Although we have completed the Shemittah year, we must continue to be vigilent as a range of Shemittah fruits have recently surfaced at many local supermarkets and at small retail fruit and vegetable stores. At the present time, we are aware of Shoham pomegranates and “Mehadrin” Persimmons that have come in from Israel.

Generally speaking, Shemittah produce comes from farms that are not Shomrai Shevi’is and use the export market to compensate for the weakened demand at home. While some fruit can be consumed b’kedusha others are nearing the zman biur. Shemittah produce is the subject to the intricate laws of Shemittah which impact how we are to treat them. For more information and specific questions please contact the COR. Israeli produce can be recognized through a sticker with the country of origin on the surface of the fruit. Canadian labeling law requires that a supermarket display the country of origin through appropriate signage. Although signage is not always accurate, it can serve to identify Israeli produce and should always be checked.
