HOUSE OF BONSAI

Library and Bonsai Garden

Meadow Lane Lock, Nottingham 2023

Course: Comprehensive Design Studio 3

Atelier: Phenomenology and Craftsmanship

Our health and wellness can be significantly influenced by the built environment. The traditional notions of gathering and community have been challenged by technology in the 21st century, hence communities require a focal point for gathering and to socialise away from technology. Connecting with nature is important in highly urbanised societies for adequate restoration of mental health and physical well-being.

The House of Bonsai is based on the ideas of growth and nature as keys to promote wellbeing. It is through the care, production and growth of bonsai trees that an individual can achieve a sense of intellectual and spiritual growth, contributing to their well-being. The crafting, cultivating and maintaining of bonsai trees will enhance the individuals experience of compassion, patience and creativity; as well as allowing the gardener to develop a particular set of skills that can enhance quality of life.

The House of Bonsai brings together a diverse community of people near Nottingham’s city centre. Along with providing opportunities for cross-generational activities, the library and bonsai workshop aims to enhance a sense of belonging.

The programme focuses on concepts derived from the principles of growth, spirituality, reflection, and movement, all of which aim to promote well-being. An individual can experience a sense of intellectual and spiritual growth through the crafting and cultivation of bonsai trees.

GNR Building to Botanical Oasis

Botanical Garden

Course: Interdiciplinery Design Studies

Adaptive Re-Use

Repurposing Nottingham’s GNR Building into a captivating botanical garden. By preserving the building’s framework and infusing it with greenery, I aimed to create a serene oasis in the heart of the city. The schemes focus is on fostering biodiversity, providing gathering spaces, and promoting sustainable living practices, all while honoring the building’s heritage.

The objective was to contrast the utilisation of digital tools like Revit with analog methods, showcasing final drawings in analog format.

Masterplan and Hybrid Housing

St Phillips Marsh, Bristol

2022

Course: Comprehensive Design Studio 2

Atelier: Phenomenology and Craftsmanship

This project focuses on the rejuvenation of an area of Bristol, close to the famous Temple Meads station and on the periphery of some major development sites. St Philips Marsh has a long industrial history providing ‘blue collar’ jobs, but its location as an inner suburb of Bristol makes it a desirable target for ‘gentrification’.

The scheme aims to provide housing development that will support the local desire to maintain a robust local working economy in the area, with space for new sustainable light industries and affordable housing for workers.

The Masterplan makes use of some new streets as well as retaining existing ones to improve accessibility and activity in the neighbourhood. Having communal courtyards was highly significant for the public spaces.
