Educator’s Angle My son recently turned ‫ בר מצוה‬and does not like to Daven as the ‫ש"ץ‬. If he says these words every day wouldn’t he be comfortable with them by now? He has a nice voice and sang a solo in the school choir so he is not afraid to be on stage. What can we do to boost his confidence?

The question is how to detect this issue at an early stage. A Rebbe recently told me thatwhen he raised this issue his Menahel instructed him not to test his 5th grade on fluency in ‫שמונה עשרה‬ because it could damage the student’s ego too greatly. This is a serious concern, and I have found that it must be handled in a most delicate fashion.

There are some indicators that a Bochur does not say the words properly. If a page takes the same amount of time no matter how many words are on it he is probably just looking at the page not In your question you make the point that after saying the ‫שמונה‬ ‫ עשרה‬three times a day for the past few years he should know it by reading each word. Another scenario is when a new ‫ שמונה עשרה‬is present (‫ ) מוסף שבת ר"ח‬and he says it as quickly as if he were now. Unfortunately this is not the case, as many Bochurim have familiar with it. It may be a good time to sit down with your son never learned to Daven properly. Many remember parts of and explain to him the responsibilities of being a ‫ גדול‬and the davening the way they “heard it” in first or second grade. While saying it along with the class they never had a need to look inside importance of proper ‫תפילה‬. With that as a start you may suggest and these errors were incorporated into their rote saying of Ashrei that he read some parts which you are more sure that he does know well ( ‫אשרי‬,‫ ) שמע‬and work your way to ‫שמונה עשרה‬. You etc. When a Talmid has made significant improvement in his may also find it more beneficial to just ‘hear him out’ without reading often I will instruct him to read Davening from a ‫סידור‬. I include warnings that if he finds errors he should not get dejected corrections and relay the information to someone who can correct the issue. It is always important to be mindful of a Bochur’s self because it is likely his memory at fault not his reading. (Adults esteem. should also be careful to regularly review parts of ‫ תפילה‬and Bentching to detect errors which have crept in over time.) For Questions can be sent to: Rabbi Meir Levenson ‫ שמונה עשרה‬the situation is more challenging because less time is spent with the class saying it in unison. Any student who has any 180 White Street Lakewood, NJ 08701 or Call 732-364-7839/ 908-616-9124 level of difficulty with reading may never properly achieve fluency in the ‫שמונה עשרה‬.

A Parrot Named Moishe Aaron came back from the pet store elated at his new purchase -- a parrot. And this wasn't just any parrot, this one could talk. Aaron stayed up all night teaching his new parrot, Moishe, Hebrew. The next morning, while Aaron was putting on his tefillin, Moishe the parrot demanded to know what he was doing. When Aaron explained, the parrot wanted a pair too. Aaron went out and dutifully made a miniature set of tefillin for Moishe. The parrot wanted to learn how to daven and Aaron taught him every prayer. He wanted to learn more about Judaism so Aaron spent months teaching him Torah. In time, Aaron came to love and count on the parrot as a friend and a fellow Jew. One morning, on Rosh Hashana, Aaron rose and got dressed and was about to leave when Moishe demanded to go with him. Aaron explained that shul was not place for a bird but the parrot insisted and was carried to shul on Aaron's shoulder. Needless to say, they made quite a spectacle, and Aaron was questioned by everyone, including the Rabbi and Cantor. They refused to allow a bird into the building on the High Holy Days but Aaron convinced them to let him in this one time, swearing that parrot could daven. Wagers were made with Aaron. Thousands of dollars were bet (even odds) that the parrot could not daven, could not speak Hebrew and knew nothing about Judaism. All eyes were on the African Grey during services. The parrot perched on Aaron's shoulder as one prayer and song passed -- Aaron heard not a peep from the bird. He began to get annoyed, slapping at his shoulder and mumbling under his breath, "Moishe! Daven!" Nothing. "Davendaven, so daven...come on, everybody's looking at you!" Nothing. After Rosh Hashana services were concluded, Aaron found that he owed his shul buddies and the Rabbi over $4,000. He marched home, extremely angry, saying nothing. Finally several blocks from the shul the bird began to sing "Avinu Malkeinu" at the top of his lungs. Aaron stopped and looked at him. "You miserable bird, you cost me over $4,000. Why? After I made your tefillin and taught you how to daven and learned Torah with you. Why did you do this to me?" "Don't be silly," Moishe replied. "Think of the odds on Yom Kippur."
