The elegant sculptures of Rain Harris allude to nature in the form of abundant and formal tableaus; refined, domesticated, shaped and cultivated into formalized landscapes and still lifes. They owe their heritage to the 17th century Baroque and Flemish Vanitas tradition and to Harris’s experience in Jingdezhen, China.
Set on islands of color, Harris’s meticulously hand-formed ceramic flowers are composed in lush arrangements with glossy resin dipped and coated silk flowers. This combination and contrast of matte and high gloss, precious and low materials, the organic and synthetic, creates a visual hybrid of opulence and elegance born of high and low heritage. At the heart of Harris’s sculpture is an investigation of the ideas of beauty, artificiality and preciousness.
Rain Harris received her BFA in Ceramics from Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA from Ohio State University, Columbus. Her work is included in national and international collections, including: NelsonAtkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO; Danmarks Keramikmuseum, Denmark; Icheon World Ceramic Center Museum, Korea; International Museum of Ceramics, Italy; and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, TX; among others.
