COOPERATING PREP SCHOOLS FOR 2024-2025

13

Founded in 1944, the Naval Academy Athletic and Scholarship Programs (A&SP)—a division of the United States Naval Academy Foundation— encourages and supports athletic excellence at the Naval Academy. The program is responsible for grants and awards that recognize superiority in athletics and a comprehensive scholarship program to ensure that the Naval Academy has the best scholar-athletes in the nation.

MISSION

To provide leadership, need based funding, guidance and mentoring to all Foundation Preparatory School students, to provide needed private funding to all USNA varsity, club and intramural sports teams through The Fund for Athletic Excellence and to remain a highly respected organization in support of the Physical Mission of the U.S. Naval Academy.

2029 FOUNDATION PREP SCHOOL STUDENTS

17-23

This past year, the Foundation (A&SP) provided more than $4 million in direct support for all types of athletic activities at the Naval Academy. This includes extensive financial support to not only the 36 varsity teams, but also the many club and intramural teams as well as to the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, RI.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Through a need-based scholarship program, the Foundation, provides one year of post-high school education to qualified young men and women who need further academic preparation before they enter the Naval Academy. Thanks to the Foundation’s sponsorship, more than 4,000 motivated candidates with excellent leadership, scholastic and athletic potential have graduated from the Naval Academy since 1944. It is a “win-win” for the Naval Academy and for these outstanding candidates!

FROM THE CHAIRMAN Teammates—on behalf of the small but mighty team who work every day to deliver on our mission, we hope all of you enjoyed a joyous holiday season and look forward to another lap around the sun in ’26. After an incredible game in Baltimore last weekend, heart rate and blood pressure now returning to normal, ADM Bill Moran ’81, USN (Ret.) it’s time to reflect on a great year. In what seemed like an extension of last year’s take down of a highly favored Army team at Northwest Stadium, here we are with 2025 in the books for Navy Athletics, the Naval Academy and A&SP—where has time gone? This year marked several significant milestones. We celebrated 250 years of the Navy and Marine Corps, which included historic soccer matches with Army men’s and women’s soccer teams in Philadelphia on Founders Day—10 October—where we rung in 180 years of the Naval Academy. Our football team followed up that great competition with a thrilling win over Temple at Lincoln Financial Field, a win that propelled us to a national ranking in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Just as noteworthy, 2025 marked another year of changes off the field. Despite a debilitating government shutdown and almost total leadership turnover, the Naval Academy continued “on course and speed” in the pursuit of excellence. We welcomed in our fourth Superintendent in four years, Navy Football Brotherhood alum Lieutenant General Michael Borgschulte ’91, USMC. We also welcomed our new Athletic Director, Michael Kelly, who quickly started his first year as the AD with a strong relationship with all of us at A&SP and the Alumni Association & Foundation. His support of coaches, teams and athletes has excited an alumni base that was already motivated by the margin of excellence mantra of his predecessor. We bid farewell to Chet Gladchuk after a remarkable run at the helm of NAAA where he propelled Navy Athletics to amazing heights of sustained support and growth. For his 24 years of dedicated service to Navy, Chet was presented with the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award—the Department of the Navy’s highest civilian honor in early November. Chet helped raise more than $225 million while strengthening the partnership between Navy Athletics and the Alumni Association & Foundation. As proud as we are of the wins and rankings, what matters most is the impact these young men and women make off the field. Today’s Naval Academy athletes are scholars, community servants and leaders in the making. They represent the very best of what the Academy stands for. The seniors of the Class of 2026 received their service assignments just a few weeks ago, and this time next year, many of them will be at TBS, at sea, in Nuke Power School or in Pensacola—preparing to join the fight wherever it takes them.

They are ready. They are prepared. And they represent the best the nation has to offer. In the Fleet today, they are certainly making a difference. Of the 11 operational aircraft carriers … only one doesn’t have a USNA alum serving as the CO or XO. Think about that. These are 11 of our most prized capital assets. On four of those carriers, both the CO and XO are alums. As the saying goes, when a scuffle breaks out around the globe, “Where’s the nearest carrier?” Essentially, what should be asked is “Where’s the nearest Naval Academy grad?” The deployed Nimitz Strike Group boasts alums as the Strike Group Commander, Carrier Air Wing Commander and DESRON XO. Three of the four small boy skippers are USNA alums. In the Air Wing, four of the nine squadrons boast grads as CO or XO. Both VFA 146 and HSC 6 have both the CO and XO as alums. Of the seven Marine Expeditionary Units (MEUs) globally, four of them are commanded by alumni, including the 22nd MEU, currently deployed on Iwo Jima ARG in the SOUTHCOM AOR. And while there are not as many Naval Academy alumni currently serving as Marine Corps officers due to the prevalence of PLC and ROTC commissions, the same theme applies. From the commanding general of Parris Island to the O-6 in charge of TBS at Quantico and in the deployed Marine units around the world, our alumni are in front and in charge. Long story short, Naval Academy alums are making a difference and achieving the highest levels of command. We are—with our support and philanthropy—doing our jobs. Our alums are in command and making us proud. Against that backdrop of alumni impact in the Fleet, trustees enjoyed a record-breaking fundraising year eclipsing the $6 million dollar level. The demands for our support will only grow as we continue to elevate the Academy’s mission. We’re also closing in on our $20 million fundraising goal for the Legacy Fund—and we need to hit the finish line. We will. Thank you!! In August, we were proud to announce a landmark $10 million commitment from Bruce Lakefield ’67 and his wife, Bernadine, in support of the continued development of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. This generous gift will fund the design, construction and long-term operation of a new pavilion in the stadium’s north end zone. Chet and Michael worked together very closely to deliver this transformational gift. We look to 2026 with some other big priorities. We are charging headlong into building a new lacrosse facility on the yard … and across the river we look forward to A&SP Trustee Jim Kelly ’77’s new 19th hole venue to open at the golf course in the spring. Next year, there will be more impactful philanthropic gifts to announce. There will be more amazing Foundation School students to welcome into the fold. And more amazing leaders will hit the Fleet and Marine Corps because of our support.

3

To wrap it up, please reflect on our two core missions: 1) to create opportunities for talented students to receive an additional year of preparation for USNA at one of our now-16 affiliated prep schools through need-based scholarships, and 2) to provide financial support for the USNA’s physical mission. Your passion, dedication and philanthropy are major reasons why the Academy remains the nation’s premier leadership development institution. And your contributions to athletics highlight the power of philanthropy in providing the MARGIN OF EXCELLENCE to USNA.

Thank you for your service in this regard and may you and yours enjoy the happiest of holidays and a healthy 2026. GO NAVY!!

A&SP Chairman ADM Bill Moran ’81, USN (Ret.), and A&SP Executive Director CAPT Don Hughes ’88, USN (Ret.), attend the 2025 Army-Navy football game at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD, on 13 December.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR “Excellence is not a skill, it’s an attitude.”—Ralph Marston As we reflect on another remarkable year for the Athletic & Scholarship Programs (A&SP), this quote resonates deeply. Our mission remains steadfast: to support the physical development and academic readiness of future Naval CAPT Don Hughes ’88, USN (Ret.) leaders. Once again, our trustees, alumni, parents, and friends have risen to the occasion with unwavering commitment and generosity. As a reminder, our A&SP Mission: “To provide leadership, need-based funding, guidance and mentoring to all Foundation Preparatory School students, to provide needed private funding to all USNA varsity, club and intramural sports teams through The Fund for Athletic Excellence and to remain a highly respected organization in support of the Physical Mission of the United States Naval Academy.” The Naval Academy has a unique clarity of purpose, expressed in their mission: “To develop Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.” Our A&SP mission complements those lofty ideals of the Naval Academy, who have been training midshipmen for more than 180 years! In a previous edition of our A&SP Newsletter, I quoted Bo Schembechler when he said, “every day you either get better or you get worse. You never stay the same.” Well Bo, I’m here to tell you we continue to get better and are not showing signs of slowing down anytime soon! We continue to provide opportunities to qualified young men and women to attend and graduate from “The” premiere Service Academy. Our Foundation scholars are leaders in the hall, in the classroom, and on our playing fields. Our team of Athletic & Scholarship Programs trustees (both active and Emeritus) lead the way in supporting the physical mission resulting in another record-breaking fundraising year. Additionally, our trustees not only support Navy sports, but they also support every aspect of life at the Naval Academy. They set the standard in giving of their time, talent, and treasure in support of our Naval Academy. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS We all know change is constant and we have experienced some significant changes with our affiliated prep schools in the last year. In January we were notified that our partner since 1961, Northwestern Prep, would be closing its doors. We will certainly miss Suzanne and Dan Durbeck and know that they have had a positive and lasting impact on thousands of young men and

women with a dream of attending a service academy. They helped dreams come true and we wish them only the best in this next adventure of their lives. When one door closes, another one opens. That was the case for us as we partnered with IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL and we hope to have IMG represented with the Class of 2031. The Foundation-sponsored USNA Class of 2029 prep students took the oath at I-Day, finished Plebe summer, attended Plebe Parents Weekend, and are nearing the end of their first semester at the Naval Academy. We had 45 students (30 men and 15 women) enrolled across 12 of our prep schools, including representation from 21 states and Puerto Rico. We continue to see impressive matriculation rates, with our students consistently outperforming expectations. Unfortunately, we had two students who were disqualified due to medical issues, one of which is back in our program with the Class of 2030. The Class of 2029 Foundation students achieved a 95.6% appointment rate. Their commitment, enthusiasm, and drive were inspiring and I’m confident they will be successful in their future endeavors. As their Blue and Gold officer, I’ve had the privilege of helping them along the way and was fortunate to visit each school and witness firsthand their growth and determination. As is our tradition, we welcomed our scholars to Annapolis along with their families for our annual Ice Cream Social. They got to hear firsthand from our Supe, Vice Admiral Yvette Davids ’91, USN, the USNA AA&F President and CEO, Jeff Webb ’95, and our A&SP Chair, ADM Bill Moran ’81, USN (Ret.), on what it takes to be successful at the Naval Academy. I’m confident these speakers helped to put everyone at ease and our Foundation students will make themselves proud in the coming years! The Class of 2030 scholars are fully immersed in their prep experience at 12 of our partner schools. We have 43 students (26 men and 17 women), and they hail from 19 different states as well as Greece, Taiwan, the Virgin Islands, and Spain! 23 of our 43 students are attending one of our four military prep schools and we have 17 recruited athletes for 13 different sports. Our students are encouraged to take advantage of the resources at their disposal to help them to navigate the process, improve their study habits, and manage their time wisely to better ensure they are prepared for the Naval Academy’s rigorous academics. For every one of our A&SP Foundation scholars, their resilience, maturity, and commitment to service are a testament to the value of the prep year and the strength of our program. PHYSICAL MISSION SUPPORT I’m happy to report that we had super turnouts for our Spring and Fall 2025 Trustee meetings, lunches, and dinners! Many of our Trustees and their spouses attended these events and it occurred to me that these opportunities to gather and enjoy each other’s company are fleeting, and the shared comradery helps to remind us why we love and support the Naval Academy. We have 250 active trustees and 88 emeritus trustees who support 5

the physical mission at the Naval Academy. We partner with our teammates at the Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA), Tim Ford, Kala Giddish, Maeve Hall, Rob Friedrich, Berit Brookfield, and Caitlin Kane to provide critical support through The Fund for Athletic Excellence. We had another outstanding and successful year, and an important part of our mission is the funding we provide in support of the USNA physical mission. This year marked a historic milestone: the Fund for Athletic Excellence surpassed the $6 million mark for the first time. These unrestricted funds continue to serve as the Margin of Excellence, empowering Navy Athletics to compete at the highest levels. Athletics is fundamental in helping shape our midshipmen as it allows them to confront challenges, experience the thrill of competing, and the joy and agony of victory and defeat. This is our why...A&SP supports our students and the Margin of Excellence, giving the Naval Academy an edge when it comes to remaining a competitive university in academics and athletics. More than 30% of our students compete in varsity athletics, with even more participating in club and intramural sports. Chet Gladchuk tenure as the Naval Academy’s Athletic Director will be remembered as a transformative period in the institution’s athletic history. Through his visionary leadership, he not only elevated Navy Athletics but also fostered a culture of excellence that extended far beyond the playing fields, leaving an indelible mark on the entire Academy. Since taking on the role in 2001, Chet has been a driving force behind the modernization and enhancement of Navy’s athletic facilities, ensuring that midshipmen have access to world-class resources. His unwavering commitment to the student-athlete experience has helped Navy remain competitive at the highest levels while reinforcing the values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance that define the Academy. Chet’s mantra of “EXPECT TO WIN” exemplifies what it means to be an athlete at the Naval Academy! As Chet Gladchuk steps away from his role, he leaves behind an enduring legacy. The Athletic & Scholarship Programs and the extended family of midshipmen, alumni and supporters owe him a profound debt of gratitude. Fair winds and following seas! After a decade of dominance and Navy winning the Patriot League President’s Cup for ten straight years ... l’m dismayed to report that Army West Point claimed the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, during the 2024-25 academic year. Congrats to the Black Knights. However, from 1969-70 to 2024-25, Navy has posted a record of 48-6-2 in the annual Star Series and I’m confident we will be back in our accustomed spot! Check out what our midshipmen, coaches, and teams accomplished this past year. • 42 All-Americans—Most in school history • 5 Academic All-Americans • 2 Patriot League Scholar Athletes of the Year • 15 National/Conference Coach of the Year awards • 18 National/Conference Athlete of the Year • 5 Conference Rookie of the Year Awards • 12 Conference Championships 6

• National Championship—Squash (U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles Championship) These amazing achievements reflect the dedication of our athletes, coaches, and supporters—and the impact of our collective efforts. Every year, we honor the outstanding coaches who continually exemplify leadership and excellence. One of the keys to Navy’s athletic success has been the hiring of some of the best coaches in the country. These coaches understand what it takes to be a student athlete and the many demands on midshipmen’s time. With that in mind, they get the most out of the available time and the results continue to be impressive. Our honorees all BEAT Army during the past year! This year’s Coach of the Year recipients are: • Winter—Bill Roberts, Men’s Swimming & Diving • Fall—Brian Newberry, Football • Spring—Keith Puryear, Women’s Tennis Each coach received a commemorative award, a monetary award, and our heartfelt appreciation for their ongoing contributions to the development of our Midshipmen. BRAVO ZULU AND THANK YOU! Teamwork and gratitude are central themes in this article, and I appreciate the dedication of my colleagues. Tracey Cook and Mariola Baker consistently demonstrate lofty standards of excellence and customer service. Our teammates in the Alumni Association (Communications & Events), the Foundation, Treasury, and Human Resources contribute significantly to the efficient operations at the Flugel Alumni Center. Additionally, our NAAA partners excel in managing athletic excellence donor relationships and enhancing our outreach. It is important to acknowledge the support and leadership provided by our A&SP Chair, Admiral Bill Moran ’81, and our USNAAAF President and CEO, Jeff Webb ’95, whose strategic guidance is invaluable. We also recognize the vital contributions of our Trustees, alumni, and friends who generously share their time, expertise, and resources, helping to ensure the strength and impact of our programs. LOOKING AHEAD As we move forward, we remain committed to our mission and to the young men and women who will one day lead our Navy and Marine Corps. We invite you to stay engaged, ask questions, and continue to support this one-of-a-kind organization. Please reach out to us at http://www.usna.com/asp, call or email, or visit us at the Fluegel Alumni Center in Annapolis. We welcome your involvement and look forward to another year of excellence. GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!

GLADCHUK HONORED WITH NAVY DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD With more than two decades of visionary leadership, former Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) Director Chet Gladchuk was presented with the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award—the highest recognition that the Secretary of the Navy may pay to a civilian not employed by the Department of the Navy—during the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation’s bi-annual board meeting at the Fluegel Alumni Center in Annapolis on 6 November. The award recognizes civilians for outstanding service of substantial and long-term benefit to the Navy, Marine Corps or Department of the Navy as a whole. Originally a certificate with a lapel pin, the medal was first presented in July 1951. For more than 70 years, this award has been reserved for those whose service has made a lasting national impact on the readiness and success of the naval force. U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) Superintendent Lieutenant General Michael J. Borgschulte ’91, USMC, presented the award to Gladchuk before the assembled Naval Academy Foundation Board of Directors. A primary objective for Gladchuk in his 24 years at Navy was energizing fundraising for the USNA physical mission and supporting the Foundation’s efforts to provide philanthropic support to the Academy. Gladchuk said the honor represents a career defined not just by championships, wins or facilities, but rather by the people. “I never looked at it as football or basketball or baseball or squash,” he reflected. “I always looked at it as a midshipman needing every opportunity to succeed—to have all the resources he or she needed to succeed. So, you put them in the best position to expect to win. And expect to win was always about just being prepared to win.” Under Gladchuck’s leadership, Navy experienced a transformation, placing it among the most respected collegiate athletic programs in the United States. He helped raise more than $225 million for Navy Athletics, championed facility upgrades across nearly every sport and strengthened the partnership between the Naval Academy Athletic Association and the Alumni Association & Foundation (USNA AA&F), leading and guiding in an era of unprecedented support for the Academy’s physical mission. “Chet built an athletic program that is the envy of every Division I school in the country,” said Ron Terwilliger ’63, chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. “Chet understood the valuable purpose of athletics at Navy—to prepare student-athletes as leaders in the Navy and Marine Corps. He knew the discipline instilled in our athletes in battles won on the playing fields of Annapolis, West Point and Colorado Springs would help prepare our future military leaders to excel and win on the battlefield.” In his remarks to board leadership, Gladchuk reflected on a personal philosophy that athletics is not separate from leadership development, but rather essential to it. 8

U.S. Naval Academy Superintendent LtGen Michael Borgschulte ’91, USMC, presents former Navy Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award. Gladchuk was recognized for his 24-years of service to the Naval Academy.

“All those leadership qualities that come with competition— the teamwork, the perseverance, the determination—all that is part of the physical mission package that’s so important to the success of our midshipmen as we prepare them for the fleet,” Gladchuk said. “Everything is equitably important. The academic and military dimensions are critical, but the physical mission is integral to developing leaders and preparing them for the future.” After a standing ovation Jeff Webb ’95, president and CEO of USNA AA&F, reflected on Gladchuk’s partnership and mentorship. “I just could not have asked for a better partner,” Webb said. “I have learned so much from just observing you. You’ve trained me, whether you know it or not. To learn from a master has been an absolute honor and privilege.” For Gladchuk, the day was one of gratitude as he surveyed the room filled with not just colleagues but friends. “What I remember the most are the incredible friendships, the relationships, and the trust so many people had in our [NAAA] direction—where we were headed and what we were trying to accomplish,” he said. “I’m glad we were able to deliver on a lot of different fronts because we’ve got some wonderful young men and women that need your support. For that, I’ll always be grateful.” With 24 years of dedication, vision and an unwavering belief in the power of athletics to shape tomorrow’s Navy and Marine Corps leaders of character, Gladchuck’s legacy has become inseparable from the story of the Naval Academy itself. His influence will continue to resonate in every midshipman who learns to compete with integrity, prepare with purpose and— as he said it best—expect to win.

PREP SCHOOL IN THE SPOTLIGHT MARION MILITARY INSTITUTE (MMI) Marion Military Institute (MMI), the nation’s oldest military junior college, was founded in Marion, AL, in 1842 as Howard College by the Alabama Baptist Convention. It was modeled after Eton College in England. During the Civil War, the campus’ Chapel and Lovelace Hall barracks, both still in use today, operated as Breckenridge Military Hospital, treating both Union and Confederate soldiers. Lovelace Hall then housed freed slaves, several of whom, in 1867, founded one of the earliest HBCUs that later became Alabama State University. Marion native Coretta Scott King attended this college. In 1871 the college instituted a military model. In 1887 Marion Military Institute was formally established when Howard College split with one half of professors and students moving to Birmingham to establish what became Samford University. The other half remained in Marion as MMI under the leadership of then-President Colonel James T. Murfee. The newly formed MMI adopted an educational model focused on intellectual, leadership and character development embedded within an environment that stressed military standards and ideals. In 1910, MMI’s Service Academy Program (SAP) began with the establishment of partnerships with Annapolis and West Point to prepare cadets for the rigors of both Service Academies. MMI has since expanded its SAP partnership resulting in thousands of appointments to all five Service Academies, including 1,247 total appointments, with 108 USNA appointments since 2010 alone. In 2006, MMI joined the Alabama Community College System, phasing out its high school and transitioning to a state institution. Today, MMI is a two-year Military Junior College providing a 100% fully residential and fully immersive military and Corps of Cadet experience. Both closely resemble the Naval Academy’s and Brigade of Midshipmen’s experience. MMI’s Corps of Cadets is a diverse student body sharing a common experience defined by the challenge of MMI’s demanding college

academics, integrated with the leadership and character development program. MMI’s close campus community provides for small classrooms, personalized attention and nearly 100% full-time faculty, all focused on student success. MMI’s whole-person education model supports each cadet’s intellectual, leadership, moral, social and physical development. MMI also offers various extra-curricular opportunities through its nine NCJAA inter-collegiate sports, companylevel intramurals, as well as cadet-led clubs specializing in aviation, leadership, math, ethics and small unit tactics. MMI offers its cadets special experiences and training with its military band, honor guard, precision drill team, firefighting college, EMT and law enforcement training. With 180 years of history, MMI continues to advance and modernize with barracks renovations, a new 500-seat dining facility and a new math and science building that will support STEM course expansion for basic engineering, cyber, IT and health sciences. Inspired by its motto of “Truth, Honor, Service,” MMI produces cadets who are highly educated and hold advanced leadership skills. Interwoven with all of their experiences at Marion, cadets develop character. The result has been borne out by high student success rates, favorable appointment outcomes and the 220 admirals and generals that began their professional military development at MMI.

A LETTER OF THANKS

5/27/2025

Dear Dr. Re P. McClung, My name is Molly Castellanos, and I have had the wonderful opportunity of attending Mercersburg Academy as the Major Megan M. McClung ‘95 USNA (USMC) Scholar, an award made possible by your extraordinary generosity. I will swear my oath on I-Day as a member of the United States Naval Academy Class of 2029, and I could not be more grateful for the chance you have given me to make this dream a reality. I had an amazing year at Mercersburg Academy. Going into the year, I was very nervous about making new friends and being away from home, but I quickly adjusted and made the best of my time there. Throughout the year, I encountered many challenges that I had to work hard to overcome. For one, the academics were hard, but I put my head down and was able to get all A’s in my classes. I’m grateful that I had this year to adjust to all of the rigors I’ll be facing at the Academy because I definitely would have been overwhelmed had I gotten in directly out of high school. Because of this year, I am going into the Academy feeling the most prepared I have been, and I owe that to my year at Mercersburg Academy. Since I was in middle school, my dream had always been to go to the Naval Academy. I was fortunate enough to experience my brother’s time at the Academy, so I have been able to see what it really takes to be able to be successful there. My decision to join the military was heavily influenced by my grandfather, who fought in the Korean War. His bravery and willingness to serve influenced me to do the same. At the Academy, I hope to major in Foreign Area Studies and to join the rowing team. I also plan on commissioning as an EOD officer. Once again, thank you so much for your support. It means a lot to those of us navigating the prep school year to know that there is someone besides our families supporting us. I hope we will have the opportunity to meet at some point in the future so I may thank you in person.

Sincerely, Molly Castellanos
