FEDERATION SQUARE

Lecture2

38,000 square metres (3.8 hectares) of steel and masonry, built on top of the city’s most heavily-trafficked railway. Fed Square is made up of a series of interlocking and cascading spaces, opening at all angles into the city and creating unexpected connections and vistas. In response to the brief, the design was heavily influenced by the idea of ‘Federation’; bringing disparate parts together to form a coherent whole.

trace the water connection on our site have programs facing the water channel the water channel also leads the circulation (lead large flow of people from federation square to come to Birrarung Mar) the start of the water is a waterfall which takes advantage of the large height difference, the end of the water will be flow to back to the Yarra River and form a feature the bridge is moved to align with Russel St, because it was too crowded in front of the federation square, the elements can be spread to the whole site the bridge is pointing at the Art Precinct to respond to the further city planning however the opening of the sunken plaza is too big, which blocks the ground floor circulation. Two choices: either small channel directly lead towards the riverfront, or make it completely vault level

MID SEM FEEDBACK • bridge is too low (cannot allow large ships to go under, especially for the parts in front of the boating clubs opposite to the river) • asking people to stay back in federation square, instead of sending them to other places (question the bridge) • the space in front of the federation square can be developed (currently is vertical wall, can use the height difference to buffer the edge and create pop up market so that the Princess Walk circulation and the stairs in between the building circulation and be further activated • the path linking from federation square to the vaults can be activated (have fish and chips store outside the walls) • water square (make the water channel more meaningful) • connection between all the programs (same language) • more ship stops • more reserach on water plaza (filtration)
