CARMEN.maquia & CLUB HAVANA Ballet Hispanico will “whisk us away to contemporary dance’s hottest spot” (Washington Post) in this imaginative and theatrical showcase of Latininspired dancing at its best. In Club Havana, the intoxicating rhythms of the conga, rumba, mambo and cha cha are brought to life by choreographer Pedro Ruiz, himself a native of Cuba. The Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company Live cinema season continues with a new vision of Shakespeare’s heartbreaking tale of forbidden love. Branagh and his creative team present a modern passionate version of the classic tragedy. A longstanding feud between Verona’s Montague and Capulet families brings about devastating consequences for two young lovers caught in the conflict. Kenneth Branagh co-directs with Rob Ashford, reuniting with the stars of his celebrated film of Cinderella, Richard Madden and Lily James, as Romeo and Juliet. Newcomer Oakes Fegley is the boy with a magical friend in this remake of the 1977 Disney favourite. Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) has heard stories of a magical dragon for years, from the mouth of her wood-carver father (Robert Redford), However, that’s all she thought they were – stories. That is, until she meets ten-year-old Pete (Fegley) who claims to live alone in the woods with a giant green dragon named Elliott. Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from and the truth about this mysterious dragon. However, a few other people have found out about this remarkable dragon and are intent on capturing it.

Everyone’s favourite forgetful blue tang is back at last for ‘Finding Dory’, which sees her go off on a new adventure to search for the family she forgot about.

Waking up one morning, she sees a picture in her head – and comes to a shocking realisation. She remembered something! It seems impossible, but it’s true, and now she wants answers about her past. Who are her parents? Where did she come from? And how did she learn to speak Whale?

THE ALT-W:BLUSH TRAVELLING RESPONSE GALLERY Travelling Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition Alt-w: Blush Response, in partnership with New Media Scotland.

SATURDAY 27 AUGUST

As part of the Festival of Architecture 2016, New Media Scotland’s Alt-w Fund has commissioned a series of new works for Travelling Gallery by artists based in Scotland and working with digital media. The Alt-w fund supports and encourages artists to explore experimental and interactive practice, making use of technology as both a platform and a medium, recognising the continuous changing role that digital culture has in our society.

The Travelling Gallery is a custom-built, mobile, contemporary art space inside a big beautiful bus, which brings high quality contemporary art exhibitions and events to schools and communities throughout Scotland.

Its dual focus is to create highly engaging exhibitions and to provide a unique platform for arts education.

Curated with Travelling Gallery’s diverse audience in mind, the exhibitions display innovative artistic practices, representative of the international art scene.

For Alt-w: Blush Response, each newly commissioned work will have two relating elements; a smaller work to suit the unique Travelling Gallery space and a larger work to be installed at a specific location in Scotland. During its tour of Scotland, Travelling Gallery will visit the locations of each of the larger works, and due to their proximity, the two elements of the work will ‘blush’ in response to each other.

The Travelling Gallery will tour to Aith School, Baltasound School, Sandwick School and Whalsay School as part of the Start/Bonhoga Education Programme funded by Children & the Arts with the potential for public viewing at each venue (TBC). It will be open to the public in Mareel Car Park on Saturday 27th August

Award-winning composer and Lau’s visionary accordionist Martin Green brings together Portishead’s Adrian Utley, Mogwai’s Dominic Aitchison and Becky Unthank from The Unthanks, with BAFTA-winning animators whiterobot (Will Anderson and Ainslie Henderson) for this extraordinary live show. Flit is inspired by first-hand stories of human migration, some heart-warming, others heartbreaking and features songs and original music by Green with lyrics from Karine Polwart, Anaïs Mitchell, Sandy Wright and Aidan Moffat. It is a night that promises the very best of Shetland song writing talent, some well known and others who have only recently begun to perform in public. Singers already confirmed to perform are Sheila Henderson, Steven Robertson and Ian McCormack, with more to be announced over the coming months.

Hamish Henderson (1919-2002) was a colossal figure in Scottish culture, a man of boundless passion and curiosity whose poems continue to elevate and inspire a nation.

Robbie Fraser’s highly anticipated documentary pays tribute to the many contrary forces and diverse facets of Henderson’s life as a poet, soldier, intellectual, activist, songwriter and leading force in the revival of Scottish folk music.From an English orphanage and the draughty corridors of Cambridge to overseeing the capitulation of the Italian army in WWII and penning the most celebrated Scottish ballad in contemporary folk music “Freedom Come Aa’ Ye”, this is Henderson’s life as told by those who knew him best and loved him most. Former Pulp guitarist and Longpigs member Richard Hawley performs an intimate acoustic set with his guitarist Shez Sheridan. The Sheffieldborn musician has twice been nominated for a Mercury prize and once for a Brit Award.

During his solo career he has collaborated with Jarvis Cocker, Lisa Marie Presley, Arctic Monkeys & Paul Weller.

Richard will be in Shetland as part of Screenplay, where he will take part in a Q&A with director Kim Longinotto following a screening of Love Is All for which Richard provided the music.

Mareel  £18 / £15 One of Nashville’s most beloved and respected artists over the past two decades, Gretchen Peters, is coming to Shetland for the first time this summer. Performing in a duo format with her husband Barry Walsh, Peters will perform material drawn from throughout a songwriting career that began in the 1990s. The New York-born, Colorado-raised singer moved to Nashville in the late 1980s and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in October 2014 by singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell, who described her as “both a songwriter and a poet [who] sings as beautifully as she writes”. Her 2015 album ‘Blackbirds’ debuted at number one on the UK country chart and reached the top 40 UK pop chart, winning international album of the year and song of the year at the UK Americana Awards in February this year.

Support for her show at Mareel will come from Sheila Henderson.

Holmes and his band The Embers are touring their second album “Brighter Still”, released in June, while Sermanni will be joined by Orcadian pianist Jen Austin to perform material from “Tied to the Moon”, her second album which has been nominated for a SAY (Scottish Album of the Year) award.

Freshman Jake is about to start his first year at a Texas university - but before he can get started, he must navigate the hilarious, beer-soaked array of rituals and humiliating initiations. Moving into the house reserved for the baseball team, Jake falls in with the likes of the uber-competitive McReynolds, smooth-talking ladies man Finn and nice guy Dale. Amidst the blizzard of booze, sex and sports, it’s time for Jake to figure out who he really is.

Perry (Ewan McGregor) and his girlfriend Gail are on holiday in Morocco when they meet the wealthy and charismatic Dima. The couple soon find out that Dima is not quite what he seems and is in fact a long-time associate of the Russian mafia, who now want him dead.

Dima’s only hope is to convince Perry and Gail to broker him sanctuary with the British intelligence services.

Together, Dima, Perry and Gail brave a tortuous journey through Paris, the Swiss Alps and London…

But prying village eyes view their games with suspicion and the girls’ behaviour – and refusal to repent – quickly causes a scandal among the family. Soon the sisters find themselves locked in their bedrooms, with sober dress enforced and their schoolwork replaced by cookery classes. Their home now a prison, all the girls have to live for are arranged marriages and family honour. But together, driven by strength, courage and a desire for freedom, the five sisters fight back against the limits imposed on them and test their family ties to breaking point. To coincide with his exhibition Elemental at Bonhoga (30 July – 11 Sept), Peter Davis will be leading a workshop in experimental watercolour.

This is a great opportunity, aimed at those who already have experience of the medium, to learn new techniques and push boundaries.

To coincide with his exhibition Elemental at Bonhoga (30 July – 11 Sept), Peter Davis will be leading a watercolour workshop for bairns aged 8+. After a guided tour of his exhibition, Peter will introduce basic watercolour techniques and get everybody painting, either in the gallery or outside (weather dependent).

4 hour workshop, with a break for lunch (not provided).

Please bring your own materials/equipment for this workshop.

2 hour workshop, no experience required. All materials provided.

As this may take place outside please come equipped with suitable clothing.
