Honoring Leaders in the Profession

On Authentic Leadership at Sherman College Great leaders seek ways that they can add value to others, and the primary way they do it is by serving them. Being a servant is not about position or skill; it’s about attitude.

From time to time, you may see me share my thoughts about leadership on Facebook.

Being a true, authentic leader is extremely important to me, as is taking the opportunity to nurture and support other leaders.

It is my goal to keep authentic leadership as the cornerstone of my presidency here at Sherman College. Here’s what leadership has looked like over the past few months at the college.

Wassung, Hastings to Receive Honorary Chiropractic Degree Chiropractic advocates Keith Wassung and Miguel Hastings are being awarded the honorary Doctor of Chiropractic Humanities degree from Sherman College of Chiropractic, a rare honor given by the college to noteworthy individuals. The degrees will be presented during Sherman College’s 125th Commencement Ceremony on June 21.

Recipients of the Honorary Doctor of Chiropractic Humanities degree have influenced, initiated and/or carried out specific humanitarian/philanthropic activities that have significantly contributed to or influenced the chiropractic profession and/or humanity at-large.

Sherman President Edwin Cordero, D.C., reviewed Wassung’s and Hastings’ accomplishments and approved their recommendations this spring.

Wassung is a nationally known author and speaker in the field of health education and research. A former national, drug-free, weightlifting champion, he turned to chiropractic health care after being diagnosed with a near fatal health condition. His recovery led him to research, write and lecture about the scientific principles of chiropractic.

Hastings began his journey as a student at Life University in 1994.

His education was interrupted as he served in the Caribbean as an ambassador not only for the college but for the profession. He has been instrumental in recruiting students in the region thereby facilitating the spread of chiropractic in the Caribbean and also in assisting the various associations and governments in helping to establish chiropractic legislation.

Children and Chiropractic

Cohen Joins Administration as Executive Vice President Sherman College has welcomed Neil Cohen, D.C., to the administration as executive vice president. Cohen is a 1986 graduate of Life Chiropractic College and received the prestigious honor of Chiropractor of the Year in 2011.

“I am excited to join Dr. Cordero and the college faculty and staff as we share the mission and vision and help spread chiropractic throughout the world,” Cohen said of his new role at Sherman.

For 28 years, Dr. Cohen’s goal and the goal of his successful practice, Life First Chiropractic Center in Pompano Beach, FL, has been to encouraging patients to live the chiropractic lifestyle. While serving his community he took a special interest in teaching parents how to raise healthy, non-medicated families.

Cohen is a sought-after keynote speaker sharing the chiropractic philosophy across the United States. His commitment to others reaches beyond his calling as a principled chiropractor. He prides himself on his family: his wife, Randi, and three children, Brian, Sarah, and Michael.

Keep the Children Adjusted: Transform the Planet

by Peter Kevorkian, D.C. Chair of the Board of Trustees Parents bring children to chiropractors for a variety of reasons. Some discover the benefits of subluxation correction in solving a specific health issue or concern.

Some recognize chiropractic care as a means of optimizing spinal health.

Others realize the possibilities for the full expression of life that are created by a nerve system free of interference.

Whatever the reason, chiropractic care is a powerful benefit to well-being of that person. The younger the child begins chiropractic care, the more powerful the impact on their lives.

Research has shown that, rather than waiting to address a situation that develops over the course of a life, regular spinal checks benefit people as they grow and develop. Chiropractic care allows for optimal physiological adaptation, neurological function and biomechanical integrity.

The literature continues to grow with data that supports each of these functional benefits (I recommend both www.chiropracticpediatricresearch.net and icpa4kids. com/research/published_papers/index. htm for a plethora of research regarding the benefits of chiropractic care shortand long-term).

I believe there is a powerful transformative aspect here that cannot be ignored or denied. Bringing a child to a chiropractor on a regular basis creates a vitalistic context for that child’s life. It imprints a model of behavior that is an integral part of the transformation of our consciousness around health care.

The cultural model of engaging a doctor in one’s life has traditionally been for the treatment or prevention of disease or disorders. Parents would bring children to a doctor (medical or otherwise) in a sincere effort to “fix” a problem. Even the practice of “well baby care” or “wellness care” has focused either on early detection or “prevention” with vaccinations or other invasive technologies.

Now consider what happens when a family comes to a chiropractor for care on a regular basis (weekly, semi-weekly, or monthly). Never before in mainstream health care history has a family engaged a doctor’s services for the express purpose of enhancing life expression or simply improving health.

I am talking about establishing an entirely new model in the minds of children: (continued on page 7)

Campus News: Focus on Enrollment

Reach Out and Recruit (ROAR) Program Nearly Doubles in 2013

by ROAR Director Jillian Kersh, D.C. In 2013, the ROAR Program experienced incredible growth. All ROAR members possess the desire to foster and inspire the next generation of chiropractors, and that mentality will continue to grow and shape the chiropractic profession.

ROAR Members took the program to new heights in 2013, and here are some of the greatest achievements: 

30 ROAR members referred students and committed to mentoring them throughout their chiropractic journeys as they enrolled at Sherman College



Collectively, the program grew from 160 members to more than 300



ROAR volunteers worked diligently to represent Sherman College at 66 events in 18 states across the country.

Moving forward, and to better serve our members in 2014, ROAR Director Jillian Kersh, D.C., is launching a new group within ROAR called the Proud ROAR Individuals Dedicated to Education (PRIDE) Club. The PRIDE Club will be on a volunteer basis for our members who wish to donate their time and become an integral part of recruitment for Sherman College.

AMPED is designed to help chiropractic students and doctors to grow successful practices that are built on the principles of chiropractic. AMPED gives students the tools that they need in order to be prepared and efficient. The goal is for new chiropractors to be able to open up a practice after graduation and have the tools to serve their community at a high level.

One of the ultimate compliments current students can pay Sherman College is the referral of a friend. The college is thankful for the trust its students and alumni place in Sherman as the place for a top quality chiropractic education.

Sherman College student Katie Guida and her husband Cameron brought AMPED to the college when they saw how well these systems worked in AMPED offices around the country. They wanted to help students become empowered to open successful, service based chiropractic practices. AMPED student leaders at Sherman include Katie and Cameron Guida, Joshua Burnham and Katelin Edwards; the club is planning a Sherman LAUNCH event this summer.

Welcoming Future Students: Career Events Help Prospective Students Decide to Attend Sherman College

by Admission and Event Coordinator Caroline Batson Referrals from Sherman grads and supporters are the lifeblood of the college! We sincerely appreciate all who refer students to Sherman. Your referrals help Sherman College build the future of chiropractic education. The Admissions Office hosts many on-campus events throughout the year, and we would love for you to share these opportunities with patients in your office who are considering a career in chiropractic. Here’s a look at some of our favorite events.

Preview Day Preview Day is a Saturday event open to all prospective students. What makes this event so special? Convenience.

We know that many of our prospective students have jobs, are in school or are otherwise busy throughout the week.

Preview Day is available to help meet the needs of our busiest friends.

Prospective students will have the opportunity to personally meet with admissions and financial aid representatives, take a tour of campus led by one of Sherman’s elite student ambassadors, and get details on financing a chiropractic education, along with the inside scoop on local housing options.

Saturday Preview Days are available once a quarter. Dates for the remainder of 2014 include August 16 and November 1.

Showcase Sherman Weekend

Career Day, held in conjunction with Lyceum, is a jam-packed weekend for our prospective students, filled with chiropractic sessions, entertainment and interactions with current students and alumni. This two-day event is a great opportunity for future DCs2B to visit campus and really experience the spirit of Sherman on many different levels.

Coming this summer and fall, we welcome a new event called Showcase Sherman Weekend. Prospective students can visit campus July 11-12 or October 17-18 to get a jump start on the right path to a rewarding and meaningful career in chiropractic.

Some of the highlights of the weekend include a welcome session with President Edwin Cordero, D.C., palpation technique class, campus tour, apartment fair, student panel, sessions with successful practicing chiropractors, and fun special events, like this year’s Mock Kentucky Derby.

Lyceum Career Day is a great way for prospective students to network with current students and alumni. We strongly encourage alumni and Sherman supporters to refer potential students to explore Sherman College at Career Day.

While on campus, they will have the opportunity to interact not only with current Sherman students and faculty but also successful practicing chiropractors in the field. College Publications, Public Relations Honored Two prospective student print pieces and one news release campaign have been recognized with first place awards in the 2014 Media Women of South Carolina (MWSC) Communications Contest. The contest, sponsored by the state affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW), encourages and rewards excellence in communication. As first place award winners, these entries will be submitted to the national contest for judging later this year.

The college’s student profile piece won top honors in the nonprofit brochure category. The piece was created to appeal to the key types of students Sherman attracts, including traditional (right out of undergraduate study), career changer, connected (some connection to chiropractic, such as being a patient or having a family member in the field), or international. Feedback from the judge cited the print piece’s effectiveness in telling the story of the institution by “telling the story of its students… and you’ve done that in spades.” The judge also praised the use of large photos and personal profiles.

The other print piece to win first place honors is the college’s “Top 12 Reasons to Attend Sherman College” poster, which was entered in the advertising/ poster category of the contest and shows prospective students the many advantages of attending Sherman.

In addition to print pieces, the Public Relations office submitted a “Sherman Chiropractic Student Crowned Ms. United States” news release campaign that was given top honors in its category of information for the media. The judge had high praise, claiming “this campaign defines how to handle an outstanding PR opportunity that unexpectedly lands in your lap. You were able to score a major

hit because you made this exciting news easy for publications to incorporate into their print budgets.”

This is not the Public Relations Office’s first time receiving honors from MWSC. In 2013, two of the college’s prospective student print pieces were honored with first place in the state contest and received second-place national awards in the brochures and direct mail marketing categories.

Abstracts Due June 1 for the 11th Annual International Research and Philosophy Symposium October 18-19 Chiropractic is a profession based in vitalism and centered on vertebral subluxation.

Questions as to the philosophical and scientific nature of the subluxation take center stage at Sherman College of Chiropractic October 18-19, 2014, for the 11th annual International Research and Philosophy Symposium (IRAPS).

The conference will be held on Sherman’s campus in Spartanburg, SC. The theme this year is “The Future of Subluxation-Centered Chiropractic.” It is a pivotal time in the history of the chiropractic profession. Philosophy and research will play important roles in defining the profession for the future. The theme is designed to allow participants to orient their papers and their poster presentations towards the future. Where is subluxation-centered chiropractic going? What role will research play? How will the philosophy adapt?

How might we help to ensure that subluxation-centered chiropractic not only survives but thrives? The theme will set the tone for the conference, which will include a keynote speaker offering vision for chiropractic’s future in research and philosophy.

Abstracts for the 2014 symposium are currently being accepted. Abstracts should be limited to approximately 300 words and emailed to jhart@sherman.edu. Also submit a current CV showing educational and other scholarly accomplishments. This year’s symposium will include expert panelists who will discuss some of the most critical issues related to chiropractic today, as well as workshops to help you grow and broaden your skill sets in research and philosophy.

Sherman Names Faculty, Staff Members of the Year Associate Professor of Clinical Sciences Ron Castellucci, D.C., and Director of Admission Kristy Shepherd have been honored by Sherman College in appreciation of their contributions, time and commitment to the college.

Castellucci was named Faculty Member of the Year.

“Dr. Castellucci is always there for his students,” says Dean of Clinical Sciences Joe J. Donofrio, D.C., A.C.P. “His skill in teaching chiropractic technique and his ability to draw students in is exceptional. We are very lucky to have him on our faculty.”

Dr. Castellucci maintains a wellness-oriented family practice in Hendersonville, NC. He is a 1988 graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, MO, and is a member of the Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers. After 10 years of successful practice in Lexington, MA, Dr. Castellucci moved south to join the Sherman College faculty in 1998.

He teaches full spine techniques, spinal palpation and patient education.

Dr. Castellucci teaches pediatric adjusting techniques worldwide for the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. In addition to his passion for teaching, Dr. Castellucci enjoys an active, outdoor lifestyle in the heart of

the Blue Ridge Mountains with his wife, Doreen, and two children, Nicholas and Amy Lynn.

Shepherd, director of admission and international student advisor, was named Staff Member of the Year. “Kristy Shepherd is an integral member of the admissions team,” says Sherman College President Edwin Cordero, D.C. “She continually looks for and finds creative solutions to the challenges the Admissions department faces, but she is much more than an idea person. She also implements the solutions, taking care of numerous details, while providing exemplary customer service to our prospective and current students. She is a primary force behind our recent surge in enrollment.”

Shepherd joined the Sherman staff in 2008 as an admission counselor and was soon promoted to director of admission.

She serves as advisor to the college’s many international students. Shepherd earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Winthrop University in 1996 and is pursuing a master’s degree in organizational change and leadership at Columbia College in Columbia, SC. She completed the Leadership Spartanburg program in 2013. Kristy and her husband, Frank, live in Boiling Springs with their 7-year-old daughter, Grace.

Clinic Challenge Experience

CCX Eases Transition from Classroom to Clinic The Clinic Challenge Experience (CCX) was designed to help students make a successful transition from classroom to chiropractic internship by sharpening their professional focus, energizing their passion for chiropractic and exposing them to success principles for practice. The ropes course on Sherman’s campus consists of a variety of challenges — using ropes, pulleys, walls, platforms, poles — all of which present students with the opportunity to use problem-solving skills and teamwork. Facilitators and teammates encourage participants to face and overcome whatever fears are blocking their ability to accomplish the tasks.

Wendy Parker’s friends have dubbed her “the Mayor” because she’s involved in so many campus activities. Her previous career in marketing/sales might be a source of her “can-do” attitude, and she is excited about melding her passion for marketing with an ability to deliver great chiropractic care.

Eric Goans became interested in chiropractic when he was 16. But a few weeks into an internship with the chiropractor in his hometown, he experienced a football injury that left him fearing his athletic future would be severely limited. “I began care and started showing major improvements,” Eric says of the experience that impressed upon him the benefits of chiropractic.

A UNC-Chapel Hill graduate with a 10year career in telecommunications, Wendy expects this background to “pay tremendous dividends” in her practice. “I’m excited to make a difference in the community and craft a lasting legacy,” she says of her future.

“I soon learned that the profession was about changing lives,” Eric says. “When I figured this out, I made it my goal to share the benefits of chiropractic with the world.”

Wendy’s decision to make a career transition resulted from her own experiences with chiropractic. “More than the influence of any one person, I think chiropractic just resonated with my busy lifestyle from the very beginning,” she says.

Once Eric realized his passion for chiropractic, he went on to complete more than 500 hours of shadowing with D.C.s. After a visit to Sherman following his freshman year in undergrad, the aspiring chiropractor knew that the school was right for him.

Chiropractic is a rigorous program, but at Sherman she found the resources she needed and instructors that worked hard to help her.

She encourages others who are considering transitioning careers: “It’s doable, if you really want it. I’m living proof. I feel strongly that all life journeys have brought me to this point, and I am poised for success.”

Eric has also benefited from sharing his love of chiropractic with others, speaking to classes and participating in school career fairs. “It has been so rewarding to have such a life-changing impact on other students’ futures,” he says of the experiences he shares. “I tell my story and tell others that they can make their own stories.”

Collaborative Programs Promote Chiropractic, Enrich Education

Spartanburg Methodist College Transfer Agreement

Spartanburg Methodist College Athlete Care Contract

Virginia College Externship at the Chiropractic Health Center

Spartanburg Methodist and Sherman updated a transfer agreement to simplify student admission into the doctor of chiropractic program. Under the agreement, students can take their prerequisite 90 semester hours at Spartanburg Methodist, and then transfer into Sherman’s D.C. program after three years.

Sherman and Spartanburg Methodist College (SMC) formed an agreement to provide chiropractic care for SMC student athletes. The partnership contracts Sherman faculty and interns to work closely with SMC’s athletic training and medical staff and provide chiropractic care to SMC student athletes on their campus.

Aiming to help students in Virginia College’s medical assistant and medical office administration programs gain practical experience, Sherman College signed on as one of the Spartanburg branch’s exclusive externship partners.

SMC enrolls many students each year who indicate an interest in various careers in the health sciences, including chiropractic, according to SMC President Dr. Colleen Perry Keith.

At last count, Sherman had 70 active case files for its SMC clinic. This means interns have seen nearly 30 percent of the student-athlete population at SMC in just six months of active patient care.

“Compared to the profession’s national utilization rate of 10 to 12 percent annually, this is an impressive statistic, particularly since our practice there is completely based on referrals and word of mouth,” explains Dean of Clinics Adam Morrell, D.C., C.C.S.P. He expects continued growth in 2014.

“Having an agreement like this one in place with Sherman College makes it so that students can clearly see how they can reach their career goal in a timely fashion and go on to a career that plays a significant role in health promotion, as well as injury and disease prevention,” Keith says.

Under the agreement, Virginia College students can complete their required externship experience at Sherman’s Chiropractic Health Center, where their training will focus on customer service, patient scheduling, medical records and other administrative matters.

“We are excited to expose Virginia College students to a health care career that allows practitioners to bring wellness care to their communities while making a difference in the lives of others,” says Sherman College Dean of Clinics Adam Morrell, D.C., C.C.S.P.

Sherman College continually works to establish academic agreements and pre-chiropractic programs with institutions across the nation and around the world to promote its doctor of chiropractic program, enhance student learning and enrich faculty scholarship opportunities. During the past year, the college has signed several such agreements.

China’s Southeast University Cooperation Agreement

Sherman signed a Three-Plus-One agreement with Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico (PUCPR) to accelerate student admission into the doctor of chiropractic program at Sherman College and help PUCPR students earn both their bachelor’s and doctor of chiropractic degrees faster.

In a county-wide movement in pursuit of high academic achievement at every level, from cradle to career, Sherman College has partnered with the Spartanburg Academic Movement (SAM). This movement aims toward a significant general gain in educational attainment, particularly in the post-secondary realm, and toward a county-wide culture shift that places an ever higher value on education.

Sherman College and the Medical School of Southeast University (MSSEU) in China have signed a cooperation agreement establishing an academic exchange program that allows faculty members of each institution to visit one another, guest lecture and participate in collaborative research. Southeast University has been ranked among the top 20 research universities in China and among the top 500 in the world.

Pre-chiropractic students will complete their first three years toward a bachelor’s degree at PUCPR prior to admission to Sherman College. Then, upon successful completion of the first year at Sherman College, students will be awarded a bachelor’s degree from PUCPR. The entire process will take just 6.5 years.

“This agreement, unique in Latin America, will revolutionize the field of chiropractic in Puerto Rico,” says PUCPR President Dr. Jorge Iván Vélez-Arocho.

“Spartanburg’s vitality is heavily dependent on the abilities and education of its citizens,” said Sherman College President Edwin Cordero, D.C. “The work of the Spartanburg Academic Movement will make Spartanburg a better place to live, with a skilled work force and a highly competitive economy – and as an institution of higher education, that’s something we support wholeheartedly.”

“I’m confident this agreement will complement our strengths in the study of the science, philosophy and art of chiropractic,” Sherman College President Dr. Edwin Cordero says of the agreement. Dr. Fengshu Zhao was the first to participate in the faculty exchange program and completed a three-month stay at Sherman last year, working with basic science faculty in microbiology and parasitology, as well as lecturing and working with students.

From the moment he set foot on campus, and arguably before that moment, Sherman College’s fifth president, Edwin Cordero, D.C., took full responsibility for the monumental task ahead.

“I am responsible for guiding the direction of a chiropractic college I believe has profoundly influenced – and will continue to shape – the chiropractic profession,” he announced to the Sherman community. Just one year later, his leadership has pushed the college to new heights in many areas, improving its educational program, raising its profile in the profession and increasing its impact in the community and the world.

President’s Assemblies Introduced Cordero instituted the President’s Assembly program to bring top notch speakers to campus and keep students inspired during their day-today studies. Assemblies are held approximately twice each quarter. Past speakers include Cordero, Rene Acosta, D.C., Dean DePice, D.C., Ray Drury, D.C., Greta Schulz, Bradley Rauch, D.C., Keith Wassung, Julie Mayer Hunt, D.C., Brian Lieberman, D.C., and Rob Schiffman, D.C. Campus and Facilities Enhanced Campus improvements aimed at further growth and continuous improvement have been plentiful.

These changes have enhanced student learning, given the college more versatile spaces, expanded patient care options and will accommodate continued growth. The college refreshed the Atrium, expanded the computer lab, created tutoring space, upgraded Health Center equipment, created an adjusting area, improved classroom functions and completed several beautification projects in the Scallon Building, with more to come.

Access Health Partnership Helps Meet Community Healthcare Needs Cordero spearheaded an effort to secure the Sherman College Chiropractic Health Center as the first chiropractic partner of Access Health of Spartanburg. Access Health is a non-profit corporation serving the medically underserved population in Spartanburg County, and Sherman College’s Chiropractic Health Center provides quality and affordable chiropractic care to the local community through nearly 20,000 patient visits per year.

Access Health staff screens patients and sends them to the proper healthcare provider based on the patient’s presentation. The Chiropractic Health Center at Sherman College currently receives a set number of referral patients monthly from Access Health and delivers chiropractic care to this population.

Dean of Clinics Adam Morrell, D.C., C.C.S.P., says the program has been in effect since July of this year and is now going strong. “We have been getting excellent feedback from Access patients and staff as well as our own interns, faculty and staff,” he shares.

Access Health, in turn, reports compliments from its staff and the patients.

The organization recently collected several testimonials about patient care at the Chiropractic Health Center: 

“[My intern] is an angel. She graduates in December and is thinking about opening a practice here locally.

I hope she does, because she is good!”



“They are very professional. They treated me kind, and I didn’t feel any type of stigma because I was on an assistance type program.”



“They said my headaches weren’t really headaches, but that they were upper neck pain. I woke up every day with headache. Now I don’t wake up with them anymore.”

Serving the Hospice Community In addition to our partnerships providing chiropractic care to various community groups, Cordero is exploring several other community outreach options for the college. He is working with trustee Todd Picou, co-founder of Hospice Care of South Carolina (HCSC), on an arrangement for our interns to care for Hospice patients. “The college needs to make a larger community impact,” Cordero says. “We want to engage and serve our community in meaningful ways.”

Some of the most noticeable improvements to campus in 2013 include a beautifully decorated entrance to the Scallon Building, new adjusting tables for outpatient rooms in the Chiropractic Health Center, a colorful mural and new furniture in the café, and small, meaningful touches like an environmentally friendly rapid fill water station that dispenses filtered water and minimizes plastic bottle waste.

Sherman on Awake with Drake Last fall, listeners in Spartanburg and around the world got to know Sherman College and learned more about chiropractic and its vital and expanding role in health care today.

College faculty, staff and students served as weekly guests on the “Awake with Drake” show, which aired locally on 910 AM and 105.7 FM (out-of-towners listened online).

During these calls, listeners heard information about chiropractic and Sherman College; chiropractic health talks by interns and faculty; updates on current college initiatives; details about community service projects and events; the advantages of a career in chiropractic and more.

Radio personality Bill Drake is known in the community as the “Voice of Spartanburg,” but around Sherman College he’s known as a chiropractic advocate and friend who has volunteered his time to guest lecture to Sherman students in communications classes. Drake became a chiropractic patient in 1987 and is an avid reader of books on the philosophy of chiropractic. Sherman College named him Lay Person of the Year Award in 1991, and he has been named South Carolina Radio Personality of the Year in 1986, 1987 and 1992.

Hosting Talk the ’TIC Sherman College hosted the Talk the ’TIC national health talk competition for chiropractic students in November. Five student representatives from chiropractic colleges across the country shared their best health talks. Erik Van Slooten, D.C., founder of Talk the ’TIC, formed the competition as a way of bringing students together in friendly competition to answer the question, “How’s your health talk?”

Chiropractic schools around the world participate in Talk the ’TIC on an annual basis. The 2013 winner was Brady Salcido from Southern California University of Health Sciences.

Sherman Hosts Spartanburg Chamber Networking Event Sherman College proudly hosted the November 2013 Spartanburg Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours; this networking event allowed the college to introduce more of the Spartanburg and surrounding area to chiropractic health care and remind our neighbors about Sherman College and its positive impact in the community. The event featured great food, drinks, giveaways, networking, and spinal screenings by Sherman interns.

Clinic Challenge Experience

Annual Food Drive a Success It was a banner year for participation in the annual Thanksgiving food drive. The abundance of food that was donated this year was enough to fill two large tables causing them to bow under the weight.

“I am told that this is the best showing of the food drive in years,” says Dean of Clinics Adam Morrell, D.C. “Our patients and our Sherman community helped to make this food drive a great success!” The proceeds of the food were split between the college’s own food pantry and a local church organization to assist those in need during the holidays and beyond.

Business Institute to Help Students, Grads Succeed in Practice Aspiring to provide additional business training to recent graduations and to teach the finer points of business for growing a practice, Sherman College is partnering with Wofford College to form the Chiropractic Business Institute.

The program will be led by Wofford’s Scott Cochran, M.B.A., dean of The Space, a place for students to bridge the gap between academic theory and economic practice. The Space houses unique and effective programs for helping students successfully transition from college to life after college. Its programs include a startup incubator, a consulting group and a leadership development program. The Chiropractic Institute is one of its most recent partnerships.

Showing the Sherman Pride On October 28, Sherman College celebrated its third annual Sherman PRide Day. On this day, the college honors and celebrates its alumni and students and its community impact with positive PR and uplifting messages on campus, in the community, and via posts on social media.

This year the college held a surprise assembly, handed out “You Can’t Hide the Pride” t-shirts, played music, celebrated with mascot Larry the Lion, and learned a “Sherman Shuffle” line dance (to Katy Perry’s popular song, “Roar”) choreographed by student Chase Fowler (you can see a news clip at http://tinyurl.com/ ShermanShuffle).

Program topics will include personal strength development, branding, market positioning, negotiation strategies, operations and cash flow basics, planning for return on investment and building presence in the community.

Alumni and friends in the field were encouraged to participate by wearing Sherman apparel, sharing positive information about the college in a public forum, posting photos and messages on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), talking about Sherman to family, friends and chiropractic patients, and printing and displaying Sherman posters in their offices.

2013 Honor Roll of Donors

Your Gifts to Sherman Sherman College benefited from a year of progress and growth in 2013. New support for the college was very much in evidence as membership in the Board of Regent giving program more than doubled. The President’s Circle was established with new and long-time regents stepping up to a higher level of support, committing $10,000 per year to advance Sherman’s vision. Growth also came in the form of more students. Last year we saw enrollment increase by 40 percent over 2012.

With this increased support came campus and learning enhancements. We are establishing a business institute to teach our students practices for success, and enhancing student learning and networking opportunities by hosting guest speakers on campus. We also implemented outreach programs in the community through our Chiropractic Health Center to provide students with more opportunities to hone their skills.

We invested in a better telephone system, renovated the café kitchen, and added cabinets in the faculty/staff work room. We also attracted a local restaurant specializing in locally grown and organic products to provide better food service for students, employees and guests. $200,000 Estate Gift to Establish Endowed Scholarship Honoring Chiropractic Patient Chiropractic made such a positive impact on John Yglesias’ life that his chiropractor (and the executor of his will) Sherman Regent Robert Tarantino, D.C., has chosen Sherman College of Chiropractic as the recipient of a large portion of Yglesias’ estate.

A very generous gift of $200,000 will be used to establish an endowed scholarship in Yglesias’ name.

“Chiropractic was an integral part of Mr. Yglesias’ life,” Tarantino said in a letter to the college. “He came to our office for chiropractic care on a weekly basis for more than 43 years. Chiropractic adjustments were what Mr. Yglesias used in an effort to maintain his wellbeing throughout his life. I hope that your college will honor him… for his generous donation to the perpetuation of pure, unadulterated chiropractic education.”

Sherman College President Edwin Cordero, D.C., said it will be a privilege to fulfill Tarantino’s request for Yglesias. “We are honored by the trust Mr. Yglesias and Dr. Tarantino have placed in Sherman College and we pledge to respect Mr. Yglesias’ memory and our mutual love of chiropractic with this endowed scholarship,” Cordero said. “We are proud to instill in our students a deep appreciation for the principles and philosophy of chiropractic.”

Yglesias was born on August 4, 1927, in New York City and died on March 26, 2013, in Lyndhurst, NJ. His family came from the Provence of Galicia in Spain; he never married nor did he have any children. He was a self-employed contractor in New York City before he retired, and he was well read and an astute financial investor. Yglesias was an avid naturalist and besides exercise and nutrition to maintain his health, he received chiropractic care at Tarantino’s office for the last 43 years of his life.

Yglesias recognized the importance of regular chiropractic care and vertebral subluxation correction and never missed a week in the office, Tarantino said of his patient and friend. “Both Evelyn and I were like family to him,” he said.

“His last words to me were, ‘I owe you my life.’ Many times we do not realize how important we are to those we care for until something like this occurs. Because of his love for chiropractic and because I was instructed as executor of his will to make decisions on charities, I felt Mr. Yglesias would approve if I chose to give a large portion of his residual estate to Sherman College of Chiropractic.”

The Scholarship Committee at Sherman College will work to establish the criteria for Yglesias’ endowed scholarship. As an endowed fund, the principal will remain invested while earnings can be used to award scholarships to students at Sherman.

Kaku Donates Translated B.J. Palmer Books Sherman College supporter Dr. Fumio Kaku of Tokyo, founder and president of the Japan Specific Chiropractic School and the Japan Specific Chiropractic Association, has donated two translated B.J. Palmer Green Books to the Sherman College library. Kaku, who has translated four of the Green Books, has gifted the college with As a Man Thinketh Vol.28 and Our Masterpiece Vol.39. He has also translated (and previously donated to the college) Chiropractic Philosophy Science and Art Vol.32 and History in the Making Vol.35. Kaku hopes the books help Sherman students from Japan studying to become doctors of chiropractic.

Dr. Kaku established the Japan Specific Chiropractic School (JSCS) in 1987, teaching H.I.O. technique and the philosophy, science and art of chiropractic. The school has graduated 65 students. Some graduates go share specific chiropractic with the public as members of the Japan Specific Chiropractic Association (JSCA), a small but strong organization because of its dedication to the philosophy, science and art of chiropractic.

JSCA members are well trained upper cervical chiropractic specialists, Kaku says.

Kaku studied the basic sciences at Nihon Shiatsu (Acupressure) College, graduating in 1980. He studied chiropractic at the Shiokawa School of Chiropractic in Tokyo, graduating in 1981. He has trained for more than 30 years in upper cervical chiropractic, under notables like Drs. Stephen A. Duff Sr., E. L. Crowder, and Thomas A. Gelardi.

First C.G. Haynes Scholarship Awarded Luke Schemelzle, a second quarter student from Asheville, NC, was awarded the C.G. Haynes Scholarship for winter quarter 2014.

This scholarship seeks to award students pursuing chiropractic studies at Sherman College, giving preference to students from Washington State or students who are entering the chiropractic profession as a second career. Schemelze comes to chiropractic from education, where he worked as a high school principal.

The scholarship is named for Charles G. Haynes, D.C., of Everett, WA, a supporter of Sherman College in its early years until his death in 1985.

He was a career changer who became a chiropractor after a successful career in the timber business. The fund was established with a generous bequest from the estate of Lennith L. Groves, a patient of Dr. Haynes.
