Who should study this course?
The BTEC Information Technology course is designed for learners who wish to study the creation of IT systems to manage and share information, alongside the opportunity to practise and refine practical skills. The topics covered are extremely relevant in the modern business world, including the development of Information Management systems as well digital content creation and management of social media campaigns.
Entry requirements
Having studied Computer Science GCSE will be an advantage in terms of understanding, however pupils with good GCSEs in a range of subjects (grades 6+) will find the course accessible and interesting. It is worth noting that there is a technical element to this course, as well as two written coursework units, so a ‘technical’ mind and a good command of English would be advantageous.
What will I be studying?
The course looks at the use of Information Systems in terms of the physical, software and people-related aspects of each system. There are four units; the first three units are compulsory, with the fourth unit being an option. Units are: • Information Technology Systems • Creating Systems to Manage Information • Using Social Media in Business • Website Development
How will I be assessed?
Pupils will be assessed using a mixture of written exams, practical exams and written assignments covering their knowledge and understanding of the fundamental elements of Information Technology. Unit 1 is a synoptic exam paper sat in January of the second year of study. Unit 2 is a practical database-creation task completed over 5x 2-hour sessions on a given scenario in May/June of the first year of study. The other three units are assignment-based making use of case studies and project work.
What next?
This qualification carries UCAS points and is equivalent in size and points to one A Level. The qualification supports entry to a large range of further education courses, for example: • HND in Business • BA (Hons) in Computer Arts • BSc (Hons) in Fashion Buying Management • BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance
It also enables learners to develop knowledge and skills needed for entry-level roles related to IT, including vocational apprenticeship roles and trainee/entry-level roles such as a social media specialist, web/content developer or business analyst.
