Ahmedabad Semester lX

The Millowners association building (ATMA) was designed by the renowned Swiss French architect Le Corbusier in Ahmdebad. Initially inspired by the Council of Excellence competition organized by the Council of Architecture.

The project aims to adaptively reuse the Millowners Association building by integrating the COA competition’s design for the Centre of Excellence. The objective is to preserve the building’s original context and respect its surroundings while meticulously integrating its distinctive design elements. The vision is to create a modern yet timeless design honoring various historical periods.

The Council of Excellence serves as a platform fostering interaction and collaboration across diverse branches of architecture. It provides a comprehensive array of resources and activities, such as workshops, seminars, archives containing architectural drawings and models, a training center & exhibitions all housed within a single facility. Its aim is to promote collaboration, research, and learning within the architectural community , while also disseminating knowledge through this comprehensive facility.

The site, spanning 3 acres, features the Ahmedabad Textile Mill Owners Association building(MOA), in Ahmedebad. Its topography slopes down from west to east, offering views of the Sabarmati River towards the East of MOA.

FORM

The Atma Building, designed by Le Corbusier, was constructed based on five modern architectural principles: open floor plan, free facade, pilotis, long windows and roof garden. The aim is to integrate the open floor plan concept while challenging the rigid exterior form of the existing structure. Embracing a similar grid pattern, the new design fosters fluid movement through curved walls between spaces, contrasting the existing building’s rigid cubical form.

HEAT REDUCTION

Instead of large openings, the design incorporates long & narrower slits as openings. These slits serve to allow air to cool down gradually through the Venturi effect as it enters the building. This approach helps regulate the temperature inside while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic with the brick facade.

CONTRAST

To address the site’s context and climate, thick external walls are erected on the South West side to mitigate heat and block direct sunlight penetration. Utilizing exposed red brick not only aids in cooling the interior but also serves to create a visual contrast with the concrete construction of the MOA building (existing), especially accentuated by the free facade at its West entrance.

APPROACH

The design emphasizes a contrast with the existing ATMA building at the West entrance, while guiding users through an experiential transition towards discovering the Sabarmati River.

Meanwhile, the East entrance embraces the riverfront opposite by adopting a more open approach to accommodate various activities while leading the users to seek out the existing ATMA building.

CONNECTING

The concept involves extending the current pedestrian ramp from the West entrance, guiding users seamlessly to the next level as they enjoy views of the Sabarmati River towards the East. This extension incorporates roof gardens and bridges that interconnect various spaces, all converging to a central OAT. Introducing a pedestrian ramp towards the East entrance serves to entice users to experience elevated views of the river, drawing them towards the ATMA building as they ascend. This design not only provides a unique perspective of the river from a height but also encourages exploration and discovery of the architectural elements along the way.

Front view Framing views Terrace roofs ingeniously connect the ramp from West to East, directing toward the Sabarmati River, facilitating pedestrian movement and offering elevated scenic views. Thick towering walls provide effective shading, reducing heat gain, ensuring cooler indoor spaces. Contrasts with the existing MOA building, which features a free facade.

Cubbon Park , Bangalore Semester V

CONCEPT

The concept revolves around seamlessly transitioning from the verdant ambiance of the Rose Garden into the library, while also integrating green spaces within the library itself. This is achieved through the design of diverse courtyard sizes, tailored to accommodate different types of gatherings. These courtyards are positioned between various functions or spaces, forming pockets of greenery throughout the library.

The site, situated in Cubbon Park at the existing State Library and near the Sheshadri Iyer Memorial Statue, encompasses an 8500 sqm area, including an existing Rose Garden. In conceptualizing the space, I aimed to seamlessly integrate the Rose Garden with the library, allowing users to transition from the garden to the library’s southern entrance. Furthermore, the space between the garden and the library’s built mass presents opportunities for hosting various gathering events.

To extend this concept to the next level, some of the built masses consist of single-level structures with stepped roof terraces. These terraces are positioned around the gathering space to provide visual perspectives from multiple levels.

Situated in Sompura, within Bangalore Urban District, the site resides in a developing area, particularly in residential projects in recent years.

Positioned amidst a Mango grove and Eucalyptus plantation, with a stormwater drain running alongside, the aim was to create residential units comprising 1BHK, 2BHK, and 3BHK configurations.

Each floor was staggered to introduce voids, facilitating the integration of green spaces. Emphasizing natural light and ventilation, significant openings were placed on the Northern and Southern facades, capitalizing on the presence of the Mango and Eucalyptus plantations.

All balconies of each unit were consolidated on one side, thereby generating voids within the structure to accommodate green spaces. This arrangement was complemented by staggering each unit, optimizing the utilization of available space and fostering a harmonious integration of nature within the development.

Stacking 1BHK (type A & B) , 2BHK & 3BHK on top of eachother creating voids that open towards the South, overlooking the Mango grove Plantation and the adjacent stormwater drain. It optimizes space usage while embracing the natural surroundings, providing residents with picturesque views and ensuring excellent ventilation and natural light.

MODULE 2

Stacking 2BHK & 3BHK on top of eachother vertically, creating voids that accommodate semi-open spaces such as balconies. These balconies were oriented towards the North, offering panoramic views of the Eucalyptus Plantation. Which not only maximizes the use of available space but also allows residents to enjoy the serene ambiance and natural beauty of the surrounding plantation.

The modules were positioned on the site, staggered to delineate zones for diverse community activities.

1BHK of Module 1 were situated towards the southern region on the ground floor, staggered to form communal gathering areas tailored for both bachelor residents and families within Module 1 units, with orientations towards the Mango Plantation.

Additionally, the primary community gathering spaces, including the amphitheater and clubhouse, were placed between Module 1 and Module 2, fostering interaction and cohesion among residents from both modules.

A wall section cutting through the voidsgenerated by staggering each unit showcases their function as semi-open spaces for balconies. Within these voids, vertical gardens adorn each floor, enriching the living environment with greenery and contributing to a harmonious integration of nature within the architectural design.

A sectional view through Module 2 reveals the placement of openings for light and ventilation, all oriented towards the North, facing the Eucalyptus Plantation. This arrangement ensures optimal access to natural light and fresh air for the 2BHK and 3BHK units within Module 2, creating views of the lush plantation.

The given brief was to design a shelter responding to post natural disasters. Since Nepal being an earthquake prone region we designed a collapsible & modular rescue shelters. Where the user can easily put together or dismantle it.
