Educator’s Angle My son has always had difficulty with reading. We tried Kriah tutors for a number of years and that certainly helped but his reading is still below par. Recently we took him to an expert who told us that he will never read properly. My brother has dyslexia and I am wondering if it is genetic to have dyslexia. Mrs. G. Dear Mrs. G.  To be told that there is no possibility of reading properly is a
very harsh projection. Unless there is clear damage to the eye or areas responsible for reading there is usually some program or idea which can help your son develop an efficient reading. Unfortunately many experts are willing to give up to early. I have personally worked with a large number of students who were told they will never read and we saw a lot of Hatzlocho. Some were able to reach optimal fluency and accuracy which helped bring their learning and davening to higher levels. When you get a reading evaluation ask for a report which makes note of what the problem is. Armed with this information you can find an expert in that field who can do a
proper remediation for this challenge. Sometimes this remediation alone will enough but usually the reading skill must also be properly developed. At this point working on reading will not be so difficult or time consuming because the problem has been removed. Often a number of difficulties in learning or behavior are interrelated and you may notice a general easing of the school experience. Even if you cannot resolve the issue now, armed with the proper information you can keep an open ear for someone who has developed a technique to remediate this difficulty. Resolving the issue now may easily prevent years of tutoring and frustration which will be more costly in the long term. Even if other family members have been diagnosed with dyslexia or other learning disabilities you should not despair. I have actually had family members suggest to their relative to come for an evaluation to see if they have the same issue which can be remedied. You may actually be able to help your brother with your newfound knowledge.
