In the key of G, five Scottish Ensemble musicians take you from minor to major with two beautifully crafted quintets by two masters of the form.

COMING UP...

Written in G minor, a key long associated in Mozart’s work with agitation, anguish and desperation, it’s easy to see why this, and Mozart’s five other quintets, are considered so spectacular, and said to pave the way for the romantic model - the model which was perfected and, arguably, transcended by Brahms in his second quintet. In fact, it was intended as his last ever work- in his own words, he had said all he had to say as a composer.

Two evenings of music celebrating some of the best young Shetland musicians. The Gala concert is the finale of the Shetland Schools Music Festival and features highlights from the week including the Young Musicians of the Year.

The harmonic duo - half American/half Welsh - have been making waves in Americana circles since getting together to write and perform 18 months ago.

THE SONGS OF HANK WILLIAMS SATURDAY 26 MARCH SUNDAY 27 MARCH, 3.30pm Settin the Woods on Fire: The Music of Hank Williams, is a local tribute to the country music legend behind such classic songs as ‘You Win Again’, I can’t Help It If I’m Still in Love With You’, ‘Jambalaya’ and ‘Your Cheating Heart’.

The show features Dean Owens - Scotland’s acclaimed Americana artist, recently featured on BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris show, a musician already welll known in Shetland both in his own right and as a member of the ‘Felsons’ together with a host of top quality local artists including Sheila Henderson, Dodo Elphinestons - with possibly more names to be added. The show will feature many of Williams greatest songs (plus lesser know material too) together with an insight into the life of the man himself.

A show not only for the fans of one of country music’s greatest names, but indeed one for all lovers of country music in general.

BLUE ROSE CODE / LEWIS & LEIGH THURSDAY 14 APRIL, 7.30pm Mareel ď…… ÂŁ12 Immensely talented Scottish singer-songwriter Ross Wilson - aka Blue Rose Code - played some spellbinding (mostly solo) concerts in Shetland in the early part of 2015, and is coming back with a full five-piece band to play songs from his wonderful new album And Lo! The Bird Is On The Wing, songs for which he worked on in Culswick earlier this year. Lewis and Leigh - who also went down great at their gigs with Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra in September - are due to release their debut album in the first half of 2016.

The Witch (15) Sinister new horror film from debut director Robert Eggers.

New England, 1630: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life, homesteading on the edge of an impassible wilderness, with five children. When their newborn son mysteriously vanishes and their crops fail, the family begins to turn on one another. “The Witch” is a chilling portrait of a family unraveling within their own fears and anxieties, leaving them prey for an inescapable evil.

The Finest Hours (12A) In February of 1952, one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast struck New England, damaging an oil tanker off the coast of Cape Cod and literally ripping it in half. On a small lifeboat faced with frigid temperatures and 70-foot high waves, four members of the Coast Guard set out to rescue the more than 30 stranded sailors trapped aboard the rapidly-sinking vessel. Based on a true story, Chris Pine and Casey Affleck star in this thrilling and dramatic adaptation of what is considered to be the greatest small boat rescue in coastguard history.

Fiddle Frenzy, now in its 13th year, is a great opportunity for us all to celebrate our unique fiddle tradition.

Students travel from around the world to learn the tunes & techniques of the famed Shetland style, from our local fiddlers, and here in the islands themselves, where the landscapes and culture bear such a significance on the tradition. It is an opportunity too for local players to immerse themselves in an intense week of learning, with some tutors who may be new to them. Nightly concerts, traditional dances and tours also take place across the week.

Alvin & the Chipmunks: The Road Chip (U) The latest outing from everyone’s favourite squeaky singing rodents. Alvin, Simon and Theodore are still causing chaos for their long-suffering human companion, Dave. But now he’s got a new girlfriend: a lovely doctor named Samantha.

Alas, her teenage son Miles takes an instant dislike to our furry heroes. Fearing that Dave will propose to Samantha during a trip to Miami, Miles and the chipmunks team up for a crazy cross-country road trip to prevent this happening.

Zootropolis (PG) The makers of Frozen transport you to a delightful world populated entirely by animals. The city of Zootropolis is much like any other but with one big difference: all of the inhabitants are mammals, including gazelles, water buffalo, sloths and much more. Into this dazzling environment comes wide-eyed bunny Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) who has arrived from the country to enlist in the police force. Given her apparently docile nature, Judy is placed on menial duties - but she soon delves into the mysterious case of a missing otter. The Iron Giant: Signature Edition (U) In 1950s America, a giant robot arrives on Earth and befriends a young boy who tries to keep its presence secret from his mother and the government. Based on The Iron Man by Ted Hughes, and directed by Brad Bird (Ratatouille,The Incredibles), this modern classic is ripe for rediscovery, and this remastered version includes a couple of brand new scenes.

Knitting Group

Thursdays 25 Feb & 31 Mar, from 2pm

Alzheimer Scotland, in collaboration with Shetland Arts, have a monthly Knitting Group, usually on the last Thursday of the month. The group is aimed at all ages and includes people with dementia. This is an activitybased group and aims to assist individuals to regain lost knitting skills and acquire new ones. The Pogoes effortlessly serve up a set of Pogues classics mixing rock with folk with frontman Barry Mills taking on the persona of Shane MacGowan to deliver the legendary singers emotive words. In a 2 hour set the 7 piece band will take you through the best of The Pogues back catalogue with tunes such as If I Should Fall From Grace With God, Dirty Old Town and A Pair of Brown Eyes sure to have the crowd singing and dancing in equal measures.

Shetland Relay For Life Committee presents

As part of their fundraising efforts in advance of the 2016 CRUK Shetland Relay for Life, the committee are delighted to announce that they will be hosting “Shetland’s Got talent 2016”.

The winner will be decided by the audience, who vote for their favorite by putting money in marked charity buckets.

Comperes for the evening will be the irrepressible Jonny Polson and Bryan Peterson and filling those all important Judges seats will be Malcolm Younger, Jillian Isbister and Davie Gardner.

Entrants have been sought for this talent competition, which will see them compete for the top prize of £250, but more importantly, raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Expect a night of full entertainment & laughs!

The Assassin (12A) Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s astonishing and elegant martial arts movie is a must-see on the big screen. In ninth-century China, an exiled assassin (Shu Qi) must choose between love or duty when she receives orders to kill a man (Chang Chen) from her past.

Youth (15) Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel star as two elderly best friends, reflecting on their lives. Septuagenarian best friends Fred Ballinger (Michael Caine) and Mick Boyle (Harvey Keitel) are on vacation in the Swiss Alps. While Mick scrambles to finish the screenplay for what he imagines will be his last important film, Fred has no intention of resuming his musical career. rFed is flattered when the Queen’s emissary asks him to perform his popular piece “Simple Songs” at Prince Philip’s birthday concert, but turns the offer down. Mick, meanwhile, becomes disheartened when his regular collaborator, ageing diva Brenda Morel (Jane Fonda), turns the movie down. The two men reflect on their past, each finding that some of the most important experiences can come later in life.

Janis: Little Girl Blue (15) Oscar nominated Amy J. Berg (West of Memphis) presents a stunning, insightful portrait of the original “Rock Chick”Janis Joplin, a white girl with a ferocious, soulful voice who broke into the male dominated music scene but grappled with her inner demons and addictions.

Produced by Oscar winner Alex Gibney and narrated by Chan Marshall (musician Cat Power) the film features wonderful archival footage alongside Janis’s personal correspondence and contemporary interviews.
