2016 Shimano Surfcasting Challenge

Shimano Surfcasting Challenge 2016 was successfully held on Sunday, 6th November 2016 at Pantai Puteri in Melaka. The challenge, organized by Wak Jali Fishing Event Management and supported by Shimano and OFT Pancing Sdn Bhd is one of the most popular fishing events in Malaysia and is well known for its electrifying atmosphere among surfcasters.

Among them were some competitors from Singapore and a few from as far as Indonesia.

A long queue formed early in the morning at the registration counter as participants registered their attendance and were all eager to start the day at their “special” fishing spot along the beach.

As the competition progressed, the skies soon cleared up and the sun came out. Under the sun’s ray, you could see hundreds of lines running along the coastline as anglers waited to land that prized catch that could win them the competition’s top prize.

Everyone present was all raring to go despite the light drizzle that started before dawn. As soon as the sound of the air-horn blasted through the air, anglers began casting their lines into the sea.

Besides the activities along the shoreline, there were also food vendors and a Shimano booth organized

by Syarikat Perniagaan Mee Fah, an authorized dealer of Shimano in Melaka.

Anglers had a chance to view the latest range of surfcasting products such as the Saragosa SW reel, Speedcast reel and various Surfcast rods which were all put on display at the booth. On top of being able to try out the latest products, purchases on displayed items were also entitled to a 30% event discount.

Suddenly, there was a burst of excitement near the organizer’s tent as everyone crowded round to see what the commotion was all about. Joe Nazri, an angler from Pekan Pahang had felt a tug on his line and began fighting a large fish on the other end of the line.

Shouts of encouragement could be heard from among the crowd as he fought the fish and when he finally reeled in a 15.3kg stingray, the crowd erupted into cheers.

As the competition drew to a close with the sound of the air-horn, participants began to bring in their reels as event marshals weighed and tabulated the results.

The Shimano booths, which showcased a full range of surf cast rods and reels, drew quite a bit of audience later in the day. Most of the surfcasters were extremely excited to experience the latest Shimano Surf Game rods and reels in their hands.

A lucky draw was conducted while waiting for the competition results to be tabulated and announced and many participants found themselves going home with either a brand new rod or a brand new reel.

When the time came for results to be announced, a large crowd gathered in front of the stage, all eager to find out if their catch had won them the top prize.

Team MKFT1 came in third with their 4kg stingray while seasoned surfcaster, Faizal Power2 took the second prize with a 5.66kg stingray.

Joe Nazri, with his 15.3kg stingray was assured of the top prize which comprised of a cash prize of RM 35,000, a PA Fliegen reel and a Speedcast 450BXG surfcast rod.

Some of the good size stingrays were shown at the weighing station during the tournament.

Shimano South East Asia hopes to bring more of such events to anglers across Malaysia so that more people can be exposed to the sport of surfcasting.
