FriDay 30 auguST Shetland Arts presents Europa - a new play celebrating island culture & tracing the ancient story of Europa from the classical through to the modern.

Join Doctor Smith from the Zombie Institute for Theoretical Studies as he puts you at the heart of a hypothetical Zombieism epidemic, and teaches you what to do when a Zombie outbreak occurs.

Worst Case Scenario is a new spoof tutorial on the real science behind a disease outbreak, featuring a multi-media presentation and interactive demonstrations the outcome of the outbreak is down to you; with multiple endings depending on how you decide to deal with the Zombies.

The Reel Thing is an exploration of the age old relationship between Shetland’s historic dances and the fiddle music that was created for them – the very roots of our musical heritage. For decades in the 20th century the dances were virtually forgotten, before Shetland Folk Dance rescued them from oblivion. The fiddle tunes survived but were played only to listeners.

Recent collaboration with Shetland Fiddlers’ Society has recreated the fascinating symbiosis between dance and tunes, which enables their partnership to present an authentic performance of the “real thing” and an opportunity for the audience to participate. £6/£3 (concession price for under 16s only)

Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Paul Brady is one of Ireland’s most highly regarded and successful arists.

He crosses musical boundaries, incorporating folk, rock, blues, traditional Irish and classic pop styles into his song-writing.

The McCrary Sisters have long been the first-call soul voices for the likes of Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Patty Griffin, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash. They hit the spotlight in their own right in 2011 thanks to their hugely acclaimed debut album Our Journey. This years’ follow up All the Way is another triumph. There are few words to describe the power, passion and pure soulfulness of the sisters live.

Steve Riley and The Mamou Playboys have a world-wide reputation for excellence. After five very well received albums and live appearances all over the world, The Coal Porters continue to delight audiences with the intense power of fiddle, mandolin, banjo, acoustic guitar, doghouse bass and a wonderful four-part harmony vocal delivery.

They deliver a fresh, invigorated ‘take’ on traditional bluegrass that still maintains all the authentic elements of the original sound.

Wednesday 31 July Doors: 7.30pm, Start: 8pm mareel auditorium A boundary-pushing night of electronic music, film and live performance from the Scottish Ensemble and DJ Alex Smoke. Murnau’s 1926 expressionist fantasy, Faust, tells the classic cautionary tale of the deadly consequences of entering into self-destructive deals with the devil. Paying homage to the musical accompaniments of the silent film era, DJ Alex Smoke has created a 21st-century soundtrack for electronics and strings bringing this film to life.

Members of the public are invited to choose their partners and dance to favourites from a golden age performed by the talented players of the UK’s only professional string orchestra while enjoying delicious tea.

Saturday 3 august Doors: 7pm, Start: 7.30pm mareel auditorium The Scottish Ensemble’s first ever residency in Shetland culminates in a spectacular concert at Mareel. The Ensemble will team up with folk superduo Shetlander Chris Stout (fiddle) and Catriona McKay (Scottish harp), for a programme centring on two double concertos. The first, Seavaigers, describes a sea journey from Dundee to Shetland and is composed by Sally Beamish. And in Bach’s instantly recognisable Concerto for Two Violins, Chris and Catriona join the Scottish Ensemble in a fresh take on core string repertoire. £18

Fiddle Frenzy is Shetland Arts’ week long fiddle school and celebration of traditional Shetland musical culture.

This year’s festival is curated by sisters Jenna & Bethany Reid who grew up immersed in the Shetland fiddle tradition and are now both well recognised in the wider traditional music scene. Fiddle Frenzy is an opportunity to learn the secrets of Shetland fiddle playing from a range of experienced tutors, explore the thriving musical traditions of our unique and beautiful islands, or simply be part of our festival week which is packed with a range of Frenzy Fringe options and evening concerts.

Sunday 4 august Doors: 8pm, Start: 8.30pm mareel auditorium Fiddlers’ Bid are known internationally as leading exponents of Shetland’s rich fiddle tradition and are global ambassadors for the Isles. Since forming in 1991, they have established an identity as a unique band with a harmonious sound developed though many years of playing together. Their four-fiddle frontline showcases some of Shetland’s finest fiddlers - Chris Stout, Kevin Henderson, Andrew Gifford and Maurice Henderson, joined by a fantastic backing band featuring harpist Catriona McKay, guitarist Fionan De Barra, and bassist Jonathan Ritch, creating a display of stunning virtuosity at every concert. £18 / £15

Saturday 5 October Mareel Auditorium Rod Clements is best known from his work with Lindisfarne for whom he wrote some of their best known songs. A bassist and singer, he has also played and recorded with numerous artists and groups, as well as working as a solo artist.

Sunday 3 November Mareel Auditorium Aly Bain is Scotland’s supreme traditional style fiddler. His most recent collaboration with Swedish multi-instrumentalist Ale Möller, created the album Fully Rigged a celebration of shared Nordic heritage.

Completing the line-up is Bruce Molsky who has also explored traditional music from an astonishingly broad range of cultures over the past two decades.
