The Cambridge National qualification in Creative iMedia is a course focused on using IT for digital media and web development, equipping pupils with the relevant skills to succeed in today’s online world. Creative iMedia provides an ideal progression from the Digital Literacy programme taught in Years 7 to 9, further developing pupils’ knowledge and skills in various aspects of digital creativity.
Course Overview
The Creative iMedia course consists of four, equally-weighted, units, one of which is assessed as a written exam whilst the other three are assessed internally through the completion of coursework projects.
The four units of study are: Pre-production skills: this unit covers the techniques used within professional digital media agencies to plan and prepare for projects, including the production of visualisations, mood boards, storyboards and effective project management. This unit is assessed by pupils taking a 1 hour 15 minutes written exam.
Creating digital graphics: this unit teaches pupils the practical techniques and analytical skills required to create digital graphics to meet a client brief. They will create digital graphics using a combination of their own creations and re-purposing existing digital source materials. This unit is assessed internally through the production of coursework.
Creating a multi-page website: this unit will enable pupils to understand the basics of creating websites. Pupils will demonstrate their creativity by combining components to create a functional, intuitive and aesthetically pleasing website. This unit is assessed internally through the production of coursework.
Creating interactive multimedia products: this unit teaches pupils the skills required to produce interactive multimedia experiences, such as those found at museum or shop kiosks, online learning systems and even phone applications. Pupils will produce an interactive multimedia product that meets their client’s requirements. This unit is assessed internally through the production of coursework.
Pupils will learn in a “hands-on” fashion throughout all units of study, with a focus on developing their digital skills in software applications such as digital graphics packages and web-design tools.
Assessment Details
Students will take the written exam at the end of Year 10, in addition they will complete and submit their graphics controlled assessment that year. In Year 11 they will complete the other two assessed units.
