I ABSOLUTELY LOVE PESACH. I think I say it every year, but it’s such a powerful time that fosters incredible family connections and memories that surpass generations. Pesach is themed around the Seder, a ceremony of sorts, that tells the story of the Jews’ miraculous escape from slavery in Egypt to their redemption and journey to Israel. The gathering of family and friends around a table, reflecting their shared history, is absolutely beautiful. As a parent of four children, I embrace the Seder as an incredible opportunity to pass love, knowledge and Jewish pride for generations to come. In my husband's family, for example, they sing Vehi She’amda (the verse in the Haggadah that mentions God's promise of ending the exile of the Jews — see more below) in four different tunes, each one an ode to a different grandparent who had their own unique way of singing this powerful verse. While I have never met some of these relatives, I sometimes find myself humming the more unusual takes on the classic tune while thinking of that specific Zaideh. (I am actually doing it right now as I write this and, funnily enough, called my husband to suggest creating a fun remix of the song for the family.) Pesach has the power to create niche references and stories that every family develops over time. If you are new to these traditions, then you are currently developing your own unique tunes, customs and family recipes that will be enjoyed for years to come.
THE PESACH ISSUE
One highlight of the Seder is Shulchan Aruch, the Seder feast. Food centers all people, excites them and creates memories that foster even greater connection. This issue will hopefully be a core part of your current and upcoming Seder feasts. It encompasses a blend of cherished traditional dishes, innovative reinterpretations and fresh, contemporary ideas. Among the traditional offerings are Kayla Kaye’s beloved homemade gefilte fish recipe passed down from her husband’s grandmother; Ruhama Shitrit’s authentic Iraqi charoset; and Naomi Nachman’s cherished collection of desserts, many of which developed over decades from her parents who ran a Pesach program in Sydney, Australia.

Beyond the traditional, I take pleasure in introducing some new flavors into the mix. I grew up with, and still maintain, a very traditional Chabad-style Pesach menu, where minimal ingredients are used. I have actually found so much inspiration among the “restrictions” and love pushing myself to create recipes with the bare minimum. Beyond the recipes in this year’s Pesach issue, there are loads of recipes from prior Pesach issues available on the Fleishigs app. This year we are definitely going to make the versatile mango dressing, beet gravlax and crockpot yapchik from prior Pesach issues.
