the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) Our hearts go out to all who have been affected by the outbreak, and you are all in our thoughts now more than ever.

The work that we do at Asthma and Allergy Foundation to support people living with asthma and allergies to live healthier, fuller lives is extremely important to us Given the recent measures introduced by the UK/Scottish Government to slow the spread of the COVID-19 and consideration for the vulnerability of our service users, we have taken the difficult decision to postpone all our face-to-face workshops, trainings and events until further notice Those who have booked to attend workshops or asthma awareness sessions and may be affected by this decision have been contacted directly.

To protect the health and wellbeing of our team and help with containment, our staff are now working remotely. However, I would like to reassure you that we remain committed to delivering our essential services and we will continue to provide support and advice on how to protect yourself, others and stay healthy during this period via telephone and emails. We will also continue to share resources and updates on our website and social channels over the coming days and weeks

If you have any questions or concerns, please call us on 01224 973001 or email info@asthmaandallergy.org.uk and our dedicated team members will be happy to help.

I will keep you updated with any further information and hope that Asthma and Allergy Foundation can continue to support you and your families during these difficult times

We are all in this together

Best wishes,

Love is in the air

Love is in the air

Air pollution is a major public health challenge for Scotland and the United Kingdom (UK). Exposure to air pollution can lead to a wide range of health issues including heart and respiratory conditions such as asthma, and every year in the UK, tens of thousands of deaths are attributed to long-term exposure to air pollution.

Asthma and Allergy Foundation is an Aberdeen based charity providing evidencebased health information, confidential advice, and support to people with asthma, their families, and carers, helping them understand asthma, it triggers and how to live well with the condition.

As a chronic lung condition, asthma affects about 368,000 people including 72,000 children in Scotland. Air pollution is a common asthma trigger which can cause or worsen symptoms such as breathlessness, wheezing, chest tightness and coughing,

and when symptoms become severe, this can lead to potentially life-threatening asthma attack.

Asthma and Allergy Foundation launched its annual “Love is in the Air” campaign in 2020, to promote discussions on the impact of air pollution on our health and environment, and what must be done by the government, organisations, communities, and individuals to clean up our air in Scotland. This year, and through the month of February and March, the Charity is back with this Campaign to continue discussions on improving air quality for all.

Commenting on its 2021 “Love is in the Air” campaign, Dami Jaiyesimi, Health Promotion Manager, said “There is ever increasing evidence about the damage air pollution causes on the quality of life of people with asthma, and other respiratory conditions, which impact hugely on their families In December 2020, air pollution was recognised as a cause of a person ’ s death for the first time in the UK – when it was found that air pollution made a material contribution to the death of nine-yearold Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah. Ella had acute asthma and had been exposed to excessive levels of pollution for a sustained period before she sadly died in 2013.

Air pollution is a major environmental health issue and improving our air quality is everyone ’ s responsibility. Many times, when people talk about reducing air pollution, it is often in relation to government policies and interventions. While action from public bodies which make decisions about polluting activities such as traffic and roads, is critical, private organisations as well as individuals need to evaluate their activities which also contribute to air pollution.”

Martina Chukwuma-Ezike, the Charity’s Chief Executive Officer, added “We all know that air pollution – outdoors and indoors – has a negative impact on our health. The push for cleaner air in our communities is an ongoing discussion and as a community health organisation, Asthma and Allergy Foundation will keep on raising awareness on how individuals can protect themselves from the health impacts of air pollution and will continue to press for greater action on air pollution, urging both Scottish and UK Government to position pollution control at the heart of policy making”.

Throughout February – the month of “love”, the charity will be sharing educative information and resources across different media platforms on how we can all work together to make a difference.

COVID vaccine

Asthma Sufferers Left at Risk Due to Priority Vaccine Omission

Asthma and Allergy Foundation is calling on the government to prioritise all asthmatics for the COVID-19 vaccine scheme. As lockdown restrictions ease, many people with lung disease are now left unprotected from the dangerous respiratory virus.

Previously, all those with asthma who were eligible for the flu jab were thought to be included in the COVID-19 priority scheme in either Category 4 or 6. The JCVI omitted mild and moderate asthma sufferers from their vaccine priority roll-out and

have yet to provide irrefutable evidence that this decision will not put asthma sufferers at greater risk, when compared to their healthy peers.

Martina Chukwuma-Ezike, Asthma and Allergy Foundation’s Chief Executive, said: “Asthma is a variable condition, meaning someone with mild symptoms can have an asthma attack that could be potentially life threatening How then do you quantify ‘ severe’? We are requesting that everyone with asthma be prioritised to receive the vaccine.”

Recent studies have linked asthma with debilitating long-COVID, an increased need for hospitalisation and critical care (compared to the rest of the population) What is more, should an asthmatic survive COVID-19, it is likely that their lungs will suffer potentially permanent damage, leading to continued use of stronger medications and reduced quality of life

Early studies surrounding asthma and COVID-19 did not take into account selfshielding, skewing the results and leading to inaccurate data, which we believe informed JCVI’s choice to de-prioritise mild and moderate asthmatics.

Our Chief Executive, Chukwuma-Ezike continued: “The word ‘ severe ’ is relative as asthma often moves along a continuum: mild, moderate and severe. A mild asthmatic can easily become severe when they come in contact with a trigger or daily preventer inhaler not working as it should. These instances are common. Lifethreatening asthma attacks happen on a daily basis across the UK Adding COVID19 to the mix is highly unlikely to lead to a wholly positive outcome.”

Numerous US States have added asthma to the vaccine eligibility list, reported the Boston Herald, due to the added risk COVID-19 poses to those with lung disease. Countries such as Finland are following suit, without the arbitrary ‘three oral steroid courses ’ rule that the UK has enforced.

The UK government specified that only those with a previous hospital admission or who have taken three courses of oral steroids are eligible for vaccine priority Group 4 or Group 6 However, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the NHS both state that asthma is a risk factor for serious illness with COVID-19.

Calls to Asthma and Allergy Foundation rose by 400% after this priority vaccine change. Mhairi Gowans, who suffers from asthma, told Asthma and Allergy Foundation, “As asthma was listed as a clinically vulnerable condition by the NHS, I was shocked and angry to find that we had been quietly off-boarded just at the very moment vaccination was announced for Group 6. Asthma increases your risk of hospitalisation, intubation and was also found to be the only condition that coaligned with long-COVID. The science makes it clear that we are clinically vulnerable and thus we should be included in Group 6.” Mhairi explained that her breathing issues could have included a hospital stay, had she not known more

about her condition and the help offered by the NHS for asthmatics “My official asthma record may look much more mild and controlled than it actually is.” How, then, does any asthmatic know their COVID-19 risk?

Angela Stapleford, another asthmatic, told Asthma and Allergy Foundation: “The JCVI and the government seem to have split people with asthma into two groups: those with severe asthma and those with well-controlled asthma. I am not sure exactly where my asthma fits in on the scale between mild and severe. I don’t meet the government’s interpretation of severe asthma for vaccination priority, but my asthma is not always well-controlled.”

Angela said that consultants have referred to her asthma as “moderate-to-severe” and she has tried numerous preventer inhalers. “Since I have heard that most people with asthma have been excluded from the priority groups for vaccination, I’ve felt anxious and stressed. At times I have become very wheezy and been short of breath. I am still very fearful of catching COVID. I work from home, but my husband is a college teacher, and my son is a secondary school pupil. So, while COVID cases are still out there, they will both be spending time in public places as education returns to normal ”

The JCVI’s vaccine priority omission has caused intense anxiety and stress for asthmatics. Callers with lung disease have warned Asthma and Allergy Foundation that they will stop taking their preventer inhalers, in order to trigger an attack that would make them eligible for priority vaccination Statements to the charity have included:

“Being classed as at risk is very simple, I will just come off my preventer inhaler for a week and I will have an asthma attack that will put me in hospital.”

“All I have to do is spray strong perfume or play with the family dog and I will be in A&E within two hours with an asthma attack.”

Asthma and Allergy Foundation is asking those with asthma to not be reckless with their health or take drastic measures There is already a greater risk to asthmatics as lockdown eases. Asthma sufferers refusing to take their preventer inhalers could lead to a public health crisis and the NHS being overwhelmed. What is more, uncontrolled asthma poses a greater risk for complications arising from COVID-19

As the only dedicated Scottish asthma charity, Asthma and Allergy Foundation has stepped up to educate, inform and advocate for asthmatics. Our team and consultants understand or have lung disease themselves and are uniquely placed to support and empower asthmatics

“We urge the government to change their priority criteria and protect all those with asthma,”. “Emerging studies on lung disease and COVID-19 point to a worrying trend; asthma sufferers – whether mild, moderate or severe – are at greater risk of death or worsening illness due to the coronavirus. “Lives will be lost if the government fails to act now.”

As the UK heads into easing lockdown restrictions, Asthma and Allergy Foundation is urging the Department of Health to review recent studies linking asthma to longCOVID and hospitalisation. After all, asthma is a lung disease and COVID-19 is a respiratory illness. It is time for the UK government to act responsibly and show due care to all those with underlying health conditions.

“We at Asthma and Allergy Foundation hear you and we will fight for you, ” said Chukwuma-Ezike to the asthma community affected by JCVI’s decision. “You are not facing this pandemic alone.”

message of thanks to our sponsors and supporters

As we look forward with hope to what the future holds, we want to take a moment to reflect on the past twelve months and what it has meant for Asthma and Allergy Foundation.

2020 tested and tried us all in ways we could not have imagined. And while most of the world was experiencing a global pandemic, our sponsors and supporters looked beyond their own needs and focused on helping people with asthma who were faced with a two-edged sword, covid being a respiratory disease and asthma being a respiratory condition.

When it came to adapting our services to provide practical support to people with asthma who were in desperate need, there was no wavering from you, only action. Through your generosity, many lives were touched, and hope restored in humanity.

To our interim Chief Executive, George Adam, we understand that leading during a pandemic is one of the hardest things a leader will ever face, yet you took the reins during the hight of the pandemic and provided leadership, direction and working with staff to raise vital funds to support people with asthma in challenging times.

To our trustees, staff, and volunteers, you understood that the advances we have made in helping people with asthma manage their symptoms and keep their asthma well controlled these past 11 years could be lost if they were exposed to covid that could make their asthma worse. So, you helped shopped for basic essentials, packaged, and delivered to hundreds of people with asthma who were shielding so that they would no longer have to leave the safety of their homes to go into shops.

Dami Jaiyesimi, our Health Promotion Manager and her team provided practical support on the phone, via emails and social media to thousands of people with asthma and provided reassurance.

In reflecting on what we have accomplished together this past year, our hearts are full of gratitude. Because you understood the challenges people with asthma face and chose generosity in the midst of everything you have personally faced this past difficult year, we are thankful, knowing that this work will continue strong this 2021 and beyond, providing opportunity for thousands of men, women, and children with asthma across Scotland to continue to receive practical support that would enable them live healthier and active lives -just like everyone else.

Emergency Appeal for Asthma Nurses

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation is appealing to businesses and individuals for donations to aid our emergency appeal for asthma nurses

Since the start of the pandemic, demand for our services has skyrocketed, and we desperately need to raise funds for trained asthma nurses to manage our advice lines, through which we provide vital support to people with asthma across Scotland

Martina Chukwuma-Ezike, Chief Executive of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, said: “Over the past year, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation has experienced a 400% surge in the demand for our services beyond Scotland and extending across the whole of the UK. To cope with this increased demand, our small team has been working relentlessly (remotely) to provide consistent and reliable support through our adviceline, answering emails and social media inquiries and providing up-todate advice on our websites, but we need asthma nurses to deal with the high volumes of enquiries from people with asthma, their families, and carers. ”

Every 10 seconds someone has a potentially life-threatening asthma attack, and three people die every day from an asthma attack in the United Kingdom Tragically the majority of these could be prevented – 90% of asthma deaths are preventable.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation is a Scottish charity that provides evidencebased health information, confidential advice, and support to about 368,000 people living with asthma, their families, carers, and friends across Scotland.

Businesses and individuals can support the campaign via our fundraising appeal at https://www justgiving com/campaign/emergency-asthma-nurse-appeal

World Asthma day 2021

Asthma charity addresses common asthma myths and misconceptions

Asthma is a respiratory condition that affects the lungs which can cause symptoms of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing – making it difficult to breathe There are over 5 4 million people living with asthma in the United Kingdom, and about 368,000 people in Scotland.

World Asthma Day is an event held each May to improve awareness of asthma and care around the world. The theme for this year ’ s World Asthma Day is “Uncovering Asthma Misconceptions” to address common myths and misconceptions about asthma.

Asthma and Allergy Foundation, Scotland’s only dedicated asthma charity, provides free evidence-based health information, confidential advice, and support to people with asthma, their families, carers, and friends across Scotland. Commenting on the theme, Dami Jaiyesimi, Heath Promotion Manager said “Although asthma is a very common condition, there is still a lot of misinformation about it in our communities Asthma can be controlled; With proper education and treatment and people living with the condition can lead full, active lives – just like everyone else. On this World Asthma Day, we want to use this opportunity to address common widely held myths and misconceptions concerning asthma, that prevent people with asthma from living healthy and optimal lives”.

Asthma and Allergy Foundation shares the truth behind the most common misconceptions and myths about asthma.

1. “People with asthma should avoid physical activity and sports”. Exercise is beneficial for everyone and can even strengthen the lungs, helping improve asthma control. While exercise can be an asthma trigger, with proper management, people with asthma are able to participate in sports and other physical activities In fact, many people with asthma have gone on to become successful athletes and Olympians.

2 “Asthma is a childhood condition” Although asthma is very common in children, anyone can develop asthma at any age. Asthma is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

3. “Children can outgrow asthma”. some children’s asthma will disappear, some will go away temporarily and return years later, and other children never outgrow it.

4. “Asthma is all in the head or an anxiety disorder”. Asthma is a chronic, or long-term condition that inflames and narrows the airways of your lungs, and symptoms can be triggered by physical and emotional stress

5. “Asthma is the same for everyone”. Asthma can affect each person differently. One person may show several symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, and breathlessness, while someone else may only cough People with asthma also have different triggers

6. “Asthma is not serious”.

18/09/2024, 16:33

Asthma is a very serious condition – 3 people die every day from an asthma attack in the UK. Anyone with asthma, even those termed as “mild”, can experience a potentially life-threatening asthma attack when exposed to asthma triggers.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation is appealing to businesses and the public for donations to help them continue to deliver life-saving services to people with asthma in desperate need of support.

“I did not know my perfume was gradually killing my child”

This is the feedback from Lydia, whose daughter, Sophie, had been in and out of hospital with a series of life-threatening asthma attacks. Sophie was unable to live an active lifestyle dancing with her friends, which she had loved before her asthma had become so severe.

After attending one of our asthma workshops, Sophie’s asthma improved drastically, and she was able to go back to dancing and stay out of hospital. The “My Breath is My Life” project, which we have run since September 2018, has allowed us to reach many more children with asthma and save lives. However, our funding is now running out.

Businesses and individuals can support the campaign via their fundraising appeal at https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/sophies-story

Catharina de Vries, fundraising assistant for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, said:

“We desperately need your donations to continue helping people like Lydia and Sophie Donate today so that we can help more children live full, active lives doing the things they love. A small donation of just £10 can help change a child’s life for the better.”

Huge Assets and Funds Gift Will Permit

Practical Support to People With Asthma

Huge Assets and Funds Gift Will Permit Continued Practical Support to People With Asthma

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation is delighted to have received assets worth £255,138 with additional funds of £14,000 to continue to provide practical support to people with asthma across Scotland and also fund asthma research

Trustees, staff and volunteers at Asthma and Allergy Foundation announced that the charity has been gifted assets and cash sum by W Stuart Sutherland’s Trust. They say the total gift to the charity, which specialises in providing evidence-based health information, confidential advice, and practical support to people with asthma, their families, and carers, will make a deep impact on Asthma and Allergy Foundation’s goal to reach more families battling with poorly controlled asthma across Scotland

The generous act of philanthropy comes from W Stuart Sutherland’s Trust, which was set up for the furtherance of the treatment of and research into asthma and other chest related diseases and complaint within the Highland Region and elsewhere in Scotland and the United Kingdom

The trustees of W Stuart Sutherland’s Trust have taken the difficult decision to wind up the Trust and transfer its assets worth £255,138 with additional funds of £14,000 to Asthma and Allergy Foundation that has similar aims and objectives.

Trustees of Asthma and Allergy Foundation said the funds would be used to continue to provide vital support to people with asthma across Scotland and the charity would carry out a dedicated asthma management project benefitting people with asthma in the Highland Region to fulfil the wishes of the late W S Sutherland. They would be working with families, schools, the Highland Council, the NHS, and many other partners to deliver these outcomes.

Making the announcement, Martina Chukwuma-Ezike, CEO of Asthma and Allergy Foundation said, “It was a huge surprise when the initial letter came from the trustees of W S Sutherland trust, and she was delighted because the trustees saw a perfect fit between Asthma and Allergy Foundation and W Stuart Sutherland Trust”.

Martina also added that, “whilst very excited at the prospect, we took our time to carefully consider this remarkable gift, to ensure we would make the best use of it to provide practical support to people with asthma and improve health outcomes, before going through all the process of completing the necessary paperwork for the safe transfer of the assets and funds.

Denis Pinto, a trustee of the organisation said, As Trustees of Asthma and Allergy Foundation, we are delighted to have received the assets from W S Sutherland trusts This helps us significantly in ensuring our organisation can continue to provide support services to people with asthma especially children and young people across Scotland and their families.

Alpin Stewart, a trustee of W Stuart Sutherland Trust explained “the Trustees had over a number of years found it difficult to stimulate applications to the Trust within the Trust purposes. They were therefore pleased to find that the purposes of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation were more or less directly aligned with those set out in the late Mr Sutherland’s Will and the fact that the Foundation too operated in the north of Scotland made it the preferred charity when the Trustees took the decision to wind up the W Stuart Sutherland Trust”

Asthma and Allergy Foundation’s CEO said “We are elated that this has been made possible through the kind generosity of the late Mr W Stuart Sutherland and his family. This would give Asthma and Allergy Foundation the opportunity to reach many more people with asthma, transform the numbers the charity can work with in future, save lives and fund asthma research towards finding a cure for this lifethreatening condition”

National Lottery Award Success

National Lottery success will provide life-saving services to children and young people in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation has received a National Lottery award of £143,064 00 from the National Lottery Community Fund to enable the charity to deliver the project “Breathing Room – Helping Young People with Asthma Breathe Easy” to benefit children and young people with asthma in the Greater Glasgow & Clyde region.

Martina Chukwuma-Ezike, Chief Executive said “We are delighted to have received a grant of £143,064.00 from the National Lottery Community Fund. Lockdown highlighted how much young asthma sufferers need to be able to self-manage, and have a well-informed support network at home, school and in the community and just how much this is missing in Scotland. This funding means a lot to our charity because it will enable us to deliver a range of essential asthma workshops and management sessions over the next three years. This will help children and young people with asthma manage their symptoms better and improve their quality of life. When children and young people learn to manage their asthma, they will live longer, healthier, more active and symptom-free lives and not living lives compromised by their asthma”.

Asthma affects 72,000 children in Scotland; High proportions of children and young people struggle daily to cope with asthma We have found out over the years that asthma impacts not just the health of children and young people with the condition, but also their education, attendance, performance, and mental health. Children with persistent asthma are more likely than their peers to have several days of absence each school year, which puts them at risk of falling behind academically. They also suffer from bullying, social withdrawal and isolation Research also confirms that children with poorly controlled asthma are at higher risk of Covid hospital admissions.

The Breathing Room project will directly impact on the quality of life of children and young people with asthma by helping them learn to manage their symptoms better, improve health and academic excellence; And equip parents and carers with the necessary skills to support children and young people with asthma.

The National Lottery Community Fund, Scotland Chair, Kate Still said: “In these uncertain times our priority is to ensure that National Lottery money continues to flow to charities, voluntary sector organisations and grassroots groups. I would like to congratulate the Asthma and Allergy Foundation on their award, theirs is an important project and will support people now and in the future when they can physically come back together to make great things happen in their community.”

Denis Pinto, trustee of Asthma and Allergy Foundation said: “There have been so many avoidable asthma deaths amongst children and young people in Scotland that have devastated lives – The death of one child with asthma is one death to many! Our work at Asthma and Allergy Foundation over the past 11 years has proven to prevent asthma deaths, reduce hospital admissions, and improve quality of life for children, young people, and adults with asthma across Scotland We are very pleased to have received this National Lottery award from The National Lottery Community Fund, which was made possible thanks to National Lottery players”.

“There are about 1,000 deaths a year from asthma in the UK and around 90% of these deaths are preventable. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation, which opened offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh at the beginning of the year, is the only organisation of its kind in Scotland whose sole aim is to reduce this figure and by providing our services we want to ensure that everyone who turns to us for support gets the help they need so they or their loved ones can live a healthier life ”

University staff and students, along with representatives from the City and Aberdeenshire Councils, Incorporated Trades, alumni, and guests attended the ceremony in King’s College Chapel which included a performance from the University’s Chapel Choir.

After the ceremony Martina was carried by students along the High Street atop Angus the Bull, a decades-old tradition marking the installation of a new Rector.

She then took to the stage at Elphinstone Lawn to address students attending the University’s ‘Live on the Lawn’ event, which is being held to celebrate the University’s diverse student population.

Martina was voted in by students following an election in November and began her three-year tenure on 1 January and follows in the footsteps of other notable University of Aberdeen Rectors, including Winston Churchill

Martina said: “As a graduate of the University it is an honour to represent its students, and I look forward to working with AUSA and the student community to deliver on all the key issues raised in my manifesto, including mental health support, student safety and welfare, and employability skills.

Professor George Boyne, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University, said: “As a graduate, Martina has a long association with the University and with our students, many of whom have benefited from mentoring, volunteering, and work placement opportunities through her leadership of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation. “I am delighted that she has returned to the University as Rector, and on behalf of the academic community I am pleased to welcome her to this important role.”

Martina is a committed leader with a passion for making a difference in the lives of others and we are confident she would do great in her role as The Lord Rector of the University of Aberdeen

the gaps currently present in asthma care

Asthma is a respiratory condition that affects the lungs with around 368,000 people in Scotland living with the condition

World Asthma Day is held annually in the first week of May to increase awareness and improve the care needed around the world. This year ’ s theme is “Closing Gaps in Asthma Care” to raise awareness of preventable suffering experienced by those

affected, as well as limit the costs incurred by treating uncontrolled Asthma

Scotland’s Asthma and Allergy Foundation provides free evidence-based health information, confidential advice and support to those living with the condition as well as their families, carers and friends.

Rafsan Chowdhury, Health Promotion Manager commented: “Although Asthma is very common, there are still multiple gaps regarding care and management within our communities. With proper education, treatment and greater accessibility to annually updated Asthma-related scientific evidence, people living with the condition can lead full, active lives – just like everyone else On this years World Asthma Day, we want to use this opportunity to address some of the gaps associated with asthma care that prevent them from living healthy and optimal lives ”

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation shares some of the gaps in asthma care:

1. Disparities in access to diagnosis and treatment

2. Gaps in communication across primary, secondary and tertiary care

3. Prescription of inhalers vs ability to use these devices

4 General education of the public surrounding understanding of the Asthma

5. Application of scientific evidence within actual delivery of care

6. Quality of Asthma Care Plans

7 Knowledge of Asthma between Healthcare Professionals

is certainly a widely prevalent medical condition, with potentially severe and lifethreatening implications if not adequately controlled or managed.

Focussing on the pre-pubescent age group, boys are typically more likely to be diagnosed with Asthma than girls, and this trend majorly changes after puberty, where girls are twice as likely to develop asthma compared to boys This trend can most likely be attributed to the belief that male hormone testosterone can actually act as a protective factor against asthma, whereas the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone may potentially aggravate asthmatic symptoms, although this is not a scientific fact. The most recent research article carried out by Asthma and Lung UK has further highlighted that women both anecdotally and scientifically experience worse asthmatic symptoms than their male counterparts. Studies suggest that not only are women at greater risk of being admitted to hospital for asthma attacks, but also women with asthma over the age of 65 have a significantly higher risk of life-threatening asthma attacks.

In a recent interview on the matter, Martina Chukwuma-Ezike, discussed her experiences of living with Asthma, and reflected on a life-changing experience where she was pronounced clinically dead for ten minutes because of her asthma Figures have revealed that over the past five years across Scotland, 407 women died from an asthma attack compared to 177 men. Martina stated “We know that sex hormones are playing a role behind these figures, but we do not know what the exact role is. Understanding this can also allow us to better support women living with asthma and hopefully reduce the number of avoidable fatalities.”

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation, Scotland’s only dedicated Asthma Charity, provides free evidence-based health information, confidential advice, and support to people with Asthma, their families, carers, and friends across Scotland. Commenting on the topic, Rafsan Chowdhury, Health Promotion Manager, said “More needs to be done in order to raise awareness on the impact Asthma can have on Women. With more support and funding to carry out research studies on the effect of female hormones on lung function, we can hopefully avoid the “ one size fits all” approach to adult asthma care and better tailor the care to avoid preventable deaths.”

The impact of air pollution on respiratory health of those affected by Asthma

is certainly a widely prevalent medical condition, with potentially severe and lifethreatening implications if not adequately controlled or managed.

Air pollution is any chemical, physical, or biological factor that contaminates the indoor or outdoor environment and alters the natural properties of the atmosphere. Every year air pollution kills around 2,500 people in Scotland. Everybody’s asthma is distinct, although air pollution is an incredibly common trigger for potentially life-threatening acute asthma attacks. According to scientific studies, excessive exposure to air pollution can increase the likelihood of developing asthma, highlighting the significant impact that air pollution can have personally and cross-generationally

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation, Scotland’s only dedicated Asthma Charity, provides free evidence-based health information, confidential advice, and support to people with Asthma, their families, carers, and friends across Scotland. Commenting on the topic, Rafsan Chowdhury, Health Promotion Manager, said “More needs to be done in order to raise awareness on the impact air pollution can have on the daily lives of Asthmatics. With global warming on the rise, discussing this is becoming ever increasingly important, and due to this we are working on our “Love is in the Air” campaign from May to July, with the hope to grow public discussion on the matter and provide educational and informative public engagement events ”

Below are some top asthma tips in preparation for days with excess air pollution:

Maintain your preventer regimen to help you manage with pollution and other triggers

Carry your relief inhaler with you at all times so you can promptly address any symptoms.

Use DEFRA’s UK-wide predictions or a weather app to check the pollution forecast in your location.

Avoid high-pollution areas such as main roads, intersections, bus terminals, and parking lots as much as possible. If possible, get out before the pollution levels have a chance to rise.

If you ’ re experiencing symptoms three or more times a week, whether from pollution or something else, see your doctor.

Cost-of-living crisis will hit asthma sufferers hard

Cost-of-living crisis will hit asthma sufferers hard

ASTHMA sufferers in Scotland are facing catastrophic consequences in the coming months because of the cost-of-living crisis.

“I thought I had seen poverty in Africa, but what I have seen in Scotland has shocked me, ” said Martina Chukwuma-Ezike.

“We are facing a public health catastrophe for asthma sufferers in Scotland because of the rocketing poverty rates. In some school classrooms in our worst-hit areas, there are 50 per cent asthma rates among the children.

caused by cost-of-living will drive asthma rates skywards.

“And with 113 deaths in 2020, sadly I can only see this going in one direction unless the Scottish Government launches an urgent intervention.”

Mrs Chukwuma-Ezike said fuel poverty, bad housing, poor diet, stress and anxiety

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation – Scotland’s only dedicated asthma charity – is calling for the Government to provide additional support for asthma sufferers during the crisis. The charity says it could be a “death sentence” for those living with the disease.

The charity, which has offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow, is calling for greater education around the respiratory condition, priority support for families living with the life-threatening illness, and new research to be carried out in an attempt to defuse the health crisis it says is fast approaching.

Poverty is one of the main drivers of asthma, especially in children and young people. Children living in poverty are three times more likely to die from an asthma attack

Some 90% of asthma deaths are preventable, say experts But there’s still not enough education and people do not know how to respond when someone suffers an attack.

Mrs Chukwuma-Ezike, who is also the Lord Rector of Aberdeen University, added: “We need a national campaign led by the Scottish Government The public should know ‘what to do in an asthma attack’.

“Nobody should die from an asthma attack in this day and age but, sadly, three people in the UK die from this every day.

“We need an urgent conversation around the link between asthma and poverty in light of the current cost-of-living crisis.”

The charity boss has already had a meeting with Scottish Government Health Minister Maree Todd and found it “productive”.

She wrote to her again this week requesting another meeting specifically around the cost-of-living crisis

She added: “We are facing a public health timebomb because of the rates of people moving into poverty with every week that passes.

“Asthma attacks don’t happen without reason. They are triggered. And what we have learned is that poor diet, cold and badly ventilated housing, stress and anxiety all contribute This is why we are asking the Scottish Government to give special priority to asthma sufferers in terms of social and financial support. Education in this area is woefully lacking which is why we still have more than 100 deaths in Scotland every year. With more education, these could have been prevented.”

AAF has been visiting schools to find out how children are coping with the cost-ofliving crisis.

“The pandemic was particularly hard on asthma sufferers who had to shield during CV1,” she added. “As a result, many became unemployed, and these are the people we want to reach and support now

“One child dying from asthma in this country is one too many. All of these deaths are avoidable

“Every 20 minutes a young sufferer in Scotland is taken to Accident and Emergency with an attack. And a child living below the breadline is three times more likely to end up in hospital with this.

“For a child living in a cold house, with mould on the walls and in a stressful environment, where its parents have to make a decision whether to feed them or heat the house, is the brutal reality.”

The AAF has also been monitoring supermarket food prices in recent weeks and measuring the impact on families where asthma is a concern.

“Not only are gas and electricity prices a massive concern, but the significant rise in food prices is quite shocking. This is particularly noticeable around staple foods, like rice, pasta and vegetables And when parents don’t have the money to cook healthy meals then tend to opt for cheaper, unhealthier options. This leads to higher rates of obesity which, of course, causes asthma sufferers even greater problems

“Thousands of school days are lost every year because of asthma. And when children are at school, it is hard for them to focus because of symptoms and general unease. They also become more isolated because they cannot take part in certain physical activities Bullying is also a problem for kids with asthma

“The data in Scotland around all of these issues is sorely lacking. It may get to the point that we as a charity have to try and raise money to commission new research, but we feel it should be the Scottish Government and its ministers who are taking the lead on this ”

AIR POLLUTION MEANS PARTS OF CITY-CENTRE ARE A NO-GO ZONE FOR ASTHMA SUFFERERS

AIR POLLUTION MEANS PARTS OF CITY-CENTRE ARE A NOGO ZONE FOR ASTHMA SUFFERERS

AIR pollution is out of control again. If I were to walk from Aberdeen’s St Nicholas Centre to Union Square via Market Street, I would suffer an asthma attack later that night That’s a fact

Even though I live and work in the city, there are entire sections of it that I must avoid completely to keep myself safe.

Those microscopic particles of poison are invading every part of our bodies –even getting into our bloodstreams. So, we can acknowledge that deadly air pollution is one of the biggest public health problems facing us today But what can we do beyond pressing the Scottish Government to commit to bolder clean air targets and improve public awareness?

Air quality is down to unacceptable pre-pandemic level Union Street was recently named one of the dirtiest streets in the UK and data shows that as many as 3,500 die from toxic air in Scotland every year. Government statistics also estimate that air pollution reduces life expectancy by seven to eight months

There are thousands like me living in the North-east affected. Around 40 per cent of asthma sufferers are likely to endure acute episodes on days where pollution is particularly bad.

And by exposing our children to dirty air we are storing up major health problems for the future.

This is a shameful situation and, quite frankly, we could all be doing more, especially when you consider that most of these particles come from our cars

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation are in discussions with groups like Friends of the Earth Scotland, the country’s leading data scientists, and politicians who are passionate on this issue about forming a ‘Common Sense Council’ on air pollution

And tomorrow (Friday July 1, 2022) we are holding a conference at the University of Aberdeen to kick-start a fresh conversation around this issue.

Toxic air in Scotland is a killer and puts thousands of people at risk of developing life-threatening asthma attacks and flare ups.

We need to start taking this issue more seriously. Are we just going to keep going until Aberdeen and other Scottish cities resemble one of the post-apocalyptic Hollywood movies where everyone needs a mask to breathe? We want life expectancy to be going up, not down as it is in some Asian capitals.

This nightmarish vision doesn’t have to become reality But we need to start taking bold and creative steps before it is too late.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation is Scotland’s only dedicated asthma charity. Its ‘What’s In The Air?’ conference starts at 5pm tomorrow (Fri) at the Sir Duncan Rice Library, University of Aberdeen

COULD YOU SAVE MY LIFE?

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation, Scotland’s only dedicated asthma charity has set an ambitious goal of training 20,000 people across the country in the skills needed to save lives during the most severe attacks.

Last month, the charity chief executive Martina Chukwuma-Ezike – also Rector of Aberdeen University – said Scotland was facing a ‘public health catastrophe’ due to the condition. “We are facing a public health catastrophe for asthma sufferers in Scotland because of the rocketing poverty rates. In some school classrooms in our worst-hit areas, there are 50 per cent asthma rates among the children.”

The new campaign features a girl in the poster asking ‘could you save my life?’ which will be displayed throughout Scotland.

Charity bosses say that it is estimated around 90 per cent of asthma deaths are preventable – with around 113 people dying as a result of the condition in Scotland in 2020 alone

Few have the skills to help people in a life-threatening asthma attack – as CPR would be likely to make the situation worse or even kill the person Asthma and Allergy Foundation is now calling for more people to be educated in the skills needed – and aim to train some 20,000 people.

Every 10 seconds someone in the UK is having an asthma attack and every 20 minutes a child is admitted to hospital with life-threatening asthma attack Whether someone having an asthma attack lives or dies depends on the person standing next to them at the time and their ability to administer life-saving treatment

That is why we have set a target of training 20,000 people – teachers (pupils/classmates), work colleagues, healthcare professionals and parents/carers by the end of 2023. We would also continue to provide asthma management workshops so those living with the condition can learn to self-manage their symptoms and improve quality of life.

The first phase of our advertising campaign was launched in Aberdeen this wee The girl in the poster asks ‘Could You Save My Life?’. Wouldn’t it be incredible if all of us could become asthma advocates and answer ‘ yes ’ to that question?

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation is offering everyone the opportunity to potentially save a life.

The charity is seeking sponsorships to deliver life-saving workshops to teachers as part of its efforts to support school children with asthma. It costs around £300 to deliver a school session A donation of £1,200 would enable the charity to

18/09/2024, 16:33 Asthma &Allergy Foundation with you every breath of the way

deliver 4 sessions reaching potentially around 443 children, teachers, and parents.

EDINBURGH PROJECT LAUNCHES TO SUPPORT SUFFERERS

A NEW PROJECT HAS BEEN LAUNCHED IN EDINBURGH AND LOTHIAN TO SUPPORT SUFFERERS

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation has launched a new fundraising campaign to deliver a one-year project supporting youngsters living with the condition in Edinburgh and Lothian.

The Foundation supports thousands of families throughout Scotland every year.

But the plan to launch a new initiative in the Capital follows a £10,000 donation from the Hospital Saturday Fund. The charity also received start-up money from a family in the area who tragically lost their son to the respiratory condition.

AAF chief executive Martina Chukwuma-Ezike said: “We already support people living with asthma in the central belt but have recently been developing deeper ties with sufferers and their families in Edinburgh and Lothian. ”

“We first received a £5,000 donation from a couple who lost their 17-year-old son from an asthma attack. They asked if we could provide practical support to try and prevent another family going through what they have. It was heart-breaking.

“And to receive a further £10,000 from the HSF is another massive boost to our work in Edinburgh and Lothian. ‘My Breath Is My Life’project provides practical, hands-on support and advice for families of sufferers struggling to cope. We have already had great success in other parts of the country. ”

Martina, who is also rector of the University of Aberdeen, was talking a week after the charity revealed that 96 people in Scotland died from asthma last year. Worryingly, almost 70 per cent of cases were women.

Martina added: “There are so many different issues affecting the 400,000 people in Scotland living with asthma, whether poverty, poor housing, air pollution, lack of awareness and education, and just generally failing to get asthma under control.

“Scotland is failing on this front every single year. It is our mission to ensure that nobody dies needlessly from this condition. Every death from asthma represents a massive waste of human potential and we believe that with increased support for families, more education about what to do if someone suffers an asthma attack, and increased engagement with politicians and policy-makers, we can make a difference. ”

LAUNCH OF NEW POLICY PLAN

April 18, 2023

Categories: IN THE NEWS

Cirrus Building, 6 International Avenue, ABZ Business Park, Dyce, Aberdeen, AB21 0BH.

The boss of Scotland’s leading asthma charity has called on the Scottish Government to “wake up ” to the crisis facing thousands of asthma sufferers.

The policy paper can be accessed here.

Martina Chukwuma-Ezike issued the call as the Asthma and Allergy Foundation launched a policy report designed to help asthmatics whose symptoms, she says, are desperately out of control as only 14% of asthma sufferers in Scotland have controlled symptoms

The study, ‘Fighting for Air’, blames worsening air pollution, higher rates of poverty, underfunding in education and an increasingly overwhelmed health service for the worsening situation.

The document is the fruit of a process lasting several months drawing on the experience of patients, scientists, academics, and researchers.

Among the policies it promotes are an increase in the Scottish Child Payment for families coping with the respiratory condition, priority social housing, a commitment to face-to-face asthma reviews with GPs, live air pollution monitoring by local authorities and a nationwide roll-out of asthma training in schools, workplaces, and other organisations.

Talking at the launching of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation’s My Breath Is My Life Project in Edinburgh, Mrs Chukwuma-Ezike said: “Scotland’s has one of the worst problems with asthma in the whole of Europe and it is time for ministers to wake up to the crisis hundreds of thousands face, particularly children living in straightened conditions.

“There is a kind of ambivalence towards the condition and services are woefully under-funded. Every life lost to asthma represents a huge waste of human potential and communities and families torn apart

“There are some very important questions which need to be answered. Of the 96 people who died from asthma in Scotland in 2021, why were almost 70 per cent of them women? Professor Tim Hinks of Oxford University is doing great research into this but what can we do here in Scotland to support him? The other huge issue is the cost-of-living crisis. Why are those families struggling with asthma not getting the extra support they need, whether financial or otherwise? The statistics are terrifying

“Of the 72,200 children in Scotland with asthma, one is admitted to hospital every 20 minutes with an attack If you are living in poverty, you are three times more likely to be one of these children.”

She added: “In an age where health services face a multitude of problems, we feel asthma is ignored by those with the power to help. We have launched this policy paper in the hope that we will get it into the hands of decision-makers who have the will and ability to introduce meaningful change for a constituency of people who are, quite frankly, lost at sea without any hope in sight.”

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation carries out education workshops all over Scotland, supporting sufferers to learn to manage symptoms effectively, make the most of their medicines and teaching people what to do if someone suffers an asthma attack.

The charity’s chief executive added: “Whether someone lives or dies depends on the person standing next to them. We know that as many as 70 per cent asthma deaths are preventable.

“This figure represents dozens of people who have died needlessly from asthma in Scotland This is something of a national shame and today we are seeking a commitment from ministers and other political leaders to meet with us to discuss policies which are born out of strategic insights, living examples and first-person testimony on what we can do as a society to improve the lives of the most vulnerable among us. ”

The policy paper also calls for an expansion to the Winter Fuel Payment to those with asthma, an increase in research and development funding for new asthma medication, and support for Low Emission Zones in towns and cities with high levels of air pollution.

The charity is also supporting ‘Lauren’s Law’ – a drive by the mother of Lauren Reid, who tragically passed away in 2020 at the age of 19 after forgetting her inhaler Elaine Cunningham from Glasgow wants new legislation which forces all workplaces to carry emergency inhalers.

Inaugural National Fragrance-Free Day Launch on the 13th of June 2023

What may seem like a simple act of spraying perfume to start the day can have life-threatening consequences for individuals with asthma.

On 13th June 2023, Asthma and Allergy Foundation is launching its inaugural National Fragrance-Free Day to raise awareness of the impact of strong smells (fragrance) on people with asthma; Remind families, friends, and colleagues that before heading out for that meeting, when they think perfume, they should have asthmatics in mind; as well as highlight that perfume in a confined space has the potential to trigger an asthma attack, so people will be made aware as not everyone know this.

Martina Chukwuma-Ezike, CEO of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, said “In 2008, I was almost sent to an early grave in my mid 20s due to an asthma attack which was triggered by a colleague’s perfume. I died that day. I am incredibly lucky to still be here to this day and I will spend the rest of my days doing all in my power to help people with asthma- a condition that is often overlooked yet very life limiting and life threatening”

Working directly with asthma sufferers, their families, researchers, and healthcare professionals these past 14 years, we know that many people with asthma, just like Martina react badly to strong smells, perfume being the commonest.

We have launched National Fragrance-Free Day to help raise awareness of the many things that can trigger asthma, including perfume and raise vital funds to continue to provide evidence-based health information, confidential advice, and support to people with asthma, their families, and carers.

We invite everyone to participate in the #FragranceFreeChallenge, showcasing their commitment to support respiratory health by sharing their selfies on social media

Abstain from Perfumes and Aftershaves for One DayNational Fragrance Free Day on June 13th

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation is asking the public to abstain from perfumes and aftershaves for one day to stand in solidarity with sufferers of respiratory conditions and bring greater awareness to their plight

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation says perfumes and other fragranced products are one of the biggest triggers for asthma attacks.<

And it is declaring Tuesday (June 13) ‘National Fragrance-Free Day’ to bring the public health issue to public consciousness and raise funds for educational workshops to support Scotland’s hundreds of thousands of asthmatics.

AAF Chief Executive Martina Chukwuma-Ezike explained: “Along with cigarette and vape smoke and air pollution, perfume is one of the leading causes of asthma attacks. “When people with asthma inhale perfume they can experience a range of symptoms related to their respiratory system. The chemicals contained within these products can irritate the airways, causing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and, ultimately, an asthma attack.

“As a charity, we are trying to create a society in Scotland which is sensitive to the needs of asthma sufferers and to raise greater awareness around asthma and the impact of strong smells (perfumes), we are asking people to abstain from wearing fragrances on the on June 13 to show support for asthma sufferers across the UK.

Martina herself suffers from an extreme form of asthma and has personal experience of being physically triggered by fragrances. t h

“This, we hope, will lead to people thinking twice before they put on aftershave and perfume in the future out of consideration for colleagues, friends, and family with asthma. “We have heard some horrendous stories of serious and lifethreatening asthma attacks caused by strong perfume and it is for this reason we are seeking a sea-change in the national mindset ”

She added: “We decided to make the Asthma and Allergy Foundation offices ‘fragrance free’ a long time ago. The staff know that my asthma is potentially lifethreatening and that perfumes are a massive trigger. In an attempt to do everything, we can to support people with asthma, we want to try and act as an example and see this replicated throughout other work places.

“We are also inviting those who are kind enough to take part to donate £2 towards asthma education so we can continue our work supporting Scotland’s 368,000 asthmatics.”

Martina said the charity, which has offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, is seeking to make ‘National Fragrance-Free Day’ an annual event.

Perfumes often contain chemicals that can irritate the airways, causing an asthma attack This response is usually part of the body’s defense mechanisms against potentially harmful substances. When these irritants enter the respiratory system, they can trigger a response that narrows the airways.

And some chemicals in perfumes can act as sensitizers, substances that may not initially cause an allergic reaction but can trigger one after repeated exposures. After enough exposure, an individual may develop a sensitivity to this substance and subsequently have an asthma attack when exposed.

Research also shows that many perfumes contain VOCs, which are gases emitted from certain solids or liquids, including many types of fragrances. These compounds can contribute to indoor air pollution and may exacerbate asthma symptoms.

The charity advice that to reduce the risk of asthma symptoms or an asthma attack, people with asthma or who are sensitive to perfumes consider the following:

– Using unscented or fragrance-free products

– Using natural products, but with caution, as these can still cause asthma symptoms

– Avoiding areas where perfumes are heavily used

– Keeping windows open or using fans to circulate air when possible.

– Communicating with people in your environment about your sensitivity to perfume

But Martina said: “It’s important for each individual to know their own asthma triggers and how to manage them Consulting with a healthcare professional can provide personalised advice and treatment options. It is vital we empower our service users with the correct and proper knowledge, and we always try and

explain they have a part to play as self-management is key in helping people with asthma live well with their condition. But we want the public to also become more aware and willing to support those living with lung conditions.”

In the last ten years, 1,162 people have died in Scotland from asthma.

Thousands of preventable asthma deaths

May 1, 2024

Categories: IN THE NEWS

Cirrus Building, 6 International Avenue, ABZ Business Park, Dyce, Aberdeen, AB21 0BH.

New figures reveal that 10 years on from the NRAD report, we still have thousands of preventable asthma deaths across the UK

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation (AAF) said they continue to see alarming rates of asthma deaths, with over 12,000 adults and children whose lives have been snatched by the cold hands of asthma attack the past 10 years, leaving families torn apart by grief and our society deprived of the meaningful impact these lives could have contributed.

10 years on from the National Review of Asthma Death Report, it is disheartening that very little has changed from the 2014 report which stated that two thirds of the asthma deaths could have been prevented with improved asthma care.

There are about 5 4 million people living with asthma in the UK, 368, 000 in Scotland and about 35,000 in the Grampian region, a life-limiting and lifethreatening lung condition which causes breathing difficulties and accounts for the second main cause of emergency hospital admissions in Scotland, with a child being admitted to hospital with an asthma attack every 20 minutes.

The leading asthma charity, which focuses on the place of patient education in the management of asthma and provides evidence-based health information, confidential advice and practical support to adults and children with asthma, their families and carers said there is an ever-increasing demand for their asthma workshops as asthma patients are finding it difficult to access the care they need and deserve

People with asthma should be supported to manage their condition but many asthma sufferers said they have been failed by the very people who should prioritise their healthcare needs as majority of asthma sufferers feel they are not receiving the care they need as healthcare providers are over-stretched This is putting many asthma sufferers at high risk as every asthma sufferer should be given adequate information to help them self-manage of their condition, recognise worsening asthma symptoms and to seek timely help Each asthma sufferer should also have a personalised Asthma Action Plan, attend annual review, ensure they are shown proper inhaler technique.

Martina Chukwuma-Ezike, CEO of Asthma and Allergy Foundation said: “the above figures clearly show that we cannot continue to ignore the problem Each of these deaths represent a massive waste of human potential and families and communities ripped apart. At least half of these deaths could have been prevented with the right care, proper information, advise and support”

Elaine Cunningham, mother of Lauren Reid, a 19-year-old chef from Glasgow who died of an asthma attack at work in February 2020, said “I don’t want any other parent to feel the way I do, the Government should do more ” .

“Today we are calling on the UK and Scottish Government to do much more to prevent avoidable asthma deaths, people with asthma not just want to live, they want to thrive, and we can help, we have a suite of solutions to help address the problem. The death of one person with asthma is one too many, let us not wait another 10 years ”

Landmark Anti-Smoking Legislation is Welcomed

Anti-Smoking Legislation is Welcomed

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation, Scotland’s only dedicated asthma charity has commended Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for announcing new antismoking legislation as part of the King’s Speech on 17th July 2024. This transformative law will make it illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone born after 1st January 2009. It will also impose stricter regulations on youth vaping, including restrictions on flavours and packaging.

This legislation will have a particularly beneficial impact on individuals living with asthma and allergies Cigarette smoke and vape fumes are major triggers for asthma attacks, which can be debilitating and even life-threatening. Poorly controlled asthma often leads to issues like fatigue, absenteeism from work and school, stress, anxiety, depression, and delays in growth or puberty in children

By banning the sale of tobacco products to future generations, we hope to see a significant decline in smoking rates This will greatly improve the health of these individuals and reduce the strain on our healthcare system. In 2023, 13% of UK adults, or 6.4 million people, reported being cigarette smokers according to the Office for National Statistics Smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death in the UK, contributing to one hospital admission every minute due to smoking-related illnesses, at an annual cost of £2.6 billion to the NHS.

Professor Steve Turner, President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, who is also an Independent Clinical Advisor at the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, has praised this legislation saying, “This is a major milestone towards realising the government’s ambition to raise the healthiest generation of children in our history. As we look to the future, we are optimistic that this new law will make a substantial difference in the lives of those living with asthma, allergies and other respiratory conditions”

Martina Chukwuma-Ezike, Chief Executive of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation also expressed her optimism for the future, “The introduction of this ban is expected to lead to a significant decrease in smoking rates among future generations. This will not only improve public health but also alleviate the immense pressure on our health services. The benefits for those living with asthma and allergies cannot be overstated, as fewer asthma attacks, reduced hospital admissions and a general improvement in respiratory health are anticipated.”

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation is committed to supporting the implementation of this vital legislation and continuing to advocate for measures that enhance respiratory health. The charity is optimistic that this law will significantly contribute to reducing smoking rates, leading to fewer asthma attacks, reduction in hospital admissions and better overall health outcomes for people with asthma and allergies.
