Educator’s Angle Last week my son brought home his ‫ גמרא‬test with a mark well below what he should be getting. I know this because I did the ‫חזרה‬ with him and he knew the ‫ גמרא‬and Tosfos. He was able to repeat all the questions and ‫ שיטות‬in the Tosfos and Rashi, and he knew the ‫ שקלא וטריא‬of the ‫גמרא‬. Before buying into his argument that “My answers were really correct and Rebbi wasn’t fair” I decided to look over his test. What I saw was very surprising. Either he filled in two word answers or he left blank spaces next to material we had gone over. He has a good memory so why can’t he remember the answers to basic ‫ גמרא‬questions?

D.L. Dear Reb D. What you are describing here is very common for a Bochur who is getting used to learning ‫ גמרא‬or ‫משניות‬. When learning a ‫שקלא וטריא‬ it is not enough to let him parrot the ‫ קשיא‬or ‫תירוץ‬, he must show that he understands how the ‫ קשיא‬is a problem on the previous statement and how the ‫ תירוץ‬resolves this problem. The same is true in regards to learning a Tosfos. He must effectively connect all the steps involved. The Talmid may appear to know what the ‫ גמרא‬is saying but in truth he has simply just memorized our words and is repeating them. The same can be true in learning a simple Mishna.

The Talmid may know the topic (e.g. Succah) and he knows that Bais Hillel holds ‫ כשר‬and Bais Shamai holds ‫ פסול‬but he may not

understand the connection of what being ‫ פסול‬or ‫ כשר‬has to do with the Succah. On the test any question other than “What does B”H hold?” may not elicit the correct response, and the answer “Machlokes” to “What is the din etc.” does not tell the Rebbi that your son understands what he is talking about.

When I learn with Bochurim the first ‘rule’ I use is: No using pronouns. “Then he went there and gave it to them because” does not leave us with any useful information and the Talmid will not have clarity in his learning. Even if the who/what/where/when is “obvious” proper nouns must be used. This will help the Talmids be clear in his own thoughts and by listening to him explain a ‫ גמרא‬with clear precise wording a Rebbi or father can usually pick up on where he may have missed a step or come to an erroneous conclusion. Saying over the ‫ שקלא וטריא‬should not just sound like a dictation of the ‫ גמרא‬but a solid explanation of each step. When saying the ‫תירוץ‬, the ‫ קשיא‬must be referenced at some point to let us know how it is being answered. Another technique that helps to see the interconnection of the stages of the ‫ גמרא‬is the use of flowcharts. This is especially valuable for the visual learner and enables him to see the progression of the ‫גמרא‬.

June 6, 2010 Dear Neighbor, As in previous years, the Carriage Walk Homeowners’ Association reminds all non-members who wish to use our parks that there is a $30 annual fee. This fee helps Wash’ n sets usCuts cover the costs of insurance, landscaping, and maintenance.

The parks included are only the ones adjacent to 1 North Crest and 55 North Sales Crest. They are owned by the 72 houses which are paying members of the association.

The cost of upkeep in the parks for the association is a few thousand dollars per year, Clary and the members of the association grant non-members access to the parks Freeda only if they pay their fair share in the financial burden.
