Plebe Summer prepares incoming midshipmen for the rigors of the Naval Academy

YARD WORK

They sweat. They march. They memorize.

Plebe Summer is a seven-week blitz designed to prepare incoming midshipmen for the rigors of the Naval Academy and eventually to lead others. The Class of 2025 faces the same gauntlet of mettle-testing tasks as their predecessors. These include individual challenges such as knowing the facts found in Reef Points or bouts in the boxing ring. They’re also placed in scenarios that stress the importance of collaboration and teamwork.

Lifelong bonds are forged during Plebe Summer. Camaraderie is built as plebes perform drills during the hot and humid Annapolis summer. Their ability to adapt and perform under pressure is tested during damage control drills.

Strategy, strength and teamwork are required to navigate obstacles and squad combat drills. Sea knowledge and competence is strengthened during sailing lessons on the Severn River. Plebes also begin mastery of synchronized precision with formal parade marches.

The photos on the following pages reflect the challenges plebes face. More photos of Plebe Summer can be found in the Naval Academy Alumni Association’s photo program’s Plebe summer gallery at www.usna.com/photoprogram. All Alumni Association members have full access to the photo galleries.
