WELCOME TO MAREEL CINEMA You are now able to book tickets to see great films further in advance. We are trialling moving our cinema programming from 1 week to 2 weeks ahead. We may lose some ability to respond to customer demand on a weekly basis, e.g, introducing new films, or squeezing in more popular films at short notice. But the major plus side is that you’re able to plan your cinema trips and book tickets nice and early! Special Screenings for the upcoming month will also now go on sale in advance. This trial will run for the next three months and we welcome your feedback, good and bad, throughout this period. Thanks for your support! *Please be aware that, due to the flexible nature of cinema programming, some details may be subject to change.
CINEMA TICKETS Our prices vary depending on the day and time of the performance, and the type of screening. When booking you will be asked to choose between two different ticket types: adult or concession. Concessions include children aged up to 15 years old (those aged 16 and above must buy adult tickets), students (must produce valid ID), seniors (aged 60+), and people with disabilities. Tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded once purchased. Customers are responsible for checking that they have booked the correct tickets at time of purchase as mistakes cannot be rectified at a later date. Only in the event of a screening being cancelled will your ticket be refunded.

KISS THE WATER Showing from: Fri 31 Jan Tickets on sale: Now In a small cottage on the northern coast of Scotland, Megan Boyd twirled tiny bits of feather and fur, silver and gold into fishing flies that were at once works of art, magical - and absolutely lethal. Wherever men and women cast their lines for the mighty Atlantic salmon, her name is whispered in mythic reverence, and stories about her surface and swirl like fairy tales.

NEBRASKA Showing from: Fri 7 Feb Tickets on sale: Tues 28 Jan Woody believes he’s got one last shot at mattering: a notice that he’s the lucky winner of a million-dollar sweepstake. To claim his fortune, Woody insists he must quickly get to the sweepstakes company’s office in Nebraska - a 750-mile journey that seems unlikely given that he can barely shuffle down the road a few blocks, at least not without stopping for a drink. Worried for his father’s state of mind, it falls to Woody’s reluctant, baffled son David to accompany him on a trip that seems hilariously futile on the surface.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES Showing from: Fri 7 Feb Tickets on sale: Tues 28 Jan Jesse begins experiencing a number of disturbing and unexplainable things after the death of his neighbour. As he investigates, it isn’t long before Jesse finds he’s been marked for possession by a malevolent demonic entity, and it’s only a matter of time before he is completely under its control...
Rags to riches, riches to rags - these are the familiar trajectories of films about professional musicians. But in their brilliant 16th feature, the Coen brothers offer their own unique take on the genre. In Greenwich Village in 1961, the emerging folk scene has yet to produce a star, although it does not want for talent, notably singer-songwriter Llewyn Davis. But it’s hard to stay positive when your career is flailing, you’ve outstayed your welcome on all your friends’ couches, and you may have got your best mate’s girlfriend pregnant. The folk-scene setting offers rich opportunity for the directors to flex their passion for music, and regular collaborator T-Bone Burnett arranges a soundtrack of traditional and original compositions that gives O Brother, Where Art Thou? a run for its money.

But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

This deep family crisis draws the couple’s three daughters, including eldest Barbara (Julia Roberts), back to the family home, each returning with husbands and boyfriends in tow to solve the mystery of what happened to their father and to comfort the dysfunctional woman who raised them.
Tickets on sale: Wed 5 Feb Judi Dench and Steve Coogan play unlikely friends in the shocking true story of one woman’s search for a lost son. Falling pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena was sent to a convent as a “fallen woman.” When her baby was only a toddler, he was taken away by the nuns for adoption in America. Philomena spent the next fifty years searching for him without success. Then she met Martin Sixsmith, a world-weary political journalist who happened to be intrigued by her story. Together they set off to America on a journey that would not only reveal the extraordinary story of Philomena’s son, but also create an unexpectedly close bond between Philomena and Martin. A compelling narrative of human love and loss, showing that there is laughter even in the darkest places.

When Samantha starts showing odd behaviour, she and Zach initially write it off to nerves, but as the months pass, it becomes evident that the dark changes to her body and mind have a much more sinister origin.
MR PEABODY & SHERMAN (3D & 2D) Showing from: Fri 21 Feb Tickets on sale: Wed 12 Feb
ALL IS LOST Showing from: Fri 21 Feb Tickets on sale: Wed 12 Feb Academy Award winner Robert Redford stars in All Is Lost, an open-water thriller about one man’s battle for survival against the elements after his sailboat is destroyed at sea. Written and directed by Academy Award nominee J.C. Chandor, the film is a gripping, visceral and powerfully moving tribute to ingenuity and resilience.
Mr. Peabody & Sherman is an an all-new comedy adventure for the whole family. Emmy Award winner Ty Burrell voices Mr. Peabody, the world’s smartest person who happens to be a dog. When his “pet” boy Sherman, voiced by Max Charles, uses their time travelling WABAC machine without permission, events in history spiral out of control with disastrous and comical results. It’s up to this most unexpected of father-son teams to somehow put things back on track before the space-time continuum is irreparably destroyed.

LES INVISIBLES Showing from: Fri 28 Feb Tickets on sale: Wed 19 Feb Documentary. French language film with English subtitles. Eleven men and women born between the wars with nothing in common except their sexuality. Now in their 60s and 70s, they tell their personal stories, either shared or alone, revealing often pioneering lives through seven decades of experience. Director Sebastien Lifshitz offers us eleven personal portraits of gay and lesbian life from an older generation who often remain invisible and unheard in a youth-obsessed society. Winner of the Cesar Award for Best Documentary, and nominated for the BFI London Film Festival Grierson Award, it’s an affectionate but frank account that is in turn touching and amusing, offering an invaluable reminder of an overlooked area of our community at a time when we consider our own attitudes towards a growing elderly population.
Showing as part of Oscars Catch Up Week: 28 Feb – 6 March
CAPTAIN PHILLIPS Showing from: Fri 28 Feb Tickets on sale: Wed 19 Feb Shot almost entirely at sea, Captain Phillips is based on the true story of the MV Maersk Alabama, which in 2009 was hijacked by Somali pirates who took its captain hostage before making off in one of its lifeboats. Over four arduous days, the lifeboat was tracked by US navy warships, ultimately ending in a dramatic rescue attempt. Director Paul Greengrass delivers his trademark unflinching, nerveshredding style, while Tom Hanks gives a truly great performance as the greying, goateed captain, facing off against the pirates and struggling to retain his essential decency in the face of his ordeal.
THE INVISIBLE WOMAN Showing from: Fri 28 Feb Tickets on sale: Wed 19 Feb Nelly (Felicity Jones), a happily-married mother and schoolteacher, is haunted by her past. Her memories, provoked by remorse and guilt, take us back in time to follow the story of her relationship with Charles Dickens (Ralph Fiennes) with whom she discovered an exciting but fragile complicity. Dickens - famous, controlling and emotionally isolated within his success - falls for Nelly, who comes from a family of actors. The theatre is a vital arena for Dickens - a brilliant amateur actor more emotionally coherent on the page or on stage than in life. As Nelly becomes the focus of Dickens’ passion and his muse, for both of them secrecy is the price, and for Nelly a life of “invisibility.”
