REDEFINING STRENGTH AND GRACE

WRITTEN BY:

SHERRI LEOPOLD

You are an unrepeatable miracle!

In a world often fixated on superficial standards of beauty, it's crucial to acknowledge and celebrate the profound beauty found in the strength, resilience, and grace of powerful women. Beyond physical appearance, the essence of a woman of worth emanates from her inner strength, her unwavering determination, and her ability to overcome obstacles with grace and resilience. True beauty has relatively very little to do with anything someone can see with their eyes.

Strength in Vulnerability

Malala's story is a testament to the power of vulnerability. Instead of allowing fear to silence her, she courageously spoke out against injustice, even at great personal risk. In doing so, she not only reclaimed her power but also became a beacon of hope and inspiration for millions of girls around the world. Can YOU imagine how she must have felt? How beautiful is it that she pushed through any fears she had forherself for the future of young ladies she doesn't even know. Most certainly someone who when she walks in a room all you can say is WOW!

Consider the example of Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani activist for female education who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban. Despite facing immense danger and adversity, Malala refused to be silenced, continuing to advocate for girls' education around the world. Her vulnerability in the face of danger only served to amplify her courage and resilience, inspiring millions to stand up for their rights and pursue their dreams

We are grateful...

A NEW DEFINITION OF SELF CARE

Self Care is an overused term these days. For too many women, it means hydration masks and wine parties and nail shellac and Netflix. It means hikes and solo journeys and SmartWool socks and long, luxurious baths with candles lit

But that’s what I call Surface Self Care. Sure, you ’ re taking care of yourself, but it’s pretty limited to physical comfort and cosmetic pampering It may be very sparkly and Instagram-worthy, but its only skin deep.

I’m talking about Deep Self Care, which involves protecting all the parts--most importantly your time, space, body, mind, pleasure and heart.

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 16 16 16 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

A NEW DEFINITION OF HYPE

A “hype girl” is often considered the modern cheerleader. But sometimes the hype girl seems too enthusiastic and over the top. She’s too smiley, too sunshiney and very prone to well, being over the top “rah rah”.

My definition of “hype-girl” is a little bit different. She’s cheering less for the Super Bowl champs and more for herself. She’s excited a little less about happy hour and more about alone time. And she’s not afraid to be firm with her boundaries!

Introducing the POM

A “POM” symbolizes half of a cheerleader’s pom pom. And P-O-M stands for Protection of Me. Our attention is our most valuable resource. Don’t be afraid to pause before answering a request for lunch, a favor or even a hike. Check in with your body, your mind and your spirit.

PROTECTION OF MY TIME

Example:

Recently, a networking event I’d signed up for a month ago ended up happening during one of my busiest weeks. I knew I couldn’t attend in full presence. And I wasn’t interested in wearing myself out. So I said “ no ” . I knew my limits! My boundaries can serve and support me!

POM Tip:

Notice what your body does when it rejects an idea. I scrunch my nose just a little--it’s hardly detectable. Like when my friend asks me, at the last minute, to attend an event with her. If I planned to take the night off originally, that’s when the nose scrunch happens--its my boundarycrossing detector! I’ve learned to listen to the scrunch! What’s sign does your body send you?

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 17 17 17 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

PROTECTION OF MY SPACE:

Our environment matters! Ask any feng shui expert. That includes temperature, comfort, clothing fit, light, sounds, pets and people in the house.

Example:

My husband used to get home early from work and turn on the TV to begin the evening wind down. But I was still working and I felt some FOMO! I requested that we designate a set time to come together as a family, and adjust as necessary. Presto! I keep my quiet space, reduce the FOMO and we all win.

POM Tip:

Notice how much you track the different members of your family and how much energy you ’ re giving away if they’re in the house

Husband looking for something? You may offer to find it. Daughter opening the fridge? You may offer to make her a snack. Sometimes alone time is required to break this habit. Does this resonate with you?

PROTECTION OF MY BODY:

It’s critical to tap into our body. Our mind likes to keep going and forge ahead, and sometimes our body struggles to keep up. But it still keeps the best score of our well being.

Example:

I used to schedule back-toback appointments. It always ended with me rushing around or holding my pee for an hour! My nervous system suffered and there was a lot less ease in my body. I also used to have trouble sleeping, so now I wear blue-light glasses at night while watching TV and lower the lights an hour before bedtime. I used to accidentally skip lunch. Now I set aside 60 minutes for lunch every day because I know I will be sorry if I don’t!

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 18 18 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

POM Tip:

When you ’ re feeling off, check in with your body Be still and look deep Are you tired, restless, hungry or thirsty? Sometimes we rush to have a snack when we actually need a glass of water or a nap. And sometimes I do a handstand in the front yard and feel better. What makes your body happy?

PROTECTION OF MY MIND.

As a Mom and wife, I’m a darn good multi-tasker, but I sometimes have too many balls in the air and it all falls apart. Set a boundary to keep your peace!

Example:

When I feel overwhelmed and get one more request, I used to slog onward like a martyr. That led to resentment and burnout. Now I try to respond with: “Sure, no problem, I just need 10 minutes.” or “Not tonight, but I’d love to help you on Saturday!” This communicates to your loved one: “I see you and I care about you, but I’m busy right now,, so let’s plan a time when I can be fully present.”

POM Tip:

Notice what your limit feels like. What happens in your mind when you have way too many things to do? Do you snap at people? Do you feel out of control? Do you shut down? It’s important to know your own threshold. What’s yours?

PROTECTION OF MY PLEASURE.

We all have pleasures we like to indulge in, but there’s no reason to feel guilty about them as long as you ’ re being safe.

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 19 19 19 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

Example:

I love to window shop, eat ice cream sandwiches and watch an episode of King of Queens before bed. I used to feel guilty about these things, but I’m trying to allow myself to indulge a bit. They bring me pleasure and they’re not excessive, so what’s the problem?

POM Tip:

Notice what brings you sheer pleasure. Maybe it’s sunsets or your feet on the grass. Maybe it’s peanut butter sandwiches or pink peonies or singing to Madonna or listening to your daughter play the piano. What’s your pleasure?

PROTECTION OF MY HEART:

This is the “big kahuna” of selfcare. We all have dreams, desires, visions and goals tucked away in our hearts but have we spent time with those ideas? Ignoring them eats away at our soul and our self-esteem. The result is regret and resentment.

Example:

I’ve been a “ yes ” girl most of my life, in motherhood, in my marriage, checking off the boxes as I was building my family’s nest in new home’s, planning vacations and killing it at the gym. I actually wanted to open a boutique fitness studio, design fitness activewear,

film workout videos and open a dance studio for kids. But those dreams got lost in the “doing” of life--I never gave them a voice or discussed them with my husband--it felt too selfish. So at 42, I resurrected and prioritized them. It’s never too late! I give you permission!

POM Tip:

Create a big picture vision for your life a year from now. Think about all areas of your life: relationships, home, career, family, friendships, fun, spirituality, home, money and finance. Name it and claim it. Your vision should inform your choices. That’s how you align your life with your dreams.

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 20 20 20 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

How to name it and claim it!

Anything that is not in alignment with what you say you want, is a " no " Staying true to yourself and following through by taking the appropriate actions will be nothing less than SOULSATISFYING!

WHAT'S YOUR BIG PICTURE VISION?

Go on Be half of a POM-POM

Protection of Me isn’t selfish, it’s just self-care at a deep level.

What if you could become passionate about guarding your own peace?

What if you could protect your time, environment, body, mind, pleasure and heart?

Emotional Healing

WHAT IT IS?

Emotional healing is connecting to, understanding, and addressing emotional wounds, trauma, or distress to promote mental and emotional wellbeing.

It is Self-awareness:

Emotional healing begins with recognizing and understanding your emotions. Connecting to unresolved issues that you may not have let go of. Including traumas, or negative patterns of thinking and behaviour. Self-awareness is crucial in identifying the source of emotional pain.

Why It Matters?

Holding emotions in your body can have both short-term and long-term effects on your physical and mental well-being.

Emotions and their impact on the body

When you do not effectively process emotions, your body feels it and expresses it through pain, sensation, and dis-ease.

Muscle Tension:

Emotions like stress, anger, and anxiety can lead to muscle tension

These emotions are held in the shoulders, neck, back and sometimes in the arms and legs. Muscle tension can cause discomfort and even lead to chronic pain over time. When holding emotions in your jaw can cause Temporal Mandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ). Through the clenching of your jaw, causing neck and shoulder pain.

Physical Symptoms:

Unresolved emotions can manifest as physical symptoms. Such as headaches, gastrointestinal issues, achiness, andfatigueandmanymore.

Doctors may attempt to find a diagnosis. Sometimes they call it Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or simply call it psychosomatic symptoms. This is where emotional distress is expressed throughphysicalailments.

CARDIOVASCULAR EFFECTS:

Have you heard of someone dying from a broken heart?

Chronic stress and negative emotions can contribute to high blood pressure, increased heart rate, and elevated risk of heart disease.

It’s a diagnosable condition, where someone dies from heart failure, or intense sadness, when someone close to them has passed away.

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 26 26 26 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

MENTAL HEALTH IMPACT:

Suppressing emotions can lead to psychological distress, including symptoms of depression, anxiety, and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) if the emotions are related to trauma. Such as war veterans, rape, and childhood abuse.

DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS:

Emotions like anxiety, guilt, stress, unspoken words (holding things in) can disrupt the digestive system. This can lead to issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s, Colitis, and indigestion.

SLEEP DISTURBANCES:

Emotional turmoil, over overthinking can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to insomnia or poor-quality sleep, which can exacerbate emotional issues.

RELATIONSHIP ISSUES:

Emotions that are unresolved can lead to difficulties in interpersonal relationships, they can affect your ability to empathize, communicate, and connect with yourself and others.

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 27 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

LONG-TERM HEALTH CONSEQUENCES:

Holding onto and suppressing emotions over a long period of time can contribute to the development of chronic illness. Including autoimmune diseases, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT:

PROCESSING EMOTIONS:

It is important to allow yourself to feel and express your emotions. It’s understanding and learning the language of feelings Or putting your feelings into words Suppressing or stuffing your emotions into the connective tissues, can lead to further distress and may cause physical pain.

UNDERSTANDING SELF-CARE: EMBRACING FORGIVENESS:

It is essential to take care of your physical and mental health to experience emotional healing.

Forgiving others and yourself, is a crucial part of emotional healing. Self-blame and holding onto grudges can perpetuate emotional pain Forgiveness does not mean condoning harmful actions. It is letting go of negative emotions associated with those actions.

DEVELOPING EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE:

Emotional healing can help you develop emotional resilience, allowing you to better cope with life’s challenges and stressors.

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 28 28 28 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

IMPROVED MENTAL HEALTH:

Emotional healing can contribute to improved mental health through addressing and reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders.

DEVELOPING EMOTIONAL RELEASE:

Emotional healing can help you develop greater emotional resilience and allow you to better cope with life’s challenges and stressors.

PAIN MANAGEMENT:

Emotional healing can help you manage chronic pain conditions by addressing the emotional components of physical suffering.

EMOTIONAL ENERGY HEALING:

Supports you through the process of becoming aware of how the energies of words, thoughts, actions, and triggers cause sensations in your body.

You will discover the feeling words related to emotions in your body that you have held onto for many years.

Recognises the strong connection between the mind and body. Emotional distress can manifest as physical symptoms, and vice versa It aims to promote a sense of balance and harmony in all aspects of a person ’ s life.

Emotional healing involves the release of stored emotions or traumas that may be causing emotional distress or physical pain. There are blocks that may be stopping you from understanding what your body is saying to you. These could be based in fear, fear of the unknown Also, judgement of your body being unhealthy Not recognizing that you can figure out the block(s) by learning the process of emotional healing.

It’s important to remember that emotional healing is a highly individualized process, and what works best for one person may not work for another. In addition, the severity and nature of emotional wounds can vary widely.

TIME AND PATIENCE:

Emotional healing is not a linear process, and it often takes time Remember to be patient with yourself and acknowledge that setbacks are a natural part of the journey.

UNDERSTANDING Ruptured Family Relationships

Families are very complicated and an important part of our lives.

These are the first relationships we have and where we learn how to exist with others. This places a great importance on working towards those relationships being healthy

This calls us up in life to be responsible and help our children learn, know, and understand how to be a healthy human. As well as how to be in healthy relationships with others

In this article I talk with mental health therapist Khara Crosswaite Brindle about relationships and when they are challenging, or we become estranged with a child. This is a tough subject but important to discuss for anyone in this situation that needs help. In my own life I faced a time that was challenging with one of my children and I know I am not the only parent to go through this. Raising children today presents many obstacles for parents and we can use all the advice we can get.

WHAT ARE SOME TOOLS THAT PARENTS CAN USE TO KEEP THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR CHILDREN HEALTHY?

Open communication, healthy attachment, and safety and security are all foundational for a healthy relationship between parents and children. Even when their child becomes an adult, parents putting energy into healthy communication, doing their own work, and building trust can support the relationship improving over time.

IF A CHILD HAS PULLED AWAY FROM THEIR PARENT OR FAMILY WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR THEM?

This is such a painful experience for both parent and child. If you are a parent experiencing estrangement, the best thing you can do is remain curious about your adult child’s decision. What do they need from you to speak to you again? What can

AS A THERAPIST CAN YOU TELL US WHAT KINDS OF EVENTS LEAD TO ESTRANGEMENT AND DIFFICULT RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PARENTS AND CHILDREN?

Estrangement is a difficult choice that comes from wanting things to change. An adult child will estrange from their parent when they determine the relationship to be harmful to their physical and mental health. Oftentimes, estrangement comes from trauma, abuse, and neglect that isn’t being actively worked on in the parent-child relationship, meaning adult children will make this choice when attempts to repair or heal the relationship with their parent fail.

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 33 33 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

you do to build trust? Can you do your own work to model healing and growth? Are you willing to initiate family therapy to support reconciliation with your adult child?

HOW DO DIFFICULT RELATIONSHIPS IN A FAMILY AFFECT THE OTHER SIBLINGS AND WHAT CAN YOU SAY TO CHILDREN IF THERE IS A FAMILY RUPTURE?

This question is so important! Estrangement absolutely has a ripple effect on other family members including siblings. Oftentimes siblings feel hurt, confused, and anxious about the fractured relationship within their family They may have strong desires to convince family to reconcile and feel motivated to change their own behavior or mediate the family members to make that happen. As you can imagine, this can lead to parentification of a young child which creates additional problems in the family system. Siblings of all ages can feel pressure to name their allegiance to one person or the other, which adds to their distress.

Parents will want to take the lead in explaining the estrangement to their children. They can start by grounding themselves and regulating their own emotions to support their children in having this conversation Taking a breath, checking in with their body language, and removing distractions can help a parent remain present with their child on this topic. Keeping their responses short and straightforward also helps parents, especially because children may have a simple question that doesn’t warrant a long response. Parents will want to remain mindful of age-appropriate responses, checking in with their child’s emotions, and encouraging additional questions as their child takes in the information shared

How can families support each other when times are challenging to create a

healthier home space?

I think a healthier home space comes from adult efforts to support safety and security for children in their care

Does a child have a healthy adult role model?

Are there opportunities for children to check in with their parents or caregivers, asking questions as they need to?

Does the home space feel safe?

From the perspective of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, individuals need safety and stability as their foundation before they can grow into their relationships and interests

How can parents support this need?

Can they lean on their community or resources to improve things at home?

DIGITAL GATEKEEPING PROTECTING OUR KIDS IN THE AGE OF SCREENS

W R I T T E N B Y : K O H I L A S I V A S
WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 40 40 40 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

In today's world, screens are an inescapable part of daily life, especially for our children. With kids spending as much as 6-9 hours per day on screen, it's critical to examine how this constant connectivity impacts their growth and development.

On the bright side, they introduce kids to a world of interactive learning through educational apps, improving skills like problem-solving and critical thinking. These platforms can boost auditory processing, visual skills, and even memory by engaging kids in a variety of brain-stimulating activities.

THE FLIP SIDE, HOWEVER, IS CAUSE FOR CONCERN.

DIGITAL DEVICES HAVE A MIXED BAG OF EFFECTS ON CHILDREN'S BRAINS.

THE ENDLESS NOTIFICATIONS AND IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATIONS FROM DIGITAL DEVICES ARE TRAINING YOUNG MINDS TO CRAVE CONSTANT STIMULATION.

This diminishes their ability to focus on tasks requiring sustained attention like reading a book or completing homework. The digital environment, with its rapid shifts and multitasking demands, is at odds with the focused, deep-thinking required in traditional learning settings

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 41 41 41 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

Kids are spending devices, often at t face interactions developing empa skills, and emotio result, teachers ar become frustrate of classroom lear for virtual interac struggle with team collaboration, wh school experience

The constant stimulation from screens can lead to difficulties in managing emotions, causing outbursts or aggressive behavior when devices are not available.

Another pressing concern is the exposure to inappropriate content. The internet, while a repository of knowledge, is also filled with material that is not ageappropriate, and often criminal We diligently protect our children from physical dangers, yet often leave them unguarded against the risks associated with the virtual world, a world that they can carry in their pockets to their rooms and bathrooms. This incongruity calls for a serious re-evaluation of how we monitor and regulate our children's digital interactions.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

THE KEY IS TO FIND A BALANCE.

Set clear boundaries on screen usage, especially for non-educational activities. Encourage breaks and ensure that digital engagement is varied and balanced with other aspects of life

Encourage outdoor play and physical activities. This not only reduces screen time but also supports overall health and development.

Not all screen time is bad. Select educational apps and games that promote learning and cognitive development. Set boundaries around passive screen time and encourage active, engaged use of technology.

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 42 42 42 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

Encourage hobbies, reading, and family activities that provide rich, real-world experiences and learning opportunities.

Guide children towards using digital tools for creation, not just consumption. Apps that support drawing, music composition, coding, or storytelling can turn screen time into an opportunity for creative expression.

Devices should be used where we can see them, not behind closed doors. Teach kids about what's okay and not okay to do and see online. Set up parental controls to help keep the bad stuff out of reach.

It's crucial that children arrive at school in a state that's conducive to learning. This means they need to be not just physically present but also mentally and emotionally prepared to engage with the material and their peers. With the rise of digital distractions, ensuring that children are ready to learn has become a multifaceted challenge.

Children should arrive at school with a clear, focused mind, free from the clutter of unfiltered digital content. They need to feel emotionally stable, without the agitation that can come from too much screen time or exposure to inappropriate content. Kids must be equipped with the social skills necessary to interact positively with teachers and classmates, which is often hindered by isolated screen interactions.

If possible, encourage your children to walk or bike to school. This can help them clear their minds and arrive at school more alert and ready to learn. If you ' re driving them, use it as an opportunity to talk instead of letting them retreat into their devices or headphones. The car ride to and from school can be a perfect time to connect with your kids

By taking proactive steps to manage children's digital habits and prepare them emotionally and socially, we can enhance their capacity to engage and learn effectively. This will not only improve their academic performance but also their overall well-being and success in the classroom and in life

The goal is to prepare our children for a future where they can navigate the digital world responsibly and successfully. It's all about teaching them to use tech safely and making sure we don't let the digital world sneak in through the back door.

WHAT IS A SYNDICATION AND WHY SHOULD YOU BE IN ONE?

In our current world, most of us are filled with financial uncertainty. Almost daily we are watching the U.S. Dollar dwindle, other countries go bankrupt, and stocks nose diving. How are we supposed to plan for our dream retirements in these conditions?

How about joining a syndication? Since most people have never heard of a syndication (your Financial Advisor is certainly not going to recommend it), let’s define what is a syndication and then we’ll jump into the benefits and risks.

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 48 48 48 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

By definition a syndication is the transfer of something for control or management by a group of individuals or organizations. In layman terms it’s the exchange of investment funds for ownership in real estate. It’s like a bunch of friends buying a large cake together and then getting to eat it at a party. Except instead of paying a cover at the door, the party host pays us and the longer we stay at the party, the more the host continues to pay us. Sounds fun, right? Trust me, it is!

Have you ever driven by a large apartment complex and wondered what it must be like to own something that large?

The millions of dollars one must have to take down a behemoth like that? What if I taught you how you can join hands with others to invest in these behemoth properties? That's what real estate syndication is all about! Think of it like a group effort to invest in something bigger than you could on your own.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:

A Syndicator will gather a bunch of smart folks (like you) who want to invest, and then everyone pools those resources to buy properties It's like the ' we ' re better together' approach. You don't need to be a real estate expert –all the nitty-gritty is handled by the asset manager and the property management company. You just watch your investment grow as the property does its thing You get to own the property without being the landlord!

Simple, right?

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 49 49 49 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

Let's talk about why real estate rocks as an investment even in today’s tornadic financial climate.

Imagine this:

Instead of letting your money sit around, it can be out there working for you. Your money should always be working harder than you! Real estate is like planting a money tree that grows over time It’s a consistent growth, unlike the stock market that is constantly up and down, and your payouts are certainly larger than any savings account, CD, or bond. Property values tend to increase, and even when the economy is rough, real estate will always bounce back So, if you ' re looking for a solid way to grow your money, real estate might just be your ticket.

Of course we can’t talk about the good without bringing up the bad four letter word-RISK. Every investment comes with some risk, but in real estate, a good syndication should be all about reducing those risks. This is where diversification is key! Join a syndication whose investments are spread across properties and locations. It's like not putting all your eggs in one basket.

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 50 50 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

Plus, a syndicator should be doing a forensic analysis on each property. Their underwriting should be extremely conservative, doing their best to mitigate any unexpected surprises that come up in construction or the economy.

So, if a syndication is so great, why won’t a Financial Advisor recommend one? Keep in mind that a Financial Advisor works on commission. Their foremost job is to keep the money in house. Anything invested outside of their recommendations is money out of their pockets. Be careful when talking to your Financial Advisor about a syndication that they don’t try to sell you a REIT. Being in a syndication allows you actual ownership in a property and the benefit of tax depreciation. A REIT is merely another stock you are buying into without any knowledge of the property, the management of the property, or any say in the property whatsoever.

You’re also paying taxes and commissions on everything earned without any of the write offs.

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 51 51 51 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

Now that you know all about syndications, how do you go about joining one?

As the saying goes,

“I WISH I KNEW THEN WHAT I KNOW NOW”

Allow me to take you on a journey of health and finance that will explain what that statement means to me.

In 2016 I was under a lot of stress. Dealing with life issues and having some unexplained health problems. Fast forward to May 17th 2016, after nearly passing out after taking my children to school, I went to see my primary care doctor, who referred me to a gastrointestinal doctor. After a couple of appointments and testing, I was told I had a growth in my intestines By June 9th, 2016 I was diagnosed with stage 3 Colon Cancer! A whirlwind of emotions to say the least!

On top of having to fight for my life, I was also concerned with how I was going to pay my bills! NOW I had a ton of medical bills, as I had to undergo 6 months of intense chemotherapy!

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 54 54 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

As I was navigating this time in my life, I was living off only 60% of my salary. I had good health insurance, and my employer allowed me to take a short term disability. BUT I was still responsible for paying my medical insurance premium even though I wasn’t receiving full time pay! It was mind boggling. I am thankful that God placed people in my life to help lessen that burden.

Ididn’t have any money saved up for a life event like this or anything else for that matter. What I didn’t know then is that I could have been covered with a term life insurance policy (yes, while still living).

What I know now is that had I been properly financially educated, I could have eliminated some unnecessary stress

by having a term insurance policy with living benefits and an emergency fund. Since then, I have not only received education, but I am also now a licensed financial coach. My number one goal is to help families not have to experience what I went through by educating them about simple finances

I mentioned that there is a term insurance policy that allows you to use part of face value due to chronic, critical, or terminal illness. This type of term life insurance policy is called a living benefits policy. This would have changed my life drastically while I was fighting colon cancer, as the coverage would have allowed me to use part

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 55 55 55 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

of the face value to take care of bills and any of my family needs.

Outside of having the right type of policy. I also urge my clients to start building an emergency fund. This type of fund can be used for any type of life emergency.

Of course, needs will be different for each person, but I recommend each client does the following:

Figure out how much money you need to save I typically recommend that my clients have 36 months saved in their emergency fund, but if you can afford to do more, go for it

Start small if you must Don’t feel pressured to use money you really need for day to day expenses Even saving a few dollars here and there is worthwhile.

Here’s a B word that none of us like to hear… BUDGET Write down all of your expenses and create a budget that will allow you to pay down debt should you have any.

Get a high yield savings account. A high yield savings account will offer an APR up to 4%-5% Choose your banks wisely!

I have found it super easy to save money by never seeing it! Have a separate account where money is automatically drafted. Out of sight, out of mind!

BALANCING ACTS

Navigating Caregiving, Mental Health, and Financial Stability

As a sole caregiver to my father following his stroke, I went through a challenging journey that not only tested my strength but also stressed the need for support His sudden illness, coupled with his disabilities, forced me into responsibilities I had no clue about and in addition to the financial strain of caregiving.

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 60 60 60 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

The toll of caregiving on mental health cannot be overlooked. The emotional and physical strain of caring for a loved one with serious health needs can lead to feelings of exhaustion, anxiety, and depression.

Caregivers often sacrifice their own wellbeing to ensure the comfort and safety of their loved ones, neglecting their own needs in the process.

In addition to the emotional toll, caregiving can also have significant financial implications. The costs associated with caring for a loved one with disabilities or chronic health conditions can quickly accumulate and place a financial strain on the caregiver.

One important role of financial planning for caregivers is securing adequate life insurance coverage for elderly parents

Life insurance serves as a safety net, providing financial protection in the event of unexpected circumstances such

as illness or death. Among the options available, final expense insurance can be a cost-effective solution to cover end-oflife expenses without burdening caregivers with expensive costs.

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 61 61 61 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

Final expense insurance offers a simple way for elderly parents to ensure that their final wishes are honored without placing a financial burden on their loved ones.

By paying a fixed premium, elderly parents can secure coverage that will help cover their final expenses, including funeral costs, medical bills, and outstanding debts Unlike traditional life insurance policies, final expense insurance typically requires minimal underwriting and allows for smaller coverage amounts tailored to the specific needs of the insured.

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 62 62 62 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

Furthermore, fostering financial literacy among caregivers and elderly parents is essential to ensure informed decisionmaking and proactive planning. By educating themselves about the importance of life insurance and exploring available options, families can safeguard their financial futures while navigating the complexities of caregiving with confidence and resilience.

HOW TO AVOID GETTING AMMED

days scammers are getting hold ne booking engines. So the wer is to use a travel advisor!

lets go over some things to look out for!

It wasn’t that long ago when people started to say getting travel via a travel agent was no longer needed because of online booking.

Well people are coming back to Travel agents in droves!

Why?

BECAUSE OF THE MANY SCAMS AND HACKERS ONLINE. SITES YOU USED TO TRUST TO PURCHASE YOUR TRAVEL ARE NOW BEING HACKED AND CLONED AND SCAMMERS ARE STEALING YOUR MONEY AND YOUR INFO!

It was just recently that I heard on the news of a family who lost over 25k after

booking what they thought was a dream vacation on an online booking engine that they had known about for years. Sad thing is that the site they had trusted was not what they thought. It had been cloned by hackers and their dream vacation and money went up in smoke!

When looking up travel online don;t fall for the too good to be true prices! If you can;t find those same prices on the suppliers direct website it is likely a scam. Oh you may still get the trip but your info has now been sold to hackers everywhere and your identity is now at risk. Often legit travel websites will offer a too good to be true price and in your excitement to book it right away so you don’t lose the deal you fail to notice on the final booking page that the price has changed and gone way up. Or payment is in a different currency which ends up being more when you get the final bill.

ONTARIO

I work out of the Province of Ontario where there are strict regulations and consumers are protected by TICO, The travel industry council of Ontario. Anyone selling travel in Ontario must be registered through TICO . You can check out what you are covered for when booking with a TICO registered agent or company by going to the TICO website.

Not all provinces or states have these protections for consumers so if you want to make sure you are protected you can book with a TICO registered agent no matter what state or province you live in. Check your local State or Provincial laws to see if there are laws regulating the selling of travel in your area.

Steer clear of Travel Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) travel companies! This article discusses them at length and is a good read if you are not sure if the company you are booking with is an MLM.

Travel MLMs: What You Need To Know [Infographic + More] (hostagencyreviews.com)

There are just too many red flags when you book with one of these companies. Their focus is not on selling travel and giving the best service to customers, their focus is to sell memberships and recruit. I don’t personally have an issue with MLM companies. There are some good ones out there but I don’t feel the same about Travel MLM’s.

Don't carry and flash large sums of cash, nor exchange money at sketchy looking places or with individuals on the street. I mean really use common sense! If you need to exchange currency, order it from your local bank well before you leave

Don't leave valuable items in public view; that includes your passport as much as your iPhone.

Don't look like a tourist by dressing like one or appear lost (even if you are) or consulting a map in public.

Don't walk with a bag slung loosely over one shoulder, and keep your bag on the opposite side of you from the road otherwise you could lose it to a thief on a bike etc.

Don't visit dangerous locations, or walk in unfamiliar, isolated or dimly lit areas, especially at night. To me this is an obvious tip. Really? Why would you put yourself in that kind of danger?

Don't drive an obvious rental car, the plainer the better, keep maps and travel brochures out of sight in the glove compartment.

Don't keep your vehicle and house or hotel keys on the same key ring.

Don't store cash, jewelry, medicine or other valuables in your luggage, and never leave your luggage unattended, even for a brief moment.

Don't become a tourist offender. Don't solicit prostitutes, buy illegal drugs, or attempt to smuggle goods out of the country. This should be common sense! Especially if you do this in countries that have very harsh laws regarding some of these offenses.

Don’t end up in prison on what is supposed to be a vacation!

Do be aware of your surroundings, and watch for suspicious people or vehicles

Do use cash substitutes such as traveler's checks or credit cards, and only carry as much money as you immediately need.

Do lock up valuables you are not taking with you in a safe in your room or use your hotel's safe-deposit box services to store them; and lock the windows and doors of your hotel room when going out

Do make a note of your passport number; if it becomes lost or stolen, knowing the number will speed up getting a replacement. I usually make copies and store them in a folder in my email. I also make paper copies and keep them separate from my wallet and passport It's also a good idea to do this with your credit and debit card info.

Do Keep a list of important numbers just in case you lose your phone. Lets face it, we don’t remember phone numbers any more.

Do put a band around your luggage as a safeguard against theft while in transit; suitcase locks are no barrier to a professional thief

Do travel with companions while sightseeing or shopping; there is safety in numbers. You can travel with an organized group, even if you are traveling solo.

Do be alert for staged distractions, such as someone bumping into you, spilling a drink on you, dropping something in front of you or causing a loud commotion; an accomplice can steal your valuables and walk away while you are momentarily distracted

Do be polite, respectful and thankful

Do some research about the places you are visiting and learn some key phrases in the language of that country English, although widely spoken, is not spoken everywhere.

And mostly be caring!

Do dress appropriately for your surroundings as much as you can; looking more like a local makes you less of a mark than looking like an obvious tourist And think about the culture you are visiting. If it is a very conservative country you will want to dress more conservative. Show respect for the culture you are immersed in.

TRAVEL ETIQUETTE.

Now let's discuss a bit about air travel etiquette.

I do have some personal pet peeves when traveling by air and the experience can be made awful by people only thinking of themselves.

First and foremost DO NOT recline your seat! The person behind you will literally only have a couple of inches to move and they will not be able to use their trays. If it is an overnight flight you can politely ask the person behind you if you can recline a bit. And if given permission only recline part way.

Avoid talking loudly or listening to movies or music without headphones. Make sure your kids have headphones for their electronics as well. And insist they use them even if they don;t want to.

Be polite to the flight attendants, they have a job to do. So let them do it. Listen to their instructions and follow the rules.

Be polite to the flight attendants, they have a job to do. So let them do it. Listen to their instructions and follow the rules.

This is literally what it is like when you recline your seat on a plane! So use your common sense and common courtesy which is something many people seem to be lacking these days.

Culinary Delights

CELEBRATING

THE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE US TO COOK

March is a time of renewal and celebration of a new season, spring! But it is also Women’s History Month and a great time to celebrate the remarkable contributions of female chefs and home

cooks who have left an indelible mark on the culinary world. These talented women have not only elevated the art of cooking but have also inspired countless aspiring chefs and home cooks like us!

WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 89 89 89 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1

One of the most well-known female chefs is Julia Child, who brought French cuisine to American homes through her popular cookbooks and television shows. Her charm, wit, and passion for cooking made her an iconic figure. Then there is Dominique Crenn, the first female chef in the US to receive three Michelin stars Her innovative approach to food has captivated diners worldwide.

With the expansion of networks and televised shows dedicated to exploring foods came a new generation of television chefs such as Carla Hall and Rachael Ray. Chef Carla Hall was a fashion model who turned chef after working in France She attended culinary school and has written numerous cookbooks, hosted television shows and served as a judge in multiple cooking contests. She is known for her passion and “cooking with love.” Rachael Ray popularized the concept of 30-minute meals and advocates for practical, accessible cooking. Her relatable style resonates with home cooks everywhere. Ina Garten, Giada De Laurentis, and Alexandra Guarnaschelli are also popular Food Network chefs and hosts, each leaving their signature mark in the world of cuisine.

These dynamic women have passionately expressed their creativity, innovation, and finesse in the kitchen. Aspiring chefs can draw inspiration from their achievements and unique culinary styles.

Some of these hurdles include Gender Bias and Discrimination Women in the food and beverage industry often face gender-based bias and discrimination in the workplace. This can result in limited opportunities for advancement. For instance, they might be questioned about their ability to handle tasks like cutting onions or using large knives, which their male counterparts might not experience. Historically, female chefs have Lacked mentorship and sponsorship opportunities. The mentor-mentee relationship is crucial in the culinary industry.

WHILE THEIR SUCCESSES AND ACCOLADES MAY PAINT A STORYBOOK TALE, FEMALE CHEFS HAVE ENCOUNTERED CHALLENGES IN THE CULINARY WORLD.
WW WW WW WARRIOR WARRIOR WARRIOR 91 91 91 VOL 02 ISSUE 1 MARCH 2024 VOL02 VOL02 VOL02 ISSUE1 ISSUE1 ISSUE1
UNFORTUNATELY, FEMALE CHEFS OFTEN HAVE FEWER MENTORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES COMPARED TO THEIR MALE COLLEAGUES. HAVING MENTORS AND SPONSORS CAN SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACT CAREER GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.

Balancing work with family responsibilities can be particularly challenging for female chefs. The demanding nature of kitchen work, long hours, and irregular schedules can make it difficult to maintain a healthy work-life balance. The physical demands of kitchen work can be tough for anyone. Tasks like lifting heavy pots, standing for long hours and hot working environments can take a toll on the body.

Although there are many famous female chefs, the culinary world is still male-dominated industry. Roughly 31% of chefs are women. This environment can sometimes perpetuate stereotypes and make it harder for women to break through and be recognized for their skills and talent.

Despite these challenges, many female chefs continue to persevere, driven by their passion for cooking and their desire to make their mark in the culinary field. As more women enter professional kitchens, we can hope for a more equitable and inclusive industry in the future

Whether you ’ re a chef, home cook, or a foodie, take time to honor these women trailblazers and many more unsung women who have brought love, joy and great food to the table.

Here are a few simple recipes that were inspired by the spring season and the women chefs and home cooks of our lives
