Beginning life as a hobby 4 years ago, Shire Talk is fast becoming a recognised local brand. We understand what it is like as a small business starting out and want to help other local businesses on their start-up journey. As the central hub of The Shire, our aim is to give you a different point of view on all things local.

hen I was researching this, one of the parents I spoke to told me not to write about a particular park. I was concerned that he’d had a bad experience, that perhaps there were too many off the leash dogs playing around his small people, or that the distance to the nearest coffee shop was excessive. It was, in fact, the complete opposite - we love this park and if you tell people about it, we’ll lose our spot in the sunshine and it’ll get really busy!

We are so lucky to live in a part of Sydney that has so many beaches and parks to choose from. Sometimes we get the bonus of having both together instead of having to choose where we’d like to go. People (not from the Shire) often joke about needing a

passport to come and visit (because it’s oh so far away); well maybe they should because we are also incredibly blessed to enjoy a few pockets of happiness at our parks and maybe we would quite like to keep the secret to ourselves!

Pre baby, a park was a nice space to perhaps enjoy a picnic with a loved one, or to walk your dog through. Never did I think that I would be frequenting them a lot more as babies grew into toddlers and what sorts of conditions you stipulated on them. Of course, a fence is nice, but if it’s got its own cafe and indeed a direct link to your morning coffee fix or afternoon pick-me-up, then that might just trump whether your child can run away(!)

Okay, this is more of an essential, particularly if you’re toilet training. Good to suss it out, or perhaps bring your own potty!

The park is a great place for your child to experiment with taking risks and working out what they can do. Whilst they may be able to play independently on some equipment, others might need some adult help.

I’ve listed this as number one, but obviously it depends on how much you love your coffee! For catch ups with friends, most people will want (need) a cup so if the park is close to a café, even better. Don’t forget your keep cup!

Other things you might want to consider are: · Does it have a bike or scooter track? · Is it convenient for catch ups with your friends? · Is there a BBQ area? · Are dogs allowed if on lead? · Is there sand or bark under the equipment? · Are there shady areas?

Are you able to see your kids play from where you have set up, or do you need to keep moving? Are there any hidey holes or secluded areas?

This is a broad area and includes a lot of things, particularly if your child is a “runner” or an “explorer,” but the main items to consider are: - Is there a fence all the way around, or only part way?

- Is there a gate that can be locked?

- If not fenced, are there clear boundaries of where the

e’re all guilty of the age old “new year, new me” proclamation that’s followed by exactly one week of good choices (if we’re lucky) before the chocolate bar comes out or we’re spending too much time on the internet again.

Well, this year is going to be different! Here are 5 ways you can see your resolutions become reality.

1. Know your WHY A New Years Resolution will last only as long as you are motivated to act on it – and motivation fades fast unless you have a strong reason to keep going when things get hard. Your WHY should be personal to you, have a strong emotional affect and be something that inspires you to act.

Try it on - make a picture of it in your mind, know how it

feels and remind yourself of it often. There is a reason you made this resolution, live by it!

2. Pick the Carrot When it comes to motivation, we’re frequently driven by either the threat of being hit with a stick, or the pleasure of eating the carrot. When it comes to your resolution, choose to move TOWARD something and have that reflected in your resolution. No one likes to lose, so why do we say weight loss? Instead, try ‘peak fitness’, ‘healthy self’ or invent your own. Get creative and frame your goal in a positive light.

3. Know thine self We all have our strengths and weaknesses, so it’s important to understand our own limits and behaviours. No one knows you better than you, so be honest with yourself – are you going to get up 2 hours earlier EVERY DAY to read more?

Or eat organic EVERY meal? Ensure your goals are realistic and achievable – if you set yourself up for failure by biting off more than you can chew, you’re less likely to stick to your resolution. You’ll get far more joy (and longevity) out of sustainable small victories.

4. Don’t slash the tyres If you got a flat, would you then proceed to slash your other three tyres? Seems ridiculous, right? Exactly. If you fall off the bandwagon and lapse into your old ways, it’s just a flat tyre! Pull a spare one from the back, change it and keep going! One setback does not equal a loss. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep on driving. Remember, you either have excuses or results.

5. Act! You’ve recognised you need a change, you’re motivated to accomplish it…you’re ready! The best of intentions are great, but above all, we must act if we want to achieve change. If you’ve found yourself saying “I will when…” or waiting to be less busy/stressed/tired /etc, then this is your wake up call. There will never be a perfect moment, and no one else can do this for you. So, dear Shire Talkers: it’s time to take action!

Be the best version of yourself this year. Cherish small joys, be healthy, donate to charity, spend time with family – and stick to your resolution!

utherland Shire Council has announced the nominees for its Australia Day Awards.

Each year, the council recognises citizens in three award categories: Sutherland Shire Citizen, Young Citizen and Community Group.

Awards recognise citizens and organisations who volunteer their time and energy for community work, and strive to improve and support community services in the Shire.

Nominees are unsung heroes of the Shire community, who never tire of helping others.

Councillors present each award to the nominee who they feel has made the most outstanding contribution to the Shire community over the year. With the magnificent range of achievements this year’s nominees bring to the table, the judges certainly have a tough decision on their hands.

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony held in December and again at the Sutherland Shire Council Australia Day celebrations on 26 January 2019.

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR NOMINEES:
