2022 Gratitude A YEAR OF
As 2022 comes to a close, we want to reflect on the incredible milestones we have reached, thanks to the support and generosity of donors like you.
This year has been full of firsts for Scarborough Health Network (SHN) and SHN Foundation. In January, we launched the Love, Scarborough campaign – our first public marketing campaign – and saw incredibly positive feedback. We announced two of the largest donations in our history – $20 million from the Northpine Foundation and $50 million from Orlando Corporation. We finally broke ground on the brand new Northpine Diagnostic Imaging Department and confirmed over $1 billion in funding from the Government of Ontario to redevelop our Birchmount Hospital.
And, thanks to your generosity, we raised our first $100 million. Your support of our most urgent priorities will enable us to expand our ambitions to provide the best care in the best facilities for Scarborough.
It’s clear that good things are happening for Scarborough. And this is just the beginning.
As President and CEO of SHN Foundation and Chair of SHN Foundation’s Board of Directors, we are proud to support our hospitals and serve our vibrant community. We continue to be inspired by you, our donors, and our community members, staff, and physicians.
Thank you for joining us on this momentous journey and helping us reach new heights we previously thought impossible. Here is just a small snapshot of the things we accomplished this year.

12 DONORS FROM THE CHINESE COMMUNITY DEMONSTRATING THE COLLECTIVE POWER OF Philanthropy
This year, the Chinese community came together in a big way to raise over $1 million for SHN. Some of these donors are part of the Light Foundation, a group of philanthropists who support the healthcare needs of their community. They aim to bring light and hope to those who suffer, and on top of donating financially, they also helped by donating over 67,000 masks to SHN during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
12 members of our Chinese community and the Light Foundation were inspired by the Love, Scarborough campaign and wanted to join our fight against healthcare inequities. Scarborough is a landing pad for a large number of new Canadians from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China, and as a result, we see higher incidences of kidney disease in our community. Those of Asian descent are ten times more likely to develop kidney disease, and our Chinese donors wanted to help change this statistic.
They chose to support the creation of the new Bridletowne Neighbourhood Centre, which will change how diabetes and kidney care is delivered at SHN and in the community – and eventually serve as a new model of care across the province. Bridletowne will not only offer kidney care and dialysis treatment but will be a
a place for education to learn about preventing kidney disease, including cooking classes and exercise facilities to adopt new healthy lifestyles. Located in the heart of Scarborough, this new community hub will enhance population health and build a brighter, healthier future for Scarborough.
It is thanks to our donors, like members of the Light Foundation, that we are getting closer to making Bridletowne a reality. Although some of these donors no longer live in Scarborough, they believe in giving back to the community that welcomed them as new Canadians all those years ago.

50Million
TO SHN – THE LARGEST IN OUR HISTORY
In June 2022, we were thrilled to announce a luminary gift of $50 million from the Orlando Corporation. This incredible gift will usher in a new era of equitable care for Scarborough, supporting our Birchmount Hospital, removing barriers to mental health care, and other urgent priorities.
This gift is the largest in our history, and will help redevelop our Birchmount Hospital to put it at the forefront of equitable, leadingedge patient care. Birchmount will house the Orlando Corporation Emergency Department and be part of Canada’s first no-wait emergency department across SHN. The donation will also help establish the Orlando Corporation Mental Health Centre of Excellence.
Orlando is so committed to supporting SHN and inspiring others to give, that they are matching donations – dollar-for-dollar –from our community in support of SHN’s greatest needs.
One donor, Ka Ng, was so moved by Orlando’s generosity that he donated an incredible $5,000. A former patient at SHN who received life-saving treatment, Mr. Ng felt compelled to give back to the hospital that had done so much for him. And, with Orlando Corporation’s match, his gift will go twice as far to support our Scarborough hospitals.

Mr. Ng suffered a heart attack in the fall. He was brought to Emergency at Birchmount Hospital before being transferred to Centenary for surgery to remove a blockage in his artery. He spent time in the Intensive Care Unit and the Coronary Care Unit. “I am still recovering but grateful to be at home,” he says. “It is a nice feeling to give back, knowing that I am helping others who need care at Scarborough Health Network.”

Benefits
THE OF GIVING THROUGH GIFTS OF SECURITIES
Kam Shah, a long-time donor to SHN Foundation since 2017, knows that giving to his Scarborough hospitals helps the community he, his wife, and his parents call home. As a retired Certified Professional Accountant (CPA), he also knows there are unique benefits when giving gifts of securities.
“As a CPA, I was aware of the benefits I get when donating stocks rather than cash,” says Kam. “Not only are the capital gains on stock not taxable if gifted to a charity, but you also get the stock’s fair market value as the donation value, which you can claim on your tax return.”
However, tax benefits aren’t the reason he donates. Kam and his wife Rajul give to SHN because they believe in giving where they live. Kam’s parents and his wife have relied on SHN’s three hospitals over the years and want to ensure their community hospitals can continue caring for Scarborough long into the future.
THE BIG 5 BANKS
FOR SCARBOROUGH
Big STEP UP
It’s not every day you see all five of Canada’s leading banks come together in support of a cause. However, we were humbled to receive $10 million in total from BMO, CIBC, RBC, Scotiabank, and TD to collectively impact healthcare in Scarborough.
Their gifts of $2 million each will support our diverse community and different priority areas across our three hospitals. BMO is supporting the new and innovative Bridletowne Neighbourhood Centre to expand kidney disease treatment, prevention, and education; CIBC is making possible a new Breast Clinic with an expanded diagnostic imaging department; RBC is helping break down barriers to mental health care by supporting youth mental well-being; Scotiabank is helping families during emergencies by supporting the new rapid access zone in the Centenary Emergency Department; TD is helping expand dialysis care for our vulnerable kidney disease patients at our General Hospital.
Bold, determined, and dedicated to making positive change, we are honoured to recognize them alongside one another because they know that together we are stronger than individually. Something we in Scarborough know well.

DBS
SUPPORTING Strong Women AND HEALTHY COMMUNITIES
DBS Developments’ first gift of $665,000 to SHN will support a new Digital Mammography System in the new Northpine Diagnostic Imaging Department at our General Hospital. “It’s a very meaningful gift for us because it ties back to my father’s legacy and our company’s mission,” says Gloria Salomon, President of DBS Developments.
“My father immigrated to Canada and raised our family here. He saw the importance of creating safe and comfortable places to live for individuals and families,” she says. “This donation supports the people of this community because it will improve access to screenings, making their lives easier.”
Gloria says her father would be proud to see this legacy of supporting women and the community. “He had four strong women in his life who he respected for their skills and as the backbone of the family,” she says. “It is wonderful to make this pledge to continue DBS Developments’ work in building and supporting healthier communities.”
