OCEARCH great white cruising the Gulf of Mexico By Beth Ludwig

12-foot-long female great white shark, which was tagged last year by research group OCEARCH, has pinged her location in the Gulf of Mexico, due west of Pinellas County, but turning south. The shark, dubbed Miss Costa after a sunglass company that is a sponsor of OCEARCH, was tagged off the coast of Nantucket, Mass., on Sept. 23, 2016. At that time, she weighed in at 1,668 pounds and was 12 feet in length, but she is still considered an immature shark. Since Miss Costa was tagged, she has clocked in more than 5,600 miles, swimming up and down the East Coast of the United States and around the Florida Keys to her current location in the Gulf of Mexico. The tagging devices on the sharks tracked by OCEARCH relay their loca-

tions to satellites every time the sharks’ dorsal fins go above the surface of the water. Miss Costa’s location, as well as other sharks tagged by OCEARCH, can be tracked online at ocearch.org.

Upham Beach project on standby

ST. PETE BEACH - The Upham Beach stabilization project that was temporarily suspended due to projected rough winter weather is expected to be reevaluated by the contractor of the job either later this month or in early February to determine when the project can resume. Once work resumes, the project should take another three to four months to complete. Two of the four

planned rock T-groin structures to slow erosion of the beach have been completed since the project started in August. Most of the beach remains open to the public.

City commissioners recently agreed to ask the Florida Department of Transportation for a lighting variance that would apply to the section of Gulf Boulevard that runs through Treasure Island, as this part of Gulf Boulevard is actually owned by FDOT. Once the variance is granted, the city will have Duke Energy install amber LED lights, which have been deemed more turtle-friendly than the standard white lights that can contribute to the turtles’ disorientation as they hatch on the beach and try to make their way to the water.

The plot thickens in Madeira Beach’s hunt for a new city manager, with former City Manager Shane Crawford throwing his hat back in the ring.

t the most recent count, nearly 40 people--38, to be exact-have applied for the vacant position of city manager in the embattled city of Madeira Beach, perhaps most interestingly, former city manager himself, Shane Crawford. Joining Crawford’s résumé for the position is a vast body of applicants with varying levels of experience, ranging from absolutely zero to pretty extensive. The city has said they are looking for applicants who have at least seven years experience in government management. Applicants include Michael Hein, Longboat Key’s former assistant town manager who was a finalist for the recent city manager vacancy in

Treasure Island; Jonathan Evans, current Riviera Beach city manager and former assistant county administrator for Sarasota County, as well as assistant city manager in Largo and city manager in Haines City; and New Port Richey Assistant City Manager Martin Murphy. Doug Andrews, the former Madeira Beach parks and recreation department director who was let go from that position, has also applied for the job. Of the 38 applicants, only one is a woman, Naples resident Margaret Wuerstle, who is currently the executive director for the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council. The Madeira Beach Board of Commissioners is now tasked with the job of weeding through the heap of

applications. The plan is to narrow the field down to five qualified applicants who will be then interviewed by the board in person. The search for a new city manager was, of course, necessitated by Crawford’s resignation last year after he was given the option to either quit or be

fired following years of turmoil within the city. Much of the turmoil stemmed from the approval of a couple of controversial hotel developments and is still continuing over the election of certain members of the board of commissioners, including Mayor Maggi Black.

North Redington nixes medical marijuana dispensaries By Jason Coffman

own commissioners in North Redington Beach recently agreed to at least a temporary ban on medical marijuana dispensaries within the town limits. The measure was passed in a 4-1 vote, with Commissioner Gary Curtis standing out as the lone dissenter. During discussion of the proposed ordinance that would ban dispensaries, Curtis pointed out that nearly 70 percent of voters in North Redington Beach voted for Amendment 2 in 2016, which legalized the sale of medical marijuana in the state of Florida. However, Jay Daigneault, the attorney for the town, said that the state statute also made a provision that allows individual municipalities to restrict dispensaries in their juridictions if they so desire.

Mayor Bill Queen’s thinking was to move forward with the ordinance to ban dispensaries for now, with the idea to wait and see what happens with other cities that are allowing dispensaries and then reevalute in the future if necessary, implying that town officials could possibly later change their minds.

news FDOT kicks off the new year with plenty of road projects on tap

ccording to a recent report by David Gwynn, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Seven Secretary, there are plenty of road construction projects on tap in the coming months for the Pinellas County beaches, the biggest of which involves replacing part of the Pinellas Bayway due to structural issues. The project, which is slated to begin this summer, includes replacing the existing two-lane drawbridge with a two-lane, fixed-span bridge between Isla Del Sol and the Tierra Verde islands. As part of the project, FDOT will also repave the existing road and replace the seawall south of the bridge, as well as construct a shared-use path on the east side of the project area and a sidewalk on the west side. FDOT will also

implement a roundabout at the Madonna Boulevard/1st Street intersection. The total cost of the project will be $57 million. Construction is expected to take around three years to complete. Gwynn also announced several planned projects for a 15-mile portion of Gulf Boulevard from Indian Rocks Beach to St. Pete Beach. Much of that work, aimed at making Gulf Boulevard safer for bicyclists and pedestrians, is expected to be done by the summer. Work is currently underway to add pedestrian crossings at several St. Pete Beach locations: Gulf Boulevard and 37th Avenue, Gulf Boulevard and 71st Avenue and Blind Pass at the St. Pete Yacht Club. Having 1,000 people a day move to Florida is also known to most people. But, rental rates, why? Many of you have read or heard of Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad, Poor Dad, describing how one dad bought property and saw his wealth and income grow, allowing him to afford a comfortable retirement versus the other dad who invested his savings in CDs and tax certificates. The point was that wealth can be created with rental housing by paying down the loan using someone else's money, earning rental income and appreciation.

The small investors who found the holes in the market continued to invest. With the current shortage of opportunities, the small investors are buying anything that will pay for itself, pushing up the property values in all of Florida.
