Showcasing contemporary applied art & craft from Shetland

Bonhoga  Free

Bonhoga is celebrating craft and its role in Shetland’s culture and economy with a programme of three showcase exhibitions in the main gallery, featuring some of Shetland’s most popular and talented practitioners. The first showcase begins on Sat 31st March and will run for seven weeks.

Each showcase will feature six local artists, designers and makers, and will include new work, current ranges and one off larger pieces. It is a unique opportunity for visitors to engage with craft, and discover what inspires our local designers and makers. It is also an opportunity to purchase from a large and diverse collection of high quality applied art and craft.

For the duration of each showcase we will feature one maker per week on our website and social media channels. This feature will complement the showcase and provide further details on the maker and their practice.

Amanda Welch is a London-based artist whose practice has moved from painting through to mixed-media installation and assemblage. She first visited Shetland in 2005, and the landscape has become the subject of much of her work since.

Amanda is preoccupied with maps and explores boundaries and place.

She will be resident at the lighthouse throughout May and sees this exhibition as a work in progress. During June, Glasgow-based artist Vicki Fleck will be in residence at the lighthouse and will create work in response to Amanda’s show.

Lankum are one of the most talked about bands to come out of Ireland in decades.

They’re a Dublin four-piece who combine distinctive four-part vocal harmonies with arrangements of uilleann pipes, concertina, accordion, fiddle and guitar. Their repertoire spans humorous Dublin music-hall ditties and street-songs, classic ballads from the Traveller tradition, traditional Irish and American dance tunes, and their own original material.

A belief in the high art of improvisation and intrigue with the infinite art and science of rhythm is what brings H, L and K together. They address ambitious improvisational frameworks which often resemble contemporary classical music more than jazz. Their music features dense, complex rhythms and textures, and virtuosic improvisation.

Fred MacAulay: 30 YEARS ON FRIDAY 15 JUNE, 8pm Mareel  £15 / £13 In 1998, Fred MacAulay made his stand up debut at Mayfest's "So you think you're funny" competition in Glasgow with five minutes of his own comedy material. Much of what Fred talked about that night was about his family, coupled with wry observations about society and politics - themes which Fred's fans will be familiar with. His observations have led him to success on television and radio, on the live circuit and comedy festivals worldwide.

You'll know Fred from QI, Have I Got News For You, and Mock The Week, from Radio 4's comedy programmes....not forgetting the legendary "McCoist and MacAulay".

CALL FOR ENTRIES SCREEN is calling for entries from Shetland film makers of any age, to show at our festival between 25 AUGUST - 2 SEPTEMBER This year we are inviting films of no longer than 4 minutes in length and in any genre. A shortlist of submissions will be drawn up and successful entrants will have their films shown during the festival. To be eligible you must be a Shetlander by birth or residency, including those currently in higher education.

GRAMMY-nominated Nashville songwriting hall of fame star Gretchen Peters will pay a second visit to the islands this summer for a trio show.

Joining her on stage at Mareel will be husband and pianist/accordionist Barry Walsh and bassist Conor McCreanor, as well as special guest Kim Richey, a two-times Grammy nominee in her own right who features in a collaboration on Peters’ new LP and will perform her own solo set.

The tour will be in support of her as yet untitled new album, which also sees Peters perform at venues including Edinburgh’s Queens Hall, Cadogan Hall in London and Birmingham Town Hall.

Two executives are dispatched by a Texas billionaire to a small Scottish fishing village, to negotiate buying the entire town so he can drill for oil in the North Sea. A four-piece traditional folk group from Dublin, Ireland, Lankum combine distinctive four-part vocal harmonies with arrangements of uilleann pipes, concertina, Russian accordion, fiddle and guitar.

Shetland’s annual film festival is curated by celebrated film historian Linda Ruth Williams and film critic Mark Kermode, alongside our own Kathy Hubbard. It features a feast of film screenings, lectures and panel discussions involving national and international film industry professionals and film academics.

The acclaimed husband-and-wife led band are fronted by singer-songwriters JT Nero and Allison Russell, who recently relocated to Nashville, and have been described by No Depression magazine as delivering “near perfect Americana” sounds. Drawing heavily on rock'n'roll and the gospel tradition, in 2016 Birds of Chicago released the Joe Henry-produced album Real Midnight and since forming in late 2012 have toured around 200 nights a year: “Singing for a room full of new people, hearts wide open, keeps off the cold and chases off the shadows.”

A blend of archive, reconstruction and insightful interviews with Vivienne’s fascinating network of collaborators guides us on her journey from a childhood in postwar Derbyshire to the runways of Paris and Milan.

SATURDAY 14 APRIL, 7:30pm | MAREEL  £15 Shetland’s Got Talent is an intrinsic, fund-raising element of Cancer Research UK’s ‘Relay for Life’ in Shetland.

This fast moving, fun-related, local talent show features a diverse range of local talent of all ages and descriptions, with a panel of local ‘celebrity’ judges providing experienced and constructive feedback to all the performers, before deciding who should go through to the final.

The audience then decide the overall winner by placing either £1 coins or notes into individual buckets to support the act of their choice – with the artist(s) attracting the greatest amount of money at the end of the night being declared the winner.

SHETLAND YOUNG FIDDLER OF THE YEAR 2018 Friday 27 April, 9.15am - 8pm  free Saturday 28 April, 9.15am - 4pm  free Saturday 28 April, 7.30pm  £10 / £6 Mareel The Shetland Young Fiddler of the Year brings together many of Shetland’s talented young fiddlers to showcase their music. Contemporary and traditional Shetland tunes are performed at the prize-winner’s concert before judges Iain Williamson, Linda Gair and Jennifer Wrigley. There are also performances from the Junior and Intermediate winners as well prize winning compositions from the tune competition played by judges Violet Tulloch, Debbie Scott and Bryan Gear. The night culminates with the announcement of the Young Fiddler of the Year 2018.

BambinO is a first operatic adventure for six to 18-month-olds and their carers.
