SINCE ITS INCEPTION, Scarborough Health Network (SHN) Foundation has worked with generous donors, volunteers and community members to raise valuable funds for Scarborough’s hospitals.

These funds help build state-of-the-art infrastructure and purchase the latest medical technology, supporting Scarborough Health Network’s vision to be Canada’s leading community teaching health network.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERS To our generous donors, supporters and advocates; On behalf of the team at Scarborough Health Network (SHN) Foundation and every physician, nurse, volunteer, and frontline worker at our Birchmount, Centenary and General hospitals, thank you for your support.

As a donor to SHN, you play a vital role in our ability to deliver exceptional care to Scarborough’s patients and families. Despite the immense challenges that all of us have faced throughout 2020 and 2021, our community and the people who call it home continued to step up and stand alongside our hospitals.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, SHN has tackled the secondhighest number of COVID-19 cases in Ontario. In response, our community opened their hearts like never before, giving donations, personal protective equipment and even meals to support the courageous frontline heroes as they worked tirelessly to care for our patients. They also worked to increase access to testing for those who needed it most and continue to fight for equitable access and distribution of vaccines.

Even beyond COVID-19, generous donors continued to support our hospitals’ highest priority needs. Whether in priority areas such as our emergency departments, our nephrology program and our mental health initiatives, or providing future support through a legacy gift, or even donations to recognize a staff member or remember a loved one, this immense generosity has inspired us for the many possibilities that lay ahead.

But it is the people and stories behind this support that matter most.

LAST YEAR, THANKS TO DONOR SUPPORT, SCARBOROUGH HEALTH NETWORK FOUNDATION MADE GRANTS TO SHN TO ACHIEVE THE FOLLOWING: •

Purchase of the SPY Fluorescence imaging machine (pictured to the left) to perform innovative and life-changing procedures for patients suffering from lymphedema.

Launch a joint research project with the University Health Network (UHN) to support improvement in care delivery for nephrology patients.

•

Support Year 2 of the innovative LINK program – a mental health program for youth ages 16 – 24 bridge the gap to transition from youth mental health services into adulthood.

SCARBOROUGH COMMUNITY RALLIES IN SUPPORT OF OUR HOSPITALS DURING COVID-19 In a year underscored by the COVID-19 pandemic, no one shone as brightly as our courageous frontline health care workers. Scarborough was an epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario, with our hospitals tackling the second-highest number of cases in the province during the first three waves of the virus.

During a time filled with fear, our incredible Scarborough community channelled their uncertainty into action and gave back with ferocious generosity to support our physicians, nurses and health care teams – and each other.

THE SCARBOROUGH MUSLIM COMMUNITY REACHES THEIR $250,000 FUNDRAISING GOAL – AND COMMITS ANOTHER $100,000 The Scarborough Muslim Community once again stepped up in support of SHN Foundation with the announcement of an inspiring $100,000 pledge in early 2021. Fresh off the heels of fulfilling their previous five-year commitment of $250,000 – which was raised in only two and a half years – the group once again came forward to help SHN’s Birchmount, Centenary and General hospitals.

RECORD-BREAKING SING TAO A1 CHINESE RADIOTHON IN SUPPORT OF SHN FOUNDATION SURPASSES $500,000 MILESTONE On April 23, 2020, SHN Foundation’s annual Sing Tao A1 Chinese Radiothon saw donations pour in during an incredible 11-hour period. Thanks to this outpouring of support from more than 2,300 donors, the Radiothon raised a record-breaking $470,000 for the COVID-19 Emergency Fund at our SHN hospitals.

“

The initial amount was topped up thanks to a late gift of $30,000 by Ms. Katherine Li, a retired medical worker from Toronto General Hospital. This additional support enabled our Radiothon to surpass the $500,000 milestone.

I’ve been doing this for the past 25 years, and I have never before seen this amount of money raised in a single day,” said Anson Wong, host of Yellow Cow College at Sing Tao A1 Chinese Radio, and who helped lead the afternoon show for the Radiothon. “We appreciate this amazing experience and thank the SHN Foundation team for the pleasure of working together to raise this exceptional amount for such an important cause.”

THE 1ST VIRTUAL SIP, SHOP & CELEBRATE WOMEN: GIRLS NIGHT “IN” EDITION RAISES OVER $60,000 Members of the Scarborough community came together on Tuesday, November 5, 2020 for the seventh-annual Sip, Shop and Celebrate Women event in support of Scarborough Health Network. Held virtually live on Zoom due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was dubbed the “Girls Night In” edition.

Despite the unique challenges, over 200 guests joined in for this year’s event, raising $60,000 towards SHN’s areas of greatest need.

Organized by SHN Foundation and the Scarborough Women of Philanthropy Council (SWOP), the annual fundraiser is the SWOP Council’s signature event for Scarborough women.

Hosted by television personality Liz West, guests had the opportunity to network from a distance and participate in exciting live demos from popular local vendors, all while bidding on a wide selection of silent auction items. This year, guests heard from surprise guest speakers such as Mayor John Tory and Premier Doug Ford, who left messages to the attendees thanking them for their support of Scarborough’s hospitals.

It’s amazing to see the community’s unwavering commitment to our cause, even in these difficult circumstances, and we are inspired by the generous group of volunteers who led this event to its eventual success. GRATEFUL PATIENT FRIEDRICH KLEIN LEAVES $1.8 MILLION ESTATE TO SHN FOUNDATION Legacy gifts are important in future planning for SHN Foundation. By making a charitable gift through a Will, our donors are creating a lasting statement about who they are and what is important to them. This lasting legacy will ensure that SHN will always deliver the best of care to the community today, tomorrow and in the many decades to come. Grateful patient Friedrich Klein knew this to be true, and wanted the compassionate care he received at our hospitals to continue. Friedrich was a longstanding supporter of SHN, and to date has left $1.8 million in his estate to support our Scarborough hospitals – the largest in our history.

Friedrich received exceptional and compassionate care from our health care teams in medicine and palliative care. Dr. Nicholas Hartmann stayed by Friedrich’s side during his final days – listening, talking and helping to fulfill his final wishes. It was his gratitude for the world-class care he received from SHN’s doctors, nurses and other team members, that led him to leave the entirety of his estate to our hospitals.

A kind and gentle soul, Friedrich’s gift has left a lasting impression on all of us at SHN Foundation and has become the largest bequest in our history. We are incredibly grateful to Friedrich Klein and would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to him for his legacy and commitment to health care in Scarborough.

Gifts like Friedrich’s truly demonstrate the passion and love our community has for their local hospitals, and how much they value the work our frontline health care workers do each and every day.

THE SLAIGHT FAMILY FOUNDATION STEPS UP IN SUPPORT OF MENTAL HEALTH IN SCARBOROUGH As part of a Canada-wide $30-million Mental Health Initiative, the Slaight Family Foundation pledged $1-million to Scarborough Health Network (SHN) to support the future of community-based mental health care in Scarborough.

The donation will support SHN in creating a new Community Mental Health Hub, in a centralized location in Scarborough that will combine all of SHN’s adult outpatient mental health services into one safe and accessible site. The health network’s new purpose-designed Hub will centralize all adult mental health outpatient services in a central location serving young adults from ages 18 to 24, adults and seniors, and will offer programs and resources to manage and treat mental health challenges.

Specifically, this gift will create The Slaight Family Foundation Cultural Psychiatry Clinic within the Hub, providing accessible and culturally-safe mental health care for our vibrant and diverse population. The first-of-its-kind in Ontario, the clinic will offer treatment by expert psychiatrists in over five languages who will treat a variety of mental health challenges.

One of the biggest barriers facing individuals with mental health and addiction needs is timely access to the right evidence-based treatment to help them recover quickly.

The Community Mental Health Hub will have a ‘One Door Team’ who will receive all referrals for mental health and addictions services at SHN — whether through a primary care provider, emergency department or inpatient unit. Patients being referred will not have to wait for a full psychiatric assessment to get the service they need. The idea is that no one is left behind, and we promote quick and accessible treatment for the Scarborough community.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR SHN FOUNDATION IMPROVE OUR FACILITIES Together, we will launch our $100-million fundraising campaign to close the gap between exceptional health care and aging facilities at SHN. We will transform kidney care with new dialysis units and the Bridletowne Neighbourhood Centre; reimagine medical imaging with the new Medical Imaging and Vascular Centre; expand emergency care at our Birchmount and Centenary hospitals; evolve mental health by breaking ground on the new Community Mental Health Hub; and innovate our cardiac care program.

CREATE INTEGRATED COMMUNITIES OF CARE With the support of our community, SHN will build a brighter, healthier Scarborough.

Through community-based initiatives we will expand our reach into the community and help change the health tangent of Scarborough. The Community Mental Health Hub will break down barriers and reduce stigma for those seeking mental health treatment. The Bridletowne Neighbourhood Centre will change the way diabetes and chronic kidney disease are treated, managed and prevented across the province. Together, we’ll build a healthier tomorrow.

BECOME A NEW LEADER IN RESEARCH In 2021 SHN will launch a new research institute to drive meaningful research in a unique community health care setting. The institute will bring cutting-edge research opportunities and top health science minds to SHN’s doorstep, which will help deliver on our promise of transforming the patient experience. We will become a leader in priority areas such as population health and health equity, and the institute will have tangible impact on longterm health outcomes, focusing on reducing rates of chronic disease and closing gaps related to social determinants of health.

PLAN FOR THE FUTURE While we work hard to anticipate our community’s health care needs, some things can be unpredictable. As we’ve undoubtedly learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is crucial for your Scarborough hospitals to be prepared for anything that may come our way. That’s why your unrestricted gifts are vital to support renovations and facility upgrades, purchase urgently-needed equipment and ensure our talented health care teams have the tools and equipment they need to care for our community into the future.
