Ethereal Love features a delicate, airy periwinkle-blue Nigella flower. Also known as love-in-a-mist, the name is appropriate because of the misty, fragile leaves surrounding the blossom. A sweet card for sharing a loving message.

You can’t help feeling happy when you see these elegant yellow floribunda roses. This variety is named Walking on Sunshine, so the song is playing in my head as I write this—and don’t it feel good? That’s exactly how the recipient will feel when they receive this one.

This elegant cluster of orchid blossoms immediately caught my eye. The upper blossom showcases the orchid’s beautiful symmetry. The colors are rich, and the details are intricate. A LITTLE DAFFY

Set in a serene woodland scene, this delicate yellow daffodil is the star of this greeting card.  The flower has multiple rows of softly ruffled petals.  A sure sign of spring’s renewal, according to A.A. Milne, “She turned to the sunlight And shook her yellow head, And whispered to her neighbor:  “Winter is dead.”

According to Hans Christian Anderson, “In the language of flowers, tulips speak the happiest of words.” Indeed this happy little tulip was ready for its close-up and speaks joyfully.  The gradiated pink-magenta specimen is softly focused, but captured with textured and detailed petals against a soft pink background.  This card enables the receiver to enjoy the gift of Spring any time of the year.

Thinking of You Week might not be marked on everyone’s calendar, but it presents a terrific opportunity to remind the people in your life how much they mean to you. Whether it’s rekindling old friendships or nurturing current relationships, this special week encourages the expression of unspoken thoughts. This year, Thinking of You Week runs from September 16th – 22nd, 2024. I’ll share more about the history of the week at the end of this post.

In the spirit of connectivity and relationships, The Power Of Meaningful Compliments: Uplifting and Empowering Others offers eight ideas of compliments certain to uplift and empower others. These eight ideas were originally shared by The Just Girl Project, and I wanted to take a moment to share them because they are so very impactful. In a world where rapid digital messaging is the norm, the act of selecting a card and preparing a hand-written note stands out as a special gesture. Of course, you will want to provide specifics that personalize the message. For example, “You’re fun to be around. I had such a great time with you at the book fair last weekend.” Then, share a bit more about the great time you had. Or “You’re a good listener. Thanks for really listening to my concerns about being a better parent.” Then, share more about how you got a new idea or reassurance that was helpful. Sharing specific feelings and memories adds that personal touch, rekindling emotions and strengthening connections.

Maya Angelou had it right when she said “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

YOUR NEXT STEPS

Thinking of You Week is a golden opportunity for purposeful engagement. It’s a chance to communicate the often-unspoken thoughts that can make a difference in your life and the life of the recipient. A great approach to the week is to participate in the Thinking of You Week Challenge. It’s a simple formula: seven days, seven people, seven greeting cards.

1. Prepare a list of the seven people you want to celebrate and a quick note to self of what you want to write about for each.

2. Spend some time with your favorite local card retailer to stock up on a selection of seven individual greeting cards that are appropriate for each recipient. For example, Jenny loves roses. On the other hand, Barbara has been an inspiration while she was going through a difficult time. You might pick out a card featuring roses for Jenny and lotus blossoms for Barbara, as the lotus represents overcoming adversity. Below I’ve shown a couple of examples that could work for these recipients. Jenny would love the card with yellow roses titled ‘Walking on Sunshine’. The beautiful pink lotus titled ‘Lotus Mystique’ would be a great choice for Barbara,

3. Consider any additional items that will help prepare your messages. For example, do you need a new pen, have you moved and need a new return address stamp or labels?

4. Remember the postage. If you don’t have a supply of stamps on hand, be sure to pick some up in advance.

I suggest doing all of this no later than the first week of September so that you can begin to pop those greeting cards in the mail on September 16th. Now that you’re ready, you can relax and prepare to make someone’s day during Thinking of You Week!

ABOUT THINKING OF YOU WEEK

This year, Thinking of You Week runs from September 16th – 22nd, 2024.

Thinking of You Week is a weeklong observance that takes place each year in September, beginning on the third Monday; the celebration encourages people to send cards or letters to someone, just to let them know, “I’ve been thinking about you.” During this time, mail-senders and note-writers are encouraged to take some time to write and send (or give in person) a card or letter that’s personal and heartfelt.

Thinking of You Week first began in 2014 in the United Kingdom and was spearheaded by the UK’s Greeting Card Association. Thinking of You Week has continued to grow in popularity each year, with more and more people and organizations getting involved. The US Greeting Card Association brought “Thinking of You Week” to the United States in 2018. It’s now also celebrated in Australia and New Zealand. Here’s a pure white camellia captured at the peak of perfection. The center of the blossom is exquisite and lightly tinged with yellow.  The outer layer of petals creates a nice bed for that center to rest upon.

BLUSHING ROSE

While roses are lovely at all stages of life, the stage where the bud is soft and gradually unfolding is the absolute best!  The wide range of colors within this bud really enhance its beauty.

YELLOW IRIS

This stunning cluster of beardless iris blossoms caught my eye. The deep yellow fall petals were so pretty, they inspired me to create a textured background that they could just blend into seamlessly.

‘Dandelion’ is a card that brings back childhood memories for me.  I remember finding these and blowing on the seed heads, you probably do too.  I’ve applied a vignette to emphasize the feather-light seed head. This one’s great for sending a message about wistful, carefree memories.

‘Remembering Audie’  features a richly colored hybrid tea rose named for Audie Murphy, decorated WW II veteran and actor.  Captured this rose after a light rain,  the raindrops have literally weighted down this blossom.  The raindrops on the rose inspired me to enhance the background with a watercolor texture.

The cosmos flower is one of my favorite summer flowers. I love to capture it with a soft focus to create a dreamy appearance. This notecard is perfect for casual messages.

THE COSMOS AND THE BEE

Did you know the cosmos is a favorite of honey bees?  I frequently find these flowers in summer gardens, often with a bee or two nearby.  In fact, bees are regular photo-bombers when I am shooting, so I decided why not let them become part of the story?  This one is busy at work on a pink blossom surrounded by more of the same flowers in the background.

The lotus is probably my absolute favorite summer flower, and it is a frequent subject of mine. This white lotus rising from the water is reimagined in a painterly style. The color palette of this print is very soothing and peaceful, with just a pop of bright yellow from the stamens.

I had the joy of traveling to Victoria Island, B.C., in search of rare Himalayan blue poppies. This poppy was already losing its petals. The gesture or movement of those that remained reminded me of a sexy gown or perhaps a cape flying freely in the wind.

I must admit that I under appreciated mums until about a year ago. It was fall, and there wasn’t much else in the garden to shoot. As I spent more time with them and used a variety of lenses I grew to love them. I named this one Fireworks because I felt that the petals and colors were exploding in my viewfinder.

SAKURA

A sure sign that Spring is on the way is the appearance of cherry blossoms. In Japan, these blossoms are known as Sakura. I’ve immortalized these on a morning with blue skies and lots of surrounding blossoms to create a soft, colorful background.

One of my favorite techniques is closeup or macro photography. Here, I’ve featured a single daffodil in full bloom. The vibe is impressionistic, with soft brushwork and an ethereal quality. The background is muted and earthy in contrast with the bright yellow daffodil. TRANQUIL

Dive into the intricate details of this rich, buttery yellow ranunculus blossom. Also known as a Persian buttercup, it has multiple layers of petals tinged with orange, and the background is beautifully blurred. This beauty was captured at the height of spring for year-round enjoyment.

This rare Himalayan Blue Poppy or Meconopsis is in full bloom, captured in an artistic, painterly way. It’s a relative of poppies like the Icelandic and Oriental varieties. Shot from the rear, the blue petals radiate from the center in a soft, flowing manner. The background is a wash of muted greens, and the image overall has a dreamlike, ethereal quality.

With a vibrant range of colors, these beautiful plumeria blooms invite a Hawaiian or other tropical escapade. Captured up close, the details of the thick, waxy petals are clearly visible, while the background is soft and muted.

This scarlet-hued anemone is alive with movement and has a dreamy, ethereal quality. The petals are dynamic and overlapping, while there is just a glimpse of the indigo stamens. The image is painterly, and the background includes a range of hues from yellows to blues and purples.

TAKING FLIGHT

‘Taking Flight’ features one of my favorite summer flowers — the cosmos. This creamy blossom is captured in a patch of cream and hot pink cosmos flowers and appears to be ready to lift off at any moment.

‘Radiant Zinnia’ captures the feeling of a lazy summer afternoon. The vividly colored blossom’s bright yellow florets form a striking contrast to the deep red petals. The petals are more blurred as the eye moves outward from the center, creating a dreamlike quality. This card is perfect for sharing personal sentiments.

WINDSWEPT DAHLIA

This budding beauty appears to be blowing in the wind. The image has a soft, dreamlike quality and captures the essence of movement in the breeze. The hues are soothing greens, reds, and pinks. A casual card perfect for almost any occasion.

This pair of exotic slipper orchids seems to be engaged in some sort of conversation. One can only imagine their discussion, considering how the outstretched lateral petals seem to be gesturing for emphasis. While the intricate details of the orchids are clearly visible, the muted olive background is the perfect complement.

The Star of Bethlehem is a long-lasting cut flower that symbolizes innocence, purity, honesty, hope, and forgiveness. In contrast to this symbolism, it is toxic, so the grungy, painterly background felt right. The range of hues from the flowers meld perfectly with the background.

In Chinese culture, the magnolia tree symbolizes purity and nobility. Known for their endurance and strength, they symbolize everlasting connections, making them ideal for sharing a personal message with someone you care about. These magnolias were shot against a clear blue winter sky, which nicely complements the pink flowers and green foliage.

MAGNOLIA IN BLOOM

My note card collection includes several different magnolias. Shot in the studio, this one departs from the norm with a very painterly rendition. The bud is partially open, hinting at the beauty to come.

Did you know that Allium is the Latin word for garlic? The genus or family includes ornamental onions and garlic. This lovely white Allium was shot with a shallow depth of field or blurry background. The shallow depth of field also blurs the tiny flowers at the outer edge of the frame. It was further enhanced with a painterly texture.

This delicate anemone is off-white, and tinged with green.   If you’re not familiar with these beauties, The name “anemone” is derived from Greek which means “windflower.” The name comes from the fact that the delicate flowers are blown open by the wind, which in turn blows away the dead petals as well.

This flower is known as Dames or Sweet Rocket. I named these little lilac colored beauties Sweetness because they look oh so sweet. Indeed, they smell sweet at night, but have no scent during the day. This pretty little cluster makes for a sweet card to share sweet sentiments with someone special.

YELLOW ROSEBUD

Yellow roses are often given to loved ones as a way to bring joy and cheer. They also symbolize friendship. This beautiful single yellow rosebud against a softly textured green background is a beautiful way to communicate with anyone special. The design features a black stroke abound the image and a white border all around for a framed look.

‘Tender’ is a stylized tulip shown in profile. The petals are rendered in soft pink to red hues. They’re gently ruffled, hinting at their tender nature. The blossom is set against a warm, softly textured pink background, enhancing the dreamy, painterly quality.

This sweet pink dinner plate, Dahlia, was full of swirls and curls.  I love the curls but learned that when the flower judges evaluate a blossom, these curls are considered an imperfection.  I’ve complemented this wabi-sabi blossom with a beige and pink textured background.

ECHINACEA

‘Echinacea’ features another summer garden favorite.  While there is a high contrast between the flower and its background, there are plenty of details. The cone-head at the flower’s core seems to be aglow. Striking in its simplicity but with a moody, vintage look.

Why did I name this pinky-red rose Beloved? I just felt that this was such a beautiful rose with a combination of color, color variation, and those gorgeous petal edges on the left side that I felt it was a rose one would give to their beloved.

The white heavily ruffled standard or upright petals on this bearded iris caught my eye. They reminded me of the heavily ruffled white men’s dress shirts you might have found in mid19th century France. The edges are lightly tinged with indigo, while the falls or petals that are at the bottom are a rich indigo. The bright yellow beard provides a nice contrast.

Set against a graduated, mellow yellow background, this single calla lily’s grace is clear. The creamy white petals are delicately textured with a subtle translucency. The gentle curves transition to shades of green towards the spadix and stem. The blossom is softly focused, creating a dream-like presence.

SPRING BOUQUET

This lovely spring bouquet filled with freesias and ranunculus is ready for its close-up. A peachy ranunculus blossom takes center stage in this sumptuous floral arrangement. The buds and blooms are at various stages, adding to a sense of natural abundance and growth.

This still-life close-up features the lush peony in full bloom. Its petals range from soft to more vibrant pink hues, and its bright yellow stamens provide a strong contrast with the purple lilacs cascading from the vase. The arrangement is elegant and dramatic against the dark background.

This high key image features a branch full of diva magnolias. Magnolias are one of my favorite winter flowers to capture. The overcast skies and lighting enabled me to capture the translucency of some of the petals, as well as the detailed texture of the branches and buds.

Experience the captivating beauty of ‘Enchanted Iris,’ a stunning portrayal of a blue iris with intricate details and vibrant colors. This close-up view showcases the delicate veins, rich hues, and raindrops adorning the flower, creating a sense of life and elegance. Soft greens and blues allow the iris to stand out prominently.

This gorgeous dinner plate dahlia is of the variety Avignon. While its curvy center petals would disqualify it from competition, they add to the blossom’s untamed beauty. The speckled petals are arranged in an organic, disheveled manner, hence the name. Set against a black background in a traditional portrait style, this summer favorite is rich in detail.

I’ve been smitten by the rare Himalayan blue poppy since discovering them on a trip to British Columbia. Here, I’ve captured the essence of the poppy as seen from the rear since, in real life, they do seem to face every which way. It was a rainy day, and the soft, green, watercolor background seemed appropriate.

I’m almost a Los Angeles native, and the Lakers have been part of this area my entire life. It took a while for me to learn that the name came from their time in Minneapolis which explains why the name really makes no sense. Anyway, this lovely rose image captures the colors of our local team. Page 26

The humble cosmos is another one of my favorite summer flowers.  ‘Flutter On’ features a lavender cosmos flower, petals extended and fluttering in the breeze.  It’s also shot with a soft focus to create a dreamy, windblown look.  Another easy, breezy notecard perfect for a casual message.

‘Vintage Peony’ captures the classical elegance of this lush blossom.  Inspired by the old masters, the flower was shot against a dark background reminiscent of still-life paintings.  This card is perfect for notes where you want a sophisticated vibe.

The lotus is one of my favorite aquatic summer flowers.  I cropped in to just show a portion of this beauty.  I was intrigued by the colors, textures, and shapes of the petals.  The bloom is set against a simple soft green background.

Sheryl’s Virtual Garden began after a chance encounter in my Los Angeles neighborhood. It happened in late 2019. I

was out photographing flowers down the block from my home when a neighbor saw me and asked if she could see what I was shooting. After I showed her a few images on the back of my camera display, she said “you should turn these into greeting cards. There’s a market for nice cards with images like these.”

Although I was fairly new to photography then, the suggestion intrigued me, and shortly thereafter, Sheryl’s Virtual Garden was born. At the time, I was looking for a second career after a medical emergency forced an early retirement. Of course, then

we had COVID, which turned our world upside down.

Fast-forward to today. I’m an internationally recognized, award-winning nature photographer. I’ve developed a line of fine-art prints in addition to my note card collection.

Traditionally my cards have been sold through art festivals like the prestigious Laguna Art A-Fair and on my website. Now I’m taking the plunge into wholesale distribution to reach a broader audience. I would love to partner with you to bring my vision of these beautiful florals to your local market.
