Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art is pleased to present “Double Whammy!”, the latest exhibition by Patty Carroll. Expanding on her acclaimed photographic series Anonymous Women: Domestic Demise, Carroll’s latest photographs feature the trademark visual intensity of her studio-constructed interiors, once again showcasing her theatrical flair as domestic spaces threaten to engulf their anonymous female subjects. Under layers of fabric, wallpaper, and household trappings, the line between comfort and chaos blurs in a visual crescendo of wit and tension.
Drawing inspiration from politics, visual puns, and the objects she sources, Carroll builds life size installations that enact dramatic still life narratives. Each photograph is a staged drama: the woman is camouflaged by her environment - draped, hidden, almost swallowed - underscoring the absurdity of domestic perfectionism and the mental load borne by women.
Beyond their visual playfulness, these photographs are metaphors for modern domestic life. Each image suggests a quiet drama of demise as Carroll’s “woman of the house” is both empowered and undone by the very environment she created. With her trademark compositinal precision, Carroll invites viewers to question who is in control, and what exactly is doing the dominating. Living and working in Chicago, she continues to engage us with bold color, psychological depth, and a playful critique of home and excess.
Each photograph is available in editions of four sizes. Photographs in the 38” and 30” sizes are in editions of 10. The 22” and 15” sizes are in editions of 15.
