The Shetland Islands are well known for their unique fiddle tradition which dates back hundreds of years, influenced by Scandanavian and Scottish styles. The tunes carry a distinctive rhythm with a repertoire of older melodies, as well as many more modern compositions by the likes of Shetland musicians Tom Anderson and Ronnie Cooper in the 1980s, to Ross Couper and Chris Stout more recently. With the Shetland community spread over 100 islands and almost 100 miles north to south, regional styles developed giving rise to association of some tunes with particular areas of Shetland. With the introduction of traditional fiddle lessons in Shetland’s schools in the early 1980s, primarily due to the determination of player, teacher and historian Dr Tom Anderson to preserve a fading tradition, the popularity of fiddle remains strong in Shetland today, with many young players continuing to emerge.

While the Shetland fiddle tradition was once only to be heard local houses, or community gatherings, in more recent times Shetland fiddle players have graced stages worldwide, working as professional musicians and generating new found interest in Shetland tunes. Such names include Aly Bain, Jenna Reid, Chris Stout and Catriona Macdonald.
Fiddle Frenzy offers the unique opportunity to learn the tunes and style of this unique tradition within the Shetland Islands themselves. Isolated far off the north east coast of Scotland, and as close to Norway, Shetland is famed also for Fair Isle knitting, ponies, puffins, geology, archeology, beautiful sandy beaches and landscapes, offering a rich experience of culture and history which we encourage our students to explore.
We offer three levels of fiddle tuition - Improver, Intermediate or Advanced, and ask when you buy your package that you choose the level that would best suit your ability, based on the descriptions here. You’re welcome to move class when the week starts, if you feel you need to. Workshops average 15 students and we usually cater for around 100 students in total across the week. You’ll be taught by a variety of tutors across the week, to expose you to different interpretations, styles and tunes within the tradition.
IMPROVER You should be able to play a few tunes without much hesitation and have had some experience learning by ear.
INTERMEDIATE You should feel at ease playing several tunes at a medium speed and feel quite comfortable learning by ear.
ADVANCED Ideally, you should be keen on learning by ear and very confident at playing more technical tunes and be able to play at a quick tempo.

GEMMA DONALD CATHY GELDARD Cathy grew up in Lerwick, playing with local groups High Strings and Shaela. On leaving school, she moved to Newcastle to study on the Folk & Traditional Music Degree course, followed by a Masters in Composition. Still based in Newcastle, Cathy teaches regularly and performs with a trio she founded there - NE3 Folk. She draws on many influences including Scott Skinner and French Canadian styles.
Described by fellow Shetland fiddler Aly Bain as, “one of the finest players in the country”, Gemma Donald is also one of the busiest… Since winning the coveted ‘Glenfiddich Fiddle Championship’ in 2006, she has gone on to establish herself at the forefront of fiddle playing. Most recently showcasing her ability as a finalist in this year’s BBC Young Musician of the Year. Noted for her ener getic playing style, her other roles include that of teacher, award-winning composer, session musician, pianist and adjudicator at national competitions. Her debut album “The Love o’ da Isles” was released on her own label ‘Shoebox Recordings’ and features a number of Gemma’s own award-winning tunes set to the virtuosic piano playing of Robert Black.
CLAIRE WHITE Claire is an awardwinning singer-songwriter and Shetland fiddler who has been touring internationally for over twenty years. A pupil of the late Dr Tom Anderson, she currently performs with fiddle and concertina duo Blyde Lasses and popular Aberdeen-based ceilidh bands Danse McCabre and Jingbang. By day, she works as a BBC Development Producer on all manner of creative projects, from music documentaries to Commonwealth Games short films.

JENNY KELDIE Jenna grew up in Burra, Shetland and was a pupil of the late Dr Tom Ande rson. She was one of the youngest winn ers of Shetland’s Young Fiddler of the Year at age 11. Now based in Orkney, where she works as a music teacher, Jenn y has also established youth fiddle grou ps, and performs both as a fiddler and sing er. She performs as a duo with fello w tutor Brian Cromarty, having released their , first album to great acclaim in 2014.

BRIAN CROMARTY Workshops in traditional guitar accompaniment are also available at Fiddle Frenzy. We run one class of mixed ability across the week. Students should be familiar with basic chords and at intermediate / advanced level of ability. ANNA MASSIE KRIS DREVER Kris Drever’s voice and guitar forms part of the backbone of today’s contemporar y roots scene. Widely admired as a solo artist, collaborator, and member of folk superstars Lau, he is a phenomenal and prolific artist. Originally from Orkney, now resident in Shetland, we are delighted to welcome Kris in his first year as tutor at Fiddle Frenzy.

AMY FISHER & ANA ARNETT Over the years, Fiddle Frenzy has grown a corner of Creative art classes, to cater for visiting family members who aren’t musicians but would like to get involved in workshops for the week, and also for musicians who’d like to get a break from the tunes and try something different. The workshops will be led again in 2015 by Amy Fisher and Ana Arnett, who will teach a variety of creative skills including drawing, painting, sculpture, book binding, felting, print making and weaving, with many opportunities to explore the beautiful Shetland landscape as inspiration.

Across Fiddle Frenzy week, we run a series of sight-seeing tours to enable students, and also visiting friends and family to explore our beautiful islands and learn about our history and culture. Tours run each day – afternoons only on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and full day tours on Tuesday and Friday. Places are free for students with tickets available to purchase for non-students at Shetland Box Office. Advance booking is recommend since space is limited. You can sign up on arrival too – just ask the Fiddle Frenzy volunteers to direct you to the sign-up sheet.
SANDNESS MONDAY 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM This trip will take us to the district of Sandness on the West Side of Shetland where we will visit the Huxter Water Mills, which date back to the Norse period, the beach and Jamieson’s Knitwear Factory. There will be trowie stories on the way.
WESTERWICK & BONHOGA WEDNESDAY 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM We will head way out west to Westerwick where we will enjoy some dramatic coastal cliff scenery, stopping off at Bonhoga Gallery at Weisdale Mill where we can enjoy the exhibition, shop and some delicious coffee and cake. We will be entertained all afternoon with Shetland folklore by one of our local story tellers.
ESHANESS & LUNNA THURSDAY 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM We will travel to Eshaness, Shetland’s volcano, where we will have an opportunity to explore some of Shetland’s most dramatic coastline and geology. We will also explore Lunna on the east side of Shetland, where Lunna House was used as the base for the ‘The Shetland Bus’, a Second World War British and Norwegian resistance operation.

This will be a trip around & DINNER the West Side of Shetland, PROVIDED visiting pre-historic sites, such as the Scord of Brousta, and a walk to the Culswick Broch – weather depending! We will also visit Michaelswood at Aith, and a few beaches along the way. The day will begin with a visit to the Scalloway Museum and Scalloway Castle, with a jaunt to the Viking Parliament site at Tingwall on the way out to the Far West. The West Side of Shetland has some spectacular scenery, as well as some amazing history which Tom Deyell and Davy Cooper will be delighted to share with you. A packed lunch, and an evening meal at the Aith Hall are included.

We will begin by travelling to Unst, where we will explore the Island’s Viking Heritage by visiting Viking Farmstead sites, and the Viking Longboat and Longhouse replicas at Haroldswick. We host a concert at every night of Fiddle Frenzy week, to showcase both local and visiting talent. Concerts on Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday nights will take place in Mareel, Shetland Arts’ run music venue, situated on Lerwick’s waterfront. On Monday night we will be at Lerwick’s historic Garrison Theatre. On Tuesday and Friday nights, evening concerts will take place within the community hall of the area of visit on those days - Aith on Tuesday, Cullivoe on Friday. The Aith concert will be followed by a session, and Cullivoe followed by a traditional dance.

TRIG BAG / EWEN & MARTHA THOMSON @ MAREEL 7.30pm (doors open 7pm) £18/16 The opening concert on Sunday 2 August will showcase the fantastic local talent of Bryan Gear & Violet Tulloch.. A student of the late, great Willie Hunter, Bryan has grown to embody much of the great man himself. Indeed, it is probably the greatest accolade that many prominent Shetland musicians now recognise him as Willie’s worth successor in the field of Shetland traditional fiddle music. Violet Tulloch has become internationally acclaimed for her truly individual style of piano accompaniment, having played with legendary names such as Tom Anderson and Aly Bain, having made a number of radio and TV appearances. The line up will also feature Trig Bag – a recently formed duo, made up of fiddler / singer Claire White and guitarist Robbie Leask, who play a selection of new and old Shetland tunes. Father and daughter guitar & fiddle duo Ewen & Martha Thomson, will also perform, with a selection of traditional tunes. Ewen, originally from Fair Isle, is a talented fiddle and guitar player. Martha is a previous winner of Traditional Shetland Young Fiddler competition.

The second of the Fiddle Frenzy concerts will take place in the Garrison Theatre, Lerwick. Headlining act Angus Lyon and Ruaridh Campbell, Campbell, are widely accepted as one of Scotland’s most creative fiddle and accordion / piano duos. Drawing on a wide variety of influences that include Argentinean tango master Astor Piazzolla, the European classical school and New York jazz as well as Scottish tune forms, this is music with genuine heart and soul. Shetland Fiddler Gemma Donald will also perform, with her vibrant, exciting fiddle talent, in true Shetland tradition. Becoming ‘Best Newcomer’ at the 2007 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards was a beginning of sorts for the Orcadian singer-songwriter, however, his journey was already far from its musical origins: growing up on Orkney brought its own inspirations, but somewhat inevitably, it was his father, Ivan Drever, of folk-rockers Wolfstone, who first sparked Kris’s imagination – just like Dad, he turned to the guitar to power his melodies, and found himself involved in jam sessions far and wide. Now living in Shetland, Kris will be joined by a collection of musical friends from the islands. Andrew Gifford & Grant Nicol will also perform. Andrew is a member of Shetland fiddle supergroup Fiddlers’ Bid, who have performed together for over 20 years and continue to play around the world. Andrew has performed solo at Fiddle Frenzy previously and is always a delight to listen to with a varied mix of traditional tunes, including some of this own compositions. He will be accompanied by guitarist Grant Nicol of Fullsceilidh Spelemanslagg and Haltadans.

Wednesday night will see a return of the ‘Shetland Sets’ night at Mareel, introduced at Fiddle Frenzy 2014 as a relaxed cabaret style event in the main auditorium. The night will feature a variety of Shetland traditional musicians, each performing a short 20-25 min set.

The duo from Orkney have delighted audiences at many of the world’s top folk festivals, touring to the US and throughout Europe. Their focus on Orkney music takes in traditional, contemporary and original material, boldly crossed with influences from America to East Europe, plus a highoctane whiff of heavy metal.

Corran Raa, a quartet made up of Kath Bruce (piano / vocal), Janet Lees (fiddle), Jenny Smith (fiddle) and Robbie Leask ( guitar / fiddle) play mostly their own compositions of tradition music, with influences from Scotland, Shetland, Ireland and Scandinavia. The name of the group refers to a spot on the island of Taransay where they all first sat in the same room to play tunes and drink whisky into the wee small hours, as musicians do. Jasmin Smith of Bigton, Shetland will also perform. She was award the prize of Shetland’s Traditional Young Fiddler of the Year 2015.

Friday evening’s concert will take place in the Cullivoe Hall in Yell, featuring Orkney based duo Jenny Keldie & Brian Cromarty. Cromarty Originally from Shetland, Jenny is a well known fiddler and singer, whose recent duo collaborations with Brian have received glowing reviews for their beautiful vocal harmonies. They released their first album ‘At First Light’ to great acclaim 2014.
The concert will also feature Iain Williamson, an outstanding Shetland fiddler originally from Burravoe, Yell. Also from Burravoe, a newly formed group of young musicians who call themselves Yell Sound, led by fiddler Mia Clark.
The concert will be followed by a dance with Shetland band Da Fustra, who won Dance Band of the Year at the Scottish Trad Music Awards in 2014, the same year they celebrated 45 years performing together.

All students participating in Fiddle Frenzy are given the opportunity to perform in the final concert of the week, playing two sets of tunes handpicked by curators Jenna & Bethany Reid. Birls Aloud, featuring Eunice Henderson and members of the Johnson family from Cunningsburgh, play a range of local and continental music, including from Norway and Russia.

Fiddle Frenzy is based in Shetland’s main town Lerwick. 2013 saw the move of Fiddle Frenzy to its new base in Mareel, Shetland’s new music & cinema venue. Classes take place within Mareel and also at neighbouring Shetland Museum & Archives. On Tuesday & Friday, we travel to areas outside Lerwick for classes and evening events will take place on those days (see schedule for more details).

VENUE OUT OF TOWN DAYS TOUR LOCATIONS
Whether attending as part of a group, family or as an individual, we’re keen to create an inclusive experience for all at Fiddle Frenzy. Through a variety of social options from concerts, to sight-seeing trips, to the Festival Club to tea & coffee breaks, we encourage everybody to get to know their fellow students during the week. We will have a team of volunteers on hand to help with any questions you have.
Each class is scheduled for a two hour slot, which includes a 30 min-ish break in the middle, to stop for complimentary refreshments and a chat with fellow students. Mareel’s Auditorium will form the hub of Fiddle Frenzy in 2015, with all classes meeting there for these breaks. On days out of Lerwick, we provide lunch and dinner within package prices and will cater for all dietary requirements.
Following the Lerwick concerts, we run a Festival Club at Mareel’s Cafe Bar, for students to either sit back and relax, or get involved in the energetic group sessions. Spaces will be provided for sessions at difference speeds, to enable players of all experience to join in. Please note that after 9pm, under 18s will only be permitted if accompanied by a responsible adult.

Across the week, an Information Point will be based at the lower foyer at Mareel, run by our very friendly team of Volunteers. We will also be sellings CDs, tune books and more. For students signed up for the full week visit us here between 12noon and 2pm on Sunday 2nd August to collect your FF pack.
