BIKUR CHOLIM offers a Checklist for a Healthy and Safe Summer Break Use this safety checklist to help keep your children in good health while they have fun this summer.

Refillable water bottles Children should drink 12 ounces of cool water or a sports drink before they head out to play. And they should take water breaks during games. If your children go to camp or play on a team, make sure they refill their water bottle several times a day.

Helmet. Before your children ride away on a bike, scooter, or other set of wheels, make sure they’re wearing a well-fitting helmet.

Bug spray. If ticks or mosquitoes are common in your area, apply repellent with DEET, but go for the lowest concentration possible. Repellent with 10% DEET is effective for about 2 hours, while 30% DEET works for about 5 hours. Do not apply a spray with high concentration of DEET more than once a day. Poison ivy protection. Poison ivy soap can break down proteins that make poison ivy or poison oak so irritating. Keep calamine lotion on hand to use on skin that breaks out in an itchy rash.

First aid kit. Keep a first aid kit in your home, in your car, and bring one with you on vacation.

Keep first aid kits someplace where you can reach them, but the children can’t.

Sun protection. Get wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and cotton clothes that cover your child’s skin to reduce exposure to the sun’s damaging rays.

Sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least 45 SPF every day for kids older than 6 months. (It’s best to keep babies out of the sun).

Reapply after swimming, sweating, or after more than 2 hours in the sun.

Car safety. To minimize the risk of a child getting trapped in a hot vehicle, leave a purse, case, or cell phone in the back seat. That way, you get in the habit of checking in the back seat before leaving the vehicle. Always lock your car and trunk, even parked in the driveway at home, and always keep keys and fobs out of the reach of little ones.

School is out, the days are long… at last, summer is here!

With all of the excitement calling upon your family’s attention, it is a good idea to take a moment to think about the role that technology should – or should not – be playing in your summer diversions.

Here are some tips for summer digital safety for your family. 





Although kids may be home for summer break, most parents work throughout the summer months. This can lead to kids spending a significant amount of time left to their own devices (literally).

Make sure kids get some fresh air with sports and extra-curricular activities that don’t involve computers and gadgets. Children nowadays face health risks like sleep deprivation and obesity due to lack of physical exercise.

The lack of homework can be used as an opportunity for parents to spend quality time with their children in a positive way. Children who have positive relationships with their parents are a lot less likely to seek unhealthy digital content.

Summer breaks are meant to enjoy, relax and refresh for the coming school year. Let’s teach kids to do it the right the way. Let it be fun, let it be enjoyable, let it be productive and most of all let it be safe!

CRISIS: Over 71% of non-frum Jews in North America are intermarrying and approximately 90% of Jews are not Shomer Torah U’mitzvos.

What can we do to help?

(In 1950 the intermarriage rate was 6% and in 1970 it was 17%. Today far more Jews believe that having a good sense of humor is essential to their Jewish identity rather than observing Jewish law — 42% compared to 19%.)

SOLUTION: Do Kiruv QUESTION: Is there a Torah obligation on every individual to do kiruv?

YES! In fact there are a number of chiyuvim involved.

Here are just a few of the mekoros that obligate us to do our part in kiruv.

V’ahavta Lirei’acha Kamocha: Rav Chaim Volozhin based on the Rambam explains the Mishnah in Pirkei Avos “Oheiv es habrios u’m’karvan l’Torah,” love people and bring them closer to Torah, that the greatest act of Ahavah is to bring someone closer to Torah. Torah and a relationship with H-shem are the greatest possessions. If we love someone we want them to have the most important thing in life.

Hashavas Aveida: The Chofetz Chaim explains that if we must return a lost object to its owner, it’s a kal v’chomer that if he has lost out on his relationship with the Torah his eternal connection to the Ribono Shel Olam we must surely try to return it.

Ahavas H-shem: In the Sefer Hamitzvos, the Rambam explains that part of the Mitzvah of Loving H-shem is getting others to love Him also. If one truly loves H-shem, he would want to tell everyone about H-shem as we learn from Avraham Avinu. The Sefer Chareidim (Perek 68) quotes the Zohar that the reward of someone who is mekareiv people is unfathomable.

Kiddush H-shem: Chazal tell us that everything H-shem created is for Kavod Shamayim.

When H-shem’s glory is challenged, certainly we must do something about it. The Rambam in Sefer Hamitzvos describes Kiddush H-shem as “l’farsam ha’emunah hazos ha’amitis b’olam” to publicize this truthful belief system throughout the world.

Lo Saamod Al Dam Rei’echa: Don’t stand idle over your brother’s blood. If you see someone drowning, you have an obligation to save them. The Shlah Hakodesh make a kal vachomer that if you need to save someone who is physically drowning, how much more so for one who is spiritually drowning.

Harbatzas Hatorah: The Gemara (Bava Metzia 85a) writes that H-shem is mevatel a gezeirah for someone who teaches Torah to the child of an am haaretz.

Kol Yisroel Areivim Zeh Lazeh: Jews are guarantors one to another. So if you are not keeping a mitzvah it is my responsibility to help. This is because the Jewish People are one. We are all cells in the body of Klal Yisroel. Hence we can be motzei one another in kiddush, etc.

Hocheach tochiach es amisecha: This doesn’t mean that we should go around reprimanding people as H-shem’s minister of truth. It means, as the Rambam explains, that you care enough about another person that they don’t hurt themselves. It requires sensitivity and judgment, how and when. It requires that we don’t embarrass anyone and that you speak b’nachas and that he feels it’s for his benefit. This pasuk also teaches that we need to correct others, otherwise we carry their sin. The Chofetz Chaim explains that when we die H-shem may say to us “Why didn’t you keep Shabbos, learn Torah, and wash Netilas yadayim?” You’re going to think “What’s going on, I did all that?!” Unless you tried to correct those who didn’t keep the Mitzvos, you will carry their sin. Every Jew is a guarantor for each other.

Hachzakas Hatorah: The Shaarei Teshuva quotes the Talmud Yerushalmi that Arur asher lo yakim.. includes someone who can strengthen people to perform Torah U’mitzvos and does not do so.

Ohr L’Goyim: We are meant to be a light unto the nations of the world, that brings all people to the recognition of Hakadosh Baruch Hu and to His service. We entered into a bris at Har Sinai that we would keep this commitment as an am. But how brightly can the light of Klal Yisrael burn for the nations of the world, if most of its members are lost to assimilation?

The greatest benefit to getting involved in Kiruv is that it changes you. Whether it is understanding the ikarei emunah or hashkafos hachaim that you become familiar with, or whether it is the Ahavas Yisroel that is generated by reaching out to Acheinu Kol Beis Yisroel, your life and your family’s life will be forever enriched. You are giving yourself the greatest gift. Additionally you will IY”H merit Divine blessing, as many of the gedolim have said, when H-shem sees that you are taking care of His children, He will take care of you and your children - midah k’neged midah.

A great Chasidisha Rebbe once said that just as the Beis Hamikdash was destroyed through Sinas Chinum - baseless hatred, the Beis Hamikdash will be rebuilt through Ahavas Chinam - unconditional love. All it takes is a small act of Ahavas Yisrael to reach out and make a difference.

Are Slurpees Kosher?

The Slurpee season is now well under way and consumers who are seeking relief from the summer heat have begun the migration to local 7-Elevens, gas stations and other variety stores for ice-cold and refreshing Slurpees. With a Slurpee in one hand and a cell phone in the other, responsible kosher consumers flood our phone lines with the popular question: “Can I drink my Slurpee?”

Traditionally, COR and other kashrus agencies have published lists of kosher certified Slurpee syrups. Kashrus organizations will typically only certify that the listed syrups are manufactured in a certified kosher facility but they do not certify the stores that sell the Slurpees. This is certainly the case in our great city. Once the syrups are unpacked and loaded into the machines, Slurpees are no longer supervised. The resulting question then becomes, “Can anything be wrong with unsupervised Slurpees?”

The primary point of discussion is whether the store might be substituting popular brands with generic brands that produce similar tasting syrups that are not kosher certified. Although the store may describe the product that it is loaded in the machine as the popular kosher syrup, the possibility exists that they may be using a non-kosher substitute. This can be easily verified by the consumer by asking if you can check the box of syrup which feeds directly into the machine. The label on the box will display the company name and product.

A second point is that stores may change the syrups from one flavour to another without cleaning the machine in between. Even if the existing flavour is kosher, it is difficult to know whether the machine previously contained a kosher flavour. The fact is that a potentially small amount of potentially non-kosher syrup that remains in the machine gets mixed with the kosher flavour and is likely batul (nullified). I will add that someone once told me that his Coke Slurpee tasted like banana flavour.

A third point to address is that the Slurpee machine that was previously used for a non-kosher flavour does not become treif because in order for a cold non-kosher syrup to be absorbed into the machine, it would have to sit still inside the machine for twenty-four hours. This is not likely to be the case.

In summary, consumers must be knowledgeable as to which companies and flavours are kosher. This information can be found on the 2015 Canadian Slurpee List. It is recommended that consumers request to see the boxes of syrup that feed the machines so that the brand and flavour are verified as ones that are kosher certified. ______________________________________________________________________ COR / www.cor.ca / questions@cor.ca / 416 635-9550
