CLEARWATER BEACH - If all goes as planned, beachgoers looking for an easier way to get to Clearwater Beach will have another option available to them as soon as January. Clearwater Ferry, which currently offers water ferry service between downtown Clearwater, Clearwater Beach, North Clearwater Beach, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Caladesi Island and Dunedin, is working on a plan with the city of Belleair Bluffs to add a stop at the Belleair Causeway

Clearwater Beach via ferry boat will be attractive to area residents and visitors alike. The cost to park at the marina is $2 and the cost of the ferry ticket will be around $5 per adult, versus a cost of up to $30 a day to park in Clearwater Beach. Sofer said she and Belleair Bluffs City Clerk Debra Sullivan had recently taken a trial run on a ferry from the Belleair Causeway Marina to Clearwater Beach, a pleasant journey that lasted about 20 minutes. Sofer pointed out

The city of Clearwater has been exploring numerous options to alleviate the ongoing traffic problems in Clearwater Beach, and the service offered by Clearwater Ferry seems to be doing its part. The company currently operates two ferry boats and plans to add a third boat to its fleet. The new boat will have a capacity of nearly 100 passengers, versus the two smaller boats currently in service, which can transport 21 and 42 passengers each. Spearheading the proposal for the new marina stop was Belleair Bluffs Commissioner Suzy Sofer, along with Clearwater Ferry’s Trish Rodriquez. According to Sofer, the cost advantage of parking at the Belleair Causeway Marina and traveling to

that disembarking the boat in Clearwater Beach was easy and the hassle-free boat ride was an enjoyable alternative to battling Clearwater Beach’s bumper-to-bumper traffic. “I would pay almost any amount of money to avoid the traffic nightmare in Clearwater Beach,” said resident Tom Schincarol. “This sounds like an inexpensive option, and you get to enjoy a nice ride on the Intracoastal.” Pinellas County owns the marina, but according to Sofer, county representatives are on board with the plan also. The Belleair Bluffs City Commission is expected to discuss the plan further at their upcoming commission meeting. The current ferry schedule has departures every hour, with more frequent departures during peak times.

TREASURE ISLAND - It is common knowledge that Tampa Bay is deadly for pedestrians and bicyclists, and that also goes for the beach’s main thoroughfare, Gulf Boulevard, with both pedestrians and drivers to blame for accidents and near-misses. In data collected over the past four years, over 70 pedestrians have been injured while trying to cross Gulf Boulevard, and there have been at least another 10 fatalities. The Rotary Club of the Gulf Beaches has taken notice and they have spearheaded a campaign, in partnership with Bike/Walk Tampa Bay, the Treasure Island Police Department and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, aimed at increasing the public’s awareness of the shared responsibilities of pedestrians and drivers in keeping our streets safe. The beach will have to wait for renourishment INDIAN ROCKS BEACH - According to Indian Rocks Beach Mayor R.B. Johnson, it looks like the city’s beaches will probably have to wait until 2018 for any sand renourishment. Hurricane Hermine took a big bite out of the sand up and down the coast of Florida in September, along with Tropical Storm Colin in August. Since then, a plan to renourish the local beaches next year has been tabled for at least another year.

Numbers in for Belleair Beach undergrounding By Beth Ludwig BELLEAIR BEACH - The numbers are in, kind of, and it’s time for Belleair Beach residents to ask themselves: how much do I really want underground utilities? Engineering firm Deuel and Associates was recently tasked with the job of preparing a preliminary estimate of the costs to underground the utilities in the Donato Drive/22nd Street neighborhood, where a majority of residents have been clammoring for undergrounding for years. The figures presented by Al Carrier of Deuel and Associates show that the cost to each home in the neighborhood would be at least $9,000, and probably significantly more, since Deuel’s figures only took into account Duke Energy’s cables and not the other two utilities in the area. According to Belleair Beach Mayor Leslie Notaro, the residents who have been requesting the undergrounding of

utilities in their neighborhood could actually move forward with a plan to get the job done on their own, if it came down to that, and they wouldn’t even have to do the whole neighborhood, if certain chunks of residents weren’t on board. For now, the city has decided to get more estimates on the complete job to underground all three utliites, but Notaro stressed that all affected residents need to be in agreement before anything can move forward.

hen it comes to purchasing a new home, or building a new home, on the barrier islands of Pinellas County, there are many factors to consider. Home building is becoming a popular option for many families, not only because of the ability to choose your design, but also because purchasing a brand new home means you don't have to worry about repairs, remodeling, or many of the other issues that come with purchasing an older home. First and hard-hitting, I'd like to bring to your attention that Congress can order a rate increase on flood insurnace due to the fact that the National Flood Insurance Program, or NFIP, which is managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is $24 billion in debt. Some homeowners are seeing insurance rates rise as high as 21 percent. You can shop the private market and get private insurance; however, if the private company drops you, you may be required to pay a higher price if your only option is to get government-backed insurance.
