WELCOME TO SCREENPLAY After a packed year of cinema at Mareel, we felt that Screenplay would have to be extra special this year, and we think we’ve cracked it! There will be a celebration of Scottish film makers, digital meetings with Joshua Oppenheim (The Act of Killing) Toby Jones (Infamous), and David Morrissey (The Deal), visits from Wilma Smith (Behold Me Standing), Amy Hardie (The Edge of Dreaming), and Robert Rae (The Happy Lands), some lovely films for children, films exploring our mini-theme of ‘A Matter of Life & Death,’ a special Screenplay Film Quiz, some of Shetland’s own film makers’ work, and last, but certainly not least, Simon Thompson’s feature-length documentary, Reels on Wheels – the Hansel Story, a record of Shetland Arts’ Cultural Olympiad project from last year, A Hansel of Film – Shetland to Southampton and Back. Mark Kermode and Linda Ruth Williams have been curating Screenplay since it started in 2007. Mark and Linda love Shetland, and, inspired by their involvement in Screenplay, have set up a film festival in their own backyard in the New Forest. They also became ambassadors for Shetland Arts’ Cultural Olympiad project, A Hansel of Film – Shetland to Southampton and Back, and played an active and energetic part in promoting the project across the UK.

Interviews, dramatisation, fantasy, music and songs written and performed by local women are textured and woven together to form a montage of women’s lives as intricate and colourful as the knitting for which the islands are famous. Crofting, fishing and knitting are all part of their lives’ rich tapestry. The film presents and represents the enormous contributions of women to the work, heritage, culture and spirit of the islands. Come along and see how many folk you recognise! The film will be introduced by Shetland Museum Archivist Brian Smith.

She unwittingly falls in love with a young fisherman, but her heart and soul still belong underwater. Michael Groom has worked in film since he left University in 2003. He moved to Caithness for 3 years to focus on his screenwriting career, and very quickly knew he wanted to make a short film inspired by the place. THE SELKIE’S LOVER is the result.

Miners’ unions are leading the country against savage austerity cuts handed to the nation by a Liberal Conservative government. Aaron, a young misfit living in a remote Scottish fishing community, is the lone survivor of a strange fishing accident that claimed the lives of five men including his older brother. Shakespeare knew how to throw a party‌. Leonato, the governor of Messina, is visited by his friend Don Pedro who is returning from a victorious campaign against his rebellious brother Don John. Accompanying Don Pedro are two of his officers: Benedick and Claudio. While in Messina, Claudio falls for Leonato’s daughter Hero, while Benedick verbally spars with Beatrice, the governor’s niece. The budding love between Claudio and Hero prompts Don Pedro to arrange with Leonato for a marriage. Meanwhile, the villainous Don John plots against the happy couple... Two young, strong-willed Scottish sisters, one a left-wing activist, the other a born-to-shop fashionista, take their late father’s ashes to Cuba, the site of many intriguing family legends. Arriving in Havana, the two women promptly lose the ashes and go through a series of misadventures – both romantic and dangerous – to try to retrieve them, making some surprising discoveries along the way about the family ties that hold them together. Shetland Arts is grateful to producer Jonathan Rae for giving us permission to show Day of the Flowers. Sept 8 @ 20:00 - 22:00 Screen 1, Mareel Free In the summer of 2012, as part of the London 2012 Festival of the Olympic Games, a team from Shetland Arts went on a journey around the UK that celebrated the art of the short film. Supported by film critic Mark Kermode and film historian Linda Ruth Wiliams A Hansel of Film visited 22 venues ranging from marquees, livestock sales rings and community halls to cinemas old and new, showing a variety of films made by amateur and professional, and always including those made by Shetlanders. The film canisters were delivered from venue to venue by members of the public, using whatever forms of transport they could devise. Simon Thompson of Ronas Media documented the journey, and the result is an affectionate memoir of an extraordinary Olympic summer. Aside from interviews with Ray, shot over five years, there are also interviews and tributes from Vanessa Harryhausen, Peter Jackson, Nick Park, Terry Gilliam, John Landis, Guillermo Del Toro, Robert Zemeckis, James Cameron, Steven Spielberg and many more. Unprecedented access was provided to film all aspects of the collection including models, artwork and miniatures as well as Ray’s private study, where he designed most of his creations, and his workshop where he built them.

THE DEAL is a 2003 British television film starring David Morrissey as Gordon Brown and Michael Sheen as Tony Blair, and depicts the Blair-Brown deal—a pact that Blair and Brown made whereby Brown would not stand in the 1994 Labour leadership election, so that Blair could have a clear run at becoming leader of the party and Prime Minister.
