SPRING 2018

This Is Me...

… is a Shine group for anyone between the ages of 11 and 18 who has Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus.

The Getting Out And About Issue

Angela says Hi!

Spring is nearly here, the evenings are getting lighter and hopefully the weather is getting warmer! It’s time to start thinking about getting out and about and making some plans for the year. You could maybe keep a notebook (or use your phone) to write down a list of things you would like to achieve or places you would like to visit this year. These could be day to day things such as remembering to take your medication or making sure you always have your shunt alert card with you (see how to order one later in the newsletter) to planning a day out with friends, taking up a new sport or hobby or going to a concert for the first time. We would love to hear about your plans and especially if you find disability friendly and accessible places to visit. Angela Bailey Support & Development Worker and This Is Me Facilitator

Photography Competition We are holding a This Is Me photo competition and there are two categories for you to choose from: “My Pet” or “Nature in the Spring”. There will be a prize for each category. One is a fantastic Fire 7 tablet, very kindly donated by John Lewis, and the other one is a mystery prize (winners and prizes to be announced in the next issue). Photos can be taken with a camera or any mobile device and e-mailed to marketingdesign@shinecharity.org.uk or posted to Shine Photo Competition, 42 Park Road Peterborough PE1 2UQ. Make sure you add your name, age and which category you are entering. The closing date is 15th March 2018. (PS Yes, if you take your pet outdoors you can enter both categories, and if you don’t have a pet you can borrow someone else’s with their permission - but please give it back afterwards!)

Shunt Alert card reminder

In the Spotlight Tyler Browning

Hi my name’s Tyler and I have spina bifida and hydrocephalus. I’m 13 and I go to Manor Green College in Crawley, West Sussex. I have 2 older brothers and 1 younger brother and a sister. I enjoy bowling, going to the cinema, laser quest, going out for meals, meeting up with friends and even occasionally rock climbing!

Don’t forget that if you have hydrocephalus, and a shunt, to carry your shunt alert card with you at all times If you don’t have a shunt card you can order one by phoning 01733 555988 or email firstcontact@shinecharity.org.uk or order via the Shine website www.shinecharity.org.uk/ hydrocephalus/taking-care-ofyourself/shuntalertcards

Be Smart on the Internet

The Internet can be great - so much to do, find and connect with - but it has its risks too, so here are some tips to help you stay smart and safe...

Keep safe by being careful not to give out personal information when chatting or posting online. Personal information includes your email address, phone number and password.

Meeting someone you have only been in touch with online can be dangerous. Only do so with your parents’ or carers’ permission and even then only when they can be present. Remember online friends are still strangers even if you have been talking to them for a long time.

Calling all TIMers!

Accepting emails, IM messages, or opening files, pictures or texts from people you don’t know or trust can lead to problems – they may contain viruses or nasty messages!

Would you like to be part of the TIM Facebook group? It’s a closed group for anyone age 13-17 who has spina bifida or hydrocephalus. The Facebook link is www. facebook.com/groups/Shine. ThisIsME and click the Join Group button. (It may take a little while to confirm as we have to check our records before accepting new members.)

Someone online might lie about who they are, and information on the internet may not be true. Always check information with other websites, books or someone who knows.

Tell your parent, carer or a trusted adult if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable or worried, or if you or someone you know is being bullied online.

Sunshine Walk and Wheel

Virtual Challenge

The SunShine Walk will be taking place in the Summer for Shine members, friends and families to take part in. Events will be taking place across Northern Ireland, Wales and England, involving a sponsored walk/wheel followed by a picnic. (You knew there’d be food involved somewhere!)

You can run it, walk it, push it, bus it, swim it or cycle it!

Contact georgia.kelly@shinecharity.org.uk or 01733 421333 to get involved, and if you are inspired by our photo competition, you can carry on building your portfolio by taking photos along the way!

Set yourself a personal challenge to be proud of by signing up to our Virtual Challenge and raise money for Shine at the same time. The choice is yours: choose your distance, pace, venue and when it takes place (anytime in June). Whether it’s a walk around your local park, a bus/car journey to visit a friend, or swimming the distance of the Channel in your local swimming pool over a month - it all counts towards your target. You can also choose what type of ‘transport’ you will use; wheelchair, power chair, swim, cycle, walk or even public transport! Contact georgia.kelly@shinecharity. org.uk to get involved.

More Fantastic Fundraising!

Easter Chocolate Tombola!

Winter dot-to-dot

How about inviting your school to run a tombola in aid of Shine? Teachers, Students, Friends and family donate chocolate prizes. Then - for 50p a go - pick a number ending in 0 or 5 and that matches a prize and enjoy gobbling it up! (Or sharing it of course!) Check that your parents/guardian are happy to liaise with your school and with Charlotte here on 01733 421328 or charlotte.griggs@shinecharity.org.uk for more.

Can you join the 120 dots below, in number order, to find out who’s in this wintry scene?

Now, if you feel you have indulged in a bit too much chocolate, you could get involved in the exciting challenges in the summer (see inside this issue) to burn off those calories!
