Educator’s Angle Last week I took my son Yanky to the optometrist and he told us that Yanky does not use both eyes together easily. He has 20/20 vision and does not need glasses so why is his vision a concern, and what can we do about it?

It is good that your optometrist is alerting you to this concern. Eye teaming or binocular vision refers to vision using both eyes. Our brain takes information from both eyes and creates a single 3D image; this is vision. As a child develops he learns to control the muscles of the eyes to converge on the same spot. This allows the brain to efficiently process the information it is receiving. If the eyes are not working as a good team the brain must work harder to do its job. If the brain finds the effort too great it may choose to ignore the information from one eye, alternate between the eyes or simply use two images- double vision (this can look like a word with a shadow). If the mind is being taxed with decoding visual information this can take away from its ability to think and understand. While this may not affect all visual activities, complex tasks such as reading are more difficult. It is important to remember that not every challenge is a problem for each person and not every person is affected in the same way.

A partial symptoms checklist would be headaches from reading,

burning or watery eyes, tires easily from reading, turns head while reading or covers one eye (often the hand is used to block the word from one of the eyes). Losing the place easily and repeating words or letters are also symptoms to look out for. When reading ‫ לשון הקדש‬the Talmid may have difficulty discerning the ‫ ֶא‬/‫ ָא‬or the ֵ‫א‬/‫ ַא‬. They may regularly add a Dagesh to letters which should not have one or close the '‫ ה‬and say '‫ ח‬. When I mention some of these symptoms to parents often they will tell me that they have some of these difficulties. Just because it does not affect you does not mean that this is not the source of your son’s difficulty.

Some doctors will prescribe prism glasses to ease the visual process.

Another method used is referred to as Vision Therapy. This trains the muscles of the eyes to properly converge easing the strain of reading.

Information regarding these methods is readily available and should be researched before signing up. Many Menahalim and Kriah experts are familiar with the pros and cons of different methods and should be consulted. As with all specialties you should get references and go to a qualified professional. After vision therapy a Talmid will often need development of their reading skills which can proceed quickly when the obstacles are no longer there.
