zoning as well as a comprehensive plan and land use map. Moore's first opened its doors in 1967.

The most expensive residence sold in Sarasota County in November was located on Longboat Key. The 6,737 square foot house, located on Gulf of Mexico Drive, sold for $5.75 million. The seller purchased the property in April 2010 for $6.65 million. Also in November, a 3,534 square foot home with beach access sold for $2,895,000.

he beach that was voted the “Best in America” by Dr. Beach in 2011 is undergoing some serious renovations. The $21.5 million Siesta Beach Park Improvements Project is currently underway and the beach that we all know and love will be even better once it’s complete. Local company Jon F. Swift Construction was chosen as the construction management for the beach improvement project. According to their website, “The project includes upgrades to existing facilities, an increase in parking spaces and additional new public facilities. The design features a new, elevated East concession/restroom building that will allow visitors to enjoy sweeping views of the beach. New tennis courts, a new children’s playground and new picnic shelters are just some of the other new
amenities. The site will include a new 15’ wide pedestrian esplanade and repairs to the existing historic shelter and courtyard will bring them back to their former glory.” The first phase of the Siesta Beach Improvements Project was completed in July, with the opening of the new parking lot, which features over 100 new parking spaces. Completion of the Siesta Beach Park Improvements Project is set for December 2015. Construction of the East concession building is underway, as well as installation of the new playground. Twenty-four picnic shelters have also been installed. In the meantime, beach-goers are invited to continue to visit the beach and have a firsthand look at the transformation. In Brief Say “I Do” again at Siesta Key’s 26th annual Valentine’s Day vow renewals On Feb. 14, married couples are invited to Siesta Key Beach to renew their wedding vows. The annual renewal of vows ceremony, held by Sarasota County Parks and Recreations, attracts hundreds of couples to the Siesta Beach Pavilion. This year’s ceremony will be presided over by Sarasota judicial magistrate Edward Wilson and his wife, Rebecca. The ceremony will begin at 6:00 p.m., but participants are invited to arrive as early as 4:30 p.m. Music will begin at 5:00 p.m. and light refreshments will be offered. The fee is $10 per couple. T
he $4.41 million reconstruction of three crumbling erosion control groins on Bradenton Beach will begin as scheduled this month and won't be delayed because a seasonal shorebird on Anna Maria Island, the red knot, was recently listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Charlie Hunsicker, director of the Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Department, said, "Consultation between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is nearly complete and there is no anticipated delay for the project." Constructed in the 1960s and 1970s, the three concrete erosion control groins are north of Coquina Beach in Bradenton Beach. All three are badly deteriorated and will be replaced with permeable adjustable groins. Unlike conventional erosion control groins, permeable adjustable groins can be moved to other areas to be more effective if deemed necessary. The new groins will prevent erosion during storm surges that could adversely affect Gulf Drive and local structures as
well as nesting and refuge areas used by wildlife. The red knot is one of the longest distance migrants in the animal kingdom. With a wingspan of only 20 inches, it flies more than 9,300 miles south in the fall from the Canadian Artic to Argentina and Chile in South America and then returns to Canada in the spring. Jim Stephenson, president of the Manatee County Audubon Society, said, "The red knots wintering on Anna Maria Island are probably a splinter group of the species' larger mass migration and don't continue on to South America. It appears they like what they see on the island and stay in Florida until it is time to return north in the spring to breed and nest in Canada." The overall number of red knots has declined in recent years because of climate change and coastal development. Their numbers suffered greatly in the 2000s when one of their main food sources, horseshoe crab eggs, was reduced because of overharvesting of horseshoe crabs for bait at Delaware Bay on the U.S. coast.

Repairs include expansion bearings and joints, beams, fender walls, sidewalks and the electrical system in the tender house. The $4 million project is expected to be completed in April and will extend the life of the bridge, which was built in 1956, another 10 years.
Traffic Woes Force AMICCO to Perform Off the Island Heavy traffic on Anna Maria Island during last year's tourist season has caused the Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus & Orchestra (AMICCO) to move two performances for the 2014-2015 season off the island. Last year, traffic congestion caused some of AMICCO's musicians, choir members and patrons to be late or completely miss some performances. As a result, AMICCIO's upcoming performances of "Afternoon With Amadeus" and "An Island Adventure With Gilbert & Sullivan"

Bradenton Beach City Pier's Renovation Nearly Complete Duncan Seawall's construction crews are nearly finished with the $1.4 million renovation of Bradenton Beach's City Pier. A soft opening for the public was planned for Jan. 23 with an official grand opening in February. Renovations began last August and were necessary after the pier was damaged in 2012 by boats that broke free from their nearby anchorage during Tropical Storm Sandy.
Anna Maria Island Gets Cell Tower in February For years, residents on Anna Maria have had trouble using their cell phones on the island. That will end by the end of February when a new 150-foot-tall cell tower goes up just outside City Hall on Gulf Drive.

21st annual Siesta Key Craft Festival
ST. ARMANDS CIRCLE - Let the fun begin on Feb. 17 at this year’s Mardi Gras celebration at St. Armands Circle. The party begins at 6:00 p.m. with the Mardi Gras "Strut" parade around the Circle, lead by the Dixieland Band and featuring Joe Bruno's New Orleans Hot Dogs, the Mardi Gras King, St. Armands celebrities and more. There will be live entertainment throughout the Circle all evening, including face painters, tarot card readers, palm readers, jugglers, tumblers and musicians galore. And of course, there will be free beads for everyone.

“Where do little fishies come from?” If you ask a fish, get ready for an awkward silence. If you ask a marine scientist, get ready for amazing answers. People of all ages can learn how ocean life renews itself during the marine-science exhibit “Oh Baby! Life Cycles of the Seas,” starting on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, at Mote Aquarium. This family-friendly, educational exhibit will invite visitors to discover ocean animals’ “romance” and reproduction, babies of many species and the survival challenges facing new generations of marine life. These topics are central to marine research around the globe, including the world-class science of Mote Marine Laboratory. Mote raises and breeds many marine species — such as sport fish for ecosystem restoration and seahorses for conservation and education. Understanding marine animal life cycles, including how and where they mate and give birth, is vital for conserving populations of keystone marine species and their future generations. “Guests of every age will be able to relate to this exhibit — its interactive games and activities are designed to get families and couples talking and get everyone thinking,” said Evan Barniskis, assistant vice president for Mote Aquarium. “Kids will be amazed by the unusual lives of baby animals, from dangerous sibling rivalries to incredible journeys. Meanwhile adults will enjoy learning about the quirks of undersea romance.” Highlights of “Oh Baby!” will include: • A baby shark touch pool with 9- to 12-inch sharks of the Pacific Ocean, species never before displayed at Mote. This display will help reveal the diversity of sharks and show a younger stage of their life cycle than many other aquarium exhibits. • A family-friendly look at marine animal courtship behaviors. • “Who Wants to Be a Sea Star?” — a multi-player, reality TV-style science quiz specially designed for this exhibit, along with many other hands-on elements. “Oh Baby!” will be open Feb. 14 through Sept. 27 during normal hours at Mote Aquarium. Siesta Key’s The Cottage is the bomb
E
ver since I first went to Siesta Key, I've been intrigued by The Cottage, a quaint restaurant tucked away on one of the side streets. You'll agree the name is quite fitting, if you've ever dipped your head underneath the bamboo roof to sneak a peek, as I have done more than a couple of times. But I never stopped to even have a cold beer because I was always been on the run and simply didn't have the time. Sad, I know. So on a recent Friday evening, after a torturous day at work, I made it my mission to go and relax at The Cottage and suck it all in. The atmosphere, of course. But when I arrived around 7:00, I was met with a slight bit of awkwardness, as I wanted to sit at a table that was tucked away to allow me to eat and review in private, but all the perfectly located two-tops were already taken. I asked about a four-top that was off to the side and probably not very desirable to most, but for me, it would do the trick. However, the hostess was quick to tell me that it was for four people and not me. Boom, shot down. Attention, restaurant owners: make sure your front-of-the-house is properly equipped to accommodate the customer, who, as we all know, is king. I politely accepted the hostess' rejection and told her I would wait for a smaller table to become available. She seemed confused and, truthfully, not very organized. Remember, it was at 7:00 at the latest, but not that busy. I don't remember if she even took my name. Regardless, I wondered off to the bar, not feeling very secure that when a two-top
opened, it would go to me. I finally felt the need to take matters into my own hands. I saw a gentleman patrolling the floor who looked like he knew what he was doing. I asked about a table and he asked me if I was interested in

sitting outside on the front patio, which is where I tried to sit, or out back in their courtyard. Out back? "What are you talking about?" I asked him. I didn't see an out back nor did the hostess tell me about it. I moseyed outside and found this paradise of a courtyard. WOW! It was freaking awesome. Soothing and comfortable, with a classical guitarist to boot. Damn! And there were numerous two-tops open. I was quick to snatch the best table near the classical guitarist, who, I must note, was AWESOME. Note to hostess: tell your customers that you have a beautiful courtyard dining area in the back. Another thing, when I told the bartender I was moving to a table, he made me close out my tab with him first. My dear bartenders and restauranteurs, find out where your customer is sitting and add the bar tab to their check. Much more pro-

fessional and convenient for the customer. Who, again, is king and should be treated as such. Shortly after I was sat, I was greeted by a young woman who was pregnant, if my memory serves me right. She didn't give me her name nor did I ask. I respect that the fact that she was working, however, she should not be working at The Cottage. She didn't have the appropriate table-side manners, if you will. A more casual dining joint like Chili's or Applebee's would better suit her, where perhaps the customer doesn't have as many expectations, but The Cottage is out of her league. In any event, I ordered the Tuna Tar Tar Tacos, which were Deep Sea Pacific Tuna topped with a light lime, avocado, cilantro and cucumber Asian dressing on crispy wontons. I also ordered the Skirt Steak over plantains with beef relish and Peruvian chimichurri sauce. I know, right? Both dishes were truthfully out of this world. Very much worth the initial aggravation and a substandard server. Hey, people, do you want me to be truthful or not? Overall, The Cottage was the bomb. It was awesome. I loved the atmosphere and the food was outstanding. Damn right I'm going back but I'm going to make sure I sit in the back courtyard and handpick my server.
