As ever, thanks go to all those who have submitted content and supported the development of this publication. Seaton Scene is your magazine and has the potential to be a real voice in your community. This cannot happen without your input. We need people of all ages to get involved with the editorial team. This may involve attending one-hour meetings, sourcing content for the magazine, photography, submitting articles, creative writing, design and layout or any aspect of the editorial you feel comfortable with - All training can be provided by SHMU. Montenegro Update

Back in March, Betty Mansfield went back to Berane, in Montenegro, with the second King’s Church mission, to provide aid to the Roma People.

They originally fled persecution in their own countries, but have been denied official refugee status in Montenegro, and therefore much needed aid. As a result, they have been living in squalid conditions, in makeshift refugee camps consisting of wooden shacks and metal containers.

In the first mission last November, Betty and the team provided aid by providing sanitation facilities, food, clothes and tools, etcetera. They also noticed that some of the metal containers were leaking and there was another camp not far from the first, so they decided to fix the containers and visit the other camp on the second mission.

They fixed leaking containers and built a bedroom for a couple, who had brought their niece from another camp, as their mother was too ill to look after her. They went

to visit the nearby camp, which was populated mostly by older people.

They also gave food and clothes to both camps, having collected twentyfive suitcases of clothes.

As before, Betty and the other female members of the mission gave ‘pamper’ sessions to the girls and ladies (nail and hair care), and the team had a doctor and a pharmacist, which provided medical care and supplies (including a wheelchair), mostly to the second camp with the older people. Back at the first camp, a local man who owned a barn there provided the use of a third of its space, which was turned into a small church.

“In the sewing class, at the School Road Hut, I made bags which were filled with various types of supplies which, we bought when we got there. We also found two more camps near Berane, which we intend to visit in future missions. Our next one will be sometime in October or November this year - I hope to be there.”

Christine Reflects on her Time at Seaton After twenty-nine years of working in Community Learning, Christine McLean has decided to accept the Council Voluntary Severance Scheme and will be leaving her post as Community Learning Health Worker at Seaton Community Project in August due to the changes in the Service. Christine felt it was an appropriate time for a new challenge.

Christine has spent the last eleven years working in the area; three years as a Community Worker at Linksfield before moving to the Seaton Project and has “loved every minute of it”. The Committee are currently working hard as they need to be ready to take on responsibility for the activities running at the project sites by March 2012. More recently members of the Committee have taken part in Community leader training.

Congratulations to Kelly Clark who has just completed her SVQ in Children Learning & Development, Level 2. Kelly has been employed at Seaton Community Project Crèche since 2007 and when asked if she was pleased to receive the award, commented that she was “ecstatic that she had completed her Level Two”. Kelly is another great example of what an individual can achieve with support from Community Learning at the Seaton Community Project.

Dynamic Youth Awards: Music Group Pupils from Seaton Primary School have been attending the Dynamic Youth Awards (DYA) and Music Group at Seaton Community Project.

The Music Group provides young people the opportunity to learn how to record and compose music. The group were able to record different noises which were then mixed together to make a music track. They were also given the opportunity to record songs they had written.

Members of the group have also been working towards their DYA. Nick, Kevin and Irene have been supporting the group to achieve their awards, where the young people are required to learn a new skill, record their attendance and what they have learned.

Part of the requirement of the award is that the young people also have to assess each others participation in the award. The DYA is an accredited award for young people in Scotland.

Seaton Community Project Crèche runs most mornings and two afternoons each week. Monday and Thursdays are for children under three who are not attending nursery school. The crèche provide a safe, secure environment where the children can learn and have fun. The aim of the crèche is to provide child care for parents and carers who want to attend classes or groups at the Project, have special appointments outwith the Project and as a drop-in Seaton Community Project crèche for parents in Seaton. Bookings are made at the Project office on Mondays from 9am. Please telephone the Project office on 01224 277930 for more information, or pop into the Project for a chat with the crèche staff and to collect a registration form. Over the summer holidays the crèche will run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 10am to 12 noon starting on the 18th July.

Due to council cuts, a few project and youth workers from Seaton Community Project are facing involuntary redundancy and redeployment. Among those who are expected to be moving on is a dear member of our editorial group, Arthur Gill. Arthur’s departure will prove a devastating loss to both the editorial team and the community cen-

tre. Arthur and the other project workers have made an invaluable contribution to the lives of many ‘Seatoners.’

Seaton Community Project held a Fun Day for the local community on Saturday 6th June. It was a great success due to all the hard work put in by the local volunteers and the Management Committee working alongside the project staff.

The volunteers not only helped on the day but also put in a lot of effort and dedication into planning the event; from writing to local businesses to donate prizes for the raffle, organising the car boot sale, advertising the event all over Seaton and asking other

partners who work in the area to come along to give taster sessions.

At this fun day we had Zumba, Cheer-leading and Medieval Battle re enactments all of which were thoroughly enjoyed by all ages who came along. Over 260 local people came along and saw what the project had to offer.

Encounters of the 'Big Fit' kind One fine sunny morning in early March, Murdo and I decided to go for a short walk out towards the Bridge of Don. While going over the bridge at the Don we kept glancing to our left as there was something on the island. It was a rough circle of what we thought looked like dried grass or straw. We thought this was ver y strange.

Next day, we went golfing. When my turn came, I said to Steve, “I'll get a hole in one” but guess what?

I hit the golf ball, plonk, right into the bunker. Oh well.

When I went to get the golf ball it was nestled in some kind of strange foot print, I looked closer... could it be a bird’s foot print? It was huge, in fact, ginormous. Could this be connected to that nest thing we'd seen on the island at the Bridge of Don....? Could they be linked?

We star ted to hear rumours of

other strange things happening around Seaton. Like splashes of what looked like bird poo on bus shelters, buildings and even on Seaton Primary School and in the playground. Some creatures have no respect.

Then on Saturday we saw lots of people milling about wearing camouflage jackets with binoculars and cameras slung round their necks. And there was a blue mini bus with “Seaton Bird Watchers” in white letters on the side, surrounded by film crews from Sky Television. We began to get more and more curious, We got really excited and rushed back to the bridge to find out what was happening. There were crowds of local folk looking down at the island through their binoculars, taking photos and filming what looked to be a very large nest.

as it would have to be a giant of a creature to build such a massive structure. Inside the nest were two eggs. The biggest eggs we had ever, ever seen in our lives.

Several weeks later we heard rumours of people finding large pieces of green tinged eggshell in the area, sadly not by us, Well, it's now June and we have not heard of any actual sightings of any strange large bird or beast or flying creature. We certainly saw neither hide nor hair nor scale nor feather in our close encounter with ‘BIG FIT’.

seatonscene: School Updates

Moving On Up! The Primary 7’s from Seaton School are moving up to academy after the summer. Their teacher Emma Noble went on maternity leave recently and Iain Campbell temporarily covered her to support the P7’s. According to him, the kids were nervous about all the changes but they worked together and visited their new schools to help alleviate their fears.

The P7’s have been working on their digital ‘Year Book’, which includes baby and recent photos of each pupil, as well as photos of teachers.

It was funny when Mr. Campbell and Ms. Noble pretended to be the students, and the pupils were the teachers. They asked lots of questions and their behaviour was terrible.

The academy is so big I might get lost but I will have my friends and two cousins there.

The move to academy is one of great change. The P7’s of Seaton have had to deal with many changes this academic year, including a new building, a new head teacher and a new P7 teacher. Amazingly the children seemed completely unphased despite these disruptions. In fact, they are an extremely happy, focused and eager class. It is thanks to their teachers’ guidance and support that they coped so well. The P7’s of Seaton School are a very resilient lot, and this will stand them in good stead when moving up to academy.

seatonscene: Public Announcements Council Cuts

The Effects of Council Budget Cuts on Our Community Projects On February 10th this year, Aberdeen City Council decided to reduce the budget for the Integrated Communities team by £2.4 million over the next two years. As a result, the Education, Culture and Sport Committee, which is responsible for running the Integrated Communities programme, produced a report on March 24th. The report recommended that the committee “reduce the existing staffing resource by approximately 67%.” This reduction means that the funding “to deliver front line adult learning and youth development activities through tutors and sessional staff will be reduced by approximately 83%.” The report also recommended that “all community centres move to a lease type model managed by community organisations as appropriate to that facility.”

However, in addition to the obvious problems of finding the extra volunteers and the unrealistic timescale involved, the report itself contains a fairly long list of expected problems brought up by a meeting of community representatives.

Most significant are concerns about the amount of pressure put on staff and volunteers and, as yet, the leased centre system does not cover volunteers to legal liability.

Moreover, volunteers are a lot more interested in helping people than having to deal with the great administrative burden that will be put on them if these ’plans’ go ahead.

Last, but certainly not least, is the prospect of losing the School Road Hut (expected to go March 2012) and running the successful Rehab and Recovery project at a reduced level. Fairer Scotland Fund The Fairer Scotland Fund is no longer ring-fenced by the Scottish Government, but Aberdeen City Council has decided to continue the Fund, and has allocated £1.625m for this year.

The Council held a Community Summit in January to discuss the future of the Fairer Scotland Fund. This was attended by 80 people representing disadvantaged communities and vulnerable individuals, as well as a number of local elected members. One of the outcomes from the summit was that the FSF Board will be reviewing the overall programme, thematic and neighbourhood, over the coming year.

The Fairer Scotland Fund Board, which includes a majority of community reps from the regeneration areas, has allocated funding to a variety of Projects. Some of the funding awarded is subject to a 6 month review, and a subgroup of the Board has been formed to take this forward.

Smoke Free Homes and Cars Project NHS Grampian in Partnership with Grampian Fire & Rescue Service and Aberdeen City Council has developed a pilot project to encourage parents to protect their families from second-hand smoke by making a commitment to one of the following promises: • Step One: Make your home and car completely smoke free at all times, so that your children (and any adults) will be healthier.

• Step Two: If step one is too difficult, restrict smoking to one well ventilated room or area and never smoke in front of your children in the home. Although your family will still be affected by second-hand smoke, it will hopefully be less harmful and discourage your children from becoming smokers when they are adults.

What is second-hand smoke? The smoke blown out when someone is smoking a cigarette and the smoke from the end of a burning cigarette is known as Secondhand Smoke. The fine particles from smoke linger, spread to other rooms and stick to every surface and everyone.

Smoke from a cigarette contains over 4000 chemicals most of which are dangerous, some causing cancer. These chemicals don’t need to be inhaled directly from the cigarette to cause harm so not only cause problems to smokers but also to those around them.

Why is it dangerous for my Children? Because children breathe faster, their lungs and immune systems are still developing, their little hands touch everything they are much more vulnerable to the effects of second-hand smoke.

Seaton Taking Action for Regeneration (S.T.A.R.)

Flat Coordinator Calls it a Day! Anne Puchowicz will be retiring from her post of Coordinator at the Star Flat this summer. She has spent the last 2½ years as their Coordinator and has loved every minute of it. Anne said “she is sorry to be leaving, but feels that the time is right to retire and take it easy”.

At the Star Flat, Anne would organise activities in the premises for the local community, but everyday something new would crop up.

Before Anne took on the Coordinator role at the Star Flat, she was Adult Learning Coordinator with Seaton Community Project and has fond memories of a trip to Tobermory with a young mums group and their children. In total Anne has spent 9 years working in the Seaton area and said “it was a total pleasure in teaching all the different groups”.

Anne will continue to Tutor at the Star Flat for their leisure and crafts group, so we will still be seeing Anne around the Star Flat.

Silver City Surfers Silver City Surfers run FREE computing sessions at the STAR flat, Seaton Drive every Monday from 11am until 1pm.

Friendly, helpful tutors are on hand to help the over 55’s with basic computing. People can bring their own laptops to get advice and 1:1 tuition or use the computers at the flat. Tea and coffee provided free at each session.

S.T.A.R. had its Annual General Meeting in June and our Management Committee have been reinstated again for another year. Acky Stewart (Chairman), Sheila Strachan M.B.E. (Treasurer), and Chrissi Wood (Secretary) have been a constant source of activity within S.T.A.R. for many years now and hopefully will be for many more.

The programme in the S.T.A.R. Flat continues to run as usual with the only change being that the Citizens Advice Bureau now works from the Community Project.

The craft and cooking groups Are still busy with all the different crafts and tasty delights that are on offer.

The Chill Out Room has sessions still available for booking; so please drop-in or telephone us to come and relax from the stresses of live for a while.

The Citizens Advice Bureau has now moved to the Community Project, but all the other agencies using the S.T.A.R. Flat are still available e.g.

Pathways, Credit Union and Councillor Collie are still available at the same times during the week. The Silver City Surfers Computer Group are still very active and the drop-in on a Monday is a hive of activity.

With the changes that are happing in the near future in Seaton, with the availability of community facilities changing or closing, now is the time to USE IT OR LOSE IT. The S.T.A.R. Flat is open from 10.00am – 2.00 pm and you are welcome to drop in and see the availability of information and activities available.

Linksfield 50 Metre Aquatics Swimming Pool I am very pleased to report that progress has now been made on the new 50 metre, 10 lane, Aquatics Swimming Pool and an additional 25 metre pool with diving facilities included, which is to be located on the old Linksfield Community Centre site off of Regent Walk. Demolition of the Community Centre is due to commence on the 25 July with the new Swimming Pool scheduled to be completed by September 2013, with an opening date in January 2014.

The contractors, Graham Construction, are very experienced on the construction of swimming pools and were responsible for building the Royal Commonwealth Swimming Pool in Edinburgh and also the Olympic sized swimming pool in Sheffield.

Aberdeen Sports Village will be responsible for the takeover of the lease of the land and progressing the business case for the Aquatics pool.

I am really looking forward to the opening of this fantastic high quality facility which will not only be enjoyed by the elite swimming athletes, but also by the general public.

Aberdeen International Youth Festival Puts Call Out to Young performers from Seaton

One of the world’s biggest celebrations of youth arts and culture has announced an even bigger programme of events for this year’s festival.

Now in its 39th year, the dates for this year’s festival are Wednesday July 27 until Saturday August 6 with some performances free of charge and family discount tickets also available.

These stages are set aside for amateur talent such as musicians, drama groups or dancers that would like to perform during the ‘Festival in the City’ programme.

The festival brings together the very best in young International talent and combines it with up and coming home-grown Scottish stars to provide a unique experience that highlights the best musicians, dancers and theatre performers in the world today.

A full programme of the shows available at this year’s festival can be found on the website www.aiyf.org and includes a variety of performances such as the ever popular ‘Family series’

However, Aberdeen International Youth Festival (AIYF) is also putting out a call to local youth groups, community groups and young performers from the Seaton area who would like to take part in the one day ‘Festival in the City’ which takes place on Saturday July 30th from 1pm onwards.

These shows can be anything from energetic dance performances from Russian dance troupes to theatre productions of firm family favourites such as The Three Musketeers. Many of the family series shows are held at easily accessible city centre venues such as the Beach Ballroom, Aberdeen Arts Centre or The Lemontree.

Celebrate Aberdeen On Saturday the 11th June, the SeatonScene editorial team helped lead the SHMU volunteers down Union Street as part of the ‘Celebrate Aberdeen’ parade. The parade was organised by ACVO to recognise all the hard work carried out by the voluntary sector in Aberdeen.

The SHMU contingent was made up of volunteers including Radio Presenters, Editorial Team Members, The Youth Radio Project (YRP), shmuTRAINees as well as shmu staff.

PTVIII starts on the 26th September shmuWORKS is a fantastic opportunity for 18-25 year olds who are not in education, employment or training to take part in a 6 week training programme.

shmuFM shmuFM offers training and support to volunteers so they can produce and present a variety of issue-based, music and community programming shows on 99.8fm.

The next series of beginner courses begin on the following dates: 5th September from 7pm to 9pm 9th September from 2pm to 4pm
