Welcome to As you can see, this edition of Shire Talk Magazine, along with our social media feeds have been full of Shire Rewards. We are truly excited to be launching this amazing platform that allows businesses to network and the people of the Shire to benefit.

We have a number of businesses who have jumped on board with our launch offer and as you can see from the logos below, there is a whole range, from cafes, beauty to fitness and car maintenance. You will also see their profiles throughout the magazine. In fact, there were so many that wanted to join that we didn’t have space to include them all in this issue, so we will introduce you to them next quarter.

So how does it work?

Where can I use my points?

Shire Rewards is a loyalty program that gives you money back on your purchases. That money is stored as points on your app which you can then spend at any retailer within the Shire Rewards Network.

At any retailer within the Shire Rewards Network. They will display our sign at their point of sale. We already have several businesses involved, but this is growing on a daily basis.

Does it cost me anything?

How do I redeem my points?

No, it costs nothing to set up and the app is free

This is all done via the app. You select the number of points you wish to redeem and the retailer you wish to spend them with.

You then show them that you have used some points with them in order to reduce your bill.

What do I have to do?

It’s simple. All you have to do is download the app from the App Store or Google Play, set up your account and away you go!

How do I earn points?

When you make a purchase, just take a photo of your receipt and upload it to the app. The points are then calculated based on the percentage the retailer is offering, and then added to your Shire Rewards account.

How much are my points worth?

Each 100 points is worth $1.

Can I use my points for anything else?

Yes, each month, we will choose a local primary school or charity.

Instead of spending your points, you can choose to donate your Reward Dollars to them.

Are there times when I can earn bonus points or get a special offer?

Yes. Using the latest technology, you may receive notifications via text message of special offers that are only available to Shire Rewards customers. This means that you can also win prizes or additional points just by being in the “right place at the right time!”

WELCOME TO THE SPRING 2019 EDITION OF SHIRE TALK. This is my first edition as the new managing editor, and I’m delighted to be here. Shire Talk is such a great magazine, with so much to offer, just like the Sutherland Shire itself.

The Shire is a great place to live and work, but have you noticed more empty shops than usual lately? We have! Shire Talk has an article that not only shares insights on this problem, but lets you know how you personally can be a big part of the solution. Let’s work together to shop locally and save our local shops. (pages 4 and 5).

Anyone who loves the environment will love our story on Cronulla going Plastic Free on page 7.

With the delights of spring, we’ve looked at the spring fashions and how to dress up or down, ready for any occasion this season on pages 8 and 9.

“These platforms takeaway 33% of the revenue off a single order, eating into a massive amount of the profit this 33% goes from our back pocket into big corporations and away from the community,” Phillip said.

“Cronulla is currently seeing a mass number of shops become vacant, properties are staying vacant and not occupied due to the increasing rental prices and the number of landlords not looking to negotiate on rental prices,” he said.

“The problem here is that the small business type that can pay these rental demands are not cafes and restaurants or other small businesses as we work on very small margins,” he said.

“You can also add in the increase and inflation of cost of goods, taxes, over regulations and the decline in foot traffic because of the lack of parking and accessibility to the area equals an unsustainable business model.”

It’s not just at Cronulla that small business owners are suffering. Hayley Bowen who owns She Street in Caringbah said the closing down of local shops was changing the face of shopping locally.

“It’s honestly such a shame. If we continue to lose shops in our community run by the people that live in it, we really start to lose the heart and soul of the area,” Hayley said.

Caruso’s Italian Restaurant owner, Rocky Pitarelli, said lack of Council regulations and not ensuring diversity in small businesses in one area was one of the causes of too much competition forcing down prices.

T

here are over 200 retail shops and commercial premises available for lease throughout the Sutherland Shire. The changing retail environment, with more people shopping online, and local retailers struggling to make ends meet has seen the closure of over 25 retail shops in Cronulla mall alone in the past 18 months.

Cronulla Surf Co. owner, Arnold Cohen, said the problem was not only the turnover in retail shops and the empty shops, but the mix of what replaced lost artisan shops.

“We’ve lost 26 shops in Cronulla and the retail shops are being replaced by services such as pathology, dentist, insurance agencies, or remaining empty,” Arnold said.

“This really changes the feel of the place - so it’s losing the beachy, artisan shopping feel,” he said.

“I’ve had locals tell me they don’t come here to shop anymore, just to buy coffees from time to time.”

Arnold said there were a number of reasons why there were fewer customers in Cronulla. “The change in traffic conditions a while back with no left turn into Cronulla Street really impacted on local retailers,” Arnold said.

“The closure of the Cronulla Women’s Rest Centre has also reduced customers to the mall,” he said.

“Of course, people choosing to buy online instead of shopping locally hurts all the local retailers.”

Dogma owner, Phillip Burriel agreed that online shopping, especially people using programs like Uber Eats, Deliveroo, and Menu Log to order food instead of going to the restaurant or cafe is really hurting the smaller business owner.

“For example, there are six pizza places in Caringbah alone, which is too many to be sustained in the area,” he said.

“Add in the pizza shops in Gymea, Miranda, and Cronulla and there are over 15 pizza shops all fighting over the same demographic, which makes it hard,” Rocky said.

Many people don’t realise that small business owners of restaurants and cafes rely on weekday customers to make any profit.

“We carry large rents, and without customers during the week, it is a real struggle,” he said.

What became very clear when doing interviews for this article was the small margin that small businesses work on. Small business owners often work seven days a week, and only employ staff when they can afford it.

Most families running a small business live on the margins in weekly turnover. They also don’t have the buying capacity to derive benefit from economies of scale, and often have to absorb the costs of fees that big corporations charge, including fees on every transaction that uses eftpos or a credit card.

“We don’t make excuses - we sacrifice family time, holidays, we get up and go to it. As a small business owner - I’m the social media person, I order the stock, I have to do everything, I make sure the business is complaint, sales reports, taxes, everything. Without passionate, small businesses, you put yourself in a big business square box and being dictated to on brands and what you will have is no competition,” Rocky said.

Owner of Dogma in Cronulla, Phillip Burriel said he was hopeful for the future of Cronulla.

“Cronulla used to be a wonderful place to be, and it could be again,” he said.

“Cronulla boasts one of the most amazing communities I have ever had the privilege to be involved with. If the people of Cronulla want the mall and businesses to survive there is so much that can be done!,” he said.

She Street owner, Hayley Bowen, said the answer for the community was super simple.

‘Get off your phone and get into the businesses. Make shopping local a priority and if you have a good experience, let people know about them,” Phillip said.

“It’s so easy to leave a negative review but it’s also important to praise a small business when they do well.”

Phillip also asks the local community to actively support the local businesses in other ways.

“When the private companies are hired to put on the spring carnival, make sure you still support the local businesses.

Remember most of those stalls are taking money out of Cronulla,” he said.

“Support and invest in local businesses. The more we put back into these businesses the more vibrant and alive our community becomes,” Hayley said.

Rocky Pitarelli, owner of Caruso’s Italian Restaurant, said that if everyone in the Shire went to a local restaurant just once a week in the middle of the week, instead of ordering from a delivery service or buying ‘convenience’ foods from the supermarket, local businesses would flourish.

“You can actually save money by eating out every night of the week, with the special deals from local restaurants,” Rocky said.

“Plus, you are supporting local families when you support local businesses.”

“Write to the MP and express your concerns that there needs to be more management of the mall. Having 20 real estate agents move in the mall isn’t helping make the mall vibrant and appealing,” Phillip said.

“In all honesty, it all falls back to the larger community. At the end of the day, without customers patronising any venue be it retail, restaurants, pubs, clubs, whatever, we can’t survive.

Businesses need customers.”

“It’s up to the great people of Cronulla to do something together that will ensure the longevity of small businesses.”

Shire Talk always supports shopping locally in the wonderful community that we have and supports local businesses. Arnold Cohen, owner of Cronulla Surf Co, said there was much that could be done to make Cronulla into the vibrant mall it once was.

“The Mall was built in 1989 and looks very run down and definitely is in need of a revamp,” he said.

“We need to come up with innovative ideas to promote Cronulla as a beachside destination,” Arnold said.

He also suggested council could remove the no left turn into Cronulla Street, build a pedestrian bridge from the station to the mall, construct public toilets in the southern end of the mall, and construct the underground car park www.shiretalk.com.au below Monro Park, as was proposed in 1989.

“Small business gives our younger, next generation more training, and a formal understanding of the workforce than bigger corporate brands do. We give more to the community than clubs do in supporting our local schools, sports clubs, and charities,” Rocky said.

PARENTING CLASSES FOR EVERYONE

ransition to Parenthood, Mindful Birth and Baby Care Courses run by Julie Clarke, an independent childbirth and parenting educator, are helpful to anyone experiencing a pregnancy or who wants to care for a baby, such as grandparents.

Julie Clarke runs “Transition into Parenthood” courses for pregnant couples. It’s a modern day take on how to get ready, prepared and organised for the duration of the pregnancy, tips on having a quicker and easier birth and includes all the practicalities of how to look after a baby.

n the second Friday of every month, the Foodies and Farmers Markets are held at Parc Menai, in the heart of the Shire from 4-9pm. The markets are packed full of fun and food with no other markets in the Shire quite like it. You can come here to catch up with friends, spend time together as a family or have a date night, as there is something here for everyone.

“The New Mindful Hypnobirth” course is also by Julie Clarke. Couples are invited to attend the course from 25 weeks. “Yes, partners are totally included in all the sessions, unlike the old days when they were sidelined,” Julie said. Julie’s passion is for helping pregnant couples to transition into becoming a family and cares for both in the relationship.

Grandparents courses and a pram walking group for new mums are also in the program.

Hiring a Doula can help with having an easier birth and can provide a degree of comfort in the whole process that is much more personalised than can often be provided by overworked and harassed medical staff with many patients. Julie is proud to be part of Shire Rewards.

CRONULLA GOES PLASTIC FREE

S

ingle use plastic is very wasteful of the environment’s resources and people in Cronulla are doing something about it. Plastic Free Cronulla is an initiative by the Cronulla Chamber of Commerce to help businesses make the decision to go plastic free.

University student, Kal Glanznig, helped the Chamber develop their Plastic Free Cronulla initiative after being inspired during a holiday in Noosa after finishing year 12.

“Up in Noosa they have their own ‘Plastic Free Noosa’ initiative which really had an impact on me as I could see the positive impact, not only for the environment, but for the community,” he said.

“Together, we can make a real difference.”

Businesses that do not use the single use plastic items of straws, cutlery, plastic bags, take away containers and cups in Cronulla will be promoted as Plastic Free Champions.

“They’ll get a certificate showing they are Plastic Free Champions which they can display in their business. As a customer, you feel good knowing that the business is plastic free, and that by shopping there compared to somewhere else you are doing your bit to help the environment, so it’s a win for everyone,” Kal said.

While Plastic Free Champions are mostly targeted to food based businesses, all businesses in Cronulla can be promoted as ‘Plastic Free Warriors’, by making simple changes in their business practices. For example, an accountancy firm may use crockery and proper cutlery when having take away meals at the office for the staff, instead of using plastic ones.

“Even a simple change can make a big difference. Many businesses are doing this already, but we are hoping to encourage even more to go plastic free,” he said.

The Cronulla Spring Festival is going to be the first big public event that will be completely plastic free. “We will be working with other events over the summer to go plastic free too.

“We love that so many pieces can easily be dressed up or down simply by changing from heels to kicks,” she said.

“The best way to get bang for your buck in Spring is to invest in both a good faux leather and denim jacket. This way you can start to wear your summer dresses and tops, even if it’s not warm enough.”

Hayley said that spring was a great time to enjoy dressing in clothes that make you feel happy.

“After all the muted tones and heavier fabrics in Winter it’s finally time to break out the colour,” she said.

“Always in style are femme frocks with frilly fascinators or magnificent hats. If hats are not your thing, a fresh flower in a headband or fascinator is always perfect,” Roslyn said.

For other Spring Carnival days, colour is expected and this season the colours are bright and bold.

“Melbourne Cup Day is the day most Australians celebrate and fashion on that day is all about expressing yourself and having fun,” Audrey said.

“Be mindful that the wrong colour for your skin tone can dampen your look completely,” Roslyn said.

“To be very safe, go for pretty, soft florals matched with a strong colour splash. For example, you could wear soft floral pinks with a fuchsia hat, or team a gorgeous lemon lace dress with emerald green hat and shoes. A mint green dress with a row of burgundy flowers on a headband and burgundy sandals would be a beautiful look,” she said.

“Think prints, stripes and injecting some fun into your warmer weather wardrobe.”

Sutherland Shire based fashion designer, Audrey Attridge said fun was the theme this spring.

“Pretty floral skirts teamed with lovely tops are easy to dress up or down for any occasion. A top with a lace trim adds elegance to comfort,” Audrey said.

When dressing for the Spring Racing Carnival events, or dressy events, such as weddings this season, you’ll want to match elegance with fun style.

“Below the knee length dresses in bright, bold colours, with florals and prints will be on display this season, matched with co-ordinating fascinators if you are going to the races,” Audrey said.

“Save your classic black and white for Derby Day, where glamour and sophistication are the key elements,” she said.

Image and colour consultant, Roslyn Holden, agrees and has the following tips for Derby Day.

“For top to toe elegance, make one element of your outfit the feature and star of the show. It may be your hat, your hairstyle, the dress, or some amazing accessories. Design your colour palette to make sure the colours go together. Combining too many bold colours can fall flat, so go for pastels and use the bold to make the statement.”

Talking of top to toe elegance, take care when selecting your shoes for a race day, or a garden party. Audrey suggests leaving the stilettos at home.

“Reach for your thick heels and wedges, so you don’t sink into the grass,” she said.

“It’s a good idea to pop a light-weight silk scarf or wrap in your bag, because Spring days can come with a chill wind towards the end of the day,” Audrey suggested.

“When you look fabulous, you’ll feel fabulous and you’ll have fun,” she said.

Whether you are going to Spring Racing Carnival, or simply enjoying the lovely spring weather in the Shire, fashion this spring is about having fun. Spring into spring with beautiful florals, mixed patterns, and a splash of bold colour for the best fashion this season. .

“Black is a heavy option. Off-white with a splash of black is a way more flattering option, especially for mature women,” Roslyn said.

“Racing has enjoyed a long history of elegance and sophistication and decorum is the order of the day. Avoid too tight, revealing or skin baring numbers.

LOCAL AUTHOR HAS 3 BOOKS HONOURED

G

eorgie Donaghey is a Sutherland Shire based internationally published children’s author, who loves writing for children. She has three books, Lulu, Clover’s BIG Ideas, and In the Shadow of an Elephant now listed on the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

The NSW Premier challenges children from Kindergarten to Year 9 to read between 20 to 30 books between March and September each year. Supported by schools, the Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for pleasure to enable students to experience quality literature. To have three books on the list is an honour for any author.

Lulu, Georgie’s first book, released by Wombat Books, was conceived while waiting to visit a local primary school.

Clover’s Big Ideas and In the Shadow of an Elephant were published by Little Pink Dog Books. In the Shadow of an Elephant was honoured as a finalist in the 2019 International Book Awards and sent to reprint just three months after it was released in May this year.

“My ties in the Shire are steeped in a rich history. My greatgrandfather was a respected pioneer of the district, working with Sutherland Shire Council dating back to the early 1900s.

In 1918, he was instrumental in setting up a large emergency hospital during the influenza epidemic,” she said.

“I am delighted to continue the family tradition of helping others, by working with other authors and encouraging emerging authors on their journey to publication in children’s literature,” she said.

“I am a full-time working mother with three gorgeous kids, all at various stages of their life. I began writing from a young age, even winning an award in the Sunday Telegraph at the age of eight, for a poem about the dentist.”

“After the birth of my first child, I felt inspired to play with words again and began writing for children. For the past 20 years the children’s writing industry has been my home.

My shelves are beginning to fill with my published books and my computer is bulging with story ideas,” she said.

Georgie’s first steps in the world of children’s publishing were with the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) where she served as President for the Sutherland Shire Sub-branch for three years.

“It was during my time with the CBCA, I discovered there were many emerging children’s authors that needed a voice. They needed somewhere they could share their work, network with others and utilise tools and resources to assist them on their journey to publication.”

In 2011, as a commitment to help others and with the assistance of my husband, Creative Kids Tales was born. Now an industry recognised site, CKT has become a valuable resource for Australian emerging children’s authors.

For a few years, Georgie had a program on 2SSR The Author’s Shelf where she interviewed authors like Day Pikey, Jackie French, Graeme Evans, Andy Griffiths, Susanne Gervay, Kate Forsyth and many others.

“My first adult story was awarded second place and published in the 2014 Heat Anthology available on Amazon. In the same year, I was awarded third place in the CYA Competition Primary Picture Books category for I Like Dragonflies.”

Georgie has directed two sell out writers’ festivals in the Shire and is the publisher of The Creative Kids Tales Short Story Collection Volume 1 and 2. The second volume is called Things that Go Bump and Enchanted and is a flip book anthology of stories and poems for children from 36 authors and illustrators, six of whom are from the Sutherland Shire. Georgie has collated, edited and compiled the book with authors and illustrators through Creative Kids Tales and the book for children aged 5 to 13 will be released later this year. Is Your Child Ready for School In 2020?

I

f your child is born somewhere between January and July, then you’re one of the lucky ones that gets to choose which year they go to school. Will they be four turning five, or five turning six? If your child celebrates his or her birthday in the winter and spring months of August to December, then the decision is out of your hands, as children must start school in the year they turn six.

However, for those with summer or autumn babies, how do we know what the right thing to do is? It’s sometimes a tough decision for parents and it’s time to decide now, as schools are enrolling kindergarten children.

Ultimately, the decision lies with you, depending on what is best for your child. The following tips may help you to decide whether your child should start school in 2020 or 2021.

Being school ready is NOT about reading and writing Ask a kindergarten teacher what they expect from children entering school, and it will not be about whether they can recognise every letter of the alphabet, write it and be able to count.

True school readiness is about being socially and emotionally ready – will they cope with the everyday tasks?

Ask yourself: - Can my child sit at the table to complete an activity?

- Can my child make choices about the type of activity they wish to engage with?

- Can my child take care of themselves independently – toileting, washing hands, care of his or her own belongings?

- Is my child able to resolve conflict with peers? The teacher to student ratios in the playground are far greater than at daycare or preschool, meaning less adults per child. If your child has a problem, will they be able to work it out for themselves or will they always need adult support?

- Can my child ask for help if she or he needs to?

What will life be like in Year 7?

This is a valid concern, especially for those children who seem ready to go now or are very bright and wanting to be challenged mentally.

Every centre has a different philosophy, but it will be geared up to support your child’s development prior to attending school. Work out what your child needs from a school readiness program and how your child can be challenged.

Many people think about the present, whether their child is ready now for school, but don’t often consider the other end of the spectrum.

Starting school at four years old means your child will be 11 years old when they go to high school and could be attending with 13 year olds. It’s worth thinking about the differences between those two years, as well as when they finish school. A child who starts school at four can still be 17 for the first few months of university.

Will my child be bored?

The Early Years Learning Framework, the curriculum used at every daycare and preschool, lends itself to play based learning.

The educators use this to support your child’s learning and development as they get closer to going to school; so there is no opportunity to get bored.

Another way to challenge your child is by enrolling them in activities outside of daycare.

Drama, martial arts, dance and sports are great confidence boosters and give them an additional opportunity to practice their social and emotional skills.

Early childhood educators have a wealth of experience and have seen many children of all ages and stages go to school. They understand the capabilities of your child. Listen to what they have to say and their recommendations.

Whether you choose to send your child next year to school, or stay another year at home, preschool or daycare, it’s your decision. Make the decision that fits your child’s needs and growth and don’t worry about what other parents are deciding.

Speak to “big school” Check out their open day and speak to the teachers.

Take a tour with your child to see what school life is like. If there is no upcoming open day, make an appointment with the principal or kindergarten teacher for a tour.

They usually pay particular attention to the youngest students during orientation visits and can give you feedback on how your child coped.

eeting Margarita Adams in person it’s easy to see there is something special about what she does. Looking through her gallery on Instagram, it’s hard to believe she’s really only been taking her art seriously for the past year or so. Her urban art style has transformed from simple sketching to completed works that leaves the viewer with a thirst for more.

What makes her art even more attractive is the fact that she is a local, capturing the local scenes in her artwork. She takes a simple laneway and puts it on paper; her leather-bound books bursting with detail. From Surf Street, Cronulla to the graffiti trail of Caringbah; The Esplanade, Cronulla and building works in Woolooware; moments of time are forever preserved.

“I came to urban sketching, where you sketch on location, just over a year ago.

I had a real desire one New Years’ Eve to be creative again. As a child I was always quite peaceful and drew a lot, but I ended up in a demanding corporate role which dominated the next couple of decades. It really took away my desire and mental space to even want to be creative. But I knew colour was missing. I just followed that instinct,” Margarita said.

“It was a real turning point in my life because I remember the day, I just walked into an art shop and bought a watercolour set. I watched some YouTube tutorials and within 48 hours my life had literally changed. I’ve not stopped drawing since New Year’s Day 2018,” she said.

“By February I had joined the Sydney Sketch Club and taken part in a sketch crawl within the Sydney CBD. I absolutely fell in love with being outdoors and drawing our gorgeous city.

I met a lot of other likeminded people, from beginners to artists who had been published. It really started to open my mind to something that could be so much more.”

Margarita’s art is different and is dynamic, even in the way she creates her art.

“I’m not so keen on still life. I’m starting to be drawn to different subjects.

Up until about 6 or 7 months ago, I’d walk down an alley and be really attracted to the pipes and the bricks and the grit of the place, so I’ve been sitting in alleys and drawing. I enjoy incorporating people into it to make it more dynamic and add movement,” she said.

“I’ve had such a positive response from people which has really surprised me.

Now I’m not just someone who sits and paints, I’m someone who wants to share it with the world. It’s getting over the modesty as it’s a piece of you. It’s really pouring yourself into your work. I don’t do them half-heartedly.”

“I go straight in with pen. This is the first and final draft. I do it so I really pay attention and observe. It’s very committed and even a bit risky, but through mistakes, you can end up with something you’d never expect. That’s what is exciting about it.”

At first, Margarita was focused on discovering her tools of the trade.

“Now I’m starting to understand that I’m creating a language for my style.

For example, the cars aren’t the focal point of my drawing, but it adds to the stylist element of it,” she said.

“I have to finish each piece, because they bother me when they’re unfinished.

You get to a point when you’re done.

You just know. If I push it that bit more, I’m going to ruin it. If it looks good, and I’m happy with it, it’s a finished piece.”

Like many artists, Margarita has had to conquer her own demons and at first she felt uncomfortable when other people looked at her work.

SHARKS ENDURE TOUGH STRETCH IN RUN TOWARDS FINALS

ith the NRL Telstra Premiership reaching the business end of the season, the equation for many teams is quite simple – win and repeat. The Cronulla Sharks find themselves within a sliver of the top eight and have games against the Rabbitohs, Panthers, Dragons, Warriors, Raiders and Tigers to look forward to. The past six weeks have not gone according to plan for rookie coach John Morris and his men. The Sharks found themselves staring down the barrel of a sixth straight defeat before overcoming a desperate Cowboys outfit 16 points to 14.

Consistency has eluded the Sharks for much of the year, with a number of high-profile names unavailable at certain stages across the season. Wade Graham, Matt Moylan, Shaun Johnson and Andrew Fifita have all spend extended stints on the sidelines, forcing John Morris to test a mixture of combinations and partnerships. Young guns Briton Nikora and Bronson Xerri have made the most of the opportunities Morris has presented them. Nikora was awarded a maiden international cap for his native New Zealand and is in the Sharks’ top five for line breaks, tackle breaks, and offloads, whilst Xerri is in the competition’s top 20 for both tries and tackle breaks.
