Educator’s I recently upgraded my ‫לשון הקודש‬ reading skills and have become quite proficient at ‫קריאה‬. My next goal is to learn to read Rashi script. How great of a challenge will Rashi script present?

For a seasoned ‫ לשון הקדש‬reader, learning Rashi script can be surprisingly easy.

Most of the Rashi script letters correlate either to the printed form or the script used for writing.

The human mind is capable of easily adapting to

Rashi script is simply a new font comparable to the challenge of reading an ornate invitation or an advertisement written in an unusual font. Speed and accuracy images and symbols which are similar.

will improve as the Rashi characters become more familiar. There are a few Rashi letters such as ‫ א&צ‬which are dissimilar from both the print and written ‫אותיות‬, as well as other letters such as ‫ס‬/‫נ ם‬/‫ח ג‬/‫ א‬which can be confused.

The following steps can be used to improve familiarity with Rashi script.

Angle along with their corresponding letters written in standard form.  Choose a Rashi on a familiar Sugya, or Parsha.  Sound out each word in the Rashi from beginning to end.  Repeat reading the same Rashi until a level of fluency is achieved.

The greatest challenge will be the uncertainty of knowing if a word is being read correctly. By beginning to read Rashi on a familiar topic it will be easier to judge if the words correspond to the subject matter. Engage a Chavrusah to listen and offer feedback. Once a level of comfort has been reached, the following tool can be effective to improve reading efficiency. Read the familiar texts of ‫ ברכת המזון‬or ‫ תפילה‬printed in Rashi script.

While there will inevitably be words that are difficult, there will be many more words which are easily recognized. With a bit of perseverance you will soon be enjoying the world of Rashi and Tosfos.

 Get a chart to be used as a reference guide which lists the Rashi alphabet The following interesting “Brain Study” highlights our point.
