Educator’s Angle A Talmid in my sixth grade ‫ גמרא‬class has difficulty with Kriah and can not read the words of ‫ גמרא‬fluently. Will a ‫ גמרא‬with ‫ נקודות‬be easier for him?

Reading is most efficient when the least effort is expended in order to decode the written information. When a text is written with ‫ נקודות‬the reader must decode additional information, and there is increased strain of the visual system which must scan each line on three levels: letter level, above the letter for ‫ניקוד‬, below the letter for ‫ניקוד‬. Even very simple sentences can be annoying to read when you go over and under the line.

A Talmid with Kriah difficulties usually has difficulty with putting together multiple pieces of information or with the eye movements necessary to scan three levels simultaneously. Reading from a ‫ גמרא‬with ‫ נקודות‬will neither aid the Talmid in his understanding of the ‫ גמרא‬nor allow him to develop a fluent reading of ‫גמרא‬.

A Talmid with strong reading skills will adapt well to reading without ‫נקודות‬. He can do this because he has built a robust word bank during his years of learning.

The unfamiliar Aramaic words of ‫גמרא‬ will soon be added to his mental dictionary as he hears his Rebbe properly pronounce the new words. He will soon find reading without ‫ ניקוד‬to be an easier

way to read. Reading with ‫ ניקוד‬is similar to walking with a cane or a crutch. A person with a broken leg must utilize this aid, but a healthy person would find walking with a crutch cumbersome and quite inefficient.

It is important for this Talmid to develop proper reading skills. Any Talmid with persistent reading difficulties at the ‫גמרא‬ learning stage should be evaluated by a reading expert. A remediation program must then be put in place to bring him to the level required for higher level ‫גמרא‬ learning. A Talmid will not feel comfortable with Mesivta and Bais Medrash level Torah learning unless he has strong Kriah skills.
