The proliferation of “Kiddush Clubs” in synagogues should be a cause for concern throughout the entire Jewish community. These gatherings, by their very nature, raise a number of halachic issues in terms of people leaving shul during parts of the davening or laining and showing a blatant lack of kavod for a shul. In addition, the people who participate in these improper gatherings are teaching their children, by example, in ways that are contrary to the Torah.

Beyond the halachic considerations, Kiddush Clubs are known to contribute in a very real way to the growing crisis of alcoholism in the Jewish community. A person who drinks at inappropriate times and in improper ways in a shul building, can easily convince himself that what he is doing is not only proper, but a mitzvah. Obviously, the opposite is true. He is risking his own physical and mental health and may be endangering his shalom bayis.

We base this view on research done by prominent Orthodox professors of pediatrics, who urge that steps be taken to protect our community's children. The organizations dealing with alcoholism, including JACS, Amudim and Open House, all agree that kiddush clubs contribute directly to alcoholism and that children raised in shuls that tolerate such clubs will have a greater propensity for alcohol addiction and abuse when they are older.

The communal kiddush has its place in shuls. It is a forum that brings mispalilim together and promotes achdus. However, it should take place after davening, in a public area and be open to all.

The Vaad Harabonim of Toronto, the organization that represents the Orthodox Rabbis of Toronto, commends those communal leaders and organizations who have taken a public stand against such groups and we encourage others to become involved in the effort to educate the public about the potential dangers.

Choose Life, Not Kiddush Clubs, The Jewish Week

by Dr. Philip Lanzkowsky, Dr. Howard Trachtman & Dr. Irving Zoltan New York - It is now acknowledged, after years of denial, that alcoholism is increasingly prevalent in the Jewish community. In suburban Baltimore, two centers are already dedicated to the treatment of recovering Jewish drug addicts and alcoholics. It is estimated that approximately 10 percent of Jewish men have problems with excessive alcohol intake and dependence.

The extent of the problem among Orthodox versus less observant Jews is open to debate but many professionals have expressed concern that the Orthodox lifestyle may provide opportunities for alcohol abuse and that religious practices may provide justification for and mask excessive alcohol ingestion. The most disturbing fact is that young Jews seem to be more vulnerable to alcohol abuse than their parents. This is reason enough for Jewish parents to set a good example and avoid behaviors that promote inappropriate alcohol consumption.

As pediatricians, we are troubled by the prevalence of Kiddush Clubs in Orthodox shuls and the availability of hard liquor for the congregation at Kiddush after services. The habit of having a drink during prayer services arose in the small shtetls of Europe before the full impact and adverse effects of alcohol on health were appreciated. We think that Kiddush Clubs on shul premises promote and sanctions behavior that can have deleterious effects on younger members of the community.

Regular meetings of Kiddush Clubs provide an implicit sanction for a form of covert drinking. It provides a veneer of respectability and exclusivity, suggesting a “coolness” about those individuals who are part of this private, select drinking group. These adults become the enablers of youth drinking. This is well described by Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, executive vice president emeritus of the Orthodox Union: “It’s not only drinking, it’s idealized drinking which is a very, very bad message for the kids.”

What validation and sanction for this behavior does a child or adolescent need more than “I saw it in shul?” The Orthodox Union voted to recommend that affiliated synagogues end Kiddush Clubs. Although many congregations objected that this as an excessive response to isolated incidents of alcohol abuse, other enlightened shuls have curtailed their Kiddush Clubs. Other denominations, such as Reform temples, have never established this practice.

There are numerous publications in the pediatric literature detailing the adverse effects of alcohol exposure on susceptible children and adolescents. An extreme example of the physical danger of alcohol is illustrated in a recent article in Newsweek by Lisa Miller that describes a young “orthodox” man who became so drunk on Shabbat that he drove his car into the oncoming traffic lane, rolled his car and crashed into a cottage. It is our contention that there are vulnerable children in our communities whose latent propensity to excessive alcohol intake may be triggered by Kiddush Clubs.

We do not even address the impact of Kiddush Clubs on synagogue decorum, the impropriety of interrupting services, or the disrespect for prayer engendered by Kiddush Club participation. We do not even touch upon the potential liability that synagogues may face through property or personal damages to congregants or others that might occur following alcohol ingestion on shul premises.

Pediatricians have advocated for bans on smoking and fought against advertising campaigns directed at adolescents.

These efforts have achieved a substantial reduction in smoking among young people and have convinced pediatricians that they can change unhealthy practices and combat long-standing, condoned behaviors. As pediatricians and members of Orthodox shuls, we believe that banning Kiddush Clubs would help protect vulnerable children and adolescents.

In discussing this matter with synagogue leadership, the common justification for allowing such shul clubs is that there have been no adverse consequences in a particular locale. In addition, some feel that this custom is not easily challenged because it is too deeply rooted and the participants are frequently senior and otherwise respected congregants.

This laissez-faire attitude towards Kiddush Clubs, this inexplicable timidity in confronting club members, and this misguided attempt to minimize the problem by asserting the involvement of only a small group of outliers are all unacceptable strategies. They evade parental and congregational responsibility to ensure that children are not exposed to unhealthy habits especially within the confines of the synagogue. Kiddush Clubs are a phenomenon unique to Orthodox Jews. Rather than choosing to hide behind the banner of tradition, we encourage confronting this potential health problem in a straightforward manner.

We call upon like-minded medical professionals and other individuals to assert their influence in their communities to finally put an end to social practices that foster abnormal consumption of alcohol in shuls.

WHY KIDDUSH CLUBS MUST GO Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, Executive Vice President Emeritus, Orthodox Union The recent decision by the Board of Directors of the Orthodox Union, by an overwhelming majority, to issue a statement calling for the elimination of shul “Kiddush Clubs”, enabled the organization to take a giant first step to address two problematic areas of contemporary Orthodox Jewish life. The first of these areas is an oft-bemoaned dearth of shul spirituality. The second, perhaps more troublesome, area is the growth of delinquent and self-destructive behaviors, primarily with adolescents but persisting into adulthood, of substance abuse and related misbehaviors.

An especially troublesome contributor to these spiritual and communal delinquencies are “Kiddush Clubs” in which groups of congregants, almost invariably men, leave davening at key points, typically the haftarah, and withdraw to a side room to partake of hard, expensive liquor, commonly fine single malt scotch whiskey. The sight of people leaving davening en masse dampens davening for those who choose to remain and to respectfully daven and destroys kavod ha’tefillah (the dignity of the service). It is ironic that the Kiddush Club exodus usually coincides with the haftarah, which is a unique opportunity to encounter the Prophetic message.

But the Kiddush Club stands for far more than a callous disregard of the sanctity of the davening. It serves as a setting within which adults drink immoderate amounts of alcohol and often return to synagogue more than mildly intoxicated. The rest of the congregation observes this behavior, most particularly the youth, including the very children of these participants. Some readers may recall when a Kiddush consisted of, at most, a shot cup of whiskey. In the Kiddush Clubs that I have observed, the Kiddush is sometimes recited over a full bottle of whiskey, which is then “polished off.” This practice glorifies and idealizes alcohol precisely when alcohol and other addictions are clearly on the rise in our community.

At a recent convention of the Orthodox mental health organization Nefesh International, therapist after therapist indicated that almost invariably the youngsters struggling with alcoholic tendencies trace their introduction to alcohol experiences they had in shul or at simchas such as weddings and bar mitzvahs. A recently convened group of 65 pulpit rabbis and day school educators from across the Greater New York area confirmed our diagnosis of these social ills, and welcomed the Orthodox Union’s leadership in coordinating efforts toward ameliorating these problems. Many rabbis told us of their struggles to end the disgrace of the Kiddush Clubs but felt that they alone did not command sufficient authority to eliminate it. They have welcomed the support of the Orthodox Union and its lay leadership.

One area of support for our initiative comes from an unlikely quarter. A cover story in the New York Times Magazine (January 9, 2005) noted that most college fraternities now ban alcohol. The New York Times article points out ways in which alcohol-free fraternities began to develop more wholesome alternative cultures.

Drinking was once integral to the fraternity culture, and fraternities still get opposition from alumni in response to their ban. Stopping Kiddush Clubs will effect a similar culture change, in which the dignity of davening is restored, and in which alcohol is seen as the dangerous substance that it is.

A particularly vehement opponent of our attempt to stop the Kiddush Club practice was an officer in one of our regions. He was an avid Kiddush Club member until he took his sons and their friends to a professional basketball game. Some people in front of them were imbibing and were beginning to show the effects of the liquor. When the father muttered about how poorly behaved these people were, the kids spontaneously answered in unison, “But they look just like you guys when you come back to Mussaf after the Kiddush Club.”

This one incident was enough to convince our friend of the wisdom of our project.
