Professor Ananya Mukherjee Vice-Chancellor, Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, Delhi-NCR
Good afternoon,
Honourable Guests, Distinguished Chancellor, Trustees, Members of the Board of Management, Deans, Colleagues, and the Graduating Class of 2025 and their families to the 11th Convocation Ceremony of Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, Delhi-NCR.
Professor Ananya
Mukherjee Vice-Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University, Delhi-NCR
I am honored to welcome as our Guest of Honour, Mr. Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa and former CEO of NITI Aayog, is the architect of India’s transformational initiatives and champion of India’s progress. He has been a key driver of flagship national initiatives such as Startup India, Make in India, Incredible India, Kerala: God’s Own Country and the Aspirational Districts Program.
It is also my privilege to confer honorary doctorates of science on three highly distinguished individuals:
Dr. V. Narayanan, a towering figure in Indian space science and engineering, is one of the nation’s foremost propulsion experts and a distinguished leader of ISRO. Over the course of four decades, he has significantly shaped India’s space program, playing a central role in launch vehicle development, indigenous cryogenic propulsion, and human spaceflight readiness. His deep scientific acumen, technological foresight, and commitment to self-reliance have left an indelible mark on India’s space program.
Elevated to the highest scientific rank of Distinguished Scientist (Apex Grade), Dr. Narayanan took charge as Chairman of ISRO, Secretary of the Department of Space, and Chairman of the Space Commission in January 2025. Under his visionary leadership, ISRO is advancing toward future missions such as the Venus Orbiter, Chandrayaan-4, Bharatiya Antariksha Station, and the next-generation launch vehicles.
Dr. Archana Sharma, Principal Staff Scientist at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, is one of the distinguished Indian scientists abroad, having worked at the forefront of high-energy physics since 1989. A true pioneer in detector technology and science diplomacy, she exemplifies how science can transcend borders to foster global collaboration, education, and impact.
Dr. Sharma holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Delhi University (1989), a D.Sc. from the University of Geneva (1996), and an M.B.A. from the International University in Geneva. In 2001, she became the first Indian scientist to be employed by CERN, and since then has played a defining role in SoME of the most significant scientific experiments of our times. She is the founder of the CMS GEM Collaboration—a
consortium of 40 institutions across 17 countries—which she has led since 2008. The project has produced over 75 Ph.D. graduates, including many from India, and facilitated technology transfer to Indian industries, marking a critical intersection of academic research and applied innovation.
Mr. Pradeep Kumar Sinha has distinguished himself over a four-decade career in public service. He has served in various capacities in the government of India, rising to the position of Cabinet secretary. He subsequently moved to the Prime Minister’s Office, retiring in March 2021 from government service after 44 years of continuous service. He is currently serving as the Non-Executive Chairman of ICICI Bank.
An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College and the Delhi School of Economics, Mr. Sinha also holds an M.Phil in Social Sciences and was a visiting fellow at Oxford University. He has also attended several prestigious programs at Stanford University and Harvard University. He has held several key positions across the Power, Oil & Gas and Port and Shipping Ministries, shaping India’s energy policy and infrastructure development. He has been instrumental in policy formulation, governance reforms, and cross-sectoral coordination at the highest levels.
And now, in this stellar gathering, it is my honour to present SoME highlights of 202425. (July 1 2024 to March 31 2025).
Your dedication and passion has left an indelible mark on our hearts. Though you are gone, their spirit and wisdom continue to inspire us.
World-renowned physicist Professor Rohini Godbole, passed away on October 25, 2024, leaving behind an indelible legacy. She was a trailblazer in the field of high-energy physics. Her life and work continue to inspire future generations of scientists. She was an Honorary Doctorate and a Distinguished Professor of this university.
We remember with much sadness and pride, the passing of Professor K Kasturirangan who had graciously accepted an honorary doctorate from Shiv Nadar University. The former ISRO chief and illustrious academic, Professor Kasturirangan leaves behind an unmatched legacy. He chaired the committee that developed India’s New Education Policy, with its emphasis on holistic, multidisciplinary education.
We deeply mourn the passing of Professor Santosh Kumar. As a distinguished physicist, a devoted mentor and teacher, and an exceptional human being, he leaves behind an irreplaceable void. His presence will endure in the work he has left behind and the countless lives he has touched.

Dr. His deep scientific acumen, technological foresight, and commitment to selfreliance have left an indelible mark on India’s space program.
Dr. Narayanan hails from a humble background and earned his M.Tech in Cryogenic Engineering and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He joined ISRO in 1984 after a brief industrial stint and steadily rose through the ranks to become the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) in 2018. As Director, he led the development of critical propulsion systems, delivering over 200 engines and control power plants that powered India’s launch vehicles and satellites.
His pioneering work came into national prominence when India faced international denial of cryogenic technology. He led the indigenous development of the Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS) for GSLV Mk-II and subsequently served as Project Director for the C25 cryogenic stage of the LVM3 vehicle. His contributions ensured the successful launches of Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3, the latter making India the first country to land near the Moon’s south pole. As Chair of the Expert Committee investigating the Chandrayaan-2 landing anomaly, his leadership was pivotal in the course correction that led to Chandrayaan-3’s global success.
Dr. Narayanan was also central to the development and readiness of the Aditya L1 mission, and his work laid the propulsion groundwork for the Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight Programme, including the human-rating of the LVM3 vehicle and the development of life support and crew escape systems.
Dr. Narayanan has been recognized with 26 prestigious awards, including the APJ Abdul Kalam Award, National Design Award, ASI Gold Medal, and the 2024 Laurels for Team Achievement from the International Academy of Astronautics.
